Dear Friends and Visitors,

On Behalf of our Church of the Annunciation, we welcome our friends and neighbors to our Church home and the 2017 Buffalo GreekFest.

A study of the history of ancient Greece reveals a rich heritage that has been handed down through the ages. Much of western art, architecture, literature, science, Olympic sports, phi-losophy, and the democratic form of government is rooted in ancient Greece and serves as a pillar of modern civilization. From 336 – 323 B.C. Alexander the Great created a vast empire from Greece to India in which the Greek language thrived and gave rise to the principals of Hellenism, which included democracy, respect for the individual, human rights and the rule of law. With a wide spread language, the stage was set for proclaiming the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Orthodox Christianity remains virtually unchanged since its beginnings on the day of the Pen-tecost, fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On that day, the Church began with the descent of the Holy Spirit to Christ’s twelve Apostles, filling them with God’s grace, will and ability to carry on His message.

It is in this spirit that we present and share our Orthodox Christian Faith and Hellenic Culture to you during this festival. We hope you enjoy our cuisine, handicrafts, music, dancing, culture and hospitality. We invite you to tour our Church and learn more about our faith. Make fond memories this week, build friendships, and make visiting the Greek Festival one of your family traditions.

We thank you for your support of our festival over the many years, which helps us continue our Orthodox Christian ministry. I would, also, like to thank the countless volunteers who have given of their time and talents to make the Buffalo GreekFest a success.

With Warm Regards,

Rev. Dr. Christos B. Christakis

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Orthodox Christian Church is the Church founded by the Lord Jesus Christ and is the church described in the pages of the New Testament. Her history can be traced in an unbroken line all the way back to Christ and His Twelve Apostles.

Incredible as it seems, for over twenty centuries she has continued in her undiminished and unaltered faith and practice. Today her apostolic doctrine, worship, and structure remain intact. The Orthodox Church maintains that the Church is the living Body of Jesus Christ. One of her saints, Athanasius the Great, describes the faith of the church as, “what Christ taught, the apostles preached, and the fathers kept.”

Many of us are surprised to learn that for the first 1000 years of Christian history there was just one Church. It was in the eleventh century that a disastrous split occurred between Orthodox East and Cath-olic West. Although it had been brewing for years, the so-called “great Schism” of 1054 represented a formal separation between the sister churches. At the core of the controversy were two vitally important areas of disagreement: the role of the papacy, and the manner in which doctrine is to be interpreted.

But What is the Real Difference between Orthodox Christianity and other Christian Denominations?

One writer has described the Orthodox faith in this basic fashion: Orthodoxy has maintained the teachings of the Old and New Testament and the living Tradition of the Church, without addition or subtraction from the time of Christ’s incarnation to these modern times.

The Orthodox Church’s goal throughout the ages has been and is, to maintain the faith in the Trinity Father, Son and Holy Spirit and to convey the message of salvation in Jesus Christ unmodified to the present and future believers. This practice is best summed up with this quote from one of St. Paul’s Epistles, “therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word, or our epistle,” (2 Thessalonians 2:15).

Therefore, the Orthodox Church has steadfastly maintained the Apostolic Faith. She preserved the Apostles’ doctrine of the return of Christ at the end of the age, of the last judgment and eternal life, and continues to encourage her people to grow in Christ through union with Him. As the New Testament teaches, Orthodox Christianity has maintained the Faith “once for all delivered to the saints,” (Jude 1:3).

CONSIDER:

• On the one hand, it is the oldest Church in Christendom. On the other hand, it’s new to most North Americans.

• It is the second largest body in Christendom with approx. 300 million people worldwide. But in the U.S. and Canada there are less than six million.

• In the twentieth century alone, more than 20 million Orthodox Christians have given their lives for their faith, primarily under communism. So high is the commitment of many Orthodox Christians to Christ and His Church, she has often been called “the Church of the Martyrs.”

• She is the Church of some of history’s greatest theologians, scholars, and writers – people like John Chrysostom, Jerome, Augustine, Dostoyevsky, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

But what exactly is

This Orthodox Church?

What are her roots?

What are her beliefs?

And why are there so many who

have never heard of her?
