Head of SchoolCornerDear GJS Families:

David J. Hornby

With sincere regards and best wishes,

Head of School

2

Our school year is in full swing and we are pleased with all operations to date. There are any number of wonderful moments at GJS daily. A few highlights for this month’s ‘Kontak’ newsletter are: recent professional development workshops held at GJS, Idhul Adha and Idhul Fitri Celebrations, Primary field trips and a feature on the Secondary subject Film Studies.

Over the past months, we have researched and sought advice to help improve the quality of internet and WiFi on campus. There are a number of questions which we are addressing, including: Why is our WiFi or internet unreliable?

Why are we challenged to repair the problems of internet speed or consistency? Who is responsible?

How can we all help our current situation?

Perhaps the community of Global Jaya have additional inquiries and ideas to help our IT team.

We wish to report on developments to improve the overall efficiency of internet on campus.

Our IT and Leadership team are optimistic that the following can assist in improving WiFi:

1. We are increasing the bandwidth package.

2. We are looking at a back-up internet provider.

3. We are trialing ‘block’ devices to stop the use of Bolt, or other WiFi portable devices. Why?Because they are interfering with our current systems.

4. We have plans to upgrade our cabling on campus to Fibre Optics.

5. We are introducing a ‘Trial Internet Expectations Policy’ – which can be found on Managebac.

One final topic. The Mid-Semester Conferences are approaching. We ask parents to be patient in the process of signing up. The dates are in place, beginning Thursday, 13th October (8.00 to 4.00pm) and Friday from (8.00 to 11.30am). If you are experiencing issues with sign up please contact the secretaries: Primary, Ibu Imas ([email protected]) and Secondary, Ibu Tanti ([email protected]).

We hope the month of September has brought some degree of routine to your child’s studies; we encourage parents to contact their child’s teachers through Managebac to clarify and answer any questions about academics or extracurricular activities.

For those traveling during the Term break (15th to 23rd October), we wish you safe travels. May your break be restful and enjoyable!

On Thursday 8th September, as part of the annual events associated with Islamic Religion at Global Jaya, we held an Idul Fitri and Idul Adha Celebration. This year, the event was attended by the whole school community and was the result of a

collaborative effort between Primary and Secondary Muslim students. The theme of the celebration was respect, love and peace. We had various performances from songs and role plays to poems. We hope that through these performances, the Global Jaya School Community will have a better understanding of why and how Moslems celebrate Idul Fitri and Idul Adha. We believe that such understanding leads to a harmonious and peaceful community where its members respect each other. Following the celebrations, on Monday 12th September, the important Idul Adha tradition of sacrificing animals (goats and cows) took place. As one of the many social contributions facilitated by Global Jaya, the school arranged for donated animals and distributed the meat to the surrounding community. This was a beneficial and meaningful event which strengthens our social and spiritual values.

Professional Development with David Hodgson

On September 9th and 10th, GJS teachers and parents participated in various workshops led by Mr. David Hodgson, an education researcher, writer and neuro-linguistic programmer

who works with schools and universities in the UK and around the world.

Having experienced a full day with David last year, Principals and SSS were unanimously in favor of bringing him to the school. He’s fun, informative and provides practical techniques that teachers can use in the classroom. Those of us lucky enough to attend were not disappointed.

David’s workshops on personality helped teachers and parents better understand their own learning preferences and those of their students. His workshops on motivation and behavior provided numerous tips and tricks to raise students’ curiosity and mood.

Research shows that regardless of the mood we are in, we are fully capable of changing it in 20 seconds or less!

Feedback from teachers has been exceptional . Here are some of their comments:

I was inspired to think of methods I could use that will not only enable positive teacher-student interaction... but also to implement methods that support student-student (intra-personal) recognition of strengths.

I collected many ideas from today's workshops, particularly the first (a.m.) session. These are some I plan to try with my students and also in Tutor Group.

Postive mood and recognizing personality preference will enhance students communication ability also augment their self-management.

How might these workshops benefit your teaching?

Follow up training regarding the themeI found the session informative but puzzling how to implement in the classroom.

Maybe GJS can hold the same session for students, for introducing the inventory of preferences? So teachers don't have to spend time on this anymore and can focus on implementation of it in connecting with the students.

NOTE: The post-workshop questions posed by teachers helps GJS Leadership better understand the challenges of implementation and find ways to support it in meaningful and practical ways.

