AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME…..

Yesterday, we had the privilege and joy of witnessing six of our youth confirm their faith in Jesus Christ: Rachel Bicksler, Colin Ebbers, Kristi Ebbers, Logan Kuntz, Thomas Priewe, and Rachel Irene Roemer. We celebrate and rejoice in their confirming their faith, as we have for the youth before them.

Confirmation is very different from what it used to be for so many of us. Some of you remember 2 hours every Saturday morning for 2 years. Others remember being questioned by elders, Councils and sessions. It was different for me, too.

I didn’t have much in-depth contact with many adults in the church, other than the pastors. I’m not sure I even talked about faith issues with those other adults, as I think of them, now. I’m not sure I ever consciously thought of them as people of faith. They were more just people in the choir and the pew. That was my loss!

In the past few years, a significant part of the confirmand ministry has been the confirmands meeting with members of the congregation to discuss such topics as:

Knowing God’s Acceptance Different Strokes for Different Folks

A Big Heart and A Deep Faith Being Ourselves with God

Why Care About Social Issues The Blessing of Being A Servant

What Good Is Worship? Why Can’t We Be A Church

I Get So Little Out of It! That Doesn’t Need Money?

We’ve structured part of the confirmation class in this way because I believe it’s important for our youth to experience people

in this church as people of faith; .. as people whose faith informs and shapes their lives, from their sense of self-esteem and expression of self before God to their understanding of giving through the generosity of serving and money; .. and more.

Hopefully, our youth get to personally know and experience multiple members of this church as very spiritual people, in their own way; .. people whose faith in God through Jesus Christ is a very important part of their life and their life perspective. So they see other adults as more than just a person who greets them at the door, hands outs bulletins, rings bells, sings poorly or well, always sits at a certain table in fellowship hall, etc., etc.

Hopefully, these members become models and mentors of faith by leading these sessions and sharing their stories, in the wide, wonderful differences of their faith. They talk about their faith in God through Christ and how they see God present and working in their lives, guiding them, inspiring them, loving them.

This leads me to an idea I think could be a wonderful experience for this church - and an even greater gift to this church. My idea comes from how we spent a lot of time, several years ago, gathering many wonderful recipes for a church cookbook. People offered their recipes with gladness, because they knew they had recipes others would enjoy.

Well, I invite, ask, plead and encourage you - every one of you, to share a story of a time you experienced the presence of God, as Father-Creator, Son and/or Holy Spirit, that renewed, deepened or brought you to new faith. Or, maybe you could share a story of a vision you had, or when something mysterious, coincidental or unexplainable happened to you, or experience that deepened your faith and that you knew was of God. Write with specifics. Write anonymously, if you want.

It might feel awkward to write of this. It might feel a little more self-revealing and vulnerable than you prefer to be. But your story may just be the story that brings another person - or one of our children or youth to deeper faith. Your story could make an important difference in someone’s life.

Our combined stories will be a God-given gift to all of us. We will be enriched in our faith and understanding of the variety of ways in which God works in our lives. We will also come to see and experience each other as people of faith – as people of God, in a new way.

Please send us your story (by mail or to [email protected]).

Kevin’s Korner...

Volunteer, Servants & Recruits

For over ten years now I’ve been actively recruiting for my Youth ministry programming at various churches. I’ve written articles, sent home postcards, talked with prospects and on occasion I’ve secured some help. For the most part the response I

get is people expressing their lack of ability, willingness, or knowledge. I always run into people who feel they know how to get more volunteers for my programming but seldom do I get an offer to assist me with recruiting. I usually get the ―why don’t you call someone?‖ As though I don’t.

If you have been asked to help with my Youth ministry it was because I saw you work with kids and you possessed the skills to be a leader. As the Director of Children & Youth its my task to find the right volunteers for our Children & Youth Ministries. I’m constantly looking at parents, grandparents to see how they work with kids.

Recently we started a new season of recruiting for our Middle School Ministry. We have had tremendous success getting the youth to our programming but we lack the appropriate adult leadership necessary to make this program a home run. Currently we have about 35 students at our programming on Thursday afternoons and Kirsten and I alone are leading them. Kirsten and I did have assistance during the fall from Greg Hartman and Melinda Fruth. They loved hanging out with the kids and as school teachers they had a rapore with them that was developed from seeing them at school. It was such a blessing to have them help out.

This winter and spring it has just been Kirsten and I ―leading‖ the kids. It has been a tremendous challenge and we definitely need your help in suggesting new recruits for our ministry. As you know not everyone posses the skills needed to be effective

volunteers for our youth ministry, but I want to find the best fit for many areas of needs. I would love to work with our recruits ahead of time so we can figure out where they would best be used in our ministry.

