AmigoWinter 2014 Dear Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club Members: “Happy New Years 2014!!” I am hoping this letter finds all of our members excited and ready to show off our beautiful Peruvian Horses in this New Year. We ended 2013 with a wonderful festive gathering of members at our new home in Simi Valley with fun and good cheer. Even though the weather was dreary, many people made the long drive from San Diego, Fallbrook, Norco, Hemet, Hesperia, and many more places to attend our annual Meeting and election. We appreciate all of the time and commitment you have all made to helping us promote our Beautiful Breed. Our Board is excited to announce that we will be holding our Annual show at Santa Barbara, Earl Warren Showgrounds this October 18-19. With the Honorable judge Marco Dapelo. We have looked into what our members are saying and asking and we believe it would be best to have a 2 day show this year. It will still be exciting as ever and the weather is always beautiful that time of year, plus the hotel expense will be a lot more reasonable. We are working on plans to have some fun events this year and can’t wait to share them all with you. Our website is being updated to keep all of our members up to date on all the happenings this coming year, and also this fabulous newsletter that Debbie Pye gives us 4 times a year. Our Board would like to welcome our new Secretary, Jeanne Mattiusi. She has been in the breed for many years and we are all happy to work with Jeanne and welcome her to our Los Amigos Family. I am looking forward to a great 2014 and working with all of you to make this really the “ Year of the Peruvian Horse”! Is it “Pilotoʼs Shadow Ranch” or“Wild Turkey Ranch”?Danell Adams

My Christmas present to myself...a first...was thepurchase of WF Patrimonio from Westview

Farm and Gene Pepe. I amvery excited and honored tohave this wonderful stallion onmy Fallbrook Ranchita. Hisconditioning program has be-gun and I am so happy with bothhis performance and his incredibletemperament. He will make hisfirst west coast show appearanceat the Carousel show in Scottsdalethis March. HOWEVER, it wouldseem that another unexpected ad-dition to my place has truly stolenthe lime light! Two wild bronze

turkeys appeared at my gate the day after Thanksgiving...and are still here! They have become rather popular with family and friends who have now refer-enced their antics as “Turkeynanigans”! I must say, I now know more aboutturkeys then I probably know about stallions! Both are providing unique learn-ing curves...and some entertainment. While these big birds can certainly fly,and actually sleep in the pepper trees at night, they never wander too far...and are always very timely in letting meknow when they are hungry! Well, so is the stallion but so far, he is sleeping in the barn!We shall see what the New Year brings, but so far it has been rather unique, educational and fun!

Took this picture today of Laura and Joe Castro. Theywere the winners of "Lessons with Jorge Valenzuela"from the silent auction at the NAPHA U.S. Nationals. This was their first experience on gaited horses.Naturally, they had a great time.

From Debbie Abrams ~~Here’s one to check off my Bucket List! OnWednesday, October 23rd, I overheard Bev, thetrainer at the ranch where I stable my horse Connie(Confianza de Mayo), talking about riding her Ara-bian horse in the Arabian Native Costume class atthe Grand National Rodeo at the Cow Palace. Ofcourse, I commented to Bev that was cool, and Iwish I could do something like that. So, after myride on Connie, Bev came over to me and asked if Iwanted to ride Connie in a side saddle class at theCow Palace. Well, without a second thought I ofcourse said yes.On October 26th, Bev and her horse Oledio, whichis an endurance Tevis Cup horse, my husband Tom,Connie, and I trailered our 2 horses over to the Cow Palace in Daly City. What a day--we arrived at 11:00 a.m., bed-ded our horses down and waited. Just like at the Western States Horse Expo, we answered many questions about thePeruvian Paso, and Connie in her gentle way was again an ambassador for the breed. Connie looked even smaller nextto the Arabians which she was stabled with. She was the only Peruvian Paso horse at the Grand National. At 3:30p.m., we showed in side saddle and rode out with a third place ribbon. Bev and Oledio rode at 9:30 p.m. with 10 otherArabs. What a beautiful sight to see those horses in full costume. We left at 11:00 p.m. right after Bev’s performancewith both horses and didn’t arrive back to the ranch til midnight. What a day we had, and now I can check the GrandNational Rodeo at the Cow Palace off my Bucket List. WOW!!!

REINS – Theraputic in More Ways Than Onesubmitted by Jan Pichel GronbachPhoto to the Right includes (Left to Right) Mark Polarek,Jennifer Gambrell, Me, and, of course my little mini Jockey.

I had been looking forward to this day for weeks. Thirty daysago, I started working as the new Program Officer of LegacyEndowment Community Foundation. Among its manyfunctions, Legacy manages philanthropic donations to servedonors, awards grants and scholarships, and provide leader-ship to improve the quality of life in North San DiegoCounty, forever. One of the Donors, Elisabeth Wilson, hadrequested that her endowment benefit the individuals withdisabilities, so the Executive Director Mark Polarek and Ihad visited a local program, REINS (Riding EmphasizingIndividual Needs and Strengths) to hand them a grant checkthat they hadrecently been awarded.

