The Horse, Your Guide to Equine Health CareStudy: EPM's Causative Agents More Widespread than ExpectedBy Edited Press ReleaseOct 16, 2013http://www.thehorse.com/articles/32717/study-epms-causative-agents-more-widespread-than-expected

A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), School of VeterinaryMedicine confirmed that equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), caused by two different parasites,is widespread throughout the United States. The single-celled protozoal parasite Sarcocystis neurona, which is shed in the feces of opossums, is the most commonly recognized cause of this neurologic dis-ease in horses. However, this study found evidence that Neospora hughesi, the other EPM-causing agentfirst identified in California, is now being identified in horses across the United States.

After obtaining a total of 3,123 diagnostic submissions from 49 states, UC Davis researchers determinedthat horses from 42 states were affected by parasites causing EPM (see map above left). Horses in 24states tested positive for antibodies against both N. hughesi and S. neurona. Horses from 17 states testedpositive for antibodies against S. neurona only, while horses in one state—Idaho—tested positive forantibodies against N. hughesi only. As these results show a widespread distribution of the parasites caus-ing EPM, horse owners and practitioners should test EPM-suspect horses for antibodies against bothparasites.

“This study returned positive results from more states than we originally thought,” said Nicola Pusterla,DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, associate professor of equine internal medicine at UC Davis and lead re-searcher on the study. “As the recognized geographic spread of Neospora hughesi infections expands,we are encouraging horse owners about the benefits of the advanced tests available at UC Davis to moreaccurately diagnose the disease. Overall, we had not been satisfied with the standard testing available, sowe have spent the past decade developing and successfully validating an improved diagnostic tool forEPM.”

The new SarcoFluor and NeoFluor tests created by UC Davis are immunofluorescent antibody tests forboth of the known causative agents of EPM. These tests provide a quantitative indication of EPM infec-tion and, and the researchers say the tests provide greater sensitivity and specificity than the Westernimmunoblot test on serum samples. UC Davis’ tests also reduce the necessity to obtain cerebrospinalfluid in order to screen for antibodies against the two protozoal agents, the researchers say.

“UC Davis has a rich history and culture of combining rigorous peer-reviewed research with cuttingedge medicine,” said Patricia Conrad, DVM, PhD, professor and head of the laboratory at UC Davis thatdeveloped the tests. “The resources and EPM team of clinicians and scientists available at UC Davishave allowed us to validate these more effective tests. We are committed to improving the reliability ofEPM testing, and are pleased to offer this service to our clients at a reasonable cost.”

“Since its discovery in horses, EPM has posed a significant diagnostic and therapeuticchallenge,” said Claudia Sonder, DVM, director of the Center for Equine Health at UCDavis. “These new diagnostic tools are a product of the team science that changesclinical outcomes for horses treated at UC Davis.” The new tests are available throughthe laboratory services at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital(VMTH). To learn how to submit samples, contact VMTH laboratory services at530/752-VMTH or visit the UC Davis website.

Marna Pearson (October 4, 1932 ~ July 10, 2013)

I received very sad news today that long time Peruvian Pasobreed promoter, Marna Pearson passed away. Along with HowardTuttle, Marna owned Land's End Ranch. She heavily promotedthe breed by participating with the Pasobilities in several paradesincluding appearances in the Rose Parade.I was fortunate to know Marna as her & Howard brought a younggelding to Andres to train. That gelding went on to become one ofthe winningest Luxury geldings in the breed, Califa MSR+++.Marna & Howard could be found at the shows spoiling Califawith carrots, hugs, plus endless hours grooming Califa for hismany show ring victories. Along with her lovefor Califa, Marna was an animals' best friend asher & Howard always traveled with their JackRussell terriers. Both her & Howard promotedthe Peruvians out of true love for the breed. Shehad a huge heart & I was fortunate to knowthem both and will always remember theirkindness.

