Happy New Year!
I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday sea-son. It is amazing how quickly time passes. Now, the doldrums of winter await us!
We hope that you all had the opportunity to see the beautifully decorated foyer. It was truly a labor of love.
You are always welcomed to contact me with questions, concerns, or if you would like to become a member of the PTO. The best way to reach me is via my email at [email protected]. Feel free to also contact my VP Michelle, at [email protected].

Happy New Year to all! What better way to
launch the New Year than by reading a good
book? I recommend Climbing the Stairs by
Padma Venkatraman. Little has been written
for adolescents about India during World War
II. Ms. Venkatraman, who now lives in Rhode
Island, grew up in India. Drawing on her own
mother’s life, Venkatraman takes the reader
into the complex reality of British-occupied
India in 1941. Vidya, the story’s protagonist,
is expected to be content with an arranged
marriage at 15. This is not what she has in
mind. Her driving desire is to further her
education by going to college, something that
is mostly reserved for young men. Although
blessed with a progressive and highly
educated family, fate will intervene to
threaten Vidya’s dream. BMS students, who
read Climbing the Stairs, will identify with
the characters in this book while discovering a
world that is strikingly different than their
own.
Every year BMS students are invited to take
part in the Rhode Island Children’s and Teen
Book Award. Sponsored by Rhode Island
public and school librarians, these awards
give students the chance to recognize the
book they like most. For a list of the
nominees and a short summary of the books,
go to BMS Library homepage and under
“Literature Links,” click on
Rhode Island Children’s Book Award
Rhode Island Teen Book Award
Stop by the library to see how our volunteer
display-meister, Annette Iacono, has showcased
these books. Students can vote for the Teen Book
Award, the Children’s Book Award, or both. All
votes must be cast by February Break. Each ballot
is automatically considered a raffle ticket. Two
names will be drawn and the winners will receive
a gift certificate to Barrington Books. Please
encourage your students to take part in this
statewide effort.
During these unusually difficult economic times, I
want to acknowledge and thank the PTO for its
tremendous support. I recently attended a
workshop given by Kathleen Odean on “The Best
New Young Adult Books.” This has become an
annual event, and I always leave with a long list of
books I cannot wait to add to the BMS collection.
As many of you know, all district funds are
currently frozen because of the questionable status
of promised state funding. Thanks to our PTO, I
will still be able to buy many of the books our
students should have available to them. When I
spoke to other library media specialists at this
workshop, I was once again reminded of how
special this district is because of the tremendous
support we get from our community. This support
will continue to be extremely important in the
foreseeable future.
Thanks to all of you!

Ask Jazzmine
Dear Jazzmine,
I am an 8th grader and I’m feeling sad. My father is in the construction business and my mother just got laid off from work. I needed a pair of boots and I really wanted Uggs like a lot of the other kids in school have. Instead, my mom got me cheap fake Uggs from Tar-get. I don’t want to wear them and I don’t want to hurt my mom’s feelings. What should I do?
Blue bell
Dear Blue Bell:
Hi! Thanks for writing in. It is very impor-tant that you understand. It’s not the clothes that make the girl. It’s the girl who makes the clothes. Don’t despair, be a trend setter and keep your feet nice and warm in your new boots this winter. Sometimes we can’t always get exactly what we want, it’s a part of life. But we must all learn to be grateful for not only what we have but, who we have. So, give your mom a hug. It sounds like you’re a lucky girl.
Happy Holidays to all the BMS students and their families. Please encourage students to write in with any comments or questions. Also, remember to keep your Shaw’s receipts and turn them in to help our school .
Warmest Regards,
Jazzmine Napolitano

Cookies Raise Big Batch of DoughThe cookie dough fundraiser was a great success this year with over $10,500 worth of product sold. Our profit raised is approxi-mately $5,000.00! Thank you to all who pur-chased or sold cookie dough to help raise funds for BMS! The prize winners who raised the most dough are:
Jack Cuzzone at $420.00 - won a $100.00 Best Buy Gift Card
Rachel Periera at $336.00 - won a $60.00 Abercrombie Gift Card
Kyla Lamothe at $266.00 - $40.00 cash prize.
Kudos to these children for all their hard work!!
And a very big THANK YOU to all the moms who helped out on distribution day, including Nancy Neilin, Terry Coffey, and Pauline Groetelaars, and ESPECIALLY Cindy Sul-livan and Wendy Ridgell who spent over 6 hours sorting cookies and moving heavy boxes. Beth Mollica, Cookie Dough Chair

On February 2nd, 2009 the High School Guidance Counselors will be coming to the 8th grade classes to talk about registering for high school courses for next year and to answer questions. On that same night they will be presenting to parents at the High School. The presentation will be in the High School Auditorium at 7:00 PM.

