The Friends of the Bozeman Public Library sup-ports the Library, its services and programs by advocating for financial support, raising funds to supplement Library resources, and build-ing volunteer involvement. The Friends raise money by hosting three used book sales per year, the sale of used books at the Lindley Perk Coffee Shop, and through donations and memberships. There are over 300 members of The Friends of the Boze-man Public Library.

The Friends funded over $31,000 for Bozeman Library needs this year, including MOST WANTED, a new book collection. This collection provides more copies of popular and bestselling books for immediate checkout to walk-in patrons. John Gallagher, who served the Friends as board member and President, left after 13 years to become a Library trustee.

The Library Foundation’s mission is to increase and enhance the quality of services, programs, and community events offered, while advocating for private and public support of the Library. The Foundation planned and funded 135 programs for the Library and the community in 2012, including Children’s Festival of the Book, Exploring the Arts, Day on the Green, art receptions, Creative Workshops, Christmas Stroll and many others.

• The Library replaced the hail-damaged roof in 2012. The new roof has a 20-year warranty and is less likely to be damaged by hail than the former metal roofing material.

• Friday hours were extended to 6pm.• Patrons can access an online interactive

map of all 112 pieces of donated art found in the Library.

• The Library Foundation sponsored a production of “8” —a play by Academy award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black chronicling the landmark civil rights trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger.

• Library staff met for a day of training and development on October 8. Ris Higgins led the staff through several discussions including taking responsibility for communications and planning for growth in areas such as staffing, technology, and services.

• A new chamber music series began on the first Monday of the month. “Noon Notes at the Library” offers a refreshing and interactive look at chamber music.

• Author David Quammen accepted the Cornerstone Award in 2013 from the Library Foundation, and over 200 people attended the Cornerstone Celebration in April.

• Planning for the Library’s future began with a Community Visioning Workshop on March 28th with consultants Peter Pearson and Sue Hall and more than 60 volunteers from Bozeman’s business, education, University and neighborhood communities.

• The Foundation sponsored a unique event at the Ellen Theatre with Ted Turner and author Todd Wilkinson featuring the 2013 One Book-One Bozeman title Last Stand: Ted Turner’s Quest to Save a Troubled Planet.

• Concluded a three-year Broadband Technolo-gies Opportunity Project which provided 28 desktop computers, 12 laptop computers, a document scanner, ADA compliant software, hardware, furniture, and a variety of e-readers and staff/public training.

• Kids got to “Dream Big” during the 2012 summer reading program. School-age kids practiced climbing exercises, stage combat, making rockets, ballet dancing, watercolor painting, and playing electric guitar during our “Imagine Yourself” weekly programs.

• More than 1,130 reading logs were filled out by children reading over the summer of 2012.

• Cinema Circus West provided an evening of circus activities and award-winning film shorts for kids and families in September.

• Children’s staff presented a “Fun with Letters” workshop in September and “Fun with Math and Science” in April as part of the national Every Child Ready to Read effort.

• The fifth annual Children’s Festival of the Book featured award-winning authors and illustrators Paul O. Zelinsky, Jeanne DuPrau, and Edward Hemingway.

• 64 reading logs were submitted for the adult summer reading program, “Between the Covers” in August.

• We held a Banned Book Sculpture Opening Reception and Banned Book Reading in October. Former Library Trustee George Cole collaborated with local artists Collin Letts and Sara Williams to design a sculpture using actual banned and challenged books.

• I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou was selected as the 2012 One Book-One Bozeman to coordinate with MSU Convocation speaker Condoleeza Rice.

• Bozeman Public Library and MSU’s Renne Library established a courier service in December to provide material sharing between the two libraries. In January, Bozeman Public Library joined the statewide courier service to expedite materials sharing with other libraries throughout Montana.

• The Library celebrated the writing and sending of letters with a letter-writing pavilion within the Library and a workshop on the history and importance of letters by Lorca Smetana.

• An evening of wit, social satire, and romance was held in January with readings from the works of Jane Austen.

• Money Smart Week, a series of programs on financial literacy, was provided to interested community members in April.

• Amateur photographers Marsha Goetting and Gary Peterson presented a wildflower slide show and photography workshop in May.

• Gallatin County 4-H Robotics Teens provided a “Books and Robots” series which brought together reading, robotics and LEGOs for kids ages 6-10.

• Jason Matthews from Yellowstone Dog Sled Adventures visited the Library in March to celebrate the Iditarod with his sled dogs and sleds.

• The Library participated in the second annual “Parade of Preschools” in April for parents of children under five, sponsored by the Early Childhood Community Council.

• The 2013 summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading” kicked off in June, as well as the teen program, “Beneath the Surface.”