“Amigo”, official publication of the Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club

Submitted by Theo WagnerProper Equine TerminologyEquino correcta Terminologia, Por favor !!It seems rather evident from conversation and commer-cial advertisements that a few Peruvian Paso aficionadosand breeders (or producers) entered the Breed with noprior experience or exposure to other breeds of horses orperhaps were not fortunate enough to have learnedproper terminology as it relates to equines. Those out-side the Breed observing advertisements for sale horsesor stallions at stud are often appalled at the jargon usedand tend to judge operations and individuals as having alack of knowledge, experience and most of all, profes-sionalism. While some of the media ad descriptions orexpressions are found amusing or almost comical, theyoften leave a rather negative impact or impression withthose associated with other equine breeds who may beconsidering Peruvian Horse ownership. The human species gives birth to babies and horses givebirth to foalsHumans are born and horses are foaledOnce a foal reaches a year of age it is considered a year-ling and the proper term for the next age (approachingthe age of two) group is either a colt or a fillyHorses are not out of stallions but out of mares and siredby stallions(If this were possible it would qualify for Ripley’s Be-lieve it or Not and would be considered a scientific phe-nomenon)Just because mature male horses have two testicles theyare not necessarily sires or (Western term) studs. Whilethere are many stallions, there are few sires or studsStallions do not “throw” their progeny but rather pro-duce or sire them(As Ricky Gervais would term it, they don’t have thedexterity)If this was physically possible who would catch them??)The individual that gave birth to a foal is not the motherbut rather the damThe individual that sired the foal is not the father butrather the sireHis or her parents are generally referred to as the grand-dam or the grandsire and not the grandfather or grand-motherIt is generally accepted that once a female horse reachesthe age of four, she is no longer a filly but rather a mare.(How time does fly!)It is also acknowledged that once a male horse reachesthe age of four he is no longer a colt but rather a stallion(unless gelded).Breeding TerminologyAn architect generally draws plans to build a structureand similarly, serious breeders write up possible pedi-grees of individuals before undertaking the responsibil-ity of producing foals.

Inbreeding is very close breeding of related individuals. Asire bred to his female descendants, a dam bred to her maledescendants and sometimes full sibling to full sibling. These practices are evident in some of the older PeruvianHorse pedigrees and are in practice the world over amonghighly successful horse breeders. It is the most timely, ef-fective method of retaining and bringing forward desirablecharacteristics and establishing dominance of certain indi-viduals. The practice can also bring forward and to the sur-face certain genetic flaws present or unknown in the DNAof certain individuals.Linebreeding is the practice of crossing two related indi-viduals such as a half-brother to a half-sister (both with thesame sire or dam). This is the most common practice amongknowledgeable, experienced and successful breeders forretaining desirable characteristics of certain individuals.Outcrossing is the practice of breeding two totally unrelatedindividuals. Doing so, can be a gamble because it cannot bedetermined in advance of doing so, which of the two willpredictably dominate in desirable characteristics.Older, more experienced and successful breeders over cen-turies have always believed that the most dominant factorsin any breeding are the dam, the sire of the dam and the tailfemale line descending from the dam. This is perhaps be-cause all females carry two sex X-feminine chromosomeswhile all males carry only one with a Y-or masculine chro-mosome . For this reason, stallions often determine the sexof their descendants and while some seem dominant to pro-duce or sire fillies, others will predictably produce an abun-dance of colts. In 1997 the snow white Thoroughbred filly,Patchen Beauty made her racing debut at Churchill Downs.Although a Saudi Sheikh made an offer to buy her, she wasnot for sale. She had inherited her color from her dam, Pre-cious Beauty and her maternal granddam, White Beauty…It is often a great waste of time, money and effort to take asubstandard or mediocre mare to a great proven producingstallion. (You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear). Some stallions that are impressive performers and awardwinners in the show ring are not necessarily dominant siresable to contribute or pass on desirable characteristics.Stallions should not be selected strictly alone for only onedesirable characteristic or show ring merits and certainmares are not necessarily good or great brood candidates. It is often less expensive and requires less effort in the longrun to purchase or lease a good show or breeding specimenfrom an established, successful and experienced breederrather than attempt to produce one; especially for those withlittle or no knowledge of the Breed standard and desirablecharacteristics of ancestors that will predictably dominate. There is no logic behind the belief that all mares shouldbecome broods or all stallions should become sires. Pedi-gree, background or breeding as well as conformation anddisposition are major factors in the selection of an effectivesire or dam.

