LAND,Landscape Architecture Nature Development, is a group of professionals working in the field of landscape architecture and was founded in 1990 in Milan by Andreas Kipar and Giovanni Sala. Research and inter-disciplinary work are fundamental principles of the practice.

From the open space design to landscaping in general, the LAND approach to a project has always been extensive and comprehensive, with an understanding and correct interpretation of the territory on an ample scale. Since it’s foundation, LAND has taken a keen interest in urban and territorial planning and is increasingly committed to the multi-disciplinary approach of strategic masterplans.

The group guarantees assistance to its private and public clients through a certified Quality Management System, from environmental evaluations to construction and management of landscape projects. Now well established in Europe, LAND wishes to bring it’s “ethos” from GREY TO GREEN to new international markets.

International Landscape Architect and Urban Planner, Andreas Kipar obtained his undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture in Rhur, Germany. He then graduated with honors in Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. He works at a high professional level in the field of planning and landscape design, with emphasis on environmental recovery on different scales. He teaches in various European universities.He is a member of the presidential Council of the German Association of Landscape Architects (BDLA), a member of the Italian Association of Landscape Architects (AIAPP), of the German Association for Garden Design and Landscape Architecture (DGGL) and the Italian National Institute of Urban Planning (INU). Since 2005 he has been a member of the German Urban and Landscape Planning Academy (DASL). He won many landscape awards such as: The Italian Institute for Urban Planning Award; the European Award for Landscape Architecture of ELCA; the “North Renania Westfalia Landscape Architecture Award” LandschaftsArchitektur-Preis NRW and the Special Landscape Prize of Sardinia.

Porta Nuova reunites the Garibaldi, Varesine and Isola projects in the single biggest urban development operation ever carried out in the heart of Milan: 290,000 sqm of unused land that has been deteriorating for over 50 years. The creation of a large park, the human dimension, the institutional and social importance of the site are all factors underlying this environmental, urban and infrastructural sustainable development. The project contains three sustainability concepts: urban, infrastructural and environmental. The redevelopment of the Porta Nuova district is seen as the natural evolution of the existing neighborhoods, each with its own history and identity, to be safeguarded and enhanced through high quality public spaces, squares, pedestrian paths and the Porta Nuova Gardens.

The aim is not just that of creating an area of transit between the three zones, but a destination in its own right, a venue where the Milanese will come to meet and socialize. Within this perspective a series of cultural venues will be offered, meeting the local needs and Milan’s desire to develop a sustainable urban strategy, in order to become appealing and competitive on a larger scale, both increasing its power and potential and proactively managing its growth. The Portello project started in 2000 and occupies 240,000 sqm. The area once housed the Alfa Romeo and Lancia factories. This site represents the new north gate of the city, which leads to the motorway system, and interacts with the ‘great diagonal’ in the Gino Valle general masterplan. It will be the threshold and connection between the Trade Fair and the new “Piazza Mercato” (market square). The park under construction is about 70,000 sqm and can be considered a focal point marking the access to the city.Charles Jencks together with Andreas Kipar outlined the morphological modeling of the hill, which creates a system of diagonal continuity with Monte Stella, the historically famous artificial hill created by Piero Bottoni after World War II. DIESEL HEADQUARTER BREGANZE, ITALY

The new Diesel Headquarters masterplan is located in the typically hilly landscape of Berganze, in the Vicenza region. The building has been set into the site at a half-hypogeal level. The green spaces design comes from reading the historical and contemporary landscape typologies, letting its traces influence the project to create a relationship between nature and architecture.A mediation between this new architecture and the context is defined by a large green border, created through shaping the ground’s morphology. The new buildings, completed with rich vegetation of native and naturalized species, are placed in sequence and define an articulated system of visuals inside and outside the area. Because of this the buildings are cushioned and a pleasant and protected environment is defined by a series of hills and green shields, noticeable from a distance. ( 2006 - 2010 )

