100 Blessings a Day Rabbi John Franken

It may not be easy and will certainly present bumps along the way. But the destination, with God’s help and yours, will assuredly be one which Rabbi Yochanan would deem redemptive of the effort.

Join us in Israel this December! We will be departing December 20 for the trip of a lifetime as we immerse ourselves in the history and the destiny of the Jewish people. Additional information on the trip may be found inside Tidings. To assure yourself a place, please register now as we plan to offer any unfilled spots to individuals who are not members of the TOS community.

Welcome Karen Glansberg and Jamie Wildstein! I am delighted to welcome onto our staff team two individuals whose work is already having a profound impact on our synagogue life: Karen Glansberg and Jamie Wildstein. After two decades of successfully directing preschools at sister congregations in California and New Jersey, Karen joins us as founding director of our Trust Center for Early Education. She is enthusiastic, delightful, loving and fun, and I have little doubt that she will quickly establish the TCEE as one of the premier Jewish preschools. Jamie recently graduated from Hamilton College where she majored in Religious Studies. An aspiring rabbi, she will be interning with us for the next year as she seeks to deepen her Jewish learning and gain insights about the rabbinate. Jamie is bright, dedicated, and passionate about Jewish life and learning. I hope you will take a moment to introduce yourself to Jamie and Karen and to extend them a warm TOS welcome.

Thank you Finally, I am deeply grateful to everyone who reached out to comfort me in the time of my bereavement. Though I may not be able to thank everyone personally, please know that I was, and remain, moved and strengthened by your caring and your love. With blessings of shalom from Israel,

Tel Aviv, July 18—Once, as Rabbi Yochanan (John) was walking out of Jerusalem, Rabbi Joshua followed him. Upon seeing the Temple in ruins, he said: “Woe unto us! The place where we made atonement is no more.” To this Rabbi Yochanan replied, “My son, do not grieve for we have another means of atonement. It is deeds of loving-kindness. As it is said, ‘I desire loving-kindness, not sacrifice.” (Hosea 6:6)

In this story we encounter one situation but two viewpoints, each of them authentic. Seeing the center of Jewish worship burned to the ground with no chance of being rebuilt, Rabbi Joshua feels a deep sense of loss and displacement. “What will we do now?!!” he seems to cry out. He seems stricken with grief, unable to imagine a Judaism transcending the one which depended on sacrifice.

Rabbi Yochanan’s response is quite different. In loss he sees opportunity. In grief he puts forth hope and creativity. Yochanan can imagine a Judaism that is even more beautiful, sensitive, caring and kind than the Judaism he had known before. So he set about refashioning what had been a priestly, sacrifice-based tradition into a grassroots one that would place at the center deeds of kindness, repair of the world, lifelong study, and spiritual nourishment. He set himself and his generation on the course of change.

Change, to be sure, is not easy. It can cause a sense of profound loss, as it doubtless did for Rabbi Joshua. It can also elicit resistance, as we see happening every day the Congress is debating health care reform. Yet change can also unleash a creativity that allows us to adapt to a changed reality by constructing something new, meaningful and profoundly important for ourselves and our future.

Just as our country is navigating the waters of change, so also is our congregation. We have begun to reimagine our spiritual life, our vision for Jewish learning, and how we go about the daily business of the congregation. With your help, we shall do the same regarding deeds of loving-kindness and the repair of the world.

All of us must join together as partners in this journey.

Progressive in attitude yet traditional in practice, Temple Ohabei Shalom is an inclusive Reform Jewish community committed to nurturing, sustaining, and touching Jewish lives through joyful worship, life

long-learning, and repair of the world in word and deed.

Going Green “Do not spoil or destroy My world.” (Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:13)

As we look towards Rosh Hashanah and the start of a New Year, Temple Ohabei Shalom is reflecting on ways we can leave the world better than how we found it. We will continue to offer social action opportunities, host Mitzvah Day in November and continue our green initiatives. Over the past two years, we have taken steps to begin a recycling program at TOS. Starting with paper, we have moved to bottles, cans, batteries and cardboard. Through the help of congregational volunteers, we have changed many of our traditional light bulbs with CFL lights, reducing the energy that we use to light the synagogue. An energy audit was conducted over the summer and Britta Weirich, our facilities manager, will be implementing many of the suggestions that came out of the walk through. We have purchased re-usable table clothes to negate the need for buying paper ones. This is wonderful start, but we want to go further. You by now noticed that in our membership commitment letter we asked you to provide an e-mail address (or two or three!), to eliminate the need to mail everything to each member family. Printed materials will still be sent to those without e-mail access, but our hope is that TOS’s primary means of communication will be through e-mail and our website. This will be the last issue of Tidings that will be mailed to every member home. We will always have copies available at TOS and monthly issues will be sent home with students. Not only will this reduce the amount of newsletters we produce, but it will enable us to get information to you in a more timely manner. If you have not already provided e-mail addresses to the synagogue office, please do so by calling 617-277-6610 or e-mailing [email protected]. This is just a start and we look to you, our congregation, for fresh ideas, new ways of reducing our footprint on the world and to volunteer to make these greening initiatives a reality. May this year be one filled with spirituality, warmth, health and a greater awareness of the world around us. L’shalom, Steven Davis, Executive Director Holiday Parking and Security

