Note taking

Skills 101 Getting all of the information presented in class can

be a challenge, but with good note taking skills it

can be done.

1. Use a spiral notebook or 3-ring binder for your

notes. Always use the same notebook for the

same class, to stay organized. If you get

handouts, add them to your 3-ring binder.

2. Start a new page for each class and each day.

Write the date, the class and the topic of your

notes at the top of the page.

3. Practice active listening. Listen to your teacher

as if you were listening to the lyrics of a new

song by your favorite musician—really try to

“get” the message.

4. Find the main point. You can’t write it all down,

so listen for key vocabulary words, information

that is repeated and anything your instructor

REALLY emphasizes.

5. Don’t worry about writing in complete sentenc-

es. Abbreviate words in a way you’ll under-

stand later, underline important stuff, and

break down large ideas into smaller chunks.

Studies show that people can forget up to 50% of

what they learned within 20 minutes, so spend

some time reviewing your notes right after class

and at the end of the day to help it all sink in for

good. Fill in anything missing, and compare notes

with classmates.

Student activities box

Do you feel like all work and no play makes you a

dull student? Are you looking for a fun way to

connect with other students? The student ser-

vices team would like to remind you to stop by

the front desk and suggest an activity or two you’d

like to see on campus. Board games, Wii or other

console tournaments, movie nights, trivia ses-

sions—the sky is the limit! Be creative and come

up with some fun activities to engage in with oth-

er KCC students and families. Kilian is YOUR

school, so make it what you want!

Chili cook-off winner

Congratulations to chili-cook-off winner Chris Flanagan.

He won the SSC’s chili cook-off in January. Below, Dori

Mushaney awards a prize.

here at Kilian, having food delivered is no problem. However,

please make sure that you are waiting to pick up & pay for your

delivery. The front desk staff cannot leave the desk unattended

to come and find you when your food arrives, and we don’t want

to turn away the delivery driver!

es and laminate pages for you?

LIBRARY CARDS

Students who live in Minnehaha and Lincoln counties can get

free library cards, and those who live outside these areas can still

get a chard, for a small fee. The Augustana and USF libraries are

also open to the public, although any desired materials must be

used while in the library, as they cannot be checked out.

FRONT DESK MESSAGES

The front desk can take messages for students while they are

here, but they cannot leave the desk to find you, nor can they

give out information about a student to any caller. Please make

sure people who might try to reach you at school know this.

Your FERPA release form contains information about this policy,

so ask if you have questions!

one of these books and learn something

Register for

Spring classes

Registration for spring classes is now open. Make

sure to see your advisor today to get signed up for

classes. The sooner you sign up the better, be-

cause you know you’ll get into the class you want.

Getting registered early also helps keep classes

open, so that the class doesn’t get cancelled due

to a lack of interest. Classes begin March 4 and

run through May 17.

Former student news

A round of applause (or maybe one of those

crowd “waves” is due to former Kilian student

Eric Hartzell, whose work as senior goalie with

the Quinnipiac Bobcats hockey team helped

earn him a spot in the Sports Illustrated “Faces

in the Crowd” section in January. As of SI’s pub-

lication, the team is on a 16-game winning

streak, and Hartzell is a nominee for the Hobey

Baker award. The award is given annually to the

NCAA’s best collegiate ice hockey player. Eric

has gone on to achieve his dream since his time

here, and you can too! If you know Eric, con-

gratulate him on his hard work and success!

Alumni outreach

The Office of Development needs your help! With more than

30 years of success as a community college, Kilian has hun-

dreds of alumni who have passed through the various pro-

grams offered by the college. In an effort to connect with

them and help them stay abreast of Kilian news, the office of

development is putting together an outreach list of past stu-

dents. If you have the names and contact information (phone

number, email address, postal address, Facebook address, etc.) of Kilian alumni that you

keep in touch with, please share this information with Wendy McDonnel, Director of De-

velopment. Email her at

[email protected] or give the information to the front desk student.

This outreach effort will help bring past, present and future students together, creating a

stronger college! Even one name is a significant contribution.

Financial Resolutions for 2013

The financial aid office wants to salute everyone on their continued efforts to meet their New Year’s resolutions as we move into the second month of the year. This time of year is wonderful! Everyone has a renewed sense of spirit and desires to do better for themselves and those around them. One of the ways to do this is to be more finan-cially aware. Here are some resolutions you can adopt for your “pocketbook” health as a student: I will live like a college student (keeping luxuries to a minimum) now so that I won’t have to live like a college student later.

I will only borrow what I need to cover college expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books.

I will check www.nslds.ed.gov to verify that the loan amounts reported match my records, keep track of how much I’ve borrowed in student loans, what the estimated monthly payments will be, and how to obtain loan servicer contact information. I will contact my loan holder to discuss possible options if I am having trouble making my loan payments and I will request a different repayment plan if needed. (There are options.)

I will set up auto-payments for my student loans. I will notify my loan holder of any changes to my address, phone number, name, or enrollment status. It is human nature to “get in the way” of our own full potential… we all desire to do and be better. The hope in a new year is an opportune chance to clear that slate. We must set goals, because honestly, people with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It is as simple as that! Good luck keeping your resolutions (goals) in the New Year. Remember, you are doing it to better you! If there is anything we can do to help you along your path, please let us know!