The project of the Thyssen-Krupp Headquarter’s park in Essen – a pivotal area within the 230 hectares of the Krupp belt - interacts with the selected architectural design of the headquarter, carried out by JSWD Architects and Chaix & Morel. The construction will involve new headquarters for 2000 employees in Essen. The landscape design idea is to create a sort of open and public campus which includes, at the same time, areas dedicated to the Thyssen- Krupp’s employees. The central element is the water axis with the tree-lined boulevard, made up by trees coming from all over the world. A “business-way” system of paths directly connects the focal points of the park. A green “passepartout” with a cluster of trees and low hills, contains the involved area. ( 2006 - 2013 )

Since the 2006 competition, Krupp Park has come to life. It covers 220.000 sqm in the city of Essen and fills an urban void between the Altendorf neighbourhood and the city center. Aside the new Krupp-Boulevard and the Thyssen-Krupp-Headquarter, with 400.000 cubic meters of earth being moved, the “Five Hills” park is placed, the main feature being a 10.000sqm wide lake, where a long meandering path leading south begins. The park represents a versatile green space that can be used by everyone and easy to live in. ( 2006 - 2013 )

The Krefeld public park has developed an important green connection between city and landscape. The line of trees forms the backbone of the project and along the curved path, some rows of trees in bloom find their place. The species have been chosen so that the flowering starts to the east and continues towards the west.The park design creates free spaces and genuine places in which aesthetics, sensuality and poetry create a new atmosphere.The project won the 2006 Nordrhine-Westafalen state Landscape Architecture Prize. Thanks to the modernization of two 155-meter towers of the Deutsche Bank headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, based on architect Mario Bellini’ designs (Milan) and GMP, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (Frankfurt), the buildings developed to a showpiece both in architectural and creative terms, as well as in technical and functional terms. The standards of the U.S. Green Building Council for the development of an economic, ecological and sustainable design and construction were matched.These planning principles also provide guidelines for the design of the exterior and are also reflected in the surrounding areas. The property “The Wave” in Frankfurt is in a very central, urban location. The shaft is seen as part of an overall urban “ensemble”, which goes beyond the area and is in total spatial relation to its surroundings. The open space design, developed by the conceptual fusion of selected materials, shapes and creates an impressive atmosphere .The new masterplan integrates functional demands and offers a new high quality level in terms of movement, quality of life and in terms of orientation. Light design is also integrated in order for it to deal with the existing scenario and in order to create a highly comfortable atmosphere. The whole project has the aim to achieve flexibility with a high standard of environmental comfort. ( 2014 - ongoing )

The Green Rays project defines and promotes a new slow mobility, as green arteries in Milan’s urban fabric. The eight green rays, each of them for a different area in town, stemming from the inner city and expanding outwards to the edge of city to merge in a circular green ring, are the future location for a possible bicycle and pedestrian mobility path, for a total length of 72 kilometers. The Green Rays project connects existing and new parks, some of them are re-qualifications of industrial areas, designed by LAND, such as: Bicocca, Ex-Maserati, Ex Alfa Romeo, Ex area OM. ( 2003 )

ESSENMASTERPLANESSEN, GERMANY

Connection and relationship between green and open space within the municipal area, the masterplan balances existing differences in quality and quantity between Essen’s North and its South concerning recreation areas. The planned regeneration of the river Emscher and its streams was the origin of this masterplan. It uses the inner-municipal streams as leading components (“rays”) to link the existing green space and develop visible connectivity. ( 2005 )

ESSEN MASTERPLAN, GERMANY

Arcipelago Verde is a new way of conceiving open spaces in Rome, joining central areas in town with the existing parks, as well as enhancing the value of the “Agro Romano”, the greatest heritage of the Roman landscape. A large territory surrounding Rome, with a surface of 212.000 hectares, mainly consisting of agricultural areas enriched with monuments, aqueducts, natural and archeological sites. A varied landscape which is unable at present to relate to the city, and which could become instead the Capital’s real innovation lab. ( 2012 )

The “Arcipelago Verde” model promotes a preservation strategy together with a strategy of territorial development: new spaces to socialize and a new identity for the suburbs, the creation of public spaces interconnected by a “slow” network of paths, the promotion and enhancement of urban and regional parks spread in the roman suburbs. This is an example of the features on which the definition of green spaces along the Ring Road is based, an archipelago of areas intended to shape the new Capital’s great green belt.

