Taking Care of Yourself

so that you can be there to serve oth-

ers (with a smile)!

HAPPY NEW YEAR my fellow Kiwani-

ans! Thank you to each and every one

of you who have agreed to come

along with me on the wild ride we

shall call 2014-2015. I recently

a4ended my employer’s annual

health and wellness fair and read an

inspiring arcle on “Self-Love”, the act

of taking care of ourselves so that we

can be4er care for others. This week

I would like to share that message

with you as we take on new roles and

challenges together and look forward

to starng our 52nd

year as a club and

celebrate the 100th

year of Kiwanis

Internaonal.

Should you “look out for

number one”? Are you part of the

“me” genera)on? Our society sends

out mixed messages about self-love.

Looked at one way, caring for

“number one” and “me” is labeled

“selfish.” Taking care of yourself

seems to fly in the face childhood les-

sons of modesty and humility. But

taking care of yourself and holding

yourself in high esteem can allow you

to give much more freely of yourself to

others.

CARING FOR YOU ~ Self-love

is about you. You take care of yourself

and your body. You get enough rest

and quiet )me to be able to keep

things in perspec)ve. You are able to

be asser)ve and to set limits because

you care about yourself and you don’t

want to disappoint others. You are

secure in yourself

CARING FOR OTHERS ~ Self-

love includes others. When you care

about yourself, you are able to reach

out and share with others. This is turn

builds self-esteem and gives you a

sense of purpose in life.

MAKING LIVES BETTER ~ Self

-love enhances the people around you.

When you value and respect yourself,

you are also able to value and respect

others. People who love themselves

are tolerant of others and don’t feel

the need to dominate or put others

down. People who have a difficult )me

loving themselves, however, usually

find pleasure only being at one end of

the dominance scale or the other.

THE SELF-LOVE ATTRACTION

~ Self-love brings people to you. Every-

one likes to be around people who

care about themselves because people

with high self-esteem are able to care

about others. Far from being selfish,

people who have self-love are able to

make their own lives, and the lives of

others, healthy and sa)sfying.

Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule Opportunity Drawings and the 90/10rule What is the 90/10 rule? California Penal Code secon 320.5, subdivision (b)(4)(A) states that 90 percent of the

gross receipts generated by the sale of raffle )ckets for any given draw are to be used by the eligible organiza)on

for charitable purposes.

The frequently asked quesons (FAQ) page of the Office of the A4orney General goes on to explain that The

90/10 rule applies to 50/50 raffles, in which 50 percent of )cket sale revenue is awarded as the prize and 50 per-

cent of the revenue is retained by the organiza)on conduc)ng the raffle. 50/50 drawings are illegal because 90

percent of the gross )cket-sale revenue is not used for charitable purposes.

Since our club members are good cizens and many of our speakers and guests are law enforcement and civil

servant professionals, the last thing we would want to do is knowingly break the law. At the same me, our

weekly split the pot drawing adds to our fellowship and helps to support our administrave account to connue

to do the good deals we do in our community.

Therefore we are going to “change-up” our weekly drawings for 2014-2015!

• We will be con, nuing to sell opportunity ,ckets at the rate of 4 ,ckets for $3.

• One ,cket will be pulled during our general mee,ngs for the “opportunity” to pull a marble from the can.

Unpicked ,ckets will be discarded weekly.

• The can will contain 11 white and one blue marble.

• The week 1 moneybag will contain 100 Kiwanis Dollars ($10) regardless of how many ,ckets are sold that

week.

• 10% of money raised in weeks 2 un,l the blue marble is pulled will be added to the “money bag” contents.

• If the ,cket holder pulls a while marble, they will win a consola,on prize. The contents of the “money

bag” will move forward to the next general mee,ng.

• If they pull the blue marble, they will win the contents of the “money bag”. The contents of the “money

bag” will return to 100 Kiwanis dollars at the next general mee,ng.

• This means we are guaranteed at least 3 cash winners a year with many more possible throughout the

year while being good, law abiding ci,zens.

