New facility gives Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha room to grow
The idea for a new community center that would include modern sports facilities had been floating around the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha ever since the organization merged with the Christian Youth Council (CYC) in 2001.
Over the years, board members and former mayor John Antaramian moved this idea from concept to reality and the long-awaited result is an impressive, 80,000-square-foot facility at 52nd Street and 14th Av-enue in Kenosha. The largest free-standing Boys & Girls Club building in the Midwest opened in June.
“We now have the only full-sized indoor soccer field at a Boys & Girls Club, a huge fieldhouse where multiple games can be played simultaneously, and a youth center featuring a computer lab, an arts and crafts room and a game room,” said Ron Stevens, associate director of marketing and resource develop-ment at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha.
Teen center provides variety“We also have a large teen center
including the Joe & Kathy Madri-grano Performing Arts Stage where members can sing and dance and put on performances, a track that senior citizens can use for their morning walks, meeting and multi-purpose rooms, and a full-service kitchen. The city donated $5 mil-lion to the program and we raised another $5 million, including two $1 million donations from Natalie
and Dennis Troha and from Joseph and Shirley Madrigrano. We have approxi-mately $2 million more to raise before we’ll be debt free.”
Parents, kids and teenagers are responding favorably to the new facility. Kenosha’s largest provider of youth sports, recreational, cultural and educa-tional opportunities had more than 5,000 local children as club members in 2010. Since the new facility opened, the number is already approach-ing 6,000.
“As the new building picks up steam, we anticipate getting to more than 10,000 members,” predicted Stevens, who served on the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors for 12 years – including a term as President – and also served as CYC Director for 10 years. “About half of our members are participants in sports programs.”
Those sports programs include football, basketball and baseball, softball and tee-ball. Football and fall baseball and softball are in prog-ress, while basketball registration is also ongoing. In addition, the club hosts a variety of camps and clin-
ics throughout the year, including a lacrosse camp, a Cal Ripken Jr. Baseball camp, multi-sports camps and a host of others.
“Our youth center, for kids 6 to 12 years of age, is part of a national Boys & Girls Club movement to establish learning centers where kids can be mentored and do their homework,” Stevens said. “After they put one hour into that, then they can play. The teen center on the second floor is for kids ages 13-18 and is similar in structure to the first floor.
“The Boys & Girls Club’s mis-sion, both nationally and locally, is

to make opportunities available to kids regardless of their ability to pay. We bring together kids from all walks of life, and give equal access to those who come from economi-cally, socially, educationally and physically disadvantaged environ-ments.”
There are numerous volunteer opportunities at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, including coach-ing sports teams.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Keno-
sha would not exist if it weren’t for volunteers,” Stevens said. “We have hundreds of them, from coaches to mentors to those working our special events. All of our Board of Directors members are volunteers as well.”
Businesses and individuals can also get involved as sponsors of the organization.
“We have any number of spon-sorship opportunities,” Stevens said. “There’s our capital campaign, which involves the new building, with gift-naming opportunities. There’s always a huge involvement from the local business community, which sponsors sports teams and events.”
In addition to conducting activi-ties in its facility, the Boys & Girls Club rents the gyms, athletic field and multi-purpose spaces to outside groups for sports games and tourna-
ments, plus parties and other events. Rental information is available at http://www.bgckenosha.org/im-ages/pdf/rental_brochure.pdf.