This group of parents shares the experience of having a student with a diagnosis of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) who is enrolled in either Barrington Middle School or High School. Our meetings focus on strategies to parent these teens to promote academic and social success. We share resources and tools that work. If you have a student that fits this description, you are encouraged to join us. Confidentially is a guideline of our group. The group traditionally meets the third Thursday of each month. The meetings dates for 2009 are:

SEAC News - IEP FormsThe next SEAC meeting will take place on Thursday, January 22 at 7:00 PM in the Bar-rington High School Library. Please join us for our first SEAC meeting of the year and for an important presentation:
Questions about New IEP Forms?
Last year, the Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education ap-proved new special education regulations. One of the changes to emerge from the new regu-lations has been the development of new IEP forms: one form for students 3-14 and one form for students 14-21. The effective date for using the new forms was July 1, 2008. Susan Donovan of the Rhode Island Parent Information Network will be our guest for the evening and will explain the nature and impact of the changes to the IEP forms. For infor-mation please contact either, Lori Vastano, 245-6853, [email protected] or Tracey Rizzuto, 247-7553, [email protected].

• All students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades will be screened for scoliosis during PE classes starting mid January. The no-tice in the Kidscope must be returned for the STUDENT NOT TO BE SCREENED in school. PLEASE RETURN TO THE NURSE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
• GRADE 8 PARENTS - Students missing im-munizations have been notified. These were all due in 7th grade. Parents have been sent notices and called if there is important information missing. This information is needed so that your child’s health record is up to date when it is transferred to the high school. Please forward any information to me as soon as possible.
• GRADE 7 PARENTS - There are many students missing proper documentation for 7th grade physicals and immunizations. The seventh grade physical is a requirement from the Department of Health. The immu-nization requirements include a Tdap boost-er, Hepatitis B vaccines (three doses) and
documentation of the chicken pox vaccine or the disease. Notices have been sent home several times. Please forward this informa-tion as soon as possible.
• GRADE 6 PARENTS - Letters concerning the requirements for the 7th grade physical and immunizations are being mailed home. A school health form is included so that your physician can document a physical and com-plete immunization requirement.
It has recently been brought to my attention that there are students on medication at home that is not documented. Any information brought to my attention is confidential, but it is important that if your child is on routine medication (for example allergy, ADHD and seizure medication,Tegretol, Adderall, Concer-ta, Ritalin, Zyrtec etc.) that this information be included on your child’s health record. Your child’s health record is the document I use in an emergency and is maintained so that I can give appropriate medical personnel the infor-mation.
Important Reminder From the Nurse

The Truth About MRSAMyth: MRSA is a new threat.
Truth: Though MRSA was previously known as being an infection found in ill people in hospitals, it is now showing up in the general, healthy population. This is known as community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA).
Myth: People who have staph bacteria, including MRSA, are a threat to everyone.
Truth: Many people have staph bacteria on their skin normally but have no ill effects. While these people, who are said to be colonized, may pass the bacteria to others, simple self-care measures can prevent a MRSA infection as well as spreading to others.
Myth: MRSA is untreatable by antibiotics.
Truth: While resistant to certain antibiotics, most MRSA infections can be treated successfully using alternative antibiotics and/or having the doctor drain and clean the infected area.
Myth: MRSA is a severe threat.
Truth: Although it does happen on occasion, it is still rare for any staph skin infection to become life threatening in a healthy person.
What isMRSA?MRSA is a particular type of “staph” bacteria that can cause a skin infection in an area of injured skin, such as a cut or scrape.
It can be spread by coming into contact with skin or personal
items of anyone who has MRSA on their skin.
Infected skin is often red, swollen, and painful and may
resemble a pimple, boil, or spider bite, which should prompt
a call to the doctor. If diagnosed with a staph infection,
return to the doctor if it becomes worse or is not improving
with antibiotics.

Preventing MRSABecause MRSA can be passed to others, it is important to follow these prevention tips:
Keep personal items personal! Don’t share towels, sports equipment, razors, clothes, etc.
Keep any wound covered and clean until it has fully healed.
Avoid contact with others’ wounds or bandages.
As a general rule, always maintain good hand-washing habits.
If you have any questions regarding MRSA or a potential staph infection, contact your physician.

Happy New Year!
Here’s your January 2009 issue of Kidscope!
