Unlike most utilities, they pay almost $63 million in property taxes across the province. Union Gas employs 2,200 and operates the largest integrated underground storage complex in Canada called the Dawn Hub. When people speak of high energy costs, they are usually speaking of electricity. With the business concerns of the increas- ing energy costs in Ontario and our inability to compete with our neighbours in other provinces and northern states, natural gas could potentially be a very viable and stable option. Oppor- tunities include: connecting new rural and remote communities; power generation; utilizing more natural gas for transportation; industrial uses; and energy for mining opportunities in North- ern Ontario. Union Gas infrastructure is one of the best in North America. President Shogren offered a huge Congratulations to the World Ringette Organizers and volunteers on the 50 th Anniver- sary World Championships held over the holidays. It was fantas- tic to see the international and varsity teams here in the birth- place of Ringette. Over 40 games were played in the five days which utilize all our ice and we even saw a Battalion game snuck in between. Thanks to the Jacks family for their support. President Shogren also took the opportunity at the January board meeting to provide congratula- tions to Mark King as he moves on to City Council as of January 20 th . Mark started with the Chamber board in 2002 and then took a two year hiatus coming back in 2005, he then became the President in 2006 and 2007 and remained on the board to this day, so for just over 10 years of volunteer service to the Chamber. President Shogren expressed that it has been a great honour and pleasure working with Mark on the Chamber board and some of the highlights included Mark’s tenure as the Chair of the Government Affairs committee as well as his two year term as President. Presi- dent Shogren stated “as many of you know, Mark’s dad Don was an alderman for many years with the township of Widdifield and then through the amalgamation with the City of North Bay. Mark, I can honestly say that your dad would be damn proud!” On becoming a coun- cillor, Mark will now have to tender his resignation from the Chamber board, as part of the procedural bylaws. President Shogren noted that City Council recently approved their budget for 2014. He gave credit to the current council for bringing the budget increase down to 1.57% for 2014. He noted there were items put forward by the Chamber in the pre-budget presentation to council and while some were not proven in the budget, many items were taken into considera- tion. President Shogren thanked the Executive Director Patti Carr who attended all the City budget committee meetings on behalf of the Chamber. These meetings were long hours and afforded the Chamber a deeper look and explanation into the budget.