As a lifetime horseperson, I had been aware of the therapeutic horseback riding concept but never experienced it up closeand personal. Boy was I full of curiosity! As we pulled up (I had my boots on) there were several disabled riders withescorts traveling around in the nearest arena. We were greeted warmly by the Executive Director, Debbie Shinner andJennifer Gambrell, Development Coordinator. Their passion was contagious and felt like we had all just won a Cham-pion of Champions class! To witness the REINS program in action was a mesmerizing and life transforming experience.Debbie shared the history of the ranch and how she got started with REINS. Debbie started volunteering, eventually be-came the Executive Director, never dreaming it would turn into the program it is today! She explained that most of theparticipant’s families were also volunteers who not only work with the horses but help keep the ranch immaculate aswell. Some of the volunteers even have assigned to them their own piece of garden to tend.

Meanwhile, another disabled rider caught my eye in the far arena. A little bit of a rider with a wisp of blonde ponytailpeeking out from under her helmet was venturing a trot upon a white steed. An assistant led the horse and another trottedon the ground beside the tiny equestrian. The goal was for the miniature rider to trot a certain distance around the corral. This she did, increasing the stretch a little each time. I had to applaud along with the assistants! It was one of those mo-ments in life where you realize, with monumental pride and excitement, you just shared with someone what we usuallyconsider a simple achievement.

The next moment you experience, is one filled with humbleness. I have had the pleasure of riding and owning manyhorses. I was always seeking a better horse or a bigger championship, but all this little girl was asking of life at that mo-ment was to bond with this white horse and trot a few feet! I instantly knew that I wanted to become part of this, “pursuitof happiness.” For me, I had found the ultimate championship; to support this organization and assist them in makingmore of these little miracles happen. Later, my husband, Wayne and I attended the REINS Christmas party and he wastotally captivated by the spirit there also! We look forward to volunteering our time at REINS in the coming New Year!REINS is one of the most recent benefactors of the Elisabeth Wilson Fund through the Legacy Endowment CommunityFoundation. REINS provides an intense form of therapy on horseback to children and adults with disabilities from allover Southern California. Through the gentle movement of their specially trained horses, students at REINS gain themental, emotional and physical strength they need to improve their quality of life. For students with Autism, equine ther-apy has a focusing affect that enables them to follow directions, hold a conversation and make a connection. But for stu-dents with paralysis, the horses at REINS move their muscles in ways modern therapies still cannot replicate. This move-ment reconnects synapses and brings back the muscle memory that they need to sit up on their own, stand and even walkagain.

In the course of one year, REINS provides over 7,000 therapy sessions at 1/3 of the actual cost to ride. REINS intention-ally keeps their cost to the students low because they know their medical costs are extra-ordinary and so instead, REINSchooses to maintain high fundraising efforts. REINS will use the grant from The Elisabeth Wilson Endowment Fund tocontinue to provide this life changing therapy to its students.

REINS is open Monday thru Saturday and they love to give tours, so if you are interested in seeing the program first-handthey are more than happy to oblige. For more information on REINS go to: www.reinsprogram.org

The Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Societywas started in 2009. Most of the 21 members are fromSan Diego County. The Los Amigos BOD would like to hear from our members and exhibitors about their views on"alternative attire".

Several clubs have been allowing this option for the performance division classes, starting in 2007 at the GoldRush Classic. From there Los Amigos, Central Coast and SCPPHC have included it for many of theirshows. There always seems to be some questions (and concerns) surrounding the differences between "alternativeattire" and the traditional "whites". Also, questions seem to arise about what IS allowed versus what might bequestionable.

The current wording of the accepted attire:

Alternative Attire allowed in the Amateur Performance, Open Performance, Reining - it is NOT mandatory, rather an option for those who would like to try something different! Not permitted for Breeding or Pisos Divisions!- Hat must be of Peruvian style as outlined by NAPHA rules.- Blazer or suit-style vest MUST be worn. Bolero jackets ok. No ponchos.- Boots/belts in colors are outlined in NAPHA rules. Boots may be worn outside of pants. - Polinas & Half Chapsallowed- Slacks/pants must be long enough to cover ankle and boot tops.- Split skirts/sidesaddle aprons for women as provided for in NAPHA rules.- Shirts must be collared, long-sleeve as per NAPHA rules.- Scarves/ties include traditional Peruvian white scarf, bolo tie, western crisscross tie, necktie or brooch.Colors allowed are: Black, shades of grey (charcoal to light), browns (dark to tan/beige, khaki), shades of mutedgreens (olive to hunter), blues (light to dark navy), burgundys (no bright reds or pinks), white, creams, ivory. Smallpinstripes for jackets as outlined in NAPHA rules is acceptable. NO BLUE DENIM- NO SEQUINS- NO LOUD/BRIGHT PATTERNS

In general, the idea behind the alternative attire was to allow vests, jackets and pants/jeans in the same general col-ors as the ponchos and jackets that are allowed per NAPHA rules. IE: neutral/muted colors. LESS IS MORE! Ifyou think it might not be allowed - it probably isn't!

Alternative Attire

What NOT to wear:Yes, black, tan & whiteare allowed col-ors. Metallics, sequins, loud patterns are whatyou want to stay awayfrom!

Please let anyone on the BOD know if you have concerns or comments regarding alternativeattire. We would like to hear from you if you have suggested changes, like to see it included

in the show, don't like it, etc.

Example of a very similar outfit, butacceptable for alternative attire:- black pants, black shirt, brown

pinstriped vest.
