    community committed to

nurturing, sustaining andtouching Jewish lives throughjoyful worship, life long-learning, and repair of theworld in word and deed.

This is the task that we in theTOS community are chargedwith. All of us are part ofthe sacred enterprise ofnurturing, sustaining and touching Jewish life. All ofus have a role and responsibility to contributethrough worship, study and doing acts oftikkun

olam. I pray that each of us will embrace the sacredmission of Temple Ohabei Shalom and faithfullypursue it. And in doing so may we merit theblessing:

Praised are You, Eternal God, Sovereign of theUniverse, the source of good.

A non-Jew once approached the great sage Shammaiand asked him to explain the Torah while standing onone foot. Shammai reacted indignantly. That someonecould ask that the Torah be reduced to a sound bitemust have seemed disgraceful. Shammai pushed theman away and drove him out of his academy.

Then the man went off to ask the same thing of thegreat sage Hillel. Hillel answered, What is hateful to

you, do not do to others. That is the entire Torah. Allthe rest is commentary. Now go and study.

To understand Judaism at its essence, the seeker wasnot looking for a long philosophical tract or anextensive lecture series. He was looking for a concisesummary which would help him decide what to do next. What he was after was a mission statement for Judaism, and Hillel provided one.

I love mission statements. They remind groups of theirpurpose and focus them on achieving it. For Google, its To organize the worlds information. For a policedepartment, its To protect and to serve. For Disney, its To make people happy. For the Humane Society, its To create a humane and sustainable world for allanimals For the March of Dimes, its To improvethe health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

For Judaism, many mission statements have beenoffered. You shall be a kingdom of priests, a holynation. (Exodus 19:6.) Love your neighbor as

yourself. (Leviticus 19:18.) Do justice and lovegoodness and walk modestly with your God. (Micah6:8.) You shall be holy for I, the Eternal, amholy. (Leviticus 19:2.) Each of these, like good missionstatements do, instructs us and inspires us.

I am therefore delighted that last month our Board of

Trustees beautifully articulated the mission of oursynagogue when it adopted the following statement:

Temple Ohabei Shalom--A Vibrant Beacon ofJewish Life

Progressive in attitude yet traditional in practice,Temple Ohabei Shalom is an inclusive Reform Jewish

I was recently asked to join the Union forReform Judaisms Joint Commission on Worship,Music, and Religious Living. After reading thattitle, your first question might be: what can thatpossibly mean!? I have to say that I responded

similarly when asked to join the wait for itURJ JCWMRL. Talk about a catchy acronym! Inany case, I wondered aloud what thiscommission hoped to achievewhat did they really do? I understand thedirect connection of worship and music. But religious living? Why isreligious living thrown in with music and worship? Not to mention that thisis a joint commission, which means that it is made up of rabbis, cantors, educators, URJ professional staff and lay leaders. I feared that the JCWMRLmight not be the most effective way for me to contribute to our broadercommunity and our movement.

I was wrong. It makes perfect sense that religious living ought to be boundup with worship and music, and that Jewish professionals and lay leadersought to be sharing and joining the larger discussion. Many of us participateas Jews specifically at Jewish events. We may attend services on Shabbat orother holidays. We may support Israel, our Synagogue or other Jewishorganizations through tzedakah. But regardless of our participation in theseJewish events, how many of us incorporate Judaism into our everyday lives. Now dont get me wrong. I am not advocating a higher level of observance oreven more frequent attendance at synagogue. What I am suggesting is that weought to do our best to infuse the Jewish elements that are on display duringservices, etc. into our everyday lives, and vice versa. Dont check your secularlife at the door when you enter the Synagogue. How much more meaningfulcould Jewish worship be if it related and spoke to us not as synagogueattendees, but as the unique, complex people that we are.

So how can we do this? I want to share with you just a few of the highlights ofthe recent semi-annual meeting of the JCWMRL:

The economy: much of our meeting revolved around the impact of the

recession. We discussed the reorganization of the URJ and its effects on boththe Reform community at large as well as the individuals whose lives aredirectly affected. We all wore two hats as leaders within the URJ as well asconcerned colleagues and friends. It was an often difficult, but beneficialconversation.

Personal stories: share them. One work group focused on the power ofsharing our personal stories. Both the one sharing the story and the listenercan benefit immensely. In an organized way, perhaps we can arrange a groupfor people wishing to do such storytelling/sharing. Or perhaps we can beginto think of ways of incorporating personal storytelling into our existingparticipation at synagogue: services, classes, meetings, etc.

