Mahmooooo’s Message This week we celebrate the inde-pendence day on the 4th of Ju-ly. Lets all get our patriotic juices flowing. Our club proudly spon-sors the "I Love America" 4th of July parade in our community. Its always been a great community event, with many organizations and individuals volunteering their time, with Kiwanis in the lead. Many of our members along with many members of our com-munity spend countless hours planning for the big day. This planning starts in January with meetings once a month leading up to July when we meet once every week until the day of the parade. We want to thank each and every one of our members for their pat-
riotic service, specially Dave Wallach who once again stepped up to the plate, and vol-unteered to be the Chair the com-mittee, leading us, encouraging us, to stay involved and make the parade a huge success. If you have not been able to lend a help-ing hand so far, please remember we can use you on the day of the parade. Please let us know if you are available to help along the parade route, or at our booth at the park, where we will be selling hot dogs and water. This is a great opportunity for us all to be a part of a great tradition here in Hacien-da Heights, one that will continue for a long time to come, because of your involvement. Also do not forget we are still selling fireworks at our stand in the Wal-Mart park-ing lot. We will do so until the fourth. Our success is dependent on our members involvement, and Katy Young has been sending con-stant reminders, so please re-spond positively to these re-
quests, make some time to help out. We need your help, even if it is a hour or two each day. A huge shout out to Robert Barba, and his lovely wife Debra, who have de-voted countless hours, and have sacrificed their vacation so we can have the fireworks stand. We also thank all our members who have been helping out, but specially to a Tina Banes & husband Keith, and Kathy Young who have been a constant source of support in this endeavor. Come and join us cele-brate not only the birth of this great country of ours, but our efforts in the community, as we do all we can " to improve this world one child and one commu-nity at a time". Can't think of a better way than to start with our own great community of Hacienda Heights, and our neighboring com-munities.
In the mean while, remember to serve, and always serve with a
smile.

El Presidente called the meeting to order at 7:00 AM, and informed the members that Dave Wal-lach was admitted to the hospital last night. We wish Dave a very quick recovery. Let’s all of us keep him in our prayers. Grace Chan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lon Salgren led the patriotic song; “It’s a Grand Ole Flag”. Craig Cerro deliv-ered the invocation. Club members in attendance were Andrew Chou, Kathy Young, Victoria Davidson, Jim Stewart, David Mal-kin, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Maureen Sinclair,
Anna Wu, Izzeldin Osman, and Craig Cerro. It was good to see Andrew, as we have not seen him in a while. Anna Wu intro-duced her bundle of joy, Kyra, our youngest guest; David Malkin introduced our guests Kalene Wong, President Mt. SAC Circle-K, and Bryan Hwang, a mem-ber of Cal Poly Circle-K. Craig Cerro introduced Esmeralda Bracamonti, our guest speaker for the morning. El Presidente requested Maureen Sin-clair to lead us in the wel-come song, but Charlie Huff ever so alert remind-ed El Presidente that he
failed to recognize another guest who had joined us for the morning. El Presi-dente apologized for his “Brain Fart” and personally introduced Vern Moyer from LPI Kiwanis Club. In all honesty Vern is like family to us, and we forget at times that he is also a guest at our meetings. Maureen Sinclair finally led us in our “Welcome Song”, as we made our guests feel at home. El Presidente started the happy/sad dollars, and handed the bell and the gavel to Victoria Davidson to continue the meeting, as he excited the room to
go to LAX. Victoria Da-vidson very efficiently sold the “Split the Pot”, a win-ning ticket was pulled, declaring Izzey Osman as the winner of $120.00 Kiwanis Dollars ($12.00). Yes Izzey won again, con-tinuing his winning streak. Charlie Huff performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. Kathy Young circulated the donation cans. We collected $29.00 for Relay for Life, $31.00 for Children’s Hospital, and $32.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $23.00 was con-tributed by generous members for Happy/Sad

Story by David Malkin The speaker this week was Esmeralda Bracamonti, An-geles National Forest Specials and a friend of our club for many years through our participation in the Water-shed Restoration program in the Angeles National For-est. The Angeles National Forest was established by Execu-tive Order in December 1892. It covers about 700,000 acres and is the backyard playground to the huge metropolitan area of Los Angeles. The Ange-les manages the watersheds within its boundaries to provide valuable water to southern California and to pro-tect surrounding communities from catastrophic floods. The land within the Forest is as diverse in appearance and terrain as it is in the opportunities it provides for enjoyment. Elevations range from 1,200 to 10,064 feet. Much of the Forest is covered with dense chaparral, which changes to pine and fir-covered slopes as you reach the majestic peaks of the higher elevations. The Angeles National Forest offers natural environments, spectacular scenery, developed campgrounds and picnic areas, swimming, fishing, skiing and the solitude of quiet wilderness areas. One hundred and seventy six miles of trails winding throughout the forest accommodate hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers and off-highway vehicle enthusiasts. Many of the facilities and services in the Angeles National Forest are free. Some areas and facilities in the An-geles, as well as in the other national forests of Southern California, require the Adventure Pass or other recre-ation fees to help maintain, manage and improve the amenities that forest visitors enjoy.

Representing Kiwanis Club were President Mahmood Bashir, President Elect Victo-ria Davidson, JIm Stewart, and Susan Jacklin. Wilson High School was well represented as joining us from KIWIN'S were, Co-President Josephine Tjandra, Jade Wong, Jodi Yip, Marsha Lee, and Alex Ayala. Key Club was represented by IP President Firuze Barimani, President Crystal Espinosa, and Dylan Tran. The Kiwanis crew cleaned the east side of Stimpson from the library all the way to the park. We finished our task at around 11:00 am, almost an hour ahead of schedule and headed home feeling satisfied and proud that we did our part to make our community beautiful, and clean.

During that evening the First General Session begins with a blockbuster kick-off event in the main ballroom. Plan to start your Friday by attending the Interfaith Breakfast or The Eliminate Project Walk. Following the morning's Second General Session, you and your fellow members simply choose a TraK program. Speakers rotate throughout each two hour action-packed session. Share in the excitement of the Awards Luncheon that follows and then choose more informative and exciting afternoon TraK sessions. Take a short red trolley ride to the evening's District Dinner in historic Old Town San Diego. Wake-up to the always fabulous Foundation Honors Breakfast or Yoga For Eliminate Class and then join in for some more education and workshops. Get credit for the Interclub Luncheon and be inspired by our Super He-roes of Service. Stroll the exhibit booths and stop by our new coffee lounge throughout the weekend to see and bid on youth artwork to benefit the Eliminate Project or speak with a knowledgeable leader who will serve you up the answer to your most pressing questions. Then -- pick your next TraK session before you join us for the closing session and the Installation Dinner. Stay another night and join us for the Rose Float Breakfast held prior to the District Board Meeting which maybe attended by any Kiwanian. Don't miss out and plan to be there. It will be a District Convention unlike any other you've ever experienced.
