BATAVIA – BrookelynVandeLoo had worried aboutbrain freeze.

But when VandeLoo, 5,of Batavia raised her handin victory, with blue, pinkand yellow melted ice creamsmeared all over her face, itwas through a mixture of painand pleasure that she claimedthe title of the fastest eater ofice cream under age 6 in hercity.

“She’s been in training forthis for the last few weeks,”joked her father, Tim Van-deLoo, a smile creasing hisface. “Maybe even for the pastyear.”

Brookelyn and her youngerbrother, Blake, 2, on Sundaywere among more than threedozen contestants to tackle thetask of eating ice cream from afoil-lined gutter as fast as theycould, during the annual icecream eating contest at Bata-via’s Windmill City Fest.

The contest was part ofthe final events during the

weekendlong festival, held indowntown Batavia on the Riv-erwalk.

Contestants in the icecream contest competedagainst peers in four agegroups: 6 and under, 7 to 10, 11to 17 and 18 years and older.

Most of the 41 contestantscompeted in the two young-est age brackets, each stand-ing in front of the trough-likegutters, their hands placedbehind their backs, attackinga scoop of ice cream with noth-ing more than their mouths.

Their parents, family andfriends gathered around tosnap pictures or record videoof the ice cream eating frenzyand forever capture images oftheir ice cream-smeared fac-es.

VandeLoo has competed in

the event for the previous twoyears. Last year, she placedthird, said her mother, Jenni-fer VandeLoo.

The VandeLoo family hadcome to the festival Satur-day night, but returned Sun-day afternoon specifically toallow their daughter to takeanother crack at the title, Jen-nifer said.

After the competition, thechildren also were likely toparticipate in the annual firehose challenge, she said.

“It’s great,” Jennifer said.“They can eat ice cream asfast as they can, and then theycan get hosed off after.”

The family was just someof the crowd estimated in thehundreds Sunday afternoon.

Roger Breisch, executivedirector of the Batavia Cham-

ber of Commerce, one of thegroups organizing the Wind-mill City Fest, said the eventthis year was a success, with“huge crowds” packing thefestival site Friday, Saturdayand Sunday.

“The weather has beenwonderful,” Breisch said.“The afternoons were hot, butthe nights were cool, and withthe size of the crowds in here

at night, it had to be in thethousands.”

He said he received goodreports from vendors, notingthey had sold “huge amounts”of food and drink during thefestival, and particularlyduring the musical perfor-mances each of the three eve-nings.

“It’s been a really great fes-tival this year,” he said.

“The afternoons were hot, but the nights were cool,

and with the size of the crowds in here at night, it

had to be in the thousands.”

Geneva’s Head Coach RobWicinski talks to his team during a 7-on-7 tournament Saturday at Aurora Central Catholic High School in Aurora.

At 7-on-7, Geneva footballhopes to have it covered

By KEVIN [email protected]

AURORA – Seven-on-seven footballuses a number of scoring and ruleschanges that do not translate to a48-minute game.

Still, there’s one interval Genevacoach Rob Wicinski truly values, and itdoesn’t take him long to strum his beardand point it out.

Quarterbacks are supposed to releasethe ball within four seconds, so when-ever Wicinski saw a Vikings defensiveback or linebacker hold coverage in Sat-urday’s 7-on-7 at Aurora Central Cath-olic, he nodded approvingly and stuckthe data in his visor.

“Our offense can go out and throw, play pitch and catch any time on air,”Wicinski said. “It’s the defense. If youcan find a kid that can cover out here ...he’s going to be able to do it in the gamewhen there’s not quite as much time.”

Closing the gap – on four seconds andon the quarterback in the pocket – startsup front with linemen such as Vikingssenior defensive end Billy Douds.

Although Saturday’s open offensive

format kept Douds from rushing thepasser or brushing up against any op-posing offensive linemen, he saw theday as an opportunity to progress in hisagility and reads.

“It’s about the reps. Kids trying outnew positions, getting reps on bothsides of the ball,” said Douds, a 6-foot-3,215-pounder who also saw time at tightend. “And kids who aren’t maybe get-ting in on other 7-on-7s, this is a chancefor them to get in. And it’s a good chanceto play other teams that we don’t nor-mally see.”

One such team, Freeport, matched upagainst the Vikings as Streamwood, Ge-neva’s Upstate Eight Conference RiverDivision rival, warmed up to face anoth-er team in the early afternoon.

Glancing at the Geneva offense, a Sa-bres player looked at the quarterbackand figured it was sophomore NickDerr, a Florida State baseball recruitwho started after Daniel Santacaterinabroke his clavicle in a Week 3 loss atBatavia last season.