Story by David Malkin

Our speaker this week was Seema Sueko,

Associate Arsc Director, of the historic

Pasadena Playhouse. The Pasadena Play-

house has a rich and vibrant history dang

back to 1917 when an inerant acng

troupe by the name of the Gilmor Brown

Players se4led in Pasadena - at the me a

sleepy li4le town of farmers and wealthy

vacaoners. The town fell in love with the

Players and before they had spent ten

years here, locals donated the money to

move the company out of the derelict old

burlesque house they had been renng and into the newly constructed Pasadena Playhouse in 1924,

originally known as the Pasadena Community Playhouse. At the me, The Playhouse was the largest

and most technically advanced venue on this side of the Mississippi. Its community theatre begin-

nings and the tremendous amount of local support led George Bernard Shaw to dub Pasadena “the

Athens of the West,” likening the enterprise to the ancient Fesval Dionysia.

AQer having produced the enre canon of

Shakespeare for the first me in America,

California legislature voted to dedicate the

Playhouse as official State Theatre in 1937.

During this me, the theatre included a Col-

lege of Theatre Arts (known as “The Star Fac-

tory”), which produced such notables as

Gene Hackman, Dusn Hoffman, Raymond

Burr and Sally Struthers. The theatre itself

drew talent from across the country, premi-

ering hundreds of new plays by writers like

Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, Noel

Coward and many more.

Brown, changes in Actors Equity Associaon laws and the opening of drama departments in many

schools and universies across the country, the theatre went bankrupt and closed its doors in 1969.

During this dark period in Playhouse history, The Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates connued

their acvies in honor of the instuon, a handful of them working relessly for several years to

keep the building from the wrecking ball.

Thanks to a monumental partnership between the Pasadena government, local businesses and our

dedicated patrons and philanthropists, the theater reopened its doors in 1985. In recent years, The

Playhouse has become instrumental in launching new works and landmark revivals for the American

Theatre, while displaying a commitment to cultural and theatrical diversity, which is reflected in sea-

sons featuring Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning plays and musicals.

The Theatrical Diversity Project was organized in 2005 to support The Pasadena Playhouse’s vision to

build a legacy of arsc and theatrical diversity.

Embracing diversity at the Pasadena Playhouse goes beyond promong tolerance; it is about explor-

ing and celebrang the human experience shared by people of all colors, genders, ages, ethnicies,

sexual orientaons, learning and physical abilies, and socioeconomic posions. This iniave:

Gives priority to eclecc and dynamic producons featuring a diverse array of arsts, actors, and play-

wrights. Our producons reflect the diverse richness that defines our community, while never for-

geXng that primary goal of theater: to entertain.

Empowers and enriches young people of diverse ethnicies from disenfranchised communies

through free student performances and arts educaon programs; and

Culvates writers, actors, directors and designers of all backgrounds through new play development,

main stage producons and outreach programs.

The Pasadena Playhouse is also commi4ed to providing underserved and underrepresented youth the

opportunity to experience world-class theater. At every main stage performance, they have 30 free

seats earmarked for Title I students, community organizaons serving youth and alternave learning

instuons who might not otherwise have the means to a4end a live performance event.

Workshops, spirit ba4le and Love was spread around during the annual Region 13 Training confer-

ence. It made me extremely happy whenever I saw a member partake in one of the spirit ba4les or

even ask quesons during a workshop, because of that the 2014 RTC quickly became my favorite train-

ing conference. I was able to eat good food that was provided by the food trucks and watch spirit

ba4les at the same me! It was undoubtly one of the funniest and craziest moments. I can't wait unl

On Thursday, September 25 Wilson Key Club held the first meeng of this school

Year. Dave Wallach and Mahmood Bashir joined them for the meeng. The following week the Key

Club had a very successful Club Rush, and they had almost a hundred or more students sign up. They

all came to the meeng where President Crystal Espinosa assisted by her cabinet informed the

a4endees about Key Club, what it stands for, and what to expect when one joins. Also present at the

meeng was their new Faculty Advisor Ms. Jessica Delavigne, a former Key Club member herself. We

presented her with our club's 50 year anniversary pin. At the end of the meeng all in a4endance

were treated to Popsicles, compliments of Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights.

On Wednesday, September 24, Wilson KIWIN'S hosted their first meeng of the year. They had a suc-

cessful Club Rush, and had over 100 students signed up showing interest in joining the club. Co Presi-

dents Lili Labaco and Josephine Tjandra accompanied with their complete cabinet informed all in

a4endance what KIWIN'S is, and what they do. Videos on Fall Rally and DCON were shown to a4ract

new members. From the looks of it, it seems this club

will increase its membership in great numbers this year.

Like any other organizaon the more members they

have the be4er service they can provide to their school

and their community. The KIWIN'S look excited for a

very successful year, and we cant wait to see them in

acon. At the end of the meeng, all in a4endance were

treated to Popsicles. It was a hot aQernoon, and it ap-

peared Popsicles were just what the doctor ordered.

