Remember how you felt the day you shot your best round of golf, reeled in that big fish, scored the winning TD or rolled that 230 game? What about the powerful emotions that course through your body when your child drives in the winning run? How much pride wells up when you turn to other fans and tell them that your niece, nephew or grandchild just scored their first goal?
at the age of 5, willie mays was playing catch with his father.
Those are lifetime memories, and memories are best when shared with others. That’s what Kenosha Sports Network (KSN) is all about…capturing those feelings, sparking those emotions and sharing that exhilaration with family members, friends and neighbors.
Joe montana started playing organized youth football at the age of 8.
Now, KSN is expanding its reach. On your screen is the first edition of a groundbreaking publication that will forever change the face of community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play is the exclusive digital magazine for community sports in the Kenosha area.
venus and serena williams began playing tennis at the age of 5.
This free e-mag will deliver timely community sports news, important announcements, essential events, comprehensive standings, player profiles, photos and much more to your computer or mobile device every week.
wayne gretzky began skating on his backyard ice rink at the age of 3.
Producing this revolutionary publication is Kenosha-based Community Sports Desk, a sports software and service company. Like you, we understand the deep emotions associated with dramatic moments on the fields, courts and rinks, and we want to help you preserve them. CSD has one main goal in mind with this e-mag: to bring together a group of people who are passionate about playing, coaching, watching and sharing information about community sports.
danica patrick began driving go-karts competitively at the age of 10.
OK, so what’s up with the “subliminal” messages in italics? The point is that great athletes can trace their love for sports, their involvement in community sports, and their sports connections with family members to an early age.
Of course, not every kid who starts playing sports early will grow up to be a superstar. But the 40 million-plus American kids who participate in youth sports – plus the 25-year-old beach volleyball player, the 45-year-old horseshoe pitcher and the 65-year-old bocce player – all have an opportunity to create memories for themselves and their families that will last forever.
You are already excited about community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play gives you a new platform on which to share that enthusiasm with an entire community. We provide the vehicle…all you have to do is drive it!

Lakeland Little League as strong as ever after 5 years
Lakeland Little League recently completed its 57th season. Kerry Burnett has been involved for 43 of those years, first as a batboy, then a player, an assistant coach at age 13, a manager and a board member, including president of the organization. He can’t recall a more successful season than the 2011 campaign.
“We’ve won a number of state championships through the years, especially in softball, but I don’t ever remember having so many of our teams do so well all in the same season,” said Burnett, whose father, George, has also been involved in the league for decades and who was a groundskeeper for the softball fields this past season. “It’s
probably the best year we’ve had in a long time, if not forever.”
Burnett, who served as the orga-nization’s information director and managed the AAA Giants in 2011, said that it was truly a team effort.
“Many different factors contrib-uted to our success this season, from talented players to strong coaches to dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic fans,” he said. “Travel baseball takes some of our players, but our numbers are still good after so many years.”
Program begins at age 5
The long-running Lakeland Little League program starts at age 5 for t-ball, baseball and softball. Base-ball has instructional ball for ages 5-6, Minors AA for 6-8, Minors AAA for 8-10, Majors for 10-12, Juniors for 13-14, Seniors for 15-16 and
Big League for 17-18. Softball has instructional ball for ages 5-8, Mi-nors for 8-10, Majors for 10-12 and Juniors for 13-14.
Approximately 650 kids partici-pated in Lakeland Little League in 2011, making up 41 baseball teams and 13 softball squads.
“We teach the fundamentals from the younger ages on up,” said Burnett, who launched the organi-zation’s Minor league program in the late 1980s. “My philosophy is about having fun and developing players. It’s not about winning at all costs.”
Still, winning came often for Lakeland Little League teams this past season:
• The Junior girls All-Stars won the District 6 championship and the state title before winning two of four games in the double-elimina-tion regional tournament in Akron, Ohio.
• The 10-11-year-old boys captured the District 6 and state crowns.
• The 9-10-year-old girls won the District 6 title and placed second at state.
• The 9-10-year-old boys also won the District 6 crown and were run-ners-up at state.
• The Majors girls All-Stars earned the District 6 championship.
• The 8-9-year-old boys garnered the District 6 tourney title.

Lakeland Little League as strong as ever after 5 years
Lakeland Little League launched in 1955 in Twin Lakes, then moved to Silver Lake the following year. Four teams – the White Sox, Yankees, Cubs and Braves – made up the league in those early years, while the Pirates and Dodgers were added in 1959. In the 1960s, the Angels and Orioles were added to bring the league to eight teams, and the Brewers and Phillies came on board in 1973. The Minor leagues were instituted in the late 1980s.
Variety of fields used
A number of different baseball fields have been used by the league through the decades, including the Silver Lake diamond at Riverview School. Current diamonds include Burnett Family Field, Butch Faber Field, Mike Wagner Field and Jack Petges Field.
In 1970, Lakeland Little League started tournament play in the Little League Tournament in West Allis. The league earned its first District 6 championship in 1971.
Lakeland Little League softball for girls started in 1975 with a Major division (ages 9-12) and a Senior division (13-15).
The majors girls All-stars display their district 6 title banner.