IB Asia Pacific once again held their annual Regional Workshops in Indonesia and for the third consecutive year, Global Jaya had the privilege of being the host of this prestigious event for PYP and MYP. Over the course of three days (September 9th-11th) there were 12 workshops being

presented, covering a wide range of topics, with 13 workshop leaders, 2 field representatives, 1 IB representative and more than 220 participants. This event was a great opportunity for teachers to exchange best practice, enhance their IB knowledge and understanding under the guidance of experienced workshop leaders and develop their educational network.

We would like to thank the Yayasan for facilitating this opportunity, the Leadership Team for its endless support, all of the GJS GA and admin staff who worked so hard, our IT staff who were on standby throughout the weekend in case any problems with technology, students who performed at the opening, and student ambassadors and staff who helped with registrations and classroom locations. Finally, we would like to thank all of our teachers who supported this event; we certainly appreciated your flexibility.

We are also very happy to say that we received a lot of good feedback about Global Jaya from workshop leaders and teachers who had traveled from different schools throughout the region to participate.

Primary NEWS

During this first UOI about “My Body”, the Kindergarten classes have been engaged in lots of activities. Once a week, we join the two classes together and have rotation-based activities to help deepen the children’s understanding about body parts and their functions. The children also explore through games, songs, body movements, hands-on materials, books, role play and other physical tasks.

In one activity, the children were asked to assemble cut outs of body parts and make them whole again. Then they were asked to explain what they had assembled.

We have been enjoying our learning so far and we look forward to more great times ahead.

As part of our learning experience, the Reception classes visited Taman Lalu Lintas in Cibubur to explore more about the rules on the road last Thursday, 15th September 2016. We had the opportunity to show our knowledge and understanding about the signs on the road and the meaning of the background colours of the signs: blue is for information, yellow is for caution and red tells us to stop or that we cannot do something. The policemen were very good at explaining these things to us. They also invited the students to play a game related to the signs. After the lesson, we had a trip around Taman Lalu Lintas with the cars where we could see some vehicles and of course, the road signs. Learning is always fun at Global Jaya!

Year 1

Year 2 Children always love playing all kinds of games which enable them to move, listen, or even imagine. One of the ways to meet the needs of children is to provide a friendly and safe environment in which they can interact. KIDZANIA is one the places in Jakarta that the Year 2 recently visited for a field trip, being that our first Unit of Inquiry is “How We Organize Ourselves”. The place is designed to suit the children’s needs in learning about “communities” that’s have different roles and responsibilities. Although very realistic and authentic, all of the buildings are set up according to childrens’ standard sizes. Some stations such as firefighter, gas station, police station, theater, tv station, mini mart, etc. are set up on the first floor. While on the second floor, the children were able explore some stations which are related to various factories such as making noodles, chicken nuggets, chocolate, candy, donuts, and pizza. The students received KIDZANIA “money” in return for performing specific “jobs” which they could then spend while visiting other stations. The students showed excitement during this field trip, as well as made a valuable connection between these communities and those of the real world.

Numbers, numbers, everywhere! But what are they for?

The Year 1 students wanted to find out what numbers do, so they went on a number hunt around the school. They used their observation skills to capture numbers in their natural environment (with a little help from an iPad). Back in the classroom they demonstrated their thinking and communication skills when they discussed the function of the numbers found. We discovered that numbers help us to play; to order, to measure, and to organise ourselves.

On Thursday 25th August we did an experiment about friction. We split ourselves into 3 groups. I was in group number 3. First we made a ramp that was made out of infra board. Then, after rolling one car down the ramp we would measure how far it went and how long it took to stop. Then we would repeat it. After we were done testing different surfaces, we added weight to the car with metal washers. After that, we measured how far it went and how long it took to stop.

(Jaime, Year 5B)

On Thursday 2nd September 2016 the students of 5b did an investigation on gravity. We were split up into groups of 3-4. We used 4 objects and measured how fast they would hit the ground. First we compared 2 objects then 2 other objects. We also made a conclusion in the end by writing which objects hit the ground the fastest and why we thought that. We used a stopwatch to measure the time of the objects dropping. We learnt that some objects are slower at falling down not because of their weight but because of air resistance.