From Jan Bott (Tuck) Moen ~~“Life is a journey, not a destination.” ― Ralph Waldo EmersonWow, SO true!!! And how my 'journey' has changed within the last 15-plusmonths!! Somehow I turned a corner & took a trip to my 55th high-school class reunionand there I found my BFF, Rex Moen, who is now my husband. Sometimes one doesn'trealize that they are missing something until they find it. That's what happened to me.Rex & his twin brother Ross & I went to school together from 7th - 12th grade. He saidhe tried to get my attention in the 7th grade but, being the naive 11-year-old that I was, Ididn't realize that when he was hitting me on the arm that he was a 7th grade boy flirtingwith a girl he liked. DUH!! So, he went & found another girlfriend. On & off throughthe years I would hear tidbits about him from classmates. The last time I saw him wassometime in the mid-60's. We saw each other again, after almost 50 years, at our 55thhigh school class reunion on September 29, 2012. We became good friends after discov-ering that we had a lot in common and started dating soon after. As the 'journey' contin-ued we hit a lot of potholes. speed-bumps, yellow lights, red lights, curves, etc. but soonfound the green light. Since we'd both been married before and had a lot of family be-tween us, it became impossible to find a time that worked for everyone to come to awedding. So, we eloped to Las Vegas!! Even though all plans were made at the lastminute we were able to have our good friends there to stand up with us AND brother

Ross surprised us by flying in for the day from his summer home in Canada. Of course, bridal & groom attire con-sisted of black slacks, white western shirt for me, plaid western shirt for Rex and, of course, our black cowboyboots!!! We are happily living in our condo in Bonsall and do the best we can to make each day count and our jour-ney together an joyous one. It's awesome to marry your BFF. We also share a huge love for our beautiful PeruvianPaso horses.Oh, a little side note.....at my wedding in 1963, he was the best-man. TRUTH!!! So, I guess you could say that, after all these years, I FINALLY got the "best man. ;-)

TRUTH!!! So, I guess you could say that, after all these years, I FINALLY got the "best man. ;-)

Hello everyone!

Just to let those know, who know me personally, Iam getting back to riding my Pasos.

Medical problems have kept me sidelined for a verylong time; ten years. However, I am now able to getout and ride again here at our ranch in ArroyoGrande, San Luis Obispo County, California.

I am riding horses of my own HLCB breeding,(Hacienda la Costa, Brisosa) and an RDLF mare.My two older mares, RDLF Cipriana+++ and RDSLa Diatomea are enjoying their retirement here onthe ranch. While I don’t know how much showing Iwill be doing in the future, I hope to see many ofyou at the shows.

