getting in on the ground floor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5With nails popping up through the floor and dead spots causing problems, it was time for a new gym floor at St. Mary’s Elementary School. A variety of fundraising efforts made the project possible, and now the kids at the Kenosha school have a bright, shiny new gymnasium floor on which to play a variety of indoor sports.
Noteworthy performances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .18There is no “I” in “team,” but there are plenty of individuals who make teams what they are. Twelve Kenosha-area community sports athletes made the Top Performers list this week, including Anthony Rivera of the U12 ACE Kenosha Wizards soccer team and Tristan Jass of the CYC Broncos football squad.
high school soccer in high gear . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29-31Gerardo Rodriguez scored a pair of goals and assisted on another as the host Bradford varsity boys soccer team blanked Nicolet High School 4-0 Sept. 3 at Ameche Field in Kenosha. St. Joseph Catholic Academy and Christian Life School also tangled with opponents recently.

Disposable income is a precious commodity in these challenging eco-nomic times. Charities are strapped. Many services and businesses have disappeared. Even though people may want to donate to a worthy cause, often times it just doesn’t fit into their tight budgets.
The current financial climate makes the story of the shining new gym floor at St. Mary’s Elemen-tary School in Kenosha even more astounding. It took seven years, but the Athletic Association team, led by president John Lesnak, got the job done and a new wooden floor has been installed, just in time for the fall semester.
Key players include past president Tom Corradini and the association’s longest standing member, Pete Walter. The group raised more than $50,000 for gym renovations proj-ects, which include the gym floor.
“We are very proud of the fact that it didn’t cost the parish a dime,” revealed Lesnak. “We received funding from all parts of the com-munity. It just makes you feel good that something like this can come together.”
According to church records, the original floor was laid in 1954, when the new church was built. The floor was wooden, which not all grade schools had at the time. The floor saw plenty of activity, but like any product purchased in a store, or home fixture which receives high usage, wear and tear began to take its toll.
“During the last eight or nine years, we knew we had to do something about the floor,” admitted Lesnak.
Refinishing efforts stretched the life of the floor a little longer, but it was obvious that it was time for an overhaul. Nails began popping up, which not only altered play but was a potential danger to partici-pants. The west end of the floor had numerous dead spots. Basketball players would dribble and some-times the ball just would not come up properly. Unlike the old Boston Garden where funds were readily available to put in new hardwood, this was a Catholic grade school in a largely middle class community.
The fundraising efforts began in earnest, with the annual Packer-Bear fundraiser spearheading the effort. Televisions were placed throughout
the facility and tickets were sold for community members to come in and watch the game between two bitter border rivals on the grid-iron. Businesses and community members donated prizes for raffles, plus there were silent auction items which fetched a nice profit at the event.
“The money we raised from the Packer-Bear fundraiser goes right into the gym,” said Lesnak.
Concessions from other events in the facility added to the fund-raising total as well. In short, the Athletic Association created multiple streams of revenue, even though some were modest.
On June 9, the happy day arrived. The day after school ended, Jason Thomas Flooring Company began tearing out the original floor. The

company has created the floor for NCAA Final Fours, and locally in-stalled the existing floor at Carthage College.
“We felt very comfortable with them,” said Lesnak of the flooring company. “On August 1, the floor could be walked on. New carpeting on the stage and at the entrance is a part of the renovation, too.”
Adult basketball and volleyball groups, the school teams at the newly named All Saints Catholic School, and other civic events will do their thing on the new wooden floor.
“I personally would like to thank all of the volunteers,” said Lesnak. “Without their unselfish volunteer-ism, there is absolutely no way we could have accomplished what we have accomplished. Things like this happen at the high school and col-lege level, but it’s very rare when a fundraising effort like this happens
at the grade school level.”
Local businesses which contrib-uted to the effort are recognized on the gym walls.
The Athletic Association cel-ebrated by having 300 replica gym floors crafted. They are 3 inches by 6 inches. Roughly 250 people own one
of these commemorative keepsakes.
“I still have about 50 left,” said Lesnak. “We are asking only $10 for them, so I hope to have these go quickly.”
If interested in a replica gym floor, contact Lesnak at 262-942-8482.
Work on the new gym floor took nearly two months.
