Head of SchoolCornerDear GJS Families:

David J. Hornby

With sincere regards and best wishes,

Head of School

2

We began the new academic school year on Monday 15th August. We believe the first few days on campus were smooth, informative and enjoyable for students, parents and staff.

This edition of our school newsletter, known as ‘Kontak’, features an introduction to the new teachers, University visitation schedule to GJS and details of an excursion and photo competition that took place on the North Island of Hokkaido, Japan.

Our Secondary Induction Programme (15th and 16th August) was successful in orienteering new students to their new surroundings, timetables and expectations set by teachers. In addition to this, new Primary students have been welcomed into their new classes and attended induction sessions to assist with their transition. We are optimistic that these induction programmes have been helpful for new students joining GJS. On behalf of the Leadership Team, we would like to thank and praise the Student Support Services Team and student buddies for all of their efforts.

On Friday 19th August, Global Jaya celebrated Indonesia’s Independence Day. The flag raising ceremony, ‘Upacara’ was performed to perfection by our students in the gymnasium and some of our talented teachers sang the National Anthem, Hymne Pahlawan, Indonesia Jaya and Hari Merdeka. In addition, our dedicated teachers in both Primary and Secondary conducted educational and fun traditional games during the day. Our enthusiasm and commitment to celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day coincides with a section of our mission statement which encourages students to be “respectful, moral individuals who take pride in their national heritage".

Hi everyone. My name is Bambang Eko Nugroho. You can call me Eko. I graduated from the Indonesia Institute of Technology in 1999 and majored in Industrial Engineering. Later I received my MBA degree from Hochschule Bremen - Germany. It has been always a passion of mine to teach ever since I had my opportunity in becoming a Professor's assistant when I did my Masters Degree. I have been teaching in Indonesia since 2003. I was the first former high school program principal at Sekolah HighScope Indonesia located in Jl. TB Simatupang. After I left HighScope, I became the training and education manager for a consulting firm dealing mostly with the Indonesian railway industry. Although it was a different industry, my main role was still in the field of human resource development, in this case the personnel of the Indonesian Railway company. Last year I had another chance in taking on the responsibility for the QA position as well as Economics teacher at Sekolah Insan Cendekia Madani, an Islamic boarding school in Serpong. Now, here I am, becoming a part of GJS, a school that has a solid and good reputation, teaching Economics and Business Management.

Pak Chris Economics and Business & Management teacher

Chris is a British national but was actually born in Honduras (but don't expect him to remember anything about it - he was two years old when he left). Chris has a BA in Classics (that's all about the Romans and the ancient Greeks) from Jesus College in Cambridge University (Jesus College has the best food of all the colleges in Cambridge - if you're visiting and you play your cards right I'll take you there). He also has an MA in Philosophy from Kings College, London University (the Philosophy of the Mind was his favourite section) and he qualified as a Chartered Accountant while working at Deloitte (that's where he started getting interested in Economics and Business). This is Chris's second teaching job outside the UK: he has just spent two years teaching in Mumbai (the traffic looks similar). Over the summer Chris sulked about Brexit but he's getting over it. For an extracurricular activity Chris is keen to set up a Fantasy Shares Club, where students can play games like Anti Monopoly or The Really Nasty Banking Game. In his spare time Chris likes to go dancing (he's tried ballroom, Latin American, lindy hop, rock'n'roll) and he's on the look-out for classes in Jakarta (as long as it doesn't take two hours to get there).

I achieved my Bachelor Degree from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) with a major in Language and Literature for Education. I started my teaching career ten years ago as a High School Bahasa Indonesia Teacher and Research Coordinator for two years. After this, for the next two years, I taught a self contained classroom for 2nd grade using the American Common Core Curriculum for Primary in Cirebon. Next, I taught Primary School Bahasa Indonesia in Jakarta for four years using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), in which I designed the Bahasa Indonesia curriculum to meet the needs of the IPC program. I am trained to teach IB Language and Literature for the Diploma Program and have taught Indonesian A: Language and Literature during my last year teaching in Jakarta. I am blessed to be able to join GJS, who trusted me to be Service as Action Coordinator as well as a Bahasa Indonesia Teacher for MYP.

Kindergarten Welcome to Kindergarten 2016-2017! Our students have been engaged in various activities during their first week. They have been exploring their classroom, the Shared Area and the playground. They also started to get to know each other. During the Independence Day celebration, students were involved enthusiastically with games prepared by the teachers. They made Indonesian flags, joined in an Olympic race in the playground, and hunted for flags. It was great fun!

We look forward to a great year ahead.

Reception B students came back and started the 2nd day with a discussion about Indonesia’s Independence Day. Students were enthusiastic when they got to color the flag of Indonesia while listening to various Indonesian patriotic songs in the background.

While in Reception A, students started to learn Math about numbers 1-10. They are using their thinking skill to show the number by using counters.

As we celebrated Indonesia's Independence Day on August 17th, all the students from Reception to Year 6 had a flag ceremony in the gymnasium in the morning. Afterwards, each year level had their own celebration by organizing some competitions or events. Year 2 had some games to play in groups such as transferring marbles from one spoon to another as fast as they could, putting a pen which was tied in the middle of a parachute into a bottle and dancing with a partner with a ball between their foreheads. Not to forget sharing the special meaning of August 17th’s annual celebration of Indonesia's Independence Day.

On Friday, 19th August, the year 3 students joined together to enjoy playing a variety of games from Indonesia and other countries. Everyone had a lot of fun and wore red and white clothes to celebrate Indonesia's Independence Day on the 17th of August. We learned about teamwork in some games and individual strategies in others. Some of the games we played were ultimate frisbee, marble and spoon, pass the sarong, "krupuk" eating and "bakiak".

2nd International High School Students Photo Exchange Festival 2016, Higashikawa, Hokkaido

Japan By Ershad 11E

SECONDARY NEWS

This year is my second time participating at the 2nd high school international photography festival in Higashikawa, Japan and I would

like to share some of my experience. The town of Higashikawa was amazing like last year, where we saw endless views of rice paddies, visiting the highest mountain in Hokkaido and socialized with friendly locals. Participating in this festival also allowed us to experience Japanese cultures, where we stayed in a traditional hotel, sleeping on the floor and experiencing traditional Japanese bath.

Not only to compete in this prestigious festival, but we got a chance to socialize with students coming from 11 different countries, which are USA, Uzbekistan, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and Latvia. Although we only had one week to socialize with other participants, we had a good time with them and did lots of fun activities such as playing games inside the hotel, exploring a local summer festival and of course, competing together during the festival.

I think that the highlight of the trip is when team Indonesia or team Global Jaya (consisting of me, Risa, Wenwen and Pak Alan) won the “student’s and teacher’s choice award”, selected by the rest of the participants of the festival. Other than that, another highlight would be receiving many positive feedbacks from a judge when we presented our pictures in front of all participants and a Japanese judge.

Overall, my second trip to Higashikawa was a blast and it was an honor to receive two awards. I would like to encourage other students from year 9 to year 12 to try participating this unique photography festival, where it is rare to have the chance to visit such small yet beautiful town and also a rare chance to travel fully funded by the festival committee…. By the way, we got to know closely with the mayor of the town and we were given special citizenship of Higashikawa...what a treat.