Ibu Windy is very fun and helps us prepare for the exhibition. She explains to us the problems and the troubles that the previous year 6 students encountered. After we asked lots of questions, we are starting to get a clear image of what the exhibition will be like. I am honestly scared, but the teachers said that it won’t be that hard if we focus and stay 'self-managed'. I hope that I get teamed up with people who are good at working with me. (Tyrone)

These are my comments about the priority pyramidWhen I was doing my priority pyramid, I was feeling really proud because I am good at most of the skills. My foundation skill is self-management.

I had so much fun doing the priority pyramid that I didn't even realize that I completed it.

I was also creative while I was doing it, so I also put pictures and and colours on it so it looks creative (Suryansh).

In Ibu Windy’s lesson, I have learned how to express my feelings through inquiry questions. These questions will help me for exhibition to always remember the point of the product. We also made a priority pyramid from the ones you need to practice most until the ones you feel comfortable with. This piece of work will help me improve my goals on what skills I should improve on. I also should keep the ones that I am already confident at steady and going. Now I’m continuing to improve my skills that I still need to practice. (Bryan).

Guest Speaker

Ari Trismana –An inspirational film from an inspirational film maker

Film is the fastest growing subject within the IB Diploma Program. It’s good to afford Film students meaningful links with industry professionals through Film-makers visiting the institution and running short, practical workshops or screening film clips and conducting a Q&A session. To enhance the delivery of the FILM curriculum, opportunities are being created for Film students to work closely with industry professionals.

In September, we welcomed film maker Ari Trismana to facilitate a screening and Q&A of his documentary Demi Goreson Kapur. The film tells the story of a teacher who wanted to help others, working in a rural school in Bogor and contributing to the community in spite of his disability. Ari Trismana went on to win awards at two film festivals for his work. He took the prize money that he won back to Bogor and divided it between the people who were in the documentary. Students enjoyed having the chance to hear from Ari Trismana, watch his films and ask questions about his experience in film production.

The World’s Largest Lesson

“In an effort to teach students the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals, schools across the world are taking part in the “World’s Largest Lesson” during the week of 18 September, in a bid to get young people to consider what they can do to help their own communities and communities around the world.” https://blogs.ibo.org/blog/2016/08/18/worlds-largest-lessons

Global Jaya students took part in the ‘World’s Largest Lesson, an opportunity to raise students’ awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and of the challenges that are shaping their futures. A particular focus this year was gender equality.

Yr 12 Film students struggled to list the names of female film makers. They watched a short documentary that highlighted female film makers who have been successful in industry. They went on to discuss an article which looked at the lack of progress in this area.

http://deadline.com/2016/09/dga-diversity-women-and-minorities-lack-of-progress-1201817550/

Yr 11 English students watched a short clip from a film where the central character is a top advertising executive. They considered why it is that so many senior creative roles are filled by men in the advertising industry. Students went on to read an article from the U.K Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/media-network/2016/mar/08/international-womens-day-diversity-advertising-industry-creative

and they discussed how they might take their place as women in industry.

Yr. 12 English students have recently been looking at the poems by Wilfred Owen. As part of the world’ s largest lessons they were presented with an image of a female US Army officer who left her family behind to serve in Iraq. Various questions were raised about whether women soldiers should serve on the front line. The group felt overwhelming that yes, women soldiers should serve on the front line. A link was made back to the poems of Wilfred Owen and students considered responses to the question ‘What would Owen say about warfare in 2016?’

All three groups completed an online survey as part of the World’s Largest Lesson which provided a snapshot of gender equality in Indonesia.

In early September, all our religion teachers met with members of the Leadership Team to discuss how we might better accommodate the needs of the students in religion class and Friday prayer who do not speak Bahasa Indonesia as a first language. We discussed the need for additional materials, guest speakers and better exploitation of multimedia and the Internet.

Present at the meeting were Pak Edi (Secondary Principal), Ibu Tamara (Curriculum Coordinator), Pak Andy (Middle School Principal), Pak Eka, Pak Ilham and Pak Tisno, (Islam), Ibu Margaret (Protestant), Ibu Mariani (Catholic), Pak Gede (Hindu) and Pak Sudir (Buddhist).

Religion Meeting

GJS is very proud to be one of the few schools able to offer teachers for all five of the constitutionally recognized religions in Indonesia and we take our role seriously. Students are expected to attend the regularly scheduled lesson and Friday prayer with their respective religious group. We do have mechanisms in place to accommodate those students who, together with their parents, choose an alternative we don’t offer, but we are pleased that the vast majority continue to participate in our programs on a regular basis.