Community Jamie Wildstein is spending the next twelve months at Ohabei Shalom as a full-time intern as she prepares her application to attend rabbinical school. Jamie is from Montville, New Jersey and relocated to Brookline in June. She is a recent graduate of Hamilton College (Religious Studies major, minors in History and Comparative Literature), where she was president of Hillel. Jamie also studied at Hebrew University and at Oxford, and spent a summer in Washington, DC interning at the National Archives and Records Administration. Jamie is looking forward to working with Rabbi Franken and Cantor Schloss and is excited to become part of the TOS community.

Dear Congregants, I am delighted to have joined the staff and congregation of Temple Ohabei Shalom as the Director of the Diane K. Trust Center for Early Education. After sixteen wonderful years as the Director of the Ganon Gil Early Childhood Center of Tem-ple Adat Shalom in Poway, Califor-nia, and five years as the Director

of the Alef Beit Sefer of Temple Beth-El in Hillsborough, New Jer-sey, I am thrilled to be at Temple Ohabei Shalom at this very excit-ing juncture in its history. To be able to play a role in developing and building a new program along with those who have brought this dream to fruition, and helping shape and nurture the next gen-eration of children, families, and members of Temple Ohabei Sha-lom, is an exciting challenge and privilege. In many ways, my relocation to Brookline is a return home. Born and raised in Newburyport, I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (albeit with an ex-change semester at the University of Hawaii), and my graduate degree from Boston University. Both of my daughters were stu-dents in and graduates of my very first preschool program begin-ning in 1988! Marion also graduated from Tufts University and NYU graduate school and is a teacher of French at Lawrence Acad-emy in Groton, MA. My daughter Anna graduated from George Washington University, and recently returned from a Fulbright Pro-gram year in Uganda and begins her graduate studies in Washing-ton, DC this September. I know first hand the joys and blessings of raising children in a caring and supportive synagogue commu-nity. I have always believed that in young children, we feel our link to the past, experience the present, and lay the foundation for our future. Through a curriculum rich with Jewish values, traditions, teachings, and celebrations, we plant the seeds for our Jewish future. And together, we will nurture and grow this garden and gateway of Temple Ohabei Shalom. I welcome your interest in our new early childhood education cen-ter and hope you will stop by my temporary office in the library so that I can introduce myself in person. I can also be reached at the synagogue at (617) 277- 6610, ext. 24, or at [email protected]. L’shalom, Karen Glansberg LICSW Director of Early Education

Sisterhood News

Auxiliaries

Brotherhood News Jonathan Atkins & Louis Goldman Betsy Gould

Hopefully, everyone is enjoying a happy, restful summer. At this early July writing, we strongly encourage you to get your honey orders in for Rosh Hoshana. Last year many family and friends were delighted with this sweet and thoughtful gift. Don’t forget, this is one modest way for us to raise some funds, so we’d greatly appreciate our congregational support! The order form was in the June Tidings, and re-printed on page 4. Don’t miss the August 22nd deadline. We are so thankful that Zita Samuels will once again lead our meetings. Margie Kahn will continue as our very competent treasurer. Judy Halper is our excellent recording secretary, and Judy Boris our corresponding secretary. Thank you to Ita N. Wiener for taking charge of our SISTERHOOD Shabbat, and to Elaine Cohen who is our WRJ Liaison. Betsy Gould will still be writing these TIDNGS articles and remain our information connection to the synagogue. Amy Hozid is very interested in compiling a new Ohabei Shalom SISTERHOOD cookbook. Please send your recipes, and if you’re able to help Amy with this project, please e –mail her at [email protected] or (617) 566-1939. We have had three successful small group activities this past year: Mahjong, Knitting, and the Book Club. We are excited about the prospect of two more choices. If you are interested in a Weight Management group, or a Jewish Studies group, watch for your membership information, and come to our opening coffee. Sunday, August 2nd at 11:30 a.m., the Book Club will be discussing “Three Cups of Tea”. “This is an inspiring account of one man’s campaign to build schools in the most dangerous, remote and anti-American reaches of Asia. In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed climbing expedition in the Himilayas. People in an impoverished Pakistani village nursed him back to health. He promised to come back and build schools.” This reading is about that promise. August 13th we will be mailing out our membership packets for 2009/2010. SISTERHOOD provides you an opportunity to develop wonderful friendships, while participating in a plethora of interesting, diverse activities. Our SISTERHOOD helps our beloved Ohabei Shalom, as well as the Jewish community at-large. On Monday, September 14th at 7:00 PM, our opening "dessert and coffee" meeting will feature guest speaker Karen Glansberg, the director of TOS’s new early childhood center, scheduled to open in September ’09. We will also be treated to our own Estelle Katz, who will welcome us with song. Catch the spirit! Come join the wonderful women of SISTERHOOD! Sunday, Oct. 25th at 3 p.m. pianist Julie Boris will perform, along with Cantor & Leah Schloss, and David Sparr. More info will come in October’s TIDINGS. This promises to be a wonderfully entertaining afternoon.