“Parco delle Sabine” considers itself a big “landscape container”, defined by the planting system, as a proper method to “draw”, “define”, “organize” a sizable park. Reconsidering the study on morphology and on the evolution of the roman landscape (the “Agro” and its development through the centuries), new margins, backgrounds and back-stages have been created to place large and empty areas into a frame. “Islands” of trees along the sides of the slopes have been planted, existing or planned and systems for water collection have been placed. The drainage counteracts water erosion, thus helping to create a low maintenance park able to sustain itself. ( 2009 )

URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN PORTA DI ROMA DISTRICT

The idea for the EXPO-Site is based on a circular pavilion arrangement with a sun-like sphere in the center, illuminated boulevards covered by trees, radiating into the surrounding parking lots and connecting the site with the surrounding roads.The design respects the two main axis: the central green boulevard leading to the city center and the university axis. A circular ring, covered by trees and coupled with a circular water basin, leads the visitors to one of the four entrances.

The EXPO hub’s articulated project is progressing quickly due to the opening of the thematic park in May 2015. The EXPO hub includes all the outside spaces, as well as the main paths and green areas but also the canals, the squares and the entrances to the park. LAND has the task of giving the contractor who is carrying out the work, specialist assistance, and is helping with furniture and plant specifications. LAND has been involved in project management of the external works, and supervising the contractors’ work.

A new commercial and exhibition frontier. A real estate complex within a larger operation, adapted to accommodate a modern and exclusive exhibition area of over 10,000 sqm, will be built. A virtuous project of urban regeneration, a brownfield to be reclaimed without consumption of new soil, perfectly in tune with the growing European sensitivity towards environmental issues and energy efficiency. WATERFRONT REQUALIFICATION

The masterplan concept originated from the interpretation of the existing landscape, which extends itself between the railway and the highway: concentrating urban functions in this strip avoids the continuous sprawl and fragmentation of farming land, and offers an alternative development model. Through the redevelopment and enhancement of these traces, LAND finally came to define a new set of “green rooms” within the strip, through a new concept of land planning that leads to the birth of a new urban built-up area between the two infrastructures.( 2010 )

The Alfa Romeo redevelopment area will trigger dynamic relationships with the environment and with the project of the park. Together with the shopping mall, it will activate new paths which will transform the area into a vital place: business and recreational opportunities will give new life to this portion of the territory, modifying people’s way of seeing it, from an industrial area to a new multifunctional centre, with a strong presence of greenery. Jean Nouvel’s Studio designed a comprehensive project for Kilometrorosso, conceived as a landmark alongside the Milan-Venice highway. A red wall along the highway gives identity to the project, protecting the buildings surrounded by the park’s vegetation, with light penetrating the transparent geometry of the buildings and with an informal softness of the greenery.It is a continuous green system, completely pedestrian, that draws the initial inspiration from the Kilometrorosso itself. The strong connection between the red wall, the language of car racing, speed and the high technological vocation of the whole architectural complex, was the inspiration of this project. The project wants to be the chance for the enhancement of an already urbanized area, compromised by the presence of several environmental downfalls, such as infrastructures, large parking lots, industrial and commercial sheds, quarries.The new landscape arrangement of the complex largely contributes to the rebuilding of an urban area that because of this, will take on a new identity, aiming to enrich and enhance the quality and the use of the area. The project features many pavilions in an enclosed area intended to be an open public space. The new hospital building is an integrated building that creates a system starting from the “Polo Medico” and the “Polo Materno Infantile” (Central building).The green system has been very carefully thought of and designed and covers the services platform and the gallery connecting all the structures at ground floor level. The garden and the gallery are, on different levels, the interface of the new structure with public space, the contribution of the Central building to the articulation of the existing (and potential) gardens’ network and a net for public and service spaces. HISTORICAL GARDEN RESTORATION

