Wisconsin Juniors netting great results . . . . . . . . 4-5Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball is entering its 13th season. Starting with kindergarten kids, the organization trains volleyball players all the way up to age 18. A number of the organization’s teams have competed at the national level. More than 80 coaches are involved with the 500-plus play-ers. The club’s tryouts for the 2011-12 season will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12-13. Extraordinary achievements . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18-20 There were plenty of outstanding performances by local athletes over the past week, a number of which are chronicled in this edition of KSN @Play. Ben Loyd of the United FC U9 team scored a dozen goals in three games, Miles Rodriquez of Santarelli OMS smacked an inside-the-park grand slam and Addie Kramer of the UW-Parkside women’s volleyball team recorded her 1,000th career kill. Teaming up for success. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22-23 Four local teams excelled this past week and made it to the Top Teams section of this edition of KSN @Play. The United FC U9 boys Red soccer team and the Tremper girls varsity tennis squad captured the Racine Lighthouse Tournament and the Southeast Conference championship, respectively. The Christian Life School fifth-sixth grade volleyball team and the United FC U8 boys Black squad also performed well.

Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball sets well with community
Many people entrenched in the Kenosha sports community are aware of the success stories of the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club. The group, based out of the RecPlex and now in its 13th year, has had teams compete at the national level and venues throughout the country. A good chunk of its players have gone on to play collegiately, and two from that prestigious pool have earned a paycheck on the court, playing pro-fessionally overseas.
An ath-letic orga-nization of this stature has college coaches check-ing out its players on a regular basis. A number of high school coaches, including five-time state champion Charlie Berg (Westosha Central), coach with the Wisconsin Juniors. Even the local college coach, UW-Parkside head coach Christine Paciero, is in the fold. All totaled, some 80-plus well-qualified, paid coaches share their skills with the Wisconsin Juniors, not parent volunteers.
But, don’t let the level of play of
its top teams fool you into thinking this is a win at all costs organiza-tion. Sure, the Wisconsin Juniors has a corpulent trophy case; however, that is not necessarily the niche they are known for among those in its group.
“Whenever you have top teams, you can be viewed as elitist,” explained Matt Nehls, director of
growth and development for the Wisconsin Juniors. “We are not about just top athletes. Every athlete going through our program will have been trained by at least 10 coaches. We are for every athlete interested in volleyball and strive to be an organi-zation that develops all athletes.”
Nehls’ comments are evidenced by the Wisconsin Juniors’ emphasis on the younger levels. The organization backs its commitment through the
VolleyKidz program, which is for boys and girls in grades K-4. Third and fourth grade “introductory” leagues are also offered, giving kids exposure to the sport and allowing them the opportunity to see if they like it.
Wisconsin Juniors has affiliate clubs in Antioch and Libertyville, Ill., along with satellite clubs in the Lake Geneva/Elkhorn area and
in Racine. Last year, 310 athletes were involved in the club program in Pleasant Prairie – 580 combining all the satellite affiliates. Currently, the fall program is housing 230, all under age 14.
Club tryouts will take place Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 12-13, a weekend which excites all involved.
“We have cuts if we exhaust our coaching staff, but everyone gets an opportunity,” stated Jim Neave,
Wisconsin Juniors players range from kindergarten to age 18.
As interest in volleyball spikes, organization is producing nationally-ranked teams

Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball sets well with communityAs interest in volleyball spikes, organization is producing nationally-ranked teams
executive director of the Wisconsin Juniors. “We put equal effort into everybody, from our elite teams to the lower levels.”
It’s a fact that college coaches are not as in tune with the high school vol-leyball scene as they are with other sports. Instead, they re-cruit via the club route. There are two reasons for this. One is that the high school season coincides with the college season; therefore, college coaching staffs do not have an opportunity to get out and see prep matches. The other is a college coach can see a large sampling of top-notch players at an elite club tour-nament, compared to scout-ing just one, or maybe two, at a given high school event.
With any non-profit club come costs. Fundraising efforts defray the costs for families to enroll their chil-dren. An annual golf outing, a cookie dough fundraiser and raffle-type tickets all help to knock down the necessary expenses.
“We work hard to have a good relationship with the community and all of the coaches in the area at the middle school and parochial level,” said Neave. “We will go out to games in the area and generally be involved in the community. That’s important to us.”