Orange Grove Middle School Builders Club

By Mahmood Bashir

On Thursday September 25, Kathy Young, Mahmood Bashir, and

Dave Wallach a4ended the Builders Club meeng at Orange Grove

Middle School. It was a short, fun, and a very efficient meeng. The

members discussed various fundraising opportunies, and voted on

which cause to support. They also planned acvies for the next cou-

ple of meengs. Its always a delight watching these young kids run

their meeng and we are always impressed by their leadership quali-

es. A good Faculty Advisor is key to a successful club. OGMS Builders

are fortunate to have two of them, Jennifer Strinz LeBrun, and

Samantha Higbee. We presented Samantha Higbee a Cerficate of

Appreciaon, and a Starbucks giQ card for her dedicaon to these

young servant leaders. Ms, Strinz was not present at

the meeng, and we plan on presenng her cerfi-

cate and giQ card in the near future when she is

available.

On Sunday, September 28 we hosted a picnic for

our SLP from Wilson & Los Altos High Schools,

and OGMS. The picnic was hosted at the brand new

Orange Grove Park. This was our last scheduled event

of the year, and we wanted to thank our SLP for all

their hard work, service, and the assistance they pro-

vided with our club events and projects throughout

this year. We had a good a4endance, approximately

40+ students, represenng our KIWIN'S, Key Club's,

and our Builder's came out to have a whole lot of fun,

enjoy some burgers, and spend me with our mem-

bers. Our guest outgoing LTG Robert Davis, was wel-

comed by Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, Victoria Da-

vidson and her be4er half Jay, Robert Barba & his

beauful wife Debra, Susan Jacklin, President (for a

couple more days) Mahmood Bashir, and First Lady

Nancy Bashir. The kids had planned some fun acvies

for themselves, which included water balloon toss,

hula hoops, board games, and many other fun games.

At the beginning of the year we had promised

our SLP that we will host an event for them which

would not require any work on their part, and it will be

for them to just enjoy themselves and have fun. We

are glad we were able to keep our promise. While the

kids were playing and having fun, Master Chefs,

Dave Wallach & Robert Barba cooked the hamburg-

ers, assisted by their assistant chefs (more like their

minions) LTG Robert Davis, Lon Salgren, and Victoria

Davidson. We had a lot of fun taking custom orders for

single plain burgers, veggie burgers, single cheeseburg-

ers, double double without cheese, double double

with double double cheese, you name it we sasfied all

demands. There was plenty of soda and water for eve-

ry ones consumpon, and chips of course. Even

though it was a pleasant aQernoon we depleted our

supply of water, because the kids got thirsty because

of all the running around and playing hard. It was a

fun, and enjoyable aQernoon for all, a perfect way to

end a tremendous year of service, by our members

and our SLP. A huge Thank You to all who parcipated,

and helped out.

Saturday was a very busy day. The Key Club had their Regional Training Conference (RTC) scheduled to

overlap with our monthly Adopt-a-Highway community service project. Based on this I expected a

lower turnout of Key Clubbers for AAH. Boy was I wrong!

Kiwanis members on hand included: Lon Salgren, Nancy & Ted Strinz (honorary), Dave Wallach,

Mahmood Bashir, Tom Rathman (honorary) and Anna Wu.

Glen A Wilson Key Club was represented by Felicia Kuo, Mindy Lu, Cynthia Chan, Parrevu Barimani,

Jonathan Cheng, Edmond Lau, Kairus Castardo, Joshua Ting, Brandon Yi, Jus,n Ramirez, Victor

Chavez, John Bau,sta, Isaac Gonzalez and Dante Gu,errez. Los Altos Key Club was represented by

Valeria Wong, Airi Fukushima, Chris,an Argumedo, Judy Chen, Marleen Geronimo, Alejandro Her-

nandez, Yvonne Lu, Jeffrey Lin, Rose Roldan, Shelsea Garcia, David Perez and Marlene Fierros. Glen

A Wilson KIWIN'S was represented by Noah Basit. Los Altos KIWIN'S was represented by Bryce Olivas

and Victoria Mezack.