At our June 2009 BROTHERHOOD Annual meeting, the following slate of officers were unanimously elected into office for 2009-2010: Co-Presidents: Jonathan Atkins (3rd year) and Louis Goldman (2nd year) Vice President - Membership: Howard Koor Vice President - Programming: Barry Lyons Treasurer: Edward Kahn Secretary: Jerry Kravitz Inspiration Chair: Dr. Hugh Caplan Hospitality Co-Chairs: Craig Greenwald & David Alpert Assistant Chair - Membership: Harvey Solomon The Brotherhood Executive Board includes the above officers and committee chairmen as well as Saul Feldman and Past-President Spencer Gould, who serve in Ex-Officio capacity. Congratulations and best wishes for strength and success to the incoming officers and Board! Both Co-Presidents attended the MRJ annual convention in June, held in New Orleans. This included several workshops, Shabbat services, and an opportunity for Tikkun O’lam. One workshop was presented by Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of Religious Action Center Reform Judaism, which covered looking for ways to increase dialog between Reform Jews and Muslim, Catholic, and other Christian organizations. He also addressed how the tensions in Iran and Palestine affect Israel. Another workshop spoke about how our Brotherhoods and synagogues are sharing the same problems of a decrease in membership, and ways to try to improve this. Please add to your calendar Thursday, October 15th at 6:30 pm, when John Shalett, newly elected North American President of MRJ, will preside over the installation of TOS’ newly elected Brotherhood officers. The Brotherhood extends their thanks to everyone who has remembered to bring in or mail in their stamped Butcherie receipts. Please continue to support this vital program.

Updates Dear Ansin Religious School families, We hope that by now you are aware of the exciting new changes that we have proposed for the coming school year at the Ansin Religious School of Ohabei Shalom (ARS). Based upon your response and feedback, we have decided to pilot many aspects of the new program for the coming school year with

some modifications. We are very thankful to the many families who participated in our Town Meeting last month, and to the several others who responded to our questionnaire letting us know your questions and feedback about the anticipated changes to the ARS. We have listened and appreciate all of your concerns about our new model for Jewish education. Our goal is to sustain our Jewish culture in a way that fosters a powerful connection to the greater Jewish community for our ARS families and students and to meet the diverse needs of our students and families. By implementing our new model in fall 2009, we will target three agendas: reinvigorating our school by aligning it with the traditional cycle of Jewish worship, reacting to our families changing scheduling needs, and responding to the synagogue’s newly adopted balanced budget. Our clergy, staff and lay leadership all agree that our new approach will help to keep our Judaism in motion and nourish the whole Temple Ohabei Shalom community. The details for next year are as follows:

It is of utmost importance to us to work collaboratively with you to bring about this exciting change. We are aware that this may be a difficult transition year for some families. Please call or email me in the school office (617-739-9200, [email protected]) if you would like to discuss any aspect of this new program. We are deeply committed to keeping our school the warm, nurturing, wonderful experience it has always been. The changes in the coming year will move us closer to our vision of being a fountain of living and joyful Judaism. B’shalom, Shari Churwin Education Director

Committee Updates Budget Committee News - July 2009 The TOS Budget Committee, under the leadership of Bob Loeb, has been meeting regularly for several months. The committee’s work resulted in the balanced budget for TOS’s new fiscal year, which began July 1st. The Budget Committee is engaged in an ongoing effort to monitor both revenue and expenses. Some of the choices that were made have resulted in changes to TOS staff, and some will change the way programs are planned and managed. The overall objective is to allow TOS to continue fulfilling its holy mission to our co-congregants in a nurturing and sustaining manner while also being fiscally responsible. Bylaws Committee The Bylaws Task Force continues to progress toward our goal of a fall Congregational Meeting to approve the revision. Currently the task force is incorporating changes that arose since the April 29th Bylaws Town Hall Meeting. Please keep your eye out for a revision of the Bylaws to be made available on our website by the end of the summer. Penn-Spero Renovation Committee Thanks to a generous donation from Shirley Spero, Penn-Spero has underdone an amazing transformation this summer. A committee consisting of Shirley, Shelley Schwartz, Danit Ben-Ari, Cantor Schloss and Britta Weirich researched the best way to use the funds. The result is freshly painted walls, the removal of dated mirrors, replacement drop ceilings on both wings, a new curtain, new fixtures over the hall and facelifts in the bathroom. Next time you visit TOS, make sure to view the room, you will me amazed at the difference. If you are interested in renting out the newly enhanced Penn-Spero Hall, please contact the main office at 617-277-6610 for availability and rates.
