F O R E W O R D From the Sr. Project manager and coordinator of EANET

Dear entrepreneur and dear facilitator of entrepreneurs,

In June 2014 a group of 14 universities out of 6 countries started working together to create a network for young people that want to start their own business. This network is called EANET. A network that creates advantage for both entrepreneurs and facilitators. Why a network? Entrepreneurs live by the grace of a good network. When starting their business most entrepreneurs have to deal with limited resources. A good network can bring these resources like: business partners, facilities, customers, information about developments in industries, access to capital, customer feedback and most of all, it can inspire and support.

Why should universities facilitate entrepreneurs? One of the main task of universities is to educate young people in a way they find and develop their passion so they can create a living for themselves and can contribute to the society. Becoming an entrepreneur is one of the possibilities of their professional perspective. Especially when having a job for life is becoming rare. But universities in general have some unique features that have huge value for starting entrepreneurs:

- They (students) meet each other in a good stage of life; young, independent, not yet burdened with too many (adult) responsibilities.

- Universities can easily provide: o access to required knowledge, skills and contacts.o access to university facilities like conference rooms, ICT infrastructure.o programs and time to start their business within their education.

All EANET universities started this project from a different stage. Some already had entrepreneurial programs for years, others are about to start them. But all began with meeting student- / alumni-entrepreneurs to find out what their needs are and how they can be fulfilled. In this magazine you can read about this quest to match. As a matter of fact, this quest is the same quest every start-up is going through. If you are inspired by the stories and would like to be involved and/or contribute, please get in contact with the nearest EANET university mentioned in this magazine.

Warm regards,

Michael Tuguntke Sr. Project manager and coordinator of EANET

The TEMPUS Entrepreneur Alumni NETwork (EANET) project is a project funded under the European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The Grant Agreement (544521-TEMPUS-1-2013-1-DE-TEMPUS-SMHES) signed between the Grant holder, Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HVA), HVA being the Coordinator of the project and the EACEA on 28-4-2014. The project duration is envisaged for 3 years, it can be prolonged until all the objectives of the project are reached.

The project is focused on creating of a working international entrepreneurial ecosystem of entrepreneur alumni, young founders, so that universities, companies and more students, graduates and HEI staff would be able to get in contact with the entrepreneurial world. New start-ups will arise.

Wider objective of the EANET project is to establish Entrepreneur Alumni Networks (EAN) at 11 HEIs in Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia which support the entrepreneurial spirit among students, scientists and alumni and raise an entrepreneurial ecosystem in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine

Specific project objectives are

• to create entrepreneurship-related associations at HEIs• to create international entrepreneurial networks of universities, experts, external cooperation partners,

companies and entrepreneurs• to reduce graduates’ unemployment by supporting young founders and create international jobs and

internships in start-ups• to promote active alumni work and act as role models for other alumni associations• to create fundraising structures (each participating HEI should be financially independent at the end of

EANET funding)

Principal outputs of the project are nine “Entrepreneur Alumni Network Associations” set up by each HEI following individual tailor-made implementation concepts for each HEI. Based on an EA database each association will fill its structure with life acquiring members by offering attractive services and incentives, organizing regular networking events and offering an EANET prize to especially active members. Highlight events and social networking media serve the purpose to link EA, business sector and university and to internationally connect the regional EAN associations. To guarantee the know-how transfer and improve the project quality especially designed blended learning trainings will take place in Germany and the Netherlands. Being a relatively new EU member country, Iasi, the Romanian partner, additionally builds up a bridge between Western Europe and the partner countries Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova.

The structural measure realized by EANET is comparatively easy to sustain due to the lean organizational structures and the key role of entrepreneurial Alumni making contacts to industry and government opening up new sources of funding.

Freie Universität Berlin

From Speed-Tapas-Dating to Mentoring

The new mentoring-program of the ‘Network Entrepreneurship’ of the Freie Universität Berlin combines a labor intensive evening with an atmospheric Spanish establishment, where start-up teams and experienced professionals met up for a speed dating event.

