SUNDAY PREACHERS THIS TERM

We welcome a number of visitors to preach this term. Professor IanMacFarland, Regius Professor of Divinity, will give the Sermon beforethe University on Sunday 28 May.

Mr Richard Noble (KC 1957) will speak at Matins on Sunday 7 May,basing his address on ideas in his book Writing on the Wall which exploresmany everyday phrases that derive from the Authorized Version of theBible. On Sunday 21 May our preacher will be the Rector of St Andrew’s,Girton, theRevdDrMandyMaxwell. Wewillhear fromDrRuthJackson,Director of Studies in Theology, Religion and the Philosophy of Religionat Corpus Christi College, on Trinity Sunday, 11 June.

In July we will have a sermon from Mr Nicholas Robinson, who is retiringfrom his post of Headmaster of King’s College School and Master overthe Choristers this summer after 19 years of service.

We have two episcopal visitors this term. The Right Revd Tim StephensCBE will conduct the annual confirmation service on Whit-Sunday andthe Bishop of Lincoln, College Visitor, will celebrate at the Founder’sObit on Friday 19 May.

SPECIAL SERVICES

We are joined by the Choir of St John’s College for the annual jointevensong on Thursday 6 July at 6.00 p.m.

There will be a valediction for our leaving choir members at Evensongon Sunday 9 July. The music at the final two evensongs of this academicyear is chosen by the leaving choristers and choral scholars respectively.

SEATING IN CHAPEL

The top stalls are reserved for members of King’s College and their guests.Members of the University are invited to make themselves known to theChapel staff and may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls.

COLLECTIONS AT SERVICES

The College receives no money from public or church funds to supportthe life of the Chapel and Choir and so we ask you to give generouslyto the retiring collections taken after services and recitals. Envelopes areavailable for your gift throughout the Chapel, please use them for yourdonation, completing the Gift Aid details if you are a UK taxpayer.

Twenty percent of all donations received in collections will be given tocharities as determined by the College’s Charitable Donations Committeechaired by the Chaplain. In Lent Term we were able to give £600 to eachof the following charities: Lifecraft, Cambridge Student CommunityAction, Woodcraft Folk, Cambridge and Ely Child Contact Centres,Cambridge Red Balloon Learner Centre, Afrinspire and Jimmy’s NightShelter.

The Dean is always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to makea significant or ongoing donation to support some aspect of the Chapel’sactivity and service.

MUSIC

On Tuesday 25 April we welcome the Choir of the Cathedral of theMadeleine, Salt Lake City, Utah to the Sung Eucharist. The Cathedralwas a generous host during the Choir’s recent tour in the USA. On theSunday following, 30 April, instrumentalists will join the Choir for aliturgical performance of Stravinsky’s Mass (1948). On Friday 12 MayMay we welcome parents and families from the King’s College School toevensong. The Introit is by former chorister and choral scholar, EdmundRex (KC 2007). Compositions by three members of College will receivetheir first performances: undergraduates, Gabriella Morris (Tuesday13 June), and Stephane Crayton (Saturday 17 June) and fellow, RichardCauston (Sunday 18 June). This last is the fifth in the series of six psalm-settings commissioned in memory of the late Michael Boswell (KC 1959).On Thursday 6 July we welcome the Choir of St John’s College for theannual joint evensong.

In the Saturday evening organ recital series, the ensemble Prime Brassreturns for a programme of music for organ and brass on 13 May, andon 10 June the recital will be given by some of the choristers who arelearning the organ.

MONDAY EVENING SERVICES

These are sung by King’s Voices, which celebrates its 20th anniversary thisyear as the College’s mixed voice choir. The service normally follows thefamiliar pattern of Choral Evensong, with the exception that the secondlesson will, this term, be replaced by a reading from the writings of Julianof Norwich.

LENGTH OF SERVICES

Choral Evensong or Sung Eucharist on weekdays normally lasts about 45minutes.

Evening services at the weekend last a little longer – up to 55 minutes.

Sung Eucharist or Requiem on Sunday or on any other occasion whenthere is a full mass setting and sermon (Sunday) or homily (festivals thatfall on weekdays) may last up to an hour and a quarter.

Those who are unable to remain in Chapel for the entire service arerespectfully asked to sit in the Ante-Chapel.

In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship areoffered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharistis celebrated at 12.30 p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening,the 12.30 p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at whichwe hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the greatspiritual writers.

RECORDING

Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video camerasand mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitalsare recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughoutthe year on the King’s College website.

CHORAL SERVICES

Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays andfrom Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’sVoices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

KING’S COLLEGE CHOIR CDS

Choir recordings are available from the King’s College website andfrom the King’s College Visitor Centre during the day. By purchasingthe Choir’s CDs from King’s College, you are directly supporting theactivities of the Chapel and Choir.

BECOMING A CHORISTER

Chorister auditions are held in January and September. However, wewarmly welcome enquiries and the opportunity to meet those who mightbe interested at any time.
