HAPPY BIRTHDAY J.S. BACHThe world celebrated J.S. Bach’s birthday in March, and radio stations across the country aired interviews with violinist Rachel Barton Pine, whose new release focuses on Bach’s sonatas & partitas for solo violin. With an upcoming appearance on PBS Newshour in the works, Rachel’s profile is on the rise!
CHICAGO TRIBUNE ALBUM OF THE WEEKThe press juggernaut continues for Hans Abrahamsen’s Let me tell you, sung by Barbara Hannigan. “An ethereal dream-monologue ... Hannigan’s singing is silvery-pure of tone and refined of expression, and she receives urgently committed support from Nelsons and his fine Bavarian ensemble. Highly recommended.”
IF PENN & TELLER PERFORMED MUSIC…Musical comedy duo Igudesman & Joo get a fantastic write-up from the Santa Monica Mirror : “If Trey Parker and Matt Stone played the violin and piano, if Penn and Teller performed music instead of magic, and if Seth Macfarlane had a twin, they would be the brilliantly outrageous Igudesman & Joo.”

“Hugely entertaining and characterful … a brilliant portrayal of episodes from Don Quixote. Brilliantly executed with flair and panache.” — Fanfare
“Enormous rhythmic zest … poetic and elegant.” — Cleveland Plain Dealer
“From the very opening, I was enthralled — there is a sort of communal ease about the band, a sense of humour and genuine enjoyment.” — Early Music Review (UK)
Tilting at windmills. The long-suffering Sancho Panza. Sighs of love for Dulcinea. The familiar and fanciful themes of the Don Quixote legend are brought to life by Apollo’s Fire in Telemann’s imaginative portrayal. The Don Quixote Suite sits alongside other suites and
concertos by the composer that reveal his cosmopolitan air and whimsical nature.

KURTÁG: 39 Pieces from Játékok (“Games”) • Suite for Four Hands
“Demonstrate[s] in a nutshell what there is to love most about Kurtág’s music: its imagination, its rigorous concision, its unassuming lightness of touch.” — The Guardian
In February 2016, the city of Budapest celebrated György Kurtág’s 90th birthday with a grand eight-day festival honoring the composer. The music selected for this disc — all previously unreleased recordings — has been chosen from studio recordings in the archive of Hungarian Radio, as well as recordings that the Kurtágs have made at concerts. The bulk of the program is centered on pieces from
Játékok, or “Games,” a huge and ongoing collection for students. However, since the late 1970s these pieces have been seen as much more than study pieces; rather, they are emblematic of important stages in Kurtág’s work as a composer.

STRAVINSKY: Petrushka • The Rite of Spring
“[Katya Apekisheva has] formidable technique.” — The Guardian
“There’s a new batch of thirtysomething British pianists now making waves, and Charles Owen is prominent among them.” — The Independent
The piano reductions for four hands of Stravinsky’s ballets Petrushka and The Rite of Spring are not mere arrangements, but the original source out of which the orchestral scores were fashioned. Here, they are played winningly by Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen.

W.A. MOZART: (arr. Mordechai Rechtman) Quartet in G major, K.285 • Quartet in C major, K.285a • Quartet in F major, K.285b • Quartet in B-flat major, K.298
Meridian Records is proud to announce the release of Mozart’s Bassoon Quartets, arranged by Mordecai Rechtman and performed by four of the most revered chamber musicians from Israel. In the classical style, fewer works were written for wind instruments compared to the number of works written for string instruments or piano. The need to enhance the bassoon repertoire with quality works drove Mordechai Rechtman, former principal bassoonist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, to add four chamber works to his varied selection of arrangements for wind instruments. In his arrangements of Mozart’s flute quartets for bassoon quartet, Rechtman made a few changes, all in Mozart’s spirit. On this new recording, bassoonist Uzi Shalev, violinist Sharon Cohen, violist Lotem Beider, and cellist Yotam Baruch come together to create a compelling ensemble, taking these highly melodic and colorful pieces to a new level, and proving et again that Mozart’s tireless output of innovative music made him the musical king of kings!

“Brilliantly played by Tom Bell.” — American Record Guide (REG 409)
“A marvellous recording, full of light, from a charismatic and virtuosic musician.” — Organists’ Review (REG 409)
A unique but highly appropriate coupling of the complete works for solo organ by Johannes Brahms, along with Arnold Schoenberg’s only work for solo organ, a virtuoso masterpiece of the 20th-century organ literature. The program is played by the brilliant young organist Tom Bell, on the historic organ of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Armley in Leeds. Bell draws together the virtuoso, lyrical, and contrapuntal elements of Brahms’ organ works, strongly influenced by J.S. Bach, and the startlingly similar qualities and influences in Schoenberg’s major organ work. The relationship between these three towering figures in German music across three centuries will be a revelation!

“Consistently outstanding.” — BBC Music Magazine HHHHH
A groundbreaking recording of 11 choral works — 10 of them new commissions by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus — from a diverse range of global composers. For six decades the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus has dedicated itself to presenting the finest examples of choral literature. In recent years there has been an emphasis on presenting the work of living composers. In the mid-1990s a composer in residency program was begun that flourishes to this day, and numerous supporters began to commission new works especially for this choir. The fruits of their generosity may be heard on this recording, of which all but two tracks are first recordings.

W.A. MOZART: Piano Trio in B-flat major, KV 502 • Piano Trio in E major, KV 542 • Piano Trio in G major, KV 564
“Ravishing tone and depth of timbre … a real sense of musical line.” — The Independent
The Rautio Piano Trio makes their Resonus Classics recording debut with a disc of three piano trios by Mozart. Particularly well-known for presenting a wide range of the trio repertoire on both period and modern instruments, the Trio performs here on period instruments including a fortepiano that once belonged to the late Christopher Hogwood CBE.

KURTÁG: Signs, Games & Messages • BARTÓK: Sonata for Solo Violin, Sz. 117
“A virtuoso who is at once darkly cool and immensely persuasive.” — The Times
Renowned British violinist Simon Smith makes his Resonus debut with an extraordinary disc of intensely virtuosic works for unaccompanied violin by two Hungarian composers: the late Sonata for Solo Violin by Belá Bartók, and Signs, Games & Messages by living composer György Kurtág, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday in 2016. The idiomatic and skillful writing for solo violin by both of these composers shows the immense range of this instrument, taking the performer to the edge of what’s possible.

J.S. BACH: Clavier-Übung III
“Farr’s playing … sparkles and seduces in equal measure.” — Classical Ear Internationally acclaimed organist Stephen Farr presents his first J.S. Bach recording with the virtuosic Clavier-Übung III. Containing some of Bach’s most stunning work, this collection demonstrates the composer at the height of his powers in composing for the organ, and was one of the few works that Bach had published during his lifetime. Recorded on the Metzler organ of Trinity College, Cambridge, this album follows Farr’s contemporary organ recital on the same instrument released on Resonus Classics in 2012. Clavier-Übung III is performed here in its entirety, complete with the four “Duetti.” This recording is the first volume in a projected complete recording of the organ works of J.S. Bach by Stephen Farr.