Kashrut or not: how can our Jewish values and morals inform oureating habits? Rather than consider only observance of traditional kosher laws,we discussed a Reform Jewish dietary program. Issues included: organicconsiderations, the fair treatment of workers and animals, health concerns, local food sources, the impact on the environment, and of course, traditionalJewish elements. Ultimately, we felt that there ought to be a way to eatJewishly without being confined by traditional kashrut.

I urge you to consider these and other ways that our lives in and out of thesynagogue can be made whole. This is just the beginning of the conversation.Have a wonderful summer full of blessings.

The very poignant and moving Yom Hashoahservice created by ItaN. Wiener and Spence Gould, and assisted by Cantor Sheila Cline on

    April 21st,

paid honor and tribute to our 6 million who perished inthe Holocaust. Following the service, the movie Paper Clipscontinued to convey the solemnity of the evening.

On May 6th, the Sisterhood was treated to Sonia Ravech sharing heraward-winning writing with us. One story eloquently depicted hermother becoming a Jew-by-choice, initially being rejected by herOrthodox parents. Sonias young mother grew into the role of anOrthodox Jewish woman, instilling Jewish pride and values in herchildren. Sonia also wrote about growing up in Dorchester in the1940s, and experiencing terrible anti-Semitism. She also describedher wonderful Jewish neighborhood where the Shul and Shabbat werea cherished weekly event. Shopkeepers on Blue Hill Ave knew

everyones name, and your neighbors were your friends.Sonia is an incredibly talented, delightful, hamishawoman, andTikkun Olamhas great meaning in her life. Her picturesque writingmakes one feel as though you are at the scene. Those of us who werefortunate to experience this program will tell you that an evening withSonia Ravech is truly something special. We send her ourheartfelt thanks.

June 14th was supposed to be the concert date with Julie Boris,Cantor & Leah Schloss and David Sparr. This event, however, had tobe postponed, and will take place instead on Sunday, October 25th at3 pm. Mark your calendars now!

meeting site will be announced shortly, as it may not take place atthe synagogue.

Marcia Levine thanks all congregants who participated in oursuccessful and worthwhile Coupon Project. However, Marcia wasinformed by the Food Pantry that this project is no longer necessaryso the coupon project has ended.

The Sisterhood wishes our entire congregation a happy, healthy, restful summer!

Despite an unprecedented recession not experienced since the GreatDepression, our Brotherhood has been able to sponsor and co-sponsor many programs and activities. Together with the Penn Trust

we have provided funding for newMishkan Tefilahprayer books, gifts for the synagogues Bnei Mitzvah, Scholarship funds for the

Ansin Religious School, and donated to the Project For Our Futureto help build the Trust Center for Early Education. We have co-sponsored TOS Mitzvah Day, the Annual Sisterhood Movie Night, the Music and Worship Fund Concert, and the Yom Hashoahservicewith dinner and movie. We have also continued to hold our monthlyspeaker programs/dinner meetings. With the generous support ofpeople like you, we will be able to continue to support theseprograms, activities and events.

We had the honor of sponsoring the first Ben Adler Memorial BloodDrive as well as the Annual TOS Breakfast with the Brotherhood,

honoring Dottie Berman with keynote address by Newton MayorDavid Cohen, who spoke about hate crimes and anti-Semitism. Wealso sponsored the first Ben Adler Memorial Health InitiativeSpeaker Program, featuring Dr. David Dodson of the MassachusettsMedical Society, who spoke on The Y-Chromosome Carry at YourOwn Risk, which took place immediately after our Annual Meeting. These were all successful events, thanks to your financial supportand participation.

In the upcoming fiscal year, 2009-2010, we are going to strive tomake a brighter future with programs in Jewish education, soulfulworship experiences, instructive speaker programs and other worthysynagogue and community events. We will also be sending two

delegates to the Men of Reform Judaism Biennial Convention wherethey can exchange ideas with our fellow Brothers throughout North

America, and bring back suggestions for new and innovativeprogramming, activities and events.

We are in need of people to fund the Men of Reform JudaismsYellow Candle Project, which we were not able to participate in thisyear. We will also be asking you to support the Ben Adler MemorialFund, the Penn Trust, and the Brotherhood General Fund, inaddition to the annual dues. We realize that in this time ofeconomic uncertainty it is difficult to donate funds to charities, nomatter how worthwhile their goals, but then again, with a donation of$18, $36, $72, or any other amount you choose you would be able

to make a difference in the lives of the children of our religiousschool, the quality of our programs, and our ability to assist thesynagogue in providing assistance for their ongoing projects.

We are also in need of brothers who can donate their time and/orexperience in marketing, advertising, public relations, or web designto serve on the membership, publicity, and programmingcommittees, to help grow our Brotherhood and synagogue family.

We also thank all those who continue to bring or mail in theirstamped cash register receipts from The Butcherie.