Best wishes,Jackie YaconoHacienda la Costa, Brisosa

Caballos De BBC Ranch Newsby Bill ChaseThe Fall Cactus Classic Multi-BreedHorse Show was held at West World inScottsdale, Az. The Peruvian PasoHorses had 5 classes plus an Open HalterClass all on Saturday, September 14,2013. Unfortunately, the classes werescheduled to start at 6:00 PM whichmeant that there was insufficient light toget any good pictures of the horses intheir classes. The horses however, wereall turned out very nicely and their riders/handlers did a great job of presenting allof them. There were 8 Peruvian PasoHorses competing in the six classes with atotal of 18 entries. No class except theOpen Halter Class had less than 3 horses.Once again the Peruvian Paso Horses hadsome of the larger classes of the showsession. Becky and Bill Chase broughtfive horses with the help of NevinMcQuarrie, Liz and Bernie Potof broughttheir gelding BEL Mojito with the help ofAmanda Heady, Sue Harwell brought hergelding Co-Realito DWB and Mary Jane“MJ” McCrory brought her mare MJMC Excepcional also with the help of Nevin McQuarrie. It was nice seeing MJ McCrory showing again. She brought MJMC Excepcional to her first show and they did verywell, placing second in the Peruvian Paso 100% Gait Class. Amanda Heady did well with BEL Mojito, winning theOpen Halter Class and placing fourth in the Peruvian Paso Novice Horse or Rider Class. Susan Harwell started outnot doing as well as she normally does on her well gaited gelding Co-Realito DWB, but after a tack adjustment cameback and won the Peruvian Paso Open Performance Class. Becky Chase did a nice job of exhibiting our favorite stal-lion, BBC Sirocco and Nevin McQuarrie made our gelding JLV Tambo Grande and our mare BBC La Sombra En LaLuna look very good in their classes.Once again however, the stars of the show were the two Junior Riders. Sierra Hardin came back after her excellentfirst show in May and put on a very strong performance with our mare BBC Evita, win-ning a first, a second and a third against very nicely shown horses. And her younger sis-ter, Saige Hardin made her show debut in exactly the same way as Sierra made her showdebut in May, by winning two firsts and a second. It was especially nice for us to seeSaige Hardin and BBC Centauro doing so well since this was Centauro’s first show afterbeing laid up for over a year with a back injury. Welcome back BBC Cantauro, and watchout for him and Saige Hardin in future shows! Thanks to everyone who helped out at the show and especially to the Show Manager andAnnouncer, Joe Husband. More Ranch NewsSubmitted by Jan Moen ~~And so it began..........my venture into "showmanship"!! All I wanted was a trailhorse for my husband!! What do you do when you find a beautiful horse like RCACorazon de Oro, who has this stellar show record (as I've been told)???? Do I ig-nore the many requests to finish out the show season for 2013 and make peopleunhappy as well as feeling like I'd let a horse down?? "No thank you", I said, over& over. Did they listen?? NO!!! Did I stick to my guns??? NO!!! So, the formswere filled out & the checks were written. The whites were washed, the hat &poncho purchased and the scarf & scarfring were borrowed....geez, sounds likea wedding. Fortunately, I already hadboots. On Friday, September 4, 2013, Ibegan my venture into "Novice-land". WOW & WHOA!!! What atrip. Thank goodness I didn't have toomany other novices to competeagainst...one or two was enough!!! For-

tunately, Corazon knew what to do in spite of the fact that I held the reins'too tight', 'too crooked', didn't 'relax' enough, went 'too fast', went 'too slow'& even had our own rodeo in the corner. Somehow, through all those obsta-cles, not counting the flower pots, we managed to win two blue ribbons ineach class for a total of eight blue ribbons. This then qualified us for High-Point Novice and we received two beautiful neck ribbons and two beautifultrophies. Thanks to the awesome photography of Lee Locke, we have somebeautiful pictures to help us remember our time in the ring.

Well, a "high" can lastonly so long!!! Amonth later, anothershow. This one didnot have any noviceclasses so it was time to ride with the BIG guns. Of course itdidn't help that Corazon seemed to be having a "bad-hair-day"during the first class which made me even more nervous than Ialready was. Once again, I managed to hold the reins too tight, crooked, didn't relax and I don't think I was even breathing. I'msurprised that I didn't 5th place with only 4 horses in the class. Itthen became time to plan my strategy....find a rider who knewwhat they were doing. Thank you Kelly Powers-Ponciano forbeing available. Corazon's second place ribbon qualified him fora reserve champion & champion class. However, two disruptionsin the stands made him antsy and Kelly said that he wouldn't lis-ten to her after that. Hmmmm, even a GOOD rider had a prob-lem so I don't feel quite so bad now. Next year will be a com-pletely new chapter in the "show journey". Hopefully, with aLOT of practice, patience, love, oh yes, a new saddle, bridle, hal-ter, etc. we will do much better. And added to ALL that will be alot more instruction from my awesome trainer Janic Arllentar. As for this gorgeous & loving stallion...yes, I'm talking about myhorse....I have been truly blessed to have him in my life. He'ssuch a loving soul and is beautiful to look upon. I love to hold

his head in my arms & love on him as long as he'll let me. He loves to have me use my phony fingernails to scratch hisneck & when I softly scratch each side of his nose it's sweet to see him slowly close his eyes. I believe that in or out ofthe show ring and on or off of the trail, we will have a wonderful, loving & long-lasting relationship. Oh, did I mentionthat I bought him as a trail horse for my husband? <GIGGLE>

More Ranch NewsGreetings from Del Dios Peruvians!