“It has to be,” the player said. “Whoelse is that good of an athlete?”

Had he not been away from the team

on another commitment, Santacateri-na surely would have taken exception. He’ll be back under center as a juniorfollowing a full recovery, with Derr setto start at quarterback for the sopho-more team.

Mike Landi will be among those vy-ing for the varsity backup spot.

“It’s a competition. The competi-tion’s out,” Wicinski said. Nick’s pri-orites are just a little different. If he’sOK, he’s a great athlete and he’ll playvarsity football someday. Just not thisyear right now.”

Counting the host Chargers, 22 teamscommitted to the 7-on-7, including Burl-ington Central and Wheaton Academy.

ACC coach Brian Casey toutedthe versatile mix of schools. FreeportAquin was the smallest on hand, but onthis day shared the ACC campus withschools such as four-time defendingClass 5A champion Montini, WheatonNorth and Geneva.

Casey called that group among the“flag-bearers, if you will, of success,”and later added this about the event:

“We cover the spectrum in terms ofsize and location.”

Sly took in the sights at a pairof football 7-on-7s this week, aWednesday night tilt at St. CharlesEast before a glorious Saturday atAurora Central Catholic.A quick stroll around both

grounds revealed that “Footballin July” is alive and well. Crowdswatched series of unscored – butstill consequential – plays in thename of a sneak peek at pigskin.Well, pigskin without linemen,

anyway.Fall practices are set to start

Aug. 14, with the season to kick off16 days later. Teams already havebeen immersed in football throughsummer camps and other 7-on-7sbut this week, Sly could feel someheightened intensity amid the laidback atmosphere.Sly didn’t spot any officials on

hand, could you?Short of a pep band, the hosting

campuses sported many of thesame sights and sounds we’ll besure to see during fall Friday nightsthat are just around the corner. With fans already in a football

state of mind, you can be sureWeek 1 will arrive even morequickly than anticipated.

Family affair at theWindmill Whirl 5K

By JARED [email protected]

BATAVIA – Many of therunners were well-acquaintedwith their competitors in Sat-urday’s Windmill Whirl 5Krace – not because of previousraces, but because many of therace entrants were related.

Several families ran therace together or the childrenran in the Youth 1-Mile Runheld earlier in the day, whilethe parents competed in the5K event as part of the Wind-mill City Festival.

“Isn’t that so great?” racedirector Rachel Schmitt said.“I feel that happened becausewe hosted the youth mile andthat gave the opportunity foreveryone to come out as a fam-ily and enjoy the event.”

Colin Young, a former Na-perville resident, took tophonors for male runners, completing the 5K course in17:01.76.

Twelve-year-old DaphneKolody, who lives in Bata-via, came in first among fe-male runners with a time of

20:32.21.“I did this race a year ago.

Last year I got 27 minutes, and this year I got 20 min-utes,” Kolody said. “I thinkthe swimming and the soccerthat I have been doing reallyhelped improve my time.”

Awards were given to thetop three overall winners andthe top three runners in vari-ous age divisions.

Four members of the Kel-ly family were among the 112harriers in the 5K race: Paul, his wife, Jessica, and their twosons – Conor, 10, and Liam, 8.

“It was mom’s idea,” Paulsaid. “She was going to bringthem to the race and I wea-seled my way in. We run as ahobby.”

Conor was the first mem-ber of the Batavia family tocross the finish line, earninghim fourth place in the 1-14male category, clocking inat 25:58.77. Paul finished lessthan a second ahead of Liamand earned second place inthe 35-39 male division witha time of 27:26.44. AlthoughJessica was last of the family

to finish, her time of 27:56.54earned first place in the 35-39female category.

The Silbernagels of St.Charles were another familythat competed in the races.

“I just watched my nieceand nephew [in the Youth1-mile]. They both did realwell,” Matt Silbernagel said ashe cheered his brother, Adam,on during the 5K race. “Kevingot second overall and Brookewas fourth in her age group[7-9 females].”

Adam Silbernagel finishedfifth overall and first in the 40-44 male divison.

“It’s a great course, it’sright along the river with agreat view of Batavia,” hesaid. “Hopefully, in a year ortwo we will all run the 5K to-gether.”

Dave Ginsburg (18:41.53)a n d B r a n d o n J o h n s o n(19:06.45) finished second andthird among the male run-ners.

Elizabeth Ott (21:23.03)took second place in the wom-en’s division and ChristinaMarotta (21:41.69) took third.