Architect Francesco Solmi designed this villa, the gardens and the park for the Feltrinelli family at the end of 19th century, adopting an openly declared eclectic style.The park was abandoned for over 25 years, but is now back to its original splendor thanks to the restoration operated for several years, whilst transforming the villa into a hotel. The LAND project recovered for the park all the existing plants, making them more vigorous and enabling them to bloom again, and introduced new trees contributing to a more modern and romantic appearance of the park itself. The restoration of the gardens surrounding the antique villa, the Royal Boschetti and the redevelopment of Viale Cesare Battisti, are designed to re-establish the relationship between the Villa, the Park and the surrounding areas. The basic principles expressed in the “Charter of Restoration of Historic Gardens” called “Charter of Florence”, formed the basis for the design.The project identifies a few areas based on similar features under the landscape-architectural profile and the conservation status of green elements and other elements such as: Viale Cesare Battisti; Avancorte, Court of Honor and other areas pertaining to the Villa, Ex Botanical School and Expo Area, English Garden; Royal Boschetti; Ex Laundry Area. . Gut Kaden near Hamburg, is the first German TPC-Course (Touring Players Championship Course) from 1992 to 2007. URBAN AND LANDSCAPE PLANNING COMPETITION

The design solution chosen is “a veil of Zaragoza” intended as a park in progression, a strategy that becomes a careful urban landscape, an ongoing process of transformation of the city: the future home of Expo 2008. The “veil” takes shape and defines 3 elements, water, soil and vegetation. Water refers to the river Ebro and its tributaries, to groundwater, to soil geomorphology of the site and the vegetation of the forest that will “dress up” the entire area. The 4th element, the “Cierzo“, a wind of particular intensity (up to 150 km / h) coming from the west, wasn’t forgotten and was thought of as a natural element capable of characterizing the entire project: the streets, the squares, green spaces have been “designed” to deal with its strength. The masterplan design stems from the analysis of the landscape of Rovinj that sees the gradual permeation, from north to south, between the “mineral“ landscape, represented by the urbanization including the historical city center, and the “natural” landscape. The project area between these two different landscapes is conceived as a place for entertainment and leisure that connects the old town, public spaces and green areas through a seaside promenade. This becomes a distinguishing feature and the image of a stretch of coastline which potentially extends itself for miles and is comparable to the best known walks in Europe. The entire project can be appreciated through the light network of bicycle and pedestrian mobility, integrated with existing paths and land resources: the sea, the inner cycle routes, the network of trails and hiking areas, historic and environmental centers and service system. The largest green space in Beirut, the ‘Foret des Pins’, although designed constructed and with vegetation planted some 15 years ago, has never been opened to the public due to political and security concerns. The NWD is the contemporary extension of an ancient city, planned and designed as a thoroughly modern and forward-looking district. To achieve an outstanding public space that reflects excellence in design and unique contemporary identity, clearly recognizable to be both eastern Mediterranean and Lebanese, the proposal is to join structures for cultural recreation, leisure and sports, spread in apparently unordered areas, accompanying the landscape from the city to the sea, in a visual “degradé” of elements. Political Capital of the Kingdom, the seat of the government, and the primary residence of the King of Morocco, Rabat combines the old and the new. Rabat, which will be declared first green city of Morocco, closes the distance from the other cities of the Kingdom as far as environmental protection and development of the green spaces is concerned. The public parks are concentrated around the axis which goes from the amphitheater gateway to the new tidal marina, which represents a strong concentration of playful and relaxing activities. Thus the amphitheater becomes an occasion for a vertical park developed on different levels and with different areas for pausing in the shade of perfumed pergolas; instead the main piazza is a suspended piece of wood on a veil of water identifying the visual connection between the two marinas and its edges. The landscape project that surrounds the Central Bank of Libya is to be considered as a complex garden, where multiple elements like orange trees, pomegranates, figs, almond trees and olive trees create a fascinating and ever changing space. Colours, fragrances and different shapes mark out the different spaces along the main boulevard that, starting from the new entrance on the roundabout, will pass through the Public Park and will lead into the real heart of the project, the Garden, and will end in the Central Courtyard, a true oasis characterized by an explosion of vegetation. The proposed Garden aims to be the synthesis of this heterogeneous historical and cultural backdrop. A mosaic made of evocative tiles. A garden made in several parts but unitary as a whole, in which some of the typical features of the Libyan landscape will be recalled. ( 2013 )