We had great weather for AAH with temperature of just 70 and high intermi4ent clouds when we be-

gan. it had only warmed up to 74 degrees by the me we concluded the AAH. A total of 1,436 ciga-

re4e bu4s were collected during our AAH project. Anna Wu drove around and took pictures of the

parcipants for the Kiwaniscope. Nancy Strinz and Tom Rathman manned the base camp for us.

Dave, Mahmood, Ted and I led the groups of our SLP. Kathy was

there in sprit, having provided snacks and wipes for the parci-

pants.

I was surprised to be the first group back to base camp. Normally

my group is the last back. It helped that the flood control channel

(AKA "no man's land") where we normally spend at least twenty

minutes cleaning was open last month and was sll pre4y clean

this month. This saved us normal me we would spend cleaning

trash between the chain link fence and brick wall and reaching

thru the fence to try and gather the trash.

Thank you to everyone that helped out for our monthly AAH com-

munity service project!

PS: During the August AAH Mahmood and his crew discovered

that the large wooden carved sign that our club installed in April

2010 during our Kiwanis One Day was suffering from graffi.

Mahmood and I went early Sunday morning and removed the

sign. It has been returned to the Calico Carver at Kno4's for refur-

bishment and will be re-installed soon.

THETHETHE KIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPEKIWANISCOPE October 1, 2014

By Nicolas Casllo-Davidson

Last Friday, September 26th I went to my second Meals On Wheels fundraising dinner at Pacific Palms. I really like going to

this dinner because there are many great “silent aucon” items to bid on before we even go in to eat. There are sports items,

some of them signed by famous athletes, Kitchen gadgets, books and decoraon, and this year there was even a signed pic-

ture of our president (not my mom) but the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Just like last year, I sat at the table sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights (they also sponsor the Builders Club at

Newton Middle, my school). This year there were nine people from the Kiwanis club or their family members; Mr. and Mrs.

Bashir, Mr. and Mrs. Malkin, Mr. Mach, Mr. Salgren, Ms. Jan, my mom and I. Also Mr. Rudy Chavarria joined our table. Did

you know he established a scholarship foundaon for the students of HLPUSD where he worked for many years and aQer

rering was a school board member unl 2013?

During the dinner, the aucon guys got almost everyone to bid on sports stuff, cases of wine, trips and even a TV. Ms. Jan

went home with a case of wine, Mr. Salgren bought the flat screen TV and Mr. Mach got a giQ card from the “Deal or No

Deal” case game. They even got the audience to “bid” on nothing and just donate to support the program. I donated because

I know that many of the people who receive the meals are lonely. They may not have friends or family around and somemes

the delivery guys may be the only person they talk to in the day. My nana and abuleta both live far away from here, so I hope

there are people there who go have meals with them every once in a while. I like that I can help someone here whose family

may be far away have meals with a friend. I can’t wait unl next year when I can go to my third dinner for Meals on Wheels. I

plan on saving some extra money by then to buy something cool from the aucon.

La Puente Industry Kiwanis Club Annual Installation Dinner

By Mahmood Bashir

On Tuesday, September 23 La Puente Industry Kiwanis Club, hosted their Installaon Dinner

at Casa Blanca Mexican Restaurant. It was a bi4er sweet event, as they celebrated their successes of

last year, reminisced about their glorious history, and talked about closing their club this year. Our club

members, Dave Wallach, Lon Salgren, David Malkin, Anna Wu, President Mahmood Bashir, and First

lady Nancy Bashir were in a4endance to offer support and encouragement. It was a fun evening, full

of good food, great friendships, and a lot of light moments and laughter. We leQ the event with posi-

Story by David Malkin

Foundaon for Disabled Youth (FFDY) held its annual 2014 fundraiser last weekend at Mt. Sac. Mark

Chang, President of FFDY did the opening remarks and introducons. Supporters of the event from

our Kiwanis Club were Ben Su, Lon Salgren, Ray Jan, John Hsu, Richard Lee and Anna Wu, and David

and Teri Malkin. This was in addion to the support that FFDY receives year round from Kiwanis SLP

who volunteer ever weekend to support FFDY’s acvies. FFDY is the second AKTION Club sponsored

by the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights.

FFDY’s event offered lively entertainment with the award winning M-Team. This marks the second

me that M-Team’s full group of 25 elite taekwondo athletes appeared at a special performance for

FFDY’s annual event. There were also appearances by the FFDY’s Angels (clients with disabilies

served by FFDY), dance by Chen-Li & Pei-Lin, and music by the String and Bamboo Orchestra and Music

Youth Group.

