Indeed, they were so exceedingly generous of spirit that eventually Moses had to ask them to stop their giving! It has been said that, just as in the days of the desert sanctuary (Mishkan), giving to one’s Temple is like giving to God. In this season of our freedom and greatest joy, so may we regard such giving as a holy act, the performance of which merits a blessing: “Praised are You Who loves, and inspires us to love, Your people Israel.” With best wishes for a happy Passover, “A Gift to the Community is a Gift to God” Not long ago a survey of congregants posed the question, “What do we want for our community and our children?” The answers were remarkable for their consistency and complementary nature. The most frequent responses were (1) to provide for our children a Jewish education, (2) to ensure adequate resources for doing so, and (3) to ensure that their Jewish education be a quality one. That education was the mantra of this group of respondents is no accident. A recent paper by Steven Cohen, a sociologist of American Jewry, identified education as the single most important ingredient in Jewish identity and the single most significant predictor of lifelong involvement in Jewish life. Plainly stated, the more Jewish education, the more lifelong Jewish engagement. And the more Jewish engagement, the brighter the future of living Judaism. In recent years, arguably the single most successful experiment in Jewish education has been Birthright Israel, which to date has brought over 250,000 Jewish young people to Israel. After the Birthright experience nearly all participants report a deepening of Jewish identity and heightened involvement in Jewish life. A case in point is a young adult who, upon returning from such a trip, approached me to explore how she can more fully live her Judaism. A Message From the Cantor

From March 21st to March 25th, 1965, The Reverend Martin Luther King led the third march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In describing the event, Heschel later wrote, "When I marched in Selma, my feet were praying." This famous comment speaks volumes. Clearly this was a spiritual moment for Heschel, one of the greatest Rabbis

and theologians of our time. And yes, we can pray with more than our words (I would say that our feet, arms, voices, hearts and minds all ought to be up to the task!). And we can also share a meaningful moment with people different than ourselves. As much as we as Jews value our Jewish community, we have much to gain by sharing with people of different ethnicities, religions, cultures and traditions. On May 21st, 2010, we have the opportunity to put this concept to work as we invite the Boston Community

Cantor Randall Schloss

Calling all Singers & Musicians! Musicians: Are you a musician? Come share your talent with your community!

TOS Choir: From novices to experienced singers, all are welcome! Rehearsals are usually held on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in the Chapel.

Mahkelah: Mahkelah offers students who love to sing an opportunity to learn and perform both new and traditional music in Hebrew and English. Cantor Randall Schloss leads the choir in weekly rehearsals (Tuesdays from 5:45 - 6:15pm) and a variety of performances at religious services, concerts, choral festivals, school events, nursing homes and more. All students in grades 3-7 are encouraged to join.

If you would like to participate or would like more information, contact Cantor Schloss at [email protected].

Daily Worship Service Seeking New Leaders

Temple Ohabei Shalom offers daily worship services on weekdays at 8:00 am and Sundays (and legal holidays) at 9:00 am. Evening services are also held Sunday - Thursday nights at 6:00 pm. Daily Worship Services are held in the library. Interested in getting involved? There are openings for new leaders. Don’t feel like you’re up to the challenge? Training is available. If you have any interest please contact: Ita N. Wiener at 617-734-7137; or Spencer Gould at 781-329-7439. We look forward to seeing you at services!

Choir to join our choir and community on Shabbat evening. Perhaps this festive “Gospel Shabbat” service won’t carry quite the weight that the Selma March did, but it will share some of the best elements. Brother Dennis Slaughter and his choir have been with us many times in years past, and each time we all benefited from the sharing of our traditions, cultures and music. The evening is always one of the most spiritually charged Shabbat celebrations of the year. The event is loaded with other, equally joyous elements as well: The Gordon family will be beginning the celebration of Emmett’s Bar Mitzvah, and we also will honor a true gem of our community, Spencer Gould. Please join us for dinner at 6:30 and services at 7:30. I look forward to joining all of you in song, dance and spirit from our heads to our toes.

Mazel Tov to our Bar Mitzvah!

Gabriel Rogoff Son of Natasha & Kenneth Rogoff

April 3, 2010 • 19 Nisan 5770 Chol Hamoed Pesach For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteered for a group called Boston Cares for the week during my winter break. It was a four-day volunteer program created for teenagers from the Boston area. During the project, I helped organize and sort books that would be given to children with disabilities. Another day, we went to the Red Cross Food Pantry and sorted boxes of food to later distribute to those in need of food. At Cradles to Crayons, we sorted clothing. And lastly, I visited a retirement home, which was my favorite part where I read several poems to the people living there, including Robert Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”

When I heard I about the Boston Cares program, I jumped at the opportunity because I was fascinated with the person who was running the program. He organizes young people and also writes his own rap music. I liked that he had several passions - like helping to change the world into a better and brighter place and also did the same through his music. At the end of my time there, I felt good about the impact I had made because I had helped a lot of people who are less fortunate then I am. I hope you all will support the program. It’s a great program. I also met a number of other people who were doing pretty interesting things. (www.bostoncares.org)

Ironically, Audrey's pediatrician is the wife of Dr. Zuckerman so there is an added twist to it all!

April 10, 2010 • 26 Nisan 5770 Parshat Shemini For my Mitzvah Project, I am raising money and volunteering at Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm. Challenge Unlimited is a therapeutic riding program, based in Andover, Massachusetts. Therapeutic riding (hippotherapy) is the process of using horseback riding to help disabled participants overcome physical or mental ailments. To raise money, I am holding a series of “Paint Your Own Horse” activity tables around the community. I hope to begin volunteering in the Spring, caring for horses and helping with the riding program. I was inspired to support Challenge Unlimited by a very talented disabled rider at the barn where I ride. For more information, visit www.challengeunlimited.org.