So what's going on here? Oh, all the normalboring stuff. Cattle sorting, driving in carts, beach rides, ACTHA rides, horse camping, andcreating horse costumes.

We had a ranch campout weekend at Casper'sWilderness Park. We had great trail rides in-cluding going through an area I call the en-chanted forest! I must say that we have several amazingcooks and the food was off the hook! Here are some pho-tos of the weekend! Several of us also attended a weekend

campout at Reed ValleyRanch where we got to sortcattle!

Attending the Nationalswas a dream come true forme. Highlights are Morywinning his performanceclass, being so good in the

Costume class, and masterfully demonstrating his ability ofpulling the cart! CM Nacional and I reached our personalgoal, and the thrilling run off we did in the gait class is amemory I will always treasure.

Thank you Carole Serras for designing and creating ourwonderful costume for Nationals! I would like to thank allthe people that physically supported me at the Nationalshow., Carole Serras, Nash Jimenez, Lisa Marie Walker,Judy Wind-Walker, Cynthia Kirby, Lindsay Wiley, TinaIto, Dennis Ito, and Sheila Burke.

The people that allowed me to do extra work to earn moneyfor the Nationals, or sponsored me are:Dee Gleason, Becky Smith, Debbie Bachna, HeidiMcLaughlin, Pete McLaughlin, Kyle Johnson, Mike Ma-honey, Michael Olsen, Lindsay Wiley, Carole Serras, Suz-anne Dimeff, Barbara Larsen, Dee Gleason, Tina Ito,Meredith Kifer, Diana Buchanan, and Sheila Burke.THANK YOU ALL!

Now we are turning our attention to competitive trail rid-ing. Please consider joining us on Oct 27th or ask me howyou can put one of these events on! They are fun and edu-cational for riders, and profitable! Oh and I may as wellannounce this! I am working for ACTHA in the position ofInstructor Liaison! I amreally enjoying it, and so Ican now be contactedanytime [email protected]

Warmly,

Jody Childs

Here is some-thing new fortrail riders totry! It's calledan ACTHAAOC which isan obstaclechallenge! Youride in a small

group to the judges with your friends and cheer eachother on. The judge scores the horse on a scale of 1 to 10and the rider the same way on each challenge with a totalpossible of 20 points. Then you ride to the nextone......after all the riders are through, you can declare"gambler's choice" and goback through the course, for practice or a newscore, you choose.....butthe second time scoreswill stick!

We have a lovely facilitywith lots of areas to rideand enjoy all day outsideof the competition. If you would like to volunteer at theevent, let me know! Lisa Walker Photography will behere to capture wonderful photos of all riders.

And, we have lots of prizes for you! There are manydivisions, Junior, Scout, Pleasure, Open.....and as this isso close to Halloween, we will also have prizes for thebest horse costume and the best rider costume!

Super large trailers won't fit inour ranch. Please no rig largerthan a standard 3 horse slant!Jody Childs [email protected] or call 858 354 8537

Memories…………..by Jo Ward

These are some of the items which come tomind from past shows Way past ones.

There was an earthquake just as we wereleaving the show grounds following a show inSanta Barbara. As you know there are traintracks along 101. There was a freight trainheaded north and the tracks had been dis-turbed by the earthquake. Some of the carsfrom the train fell off the tracks. They werefalling towards the highway. We definitelybroke the speed limit for a short time as weattempted to get away from the falling cars. itwas a scary departure. We were told thatmost of the horses still on the show groundswere fine. Weren't even fazed by the quake.

Lucho San Bartolome had a beautiful blackpickup truck. He would fill the bed with iceand chill champagne. Naturally all the ex-hibitors bellied up to the trough to partake andtell stories about their classes and how theywon or lost. Lots of good tales told. Sometrue and some false, but definitely worth lis-tening to. We should have had a prize for thebest and biggest lie - like a liar's contest.

Luetta Michael was by far the most fabulousand gracious of hostesses. She made out ofthis world cocktail treats. There was never abite left after the parties.

