NOTICES

NEW FACES

As ever, there are some people to welcome at the start of the MichaelmasTerm. It is wonderful to be able to welcome new choristers and choralscholars, together with our new junior organ scholar. We note withgratitude the combination of talent, effort and dedication that has broughtthem to this threshold and that of all those people who have helped themget to this point. We note, too, an enhanced role for Ian Griffiths, the Deputy ChapelAdministrator, who will now be largely responsible for the preparationof services. Now that Dr Jeremy Morris has moved to be Master of Trinity Hall wehave a new Dean. Stephen Cherry is not a new face in the Chapel, havingserved here as chaplain from 1989–1994. Since then Stephen has beenrector of All Saints with Holy Trinity, Loughborough (1994–2006) and aResidentiary Canon and Director of Ministry in Durham (2006–2014).Stephen has written four books: Barefoot Disciple – Walking the Wayof Passionate Humility which was the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lentbook in 2011; Healing Agony – Re-imagining Forgiveness; Beyond Busyness– Time Wisdom for Ministry and Barefoot Prayers – A Meditation a dayfor Lent and Easter.

MUSIC

Schubert’s Mass in G is accompanied by strings at the Sung Eucharist onSunday 5 October and Christmas Day. On Tuesday 14 October, GeorgeBenjamin will attend evensong, at which his anthem ’Twas in the year thatKing Uzziah died will be sung, prior to his admittance as an HonoraryFellow. On Saturday 8 November, music by Sir Harrison Birtwistle isfeatured at Evensong. It is hoped that the composer will be present forthe service, and for the two concerts which will be taking place on thatday in the Chapel. These events form part of a short festival, arrangedby Richard Causton, Fellow, marking Birtwistle’s 80th birthday. OnWednesday 12 November, the Choir performs with the Orchestra of theAge of Enlightenment and soloists in a Bach concert which will open thisyear’s ‘Concerts at King’s’ series and also the Cambridge Music Festival. As a prelude to the celebrations next year of the 500th anniversary of thecompletion of the building of the Chapel, a new book will be launched onSunday 16 November. Evensong on that day features, almost exclusively, music written for the College, and/or by Kingsmen.