Woman should ignorehostile comments

Dear Abby: I have led anunusual life. I lived abroadalone in my late teens, spentmy early 20s exploring theWest, and finished my collegedegree a year early whileworking full time. It gave meindependence, experienceand clarity.

My problem is, in dating Ifeel leagues ahead of men whoare my age. I am attracted tomuch older men. My currentboyfriend is 15 years olderthan I am. The age gap isoften a topic of conversationamong my acquaintances,co-workers and some familymembers. My boyfriend hasalso experienced unwantedcomments about dating amuch younger woman.

What are your thoughtson who a person should bedating in her early 20s? Andhow should I deal with thosewho believe I am breakinga social code? – Old Soul InColorado

Dear Old Soul: I can’t giveyou an unbiased opinionbecause when I was in myearly 20s, I dated older men. They liked to talk, I liked tolisten, and I learned a greatdeal about life from them. Ihope the same will be truefor you.

As to how you shoulddeal with people who accuseyou of breaking a socialnorm, unless they have avalid reason for criticizingthe man you’re dating, Ithink you should tune themout.

Dear Abby: I am a 26-year-old woman who is afraid ofmy true feelings. I have beenfriends with a woman whois a lesbian for seven years.I have always been attractedto women – especially her –but I have always dated men.

I have just ended a five-year relationship, and overthe past few months myfriend and I have grown veryclose. I am starting to havefeelings for her sexually.I think about her all thetime. She’s beautiful, smart, inspiring and has an amazingpersonality.

My problem is, I have an8-year-old daughter, and Idon’t know how she wouldhandle it if I were to date awoman instead of a man. I amalso afraid of how my familywould react.

Our attraction isunspoken, but I can see itwhen I look into her eyes.Should I admit my feelings orshould we remain friends? –Afraid Of My True FeelingsIn Ohio

Dear Afraid: I am reluctantto advise you to spend therest of your life living a lie inorder to avoid upsetting yourfamily, because I don’t thinkit would be healthy for you.

Talk to your friend. Onceyou are sure the relationshipwith this woman is serious, mutual and lasting, youcan tell your daughter youare dating. Children areadaptable, and this may beless of a surprise to her thanyou fear. My advice is tolisten to your heart and youwon’t go wrong.

Dear Abby: My husbandand my son get along betterwith me when they’re nottogether. When I am there, they gang up on me andbecome adversarial. I havereached a point where I hateto be around them at the sametime.

I don’t know what to doabout this. When I try to talkto my husband about it, hegets angry and blames me. Idon’t think I can take muchmore. What do you thinkabout this? – Three’s A CrowdIn South Carolina

Dear Three’s A Crowd: Ifpicking on you is part of theirmale bonding, it’s unhealthy.Your husband may do itbecause he has underlyinganger issues he doesn’texpress directly to you. Yourson may participate becausehis father encourages it, buthe should not be allowed totreat you with disrespect.

Before this takes a furthertoll on your marriage, thethree of you should getfamily counseling. If thatdoesn’t help, you may needindividual counseling tohelp you either stand up foryourself or decide whetheryou can continue living thisway.

Use ‘TRADE’ toplay better bridge

BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

In “The Nine Master Keys ofManagement,” Lester R. Bittelwrote: “Good plans shape gooddecisions. That’s why goodplanning helps to make elusivedreams come true.”

When you are the declarer, good plans will often helpto make a clear-cut dream –bringing home the contract– come true. To do that, youdo not need nine keys; five aresufficient: Track your tricks(count losers and winners), Readthe lead, audition the Auction, anticipate possible Dangers, and watch your Entries – or“TRADE.”

Let’s start with track yourtricks and read the lead. Howshould South play in four heartsafter West leads the spade 10around to declarer’s bare ace?

Although South has only12 high-card points, his handis worth a jump rebid. Thistypically promises sevenwinners, which his hand has: onespade, five hearts and one club.

South has four losers: onediamond and three clubs, thoughhe seems to have 10 winners: twospades, seven hearts and oneclub. However, here, if declarerdraws two rounds of trumpsending on the board and discards, say, the diamond nine on thespade king, he goes down. Westruffs, and later South concedesthree clubs.

When the opening lead isa spot card in dummy’s first-bid suit, it will usually be asingleton. Declarer shouldimmediately cash the club aceand play another club (or duckthe first round of clubs).

East does best to win, cashthe diamond ace, and lead aspade. Yes, shifting to a trumpstops an overtrick, but hereSouth might carelessly ruff low, allowing West to overruff andplay a trump.

Use “TRADE” to improveyour play – our theme this week.