News and Notes

Ohabei Shalom has been chosen to participate in an exciting Me’ah Brookline collaborative with Temple Beth Zion, Temple Sinai and Congreagation Kehillath Israel.

What is Me’ah? Me’ah is an exciting, two-year adult Jewish learning program, sponsored by Hebrew College and Combined Jewish Philanthropies’ Commission on Jewish Continuity and Education. Taught by renowned professors and scholars, Me’ah immerses active Jewish learners in core Jewish texts, providing them with a framework for understanding Jewish culture and civilization across four eras - biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern. Me’ah gives students the opportunity to grow as literate students of Jewish life, and to join a growing community of adult learners.

Sisterhood News

All members of the TOS community are invited to the joint Sisterhood - Brotherhood - Ansin Religious School Yom Hashoah observance planned for Monday evening, April 12. Beginning at 6 PM, Rabbi Franken and Cantor Schloss will lead us in a worship service. This will be followed by dinner (there will be a suggested donation of $7.00 for adults) and an engaging presentation by Dr. Bernice Lerner of Boston University. Dr. Lerner is the author of The Triumph of Wounded Souls, a book about Holocaust survivors and is herself the daughter of survivors. See page 3. Our Sisterhood Shabbat on Saturday, March 6, was an inspiring and uplifting tribute to Betsy Gould with a theme of service so ably planned by Ita N. Wiener. Our Torah and Haftarah chanters were Margie Kahn, Diane Rosen, Spencer Gould and Rhonda Solomon, and other Sisterhood members read a number of moving selections. We thank all of those who participated in the service including Rabbi Franken, Cantor Schloss and Music Director, David Sparr. After a delicious Kiddush lunch, the congregation adjourned to the Main Sanctuary where we dedicated a seat in Betsy's memory. A number of people spoke and shared loving memories of Betsy and her many acts of mitzvah and kindness at TOS where she had been a member since childhood. Betsy's good deeds extended to various individuals as well as to the community at large. If you wish to make a donation to help support our efforts to continue Betsy's mitzvot, please send a check made out to “Sisterhood, TOS” and mark Betsy Gould Mitzvah Fund in the memo. Many thanks to those who have already contributed and thanks also to the TOS staff (David, Britta, Jose, and Jason) for helping to make this day so memorable. A final word of thanks goes to Karen Landman and Ellen Mosner for their work on the Sisterhood Shabbat worship booklet. Sisterhood always welcomes new members and you are invited to attend any of our events as a guest before joining. For information about our active small groups that meet regularly, please contact Amy Hozid (617-566-1939 or [email protected]) about the Book Group and Judy Mabel (617-232-7049 or [email protected]) about the Weight Management Group. Rhonda Solomon is coordinating the Sisterhood Readers for the preschool. If you want to read to the children, please contact Rhonda (617-773-3549 or [email protected]).

Shabbat Torah Study

Twice a month (2nd and 4th Saturdays)

April 10 and 24 9:00 am – 10:15 am

Join us as we read (in English), discuss, debate, and learn together in a warm and welcoming environment. The sessions will be facilitated by Rabbi Franken or by a lay volunteer who has prepared topics for discussion. Torah study is always “come as you are,” and no preparation is required (or expected). Dress comfortably, and perhaps bring a spouse or friend.

We meet in the Berenson Library. Coffee and tea are provided. No experience necessary! All opinions welcome.

A Successful Concert Supporting Literacy and Connecting Communities

Donations Still Needed!

The IntelliJam! benefit concert which took place on March 6 is a wonderful example of how to build connections between communities and support literacy. The goal of the IntelliJam was to raise money to buy books and bookshelves for the Emerson Elementary School in Roxbury which has no library. We are pleased to have worked on this project since its start and to have sponsored the reception after the concert. Our tradition teaches that “one good deed engenders another.” What started as a book drive for the Emerson Elementary School at Mitzvah Day two years ago engendered the Brookline High School (BHS)-Emerson Literacy Partnership and more book drives. The BHS-Emerson Literacy Partnership then created the IntelliJam, and we have yet to see what will emerge next. The IntelliJam! concert featured wonderful and varied music by the Brookline High School Camerata; the IntelliJam! Jazz Ensemble (Bo Winiker, Jamie Saltman, Kenny Kozol, and Don Heald); the Emerson School Cantata Singers. Chorus, and Percussion Ensemble; and world music group Zili Misik. One highlight of the afternoon was the enthusiasm emanating from the Emerson community as they connected with the Brookline community. The wonderful work of the BHS-Emerson Literacy Partnership has helped us all learn how a small event such as a book drive can motivate young people to do more, and by doing more create a partnership promoting communities, children and literacy. It is a genuine example of tikkun olam. The BHS-Emerson Literacy Partnership is still in need of donations to reach their fundraising goal. Please support the incredible effort the group has made thus far and donate to this cause: http://bhsemerson.bhsweblab.net/page/how-to-donate TO DONATE BY CHECK: Make check out to: Dudley St. Neighborhood Initiative (the fiscal sponsor). In the memo line of the check, write: Emerson Literacy Partnership. Mail to: Brookline High School, IntelliJam!, c/o Roger Grande, 115 Greenough Street, Brookline, MA 02445