We need recruit suggestions for: Snack providers (prepare snack, serve snack, cleanup) Small group discussion leaders ( take a group of 5-10 youth and discuss a provided topic) Room monitors ( over see youth lounge, game room, or hallway during planned events) Event Leaders ( themed activity leader, Game leaders, Lock-in organizers) Summer outing coordinator (someone who plans a summer outing for 30 middle schoolers with transportation and food) So what will I do with your suggestions? I will contact these prospects and ask if they would consider helping out. I will invite

them to our June 12th volunteer meeting at 6pm,

all adults are welcome. At the meeting I will discuss volunteer ministry opportunities as well as some of our expectations for volunteers. If you are interested in finding out more about our Summer programming and where you might fit in as a volunteer/servant please call the office and let Kirsten know. Contact Kevin anytime about recruit suggestions at 815-218-0286. I realize we all don’t have time to volunteer but we all know someone who would be a good fit for our ministries. Tell me who you think would make a great volunteer. I’ll see if they are interested.

LAYCARE M INISTRY

You have all read and know the story of the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5000. So, keep that in mind.

Our Laycare Ministry is planning a vegetable garden on our church property. No, it is not for FACC - it is for our members.

Strangely enough, in our LOF Class on Palm Sunday, Sarah challenged the class to do something for our church members out of love. We are doing just that.

We talked to Property Management about the possibility of a garden and the clean up crew prepped the area on April 9

th. I

understand they are getting some fill dirt from Fischer’s and we are pleased about that.

Some people have volunteered to plant, till the soil, keep the weeds down and help reap the harvest and some of us have donated seeds and plants.

We want to do this for our members - so on Sunday mornings we will have a table of our produce in the entry from the parking lot for our members to take home with them.

Now, this is the first year, so we want to see how it all works and if it goes well, maybe, next year we will need a larger garden. That depends on how well this project is received and if we have people to continue with the work. I’m not saying this is an easy task - we are all busy, but if you want somebody to do something, ask a busy person.

I do look forward to this project and the response to help is great. I’m sure there will be times when we are a little disappointed, but that’s the chance we take when we farm.

Perfection is not we are striving for, sharing our love and our time is what we are striving for. After all, nobody is perfect.

Peace and love, Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator of Laycare Ministry

STEWARDSHIP M INISTRY

One day, as you open the mail, you discover a letter from the credit card company which indicates that because you are such a valued customer, your credit limit is being raised to $5,000. The next day, because you were late sending in a payment of $19.25, you receive another letter from the same company. The second letter makes you feel like a terrible person and states rather emphatically that if you don’t pay up immediately, the company will take action against you. What a mixed signal that would be!

God never sends mixed signals. He is always consistently clear in providing direction to us, even when His instruction runs counter to our natural tendencies. This is especially true when it comes to our giving. Remember, giving to the Lord’s work at St. John United Church of Christ is not to help ―poor God‖ pay His bills. Rather, giving is one of God’s ways of growing Christians and of causing us to be more like Christ. That’s why God calls us to resist the natural tendency to hoard and to be stingy. That’s why God calls us to give, not only out of our abundance, but also when our financial resources are limited.

John Templeton, founder of the Templeton group of mutual funds, concluded a speech to the International Association for Financial Planning by confiding that he had been asked by a financial planner at the convention to mention the name of the ―very best opportunity‖ for investing in the world today. Templeton said, ―I told him that the most risk-free investment, the most rewarding investment was ...giving of your income to your church. In my 46 years of experience, I have never known anyone who regretted that investment. I have never known anyone who has made that investment for ten years without being rewarded with both happiness and prosperity.‖

John Templeton was only echoing advice that God had given to Solomon centuries earlier.― ...the one who gives water will get water.‖ As you consider your life and giving, will you be part of God’s eternal plan by giving in a refreshing manner to the St. John United Church of Christ ministry today and in the months ahead? No one ever went broke trying to outgive God.

DREAMING-BRAINSTORMING SESSION

Sunday, June 26, 2011

On Sunday, June 26th, following worship - until

around noon or shortly thereafter, we will have a creative thinking-dreaming-brainstorming session for ways to enhance, expand, support, or create new ministries through the income from the Joe and Helen Janshen Endowment.

This event will benefit St. John Church in, at least, two ways.

First, we have never had the freedom to do such creative thinking and brainstorming as a church; in part, because there has always been the fear of ―where’s the money going to come from?‖ Now we know there will be some funds available for use, which the givers of the gift want us to use, so we have the freedom and opportunity to think creatively and dream.

Second, there is always the danger, with such an income gift, that we could have the monies ―spent in our minds,‖ even before we’ve received them, and with little forethought and direction from the church.