Then there was the time in Ventura when Stu-art Hamblen came onto the fairgrounds withwhat resembled a huge chicken coup on aflatbed. Yes, there was a horse there as well.He was bringing in his new stallion. Therewas quite a group of spectators watching thisarrival. Later that weekend there was a dinnerat which Stuart took charge of the unplannedentertainment. His stories were hilarious. Hetold about his song "This Old House". Hewas shocked when he heard the most popularversion being sung. It was not the intendedmanner in which he expected it to be sung. Itturned out to be a very popular version. Ifyou had never heard Stuart take charge of adinner table, you have really missed a won-derful folk story teller. He was the best. Askhis daughter about the time she opened up arefrigerator in their garage and found a moun-tain lion which he had shot. It was one thathad been evading the local authorities.

RANCHO VISTA DEL SOL NEWS

Cathy and I have been busy with our ranch with both ourhorses and birds. Safari del Sol (aka “Skyfari” since hisexperience in the mountains last year) is doing great. Hehad no permanent problems from his fall down themountain and has been on multiple trail rides since andis progressing wonderfully on track to becoming myreplacement for my long time trail horse, JRMRealengo, who is now retired except for short easy rides.

Cathy and I have been showing, trail riding, and breed-ing our horses. Trail riding of note include a three dayride at the famous Roy Rogers Ranch in Oro Grande lastMarch with the High Desert Trail Riders. We took ourstallion, Campeon del Sol and Cathy’s new trail mare,Talara del Sol. This ride included riding several milesas well as both horses first time water training. Just outof camp was a 20’ wide river crossing with clear run-ning water. Cathy pushed Talara tight behind anotherexperienced horse planning to push her in before shesaw the water. This worked fine until the horses in frontstalled out stopping her in the middle of the water.Campeon was directly behind and had no problem get-ting in until they stopped at which time he hit deeperwater and leaped forward driving Talara forward. Alittle exciting for a few seconds but no one was injured.Coming back Campeon led Talara into the water butTalara was tired and decided she saw no reason to crosswith him. She planted her feet as if she had roots andrefused to go forward. Cathy tried pushing her but whenthis didn’t work other riders went to the rescue (theythought). One rider on a huge Missouri Fox Trotter tookher lead and another got behind her trying to encourageher in. The trotter pulled and ultimately the lead slippedloose and they almost fell into the water and drivingfrom behind didn’t work. At just that time Cathy de-cided the best thing was to simply get off and lead Ta-lara into the water. Talara simply walked right in be-hind Cathy with no resistance. Cathy stood her in thewater for a few minutes and she relaxed. Cathy thenmounted while in the water and the two slowly walkedout and back to camp so Cathy could pour the water outof her boots. I have included a few pictures of the ranchand water crossing with this report. One of the greatthings of riding with HDTR is that they are all highlyexperienced riders and helping with young horses is notdeemed as an inconvenience at all. I have ridden withthem for 25 years and have seen many instances of train-ing others young horses by all. The week-end was agreat success. HDTR has its members each put on atrail ride for the club once a month in their respectiveliving areas which makes for a great variety of riding

locations and terrains. Their rides range from the Sierrasto Anza and are closed to all but members and guests. They have a web page under their name for those whomay be interested. Let me know if you would be inter-ested in attending one of their rides but remember they arediehard riders expecting to ride about 20 miles on Satur-day and 12 miles on Sunday. It’s great riding but only forconditioned horses and riders.

So much for plugging our trail riding club. Cathy and Ialso recently went camping at the new Green River HorseCamp at Cuyamaca. We had originally planned to campwith the Grossman’s and Lilliam Thurston all of whomhad to cancel for various reasons so it ended up just Cathyand me. This was fine with us as we love pleasure ridingtogether and had a great 3 days. The weather was perfectand the trails are fantastic and beautiful. Although I havebeen riding in Cuyamaca for over 20 years I had alwaysridden from the old horse camps in the opposite end of thepark and had not ridden this far south. The camp sites areexcellent with plenty of shade, great separate corrals, andplenty of access for all sizes of rigs. I have included apicture of our horses in the camp site. You typically needreservations in advance but we would not have neededthem had we just shown up. They even have a couple ofsite dedicated for the handicapped which are great.

