Edmonton’s Front Yards are in BloomSpring is here, and we want to see your bloomin’ great yards! The Front Yards in Bloom program is all about recognizing neighbours who make an effort to beautify their front yards. Front Yards in Bloom started in 1999, with 150 nominations in its first year. It is now the largest program of its kind in Canada. Last year, we received over 4,221 nominations city-wide. This year, our goal is to receive 5,000 nominations. Nominations can be submitted from May 20 – June 30, 2016.Front Yards can be nominated in one of four categories: • General: Appealing front yards that makes people smile as they pass by! These yards could include a variety of colours, textures, plants, and garden features. Must have at least 25% flowering plants, but can still include pots and containers. • Natural: Yards with native plants that attract local wildlife such as birds, bees, butterflies and other insects. A natural yard is one with 60% native plants (compared to all plants) or more.• Edible: Yards incorporating edible fruits, flowers, and leaves into the landscape design. An edible yard is one with 60% edible plants (compared to all plants) or more.• Public Spaces: Yards with landscaping features and aesthetic appeal in front of a public building (including schools, businesses/offices, multi-unit residences, churches, and community league halls) After the nomination deadline, volunteers deliver a sign and brochure to each nominated yard, and also choose some top yards for recognition. Edmonton Native Plant Group and Sustainable Food Edmonton judge the top Natural and Edible yards, respectively. Results will be announced during the Edmonton in Bloom Awards on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 7-9pm at the Citadel Theater. Everyone is invited to attend the celebration! It’s Easy to Nominate!• Anyone can submit a nomination• Nominations must be for a front yard or a yard visible by everyone. • You can submit nominations via: Online submission form: www.frontyardsinbloom.ca Phone 311 or email [email protected] Yards in Bloom is a partnership between the Edmonton Horticultural Society, the City of Edmonton, and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.Questions? President's MessageSummer is right around the corner, but the pastures have not all been green in 2016. El Nino has not been kind to Northern Alberta. A lack of moisture has led to disaster, the like of which have never been seen before in Alberta. Thank you to all the residents of our community who have, in some way, helped those were faced with these emergency situations. You are the folks who make La Perle a special place to live in.The AGM was held April 17 with special guest City Councillor Andrew Knack. We would like to thank Perry Delbridge and Sam Unger who have stepped up to chair the Rink Committee. Plans are in the works to refurbish the rinks and have them ready for use in the winter. If you would like to join the committee, or if you would simply like to be included in the com-munication, please contact us and we will be sure to keep you updated. After several years of hard work, the Naturescape is finally completed. We would like to thank Melissa Urusky for her dedication to the project and wish her well in her future endeavours. We would like to keep the Naturescape position open if anyone is interested in handling Front Yards in Bloom?Currently, the board has vacancies at the Communications, Events, Social, and Casino Direc-tor positions. We are also looking for a volunteer to keep our sign board updated. Whether you are only able to help at a specific event or if you have more time to give, your help is much appreciated. Our programs cannot operate without your support. If you are able to help us out, please contact us. The Green Shack program will be operating this summer Mondays through Fridays 2:30pm to 6:00pm. The Belmead Green Shack program will be operating 10:00am to 1:30pm begin-ning on July 4, 2016.Good luck to our SIX soccer teams competing this year! Thank you to all the coaches and volunteers who make these seasons happen. We encourage you to make the most of our short summer months. There are many festivals and events in our city. The river valley is also a great place for a leisurely walk or to enjoy a tasty picnic lunch. With the dry climate, please heed the fire ban bylaws. Also, please be courteous of your neighbours and follow our noise bylaws. By having some simple cour-tesy, we can make sure that everyone is able to enjoy the beauty of our own neighbourhood. Please be mindful of crime in our area, if you see a crime in progress please call 911.Have a great summer! See you July 24th for the KDays Classic Car Show – moved to our hall this year! Please see the website for more details at www.kdaysccars. Community League Day is set for September 17.