So, sign up on the bulletin board if you plan on being there. Just imagine what we’ll be able to do in the name of Christ through St. John UCC!!!

PICNIC IN THE PARK

JUNE 12TH AT 11 AM

We will be at the Shelter near the restrooms and playground on Flagstaff Hill. Fellowship Committee is providing hotdogs and beverage, please bring a

dish to pass and your own table service. Hugh Knapp will be leading the praise

service.

We meet at 9 a.m. every Wednesday in the Library. We just finished the book ―At The End Of The Day‖ by the Rev. James Moore. What a wonderful

study! We are starting a new book ―All Creation Sings‖ by J. Ellsworth Kalas.

This is what Kalas says about his book…

―There’s an old hymn you may be familiar with that contains these words. ―This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears, all nature sings and round me rings, the music of the spheres.‖ It is still true today that nature sings, but it is increasingly difficult to catch the melody. Almost everywhere we go, nature’s voice is muted by the sound of traffic and assorted electronic devices. Those who go out to walk or jog are likely to wear a device that keeps them in touch with news or music or speech - so that,

B I B LE S T U DY

Page 14: June Tidings 2011

intentionally or not, they have shut out nature’s sound and dulled its influence.

Which brings me to the point of this book. I rejoice greatly in the ―green‖ movement that has made new millions conscience of the wonder of our creation and the blessed necessity of caring for it passionately. This is a magnificent step in the right direction. But I want us not simply to see--and indeed be grateful for--the wonders of nature. I want us to go beyond nature’s exquisite beauty until we learn some of the lessons it would teach us, lessons about both life and God. When nature sings (as it does every moment) its melody draws us to God, if only we listen with

our whole being.” Please join us!

ST. JOHN UCC COUNCIL MINUTES

Meeting called to order at 6:30 pm.

Members present: President Perry Cowan, Mary Arnold, Bill Condie, Bruce Dykstra, Lisa Ebbers, Deb Hartman, Ben Lee, Ulan Price, Joyce Robinson, Pastor Donnley, ex-officio.

Opening Prayer: Pastor Donnley,

Minutes: Approved via email.

Current treasurer’s report: Pastor Donnley clarified some items in the report.

Motion to approve report by Ben, 2nd by Mary. Motion carried.

Helix Youth Ministry--Confirming Building Usage: Kevin Eckert was present to answer questions and address concerns.

Concerns have been expressed recently regarding the activities of the youth in the church building and specifically the sanctuary. Kevin explained there are a large number of children and limited adult

supervision. The Council discussed asking parents/congregation for volunteers and the process of qualifying people who would be in contact with the youth. Kevin is working on forming a plan to organize, and recruit other adults. The youth program needs adults who would be interested, gifted in this area and qualified. A background check would also be required.

With regard to building usage and concerns about entrances being left unlocked: Many groups and individuals are in possession of keys that come and go at all hours. It was decided that the staff secretary will send out memos to them to remind them of the need to keep the building secure when not in use.

Kevin has reviewed and reminded the youth of what is appropriate and respectful behavior on church property. The Council has approved respectful use of the sanctuary by the youth.

Vacation Bible School Kickoff-- Rick and Laura Hall: Rick and Laura Hall (who performed here last September for Rally Day) have been invited to perform again in a Kickoff event Saturday evening for Vacation Bible School which is hosted this year by St. John. This would include all 5 churches participating. The cost is estimated to be less at this event as there would be be no advertising costs involved and traveling expenses would be less as the Halls will be in the area visiting family. Perry made the motion to request from Memorials an amount of $1,000 to fund/partially fund Rick and Laura Hall for the VBS Kickoff event Saturday evening and Sunday morning worship. Ulan 2nd the motion. Discussion followed. Motion carried.

Chapel Hearth and Kitchen Air-conditioning: In response to the letter, so far $7,100 has been contributed (about one-third of total needed!). Keith H. will contact the contractor to get the process started in the kitchen area. The total amount contributed through 5-15-11 will be reported to the Endowment board and a request made to split the balance between Endowment and Building and Grounds for funding.

John Rawleigh, Lisa Schubert with their expertise along with Joyce Robinson, Judy Garkey and Sarah Knapp will meet to discuss possibilities for the Chapel Hearth room.

A 65 inch flat screen TV and audio-visual system installation in the room was discussed. It would be connected to the worship AV system so that anyone who is unable to sit in the sanctuary for the service, funeral/visitation services, Sunday School classes and other events could make use of this. Perry made the motion to purchase a 65 inch TV and AV system including installation not to exceed $4,000, directing Stewardship to pay for it out of Memorials. Bill 2nd. Discussion followed. Motion carried.