The park is in an area where there are tens of thousands of families. The landscape project aims at building places to relax, where to go for walks , with playgrounds for children along with other thematic areas.

The Khodynka park field has seen some active development since 2004: the Stadium and the residential complex have been built here. In December 2012 the Moscow Government gave its approval to build a modern art museum in Khodynskoe Pole. After this the authorities decided to initiate the construction of a new city park in Khodynskoe Field. ( 2013 - ongoing )

In a strong spatial and contextual dialogue between landscape and river, the “Fluid Landscape” sends out three rays like green arteries, from the river bank into the urban core of the design plan. Using topographical features, the Fluid Landscape is divided into zones with different characteristics: the extended flooding area between the water and the curved riverside path creates all along a natural “spreading room” for the river Moskva, that flows smoothly into the ecological context of the surrounding river bends. The park is based on the preservation of the natural balance of existing green areas, renovation and addition of new vegetal species, which will increase the area’s natural assets. The park is a green forest with elements of Russian fairy tales, traditions and customs, which will educate the children to love the history of the country, its native land and the beauty of Russian nature. Odintsovo city situated in the new green axis coming from the Moscow city, and have a great potential for New Green urban development. The aim is to redistribute the centralized concentration of the activities using the Nedelina street as an Active Axis, turning the focus to public space and creating new dominants for the City. Design intervention integrates with the Structure of City open spaces, creating a New rhythm for Urban life along the street. Because of the different landscape character of the road, the urban spaces can be understood as a sequence of serial accents, rhythmic cells with a periodic regularity, which determine the motion.( 2015 - ongoing )

The project of landscaping and architectural mitigation of C.O.V.A. (Centro Olio Val d’Agri) is born from the awareness that the implant can give a new form to the context from the physical, social, economical and cultural aspect. The intervention has been developed through a complex design defined by different functional fields, each with a clear identity but part of the same unitary system. The result is a range of different realities which create a new cultural and productive landscape.

COVA - CENTRO OLIO VAL D’AGRI, ITALY

The Artistic Mile of Raymundo Sesma is an artistic work that re-qualifies the borders along 1800 meters. The project is able to redefine the surroundings from the aesthetic and functional aspect. The green design has the role of mediator between the architecture and the surrounding landscape upgrading the perception of the context and enhancing the biodiversity and wildlife acting with site-specific species. Moreover, it improves the scenic effect of the architecture, adding a new sensorial sphere to the visual one: the sense of smell.

Environment and identity: “Green infrastructure” and the environmental system

Landscape architecture can play a key role in urban developments, in fact an integrated approach to land management and careful strategic spatial planning can address large urban transformations in order to achieve a green infrastructure. These principles are applied in Tor di Valle. The private development is the occasion for the enhancement of a public hub and for a new synergy between the now fragmented landscapes of the river Tiber and the “agro romano”. Stadio della Roma Tor di Valle is an ambitious development that aims to turn an issue into a potential: this is a unique chance for enhancing this whole urban district while significantly enhancing the environmental and landscaping value of a site currently lacking identity.