In addition to riding and showing our horses, we have alsobred a couple. Cathy bred her show mare, Arusha del Sol,to Jorge Valenzuela’s Rompe Corazones. We have alsobred Talara del Sol to Debbie Pye’s and Jorge’s stallion,Payaso. Talara is a cremelo which pretty much guaranteesa buckskin. I wanted a buckskin so am really looking for-ward to next summer!!

Beyond our horses, Cathy and I have been quite busy withour birds. We’ve had a bumper crop of conures as well asa few more exotic species. Cathy hand raises all birds tomake them good pets and then sells them at bird martswith other breeders. Birds make great companions and arehighly intelligent. Cathy has been raising birds since 1985dealing with all kinds of species. Our home is an indooraviary with cages of sale birds. We raise everything fromthe tiniest Parrotlet toLilac Crown Amazons.

Well that about bringsus current with ourranch activities of therecent past.

Editor’s Note: For those who may not know, Ihave a personal web site http://www.wepye.com/.At this location I have posted lots of things aboutthe Peruvian Paso horse with heavy emphasis onCalifornia, history & photography (my personalpassions). In the past year, I've been building 350+pages of California show history, using the oldNAPHA HorseStudBook, old PPHRNA website, old AAOBPPH website, Peruvian Digest and vari-ous club websites. I've also been able to go backthrough many Peruvian Paso magazines, startingfrom the late 1970's, to include what show results Icould find. Plus, a few folks have been generousenough to loan me show results that they had kept. The website pages start at http://www.wepye.com/Pasos/Awards.htm. Now, my disclaimer.....this is alabor of love. Tho, I have tried to be as thorough aspossible, mistakes are going to be made. So,please, do not hesitate to contact me with anythingthat looks suspicious. NAPHA U.S. National Championship Show Costume Class

I love Halloween, I really do. I get to besomeone or something else for a while. Add thatto horses and you have a winner. The NAPHANational Costume class is the ultimate way toexpress your deep inner desires on horseback. Some of the entrants frightened me, sister/brotherLarry (cough cough).

I know you are all wondering if my deep innerdesire is to be a redneck, bearded, crusty old fart.Let me assure you, it is not. My inner desire to bea pretty princess was expressed in the sidesaddleclass. This time I decided to basically be the guyin the next cube at work. I shared my originalidea with him, which led to our discussion of thetopic and Duck Dynasty came up. We bothlaughed so hard at the thought of Uncle Si ridingaround on Poetica I switched my idea over to that.No I am not going to tell you my original idea, Imay use that one next time.

I knew I could pull off Si as he is my favoritecharacter on my favorite show, but what to dowith the horse? I thought she might make a snappy looking Wil-lie but she is a hot looking redhead and he has dark hair, whichwas not going to work. I settled on their favorite activity, hunt-ing. I needed to hide my mount so I decided to cover her withcamouflage burlap and hide in my “duck blind”. I basically threwa sheet over the horse. I never would cover her face as I feel it isunsafe but I was concerned she might be recognized. I was goingto use the black makeup on her face to put her into duck huntingmode but feared it might not all come out before the Champion-ships on Sunday. I am so glad I didn’t paint her as I am still re-moving that black makeup off my own face.

I got sick two weeks before Nationals and could not make hercostume until the last minute. I ordered what I needed on lineand put it all together the week of the show. I did my practicerun in the barn aisle on Wednesday night before we left to see ifPoetica minded her crazy owner riding covered in burlap, shedidn’t. I cut her burlap into two pieces so I could dismount easilyin an emergency and have easy access to my stirrups. To make itmore fun, I snuck over to the neighbor’s cattle field and cut a fewbranches off her pep-per tree to weave intothe burlap covering.A few binder clips tokeep it in place, abandana on her browband and my redneckduck blind was com-plete. For good meas-ure I made a fewstuffed ducks fromsome old materiallying around in mysewing room. I wasup sewing thosedarned ducks until11pm each night. Ilove to sew my ownriding outfits andcostumes.

I watched a Duck Dynasty marathon to get Un-cle SI’s character down. He is never without histrusty cup from his days in Vietnam and his jugof iced tea. He always wears that darned capand hair in a pony tail. How can you not lovethis guy? Of course I had to have a duck calland a gun. I purposely used a gun that was asfake as I could find; no need to get some antigun fanatic riled up. The toy gun will be do-nated to Toys for Tots this Christmas at work, Idon’t really need it. Now my costume and ideaare complete.