Ben Su was instrumental in bringing together FFDY’s community partners and Mt. San Antonio Founda-

on to make this a successful event.

Story by David Malkin

The Execuve Board of the Los Angeles County Fair Associaon, including Ben Su, hosted an Asian

Business Conference and Outreach mixer at the Conference Center at the Los Angeles County Fair

Grounds. Besides Ben Su, other Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club members present included: John

Hsu, David and Teri Malkin, and Anna Wu with her mother and daughter, Kyra.

It was a fun evening of delicious Sushi, presentaons and meeng new friends. At the end of the

evening the Board invited us to come back on Saturday morning for a VIP 90 minute Inside Tour of

the Fair Grounds.

The Saturday morning started with a connental breakfast and a hosted VIP tour via tram. We

learned about the new educaonal center, plans for a Farmers Market and year round use of the fair

grounds. The tour ended with John Hsu buying us an enormous smoked Turkey leg to sasfy our

hunger.

Story by David Malkin

The 24th Anniversary of the Rowland Heights Chinese Associaon was

a4ended by several of our Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club Members:

John Hsu, David and Teri Malkin, Wilson Mach, Gino Kwok, and Ste-

phen Chen (spouse of Grace Chen). Congressman Ed Royce was pre-

sent to recognize the special event.

Founded in 1990, the Rowland Heights Chinese Associaon (RHCA) has

a focus on serving Chinese-Americans in Rowland Heights and pro-

mong the mulcultural heritage of different ethnic backgrounds and maintaining unity in the com-

munity.

RHCA members parcipate in a variety of acvies in Rowland Heights and other areas such as:

Connecng with Rowland Unified School District, schools, and teachers

Assisng newly arrived families

Partnering with Asian Pacific Family Center on Family Educaon Seminars

Encouraging Chinese-Americans to get involved in local community affairs

One of the key organizers of the Rowland Heights Buckboard Day parade since 2010.

As a group they are a role model in the community to lead people, and to unite people, regardless of

their ethnic backgrounds, and to help people create a harmonious community that fosters quality of

educaon, quality of business environment, and quality of life.

The evening included a full prime rib dinner, mulcultural entertainment and the introducons of the

previous President John Hsu and the new President SueAnn Tai and her Board of Directors.

It was a wonderful evening of food, friendship, dancing, entertainment and networking.

2013-2014 Promotion and Installation of 2014-2015 Officers and Board of Directors

Saturday, Sept. 27th, 2014

By Victoria E Davidson-Cas,llo, 2014-2015 President

Last Saturday night, the scene was Italian, the atmosphere was fesve, the food was plenful, and

the fellowship was enchanng as the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights gathered at Portofino’s

Italian Restaurant in La Habra to celebrate the annual promoon and installaon of the club’s

officers and board of directors.

Outgoing president Mahmood Bashir and his 2013-2014 board members and directors gladly ac-

cepted their promoons when presented with the opportunity by Division 35 Lt. Gov Robert Davis

(Glendora), who was accompanied for the fesvies by his lovely wife Beverly. By the me the

promoon had rolled around, Mahmood had already been serenaded by the beaues of the club

with a personalized rendion of “Bu4ercup”.

Anna Wu, incoming 2014-2015 president-elect, was presented with the Kiwanian of the Year

award for 2013-2014. Although Anna had taken a brief leave of absence at mid-year for the birth

of her (and Richard’s) beauful daughter Kyra, the club has been blessed throughout the year with

her cheerful spirit and unfe4ered enthusiasm for Kiwanis and the K-Family. Anna is well-known for

the hard work she puts into the eding and publishing of our weekly Kiwaniscope. She has also

taken on the Eliminate project coordinaon for our club which has included sharing the Eliminate

message with other service organizaons including a presentaon at the Walnut Valley Rotary in

early summer 2014. All this while maintaining her business, learning the new role of motherhood

and staying an acve volunteer in the communies of southern San Gabriel Valley.

The outgoing president cumulated his (long) presentaon of recognion and accolades with a

showing of love and appreciaon for one club members in parcular, his always supporve but

honest bride, Nancy. Mahmood then stepped into his role as the Division 35 Lt Governor-

Designate to install the incoming 2014-2015 club board of directors and their officers. President-

elect Victoria Davidson thanked the a4endees for their support and commi4ed to working hard

with each and every one of those in a4endance to connue the good work and cheerful service of

our club’s rich history.

With that… Hail to Kiwanis…