I wanted to keep this a secret so I did not preenter the class so my name would not be in thebook. I love a good surprise. I also figured if Icover myself before the class and do my big“reveal” in the ring it might be a bit more dra-matic and quite funny. Things did not go ac-cording to the plan. I did not anticipate havingto do a lap around the ring and my friend, whowas the dog, was unable to jog along as she hasa bad knee. The energy and noise in the ring

freaked Poetica out just a bit. Being basically blind, holding alarge jug of tea and a nervous horse I felt it was best to gostraight to the centerand to the judge. Itold him I was hav-ing an issue andneeded to do my bigreveal early. Iflipped off my coverand the crowderupted in screamsand cheers. I amglad I wore the grayduck hunters cam-ouflage paint as Iwas blushing prettybadly at this pointfrom the attention.Poetica settleddown, I told mynaughty dog to stayand I got into character. I have to say, playing Uncle Si isquite the blast. I did not realize it at the time that no one reallyknew who I was. I had friends waving at me acting like theyknew me and come to find out after the class they did notknow it was me. I think that was the most fun I have had at ashow, riding around with all the cheering for the competitors.Having my best buddy play the dog was priceless. I gave herfree rein to do as she wanted and she put on quite the show.

After the class I had so many people approach me and tell methey did not know it was me. I thought that was odd until Isaw the photo’s on line. I did not even recognize myself! It’safter the show now and I am back to being amiddle aged chubby chick again, I think Iprefer being the crusty old coot on horseback.

As a newer member of NAPHA and of Southern California Peruvian Paso clubs, when I heard theNational Horse Show was going to be held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, I felt here was anopportunity to meet all the people I had spoken with in my quest for a filly. A Kick Off Party, wel-coming all Exhibitors and participants to the Los Angeles area would be a great way to accomplishthis and jumpstart the weekends festivities celebrating our unique breed, The Peruvian Paso Horse.

I wanted an evening that would be easy for everyoneto attend and would feature the Peruvian culture, Art,Music food and drink. So, I reached out to The Peru-vian Chamber Of Commerce and people I had met inthe breed, sampling my idea, my first supporters, ThePeruvian Chamber of Commerce and Alberto Lummisthought it was smart and offered support and assis-tance. Alberto, in the breed for quite some time, knewpeople to contact that would further assist our cause.Jo Dykema, a party planning maven, gave me guid-

ance on creating a look for this proposedevent.

I previously met photographer, Ana MariaGarcia Montero at a gallery opening of herwork and thought she was the right fit for theArt portion of the evening. Her photographscapture the noble spirit of our breed andwould serve as the perfect backdrop to our festivities. Next cameFood, Alberto introduced me to Carlos Galvez, owner of the Peru-vian Restaurant near by, Con Sazon and as the food was excellent, they were in as our Food, and with Alberto’s input, they helped me

construct a small plate’s menu of some traditional dishes.Drink, well there is no better signature than Pisco and hav-ing been to a function where Pisco Porton had been served, Iasked them if they would assist me with a Pisco drink, yepthey were in! In addition, a very generous donation of winewas made by, the Breeder and NAPHA member who Ibought my beautiful fillies, Dr. Jorge Galante, the wines, from his vinyard, Crios Malbec and Crios Rose De Malbec, both very well crafted selections by his very celebrated winepartner, Susana Balbo. Music was easy, my trainer, JanicArllentar’s wife, Melissa, is an Actress and Pop Star in Peru, with several CD’s in the market place, so I asked her to singa few of her songs.

This idea was now a full-blown event! And the final ele-ment of support came from the Peruvian Paso Breeders and

Exhibitors Club, they gave me the ability to finalize thedetails.

Judging by the many pictures taken by journalist, Mi-lagros Lizarraga and that surfaced on facebook, I wouldsay the evening was a success and I am hoping that it willbe the start of a new tradition. I also want to give addi-tional thanks to all the club’s members who came to myaide along the way, you all offered the support and enthu-siasm that contributed greatly to this event’s success.