Our goal is clear: to find as many perfect matches as possible. With these words Karsten Stein, the expert lawyer and the chairman of the ‘Network Entrepreneurship’ of the Freie Universität Berlin, opened the kick-off event of the new mentoring-program, initiated by Profund Innovation, department of Transfer of Knowledge and Technology at the Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the Founder-Alumni -Network. Based on the concept of a speed dating event, the idea of the new mentoring program is to establish successful partnerships, which will effectively develop in the long-term. Eight start-up teams and accordingly eight mentors were present. Limited by a five-minute timeframe the teams were given the opportunity to introduce their concept of their business idea to every presented mentor. Afterwards the participants voted for whom they preferably wish to work with in the future. To Increase the odds for a successful match both mentors and the start-up teams could vote for three candidates.

“This is like a box full of surprises”, said René Schulz, the co-founder of the Team Volatile (new name: Volasystems). The start-up team of René Schulz develops an interactive light system. Eight times in a row he demonstrated the concept of his start-up on this evening. “I want to present my idea visually with my tablet, so people can get a better impression of my product.” He acclaimed that the idea of organizing a kick-off event in a speed dating fashion is “causal but beneficial for his professional carrier” since he receives feedback on his business idea from experienced professionals. On the other hand, it is also a

profitable situation from the mentors’ perspective, since they get familiar with the latest technological innovations and creative business models. Oliver Schulze, from start-up team Hozi (developing online tools for creating active consumable, animated images), felt very enthusiastic about the speed dating event: “It’s perfectly arranged, we have an idea and we have a chance to choose a mentor who will accompany us in implementing it and bringing it to the market.” After a long concentrated discussion session, in which as many information as business cards were shared, a break was announced. For the physical well-being a delicious tapas buffet was served.

6

Page 7: Dissemination magazine jun16 final

“I want to find a start-up where I can contribute and share my experience”, said Bartosz Kosmecki, the co-Founder and CEO of Scopis GmbH. Kosmecki’s Company develops navigations systems for minimally invasive surgery. Although the concept of Kosmecki’s Company is different from the other present start-ups on the evening, they still have something in common: in the beginning, all start-ups have similar problems. During the break the perfect matches were revealed. Who voted for who? And which team will get which Mentor and vice versa. Everyone seemed to be quite excited. “Well, this is a very important decision, because choosing a certain mentor means that it will influence the future development of the Team”, said Luka Neumann von Mynigma. He and his partner are working on an email-app, which automatically protects one’s privacy. Eventually Mynigma’s match is revealed: Lydia Horn, a co-founder of mobile melting GmbH. Experienced in the field of app-development she certainly is a perfect match for Mynigma.

René Schulz is also very satisfied with his match. From the very beginning, he had a very positive impression of Bartosz Kosmecki regarding his experience. So he would definitely help René and his colleges in setting up the sales and finding the appropriate funding sources. The evening came to an end in the late evening hours at 11pm. But the real work is going to start just now. The future cooperation includes four personal meetings and monthly scheduled ‘E-Mentoring’ events. The initiator Karsten Stein was very confident that the evening was carried out so successfully: “We all very are happy and have fallen in love”.

Hogeschool van Amsterdam celebrates second lustrum of Entrepreneurship education

On October 10, 2015 HvA organized its Entrepreneurship program’s 10 years anniversary with alumni, faculty, and current entrepreneurship students.

Hosted by alumnus and co-founder of GreenClaim, Tom van Bokhoven, we celebrate with a full house of at least 200 hundred alumni and students. The evening begins with an overview of catching, funny, impressive and memorable (historic) images taken during the past 10 years of the entrepreneurship program. Jan Scholte caught the impressions of 10 year Entrepreneurship at the HvA, the many companies formed, concepts worked out and efforts put in it by the students, in a short but entertaining and inspiring documentary movie

An entrepreneurial panel discussion informs and entertains the audience as they debate various statements about the future of entrepreneurship. The panel consists of (alumni) entrepreneurs, Willem Baumvalk – Dean of HvA Faculty of Business & Economics; Laurens van der Horst – program manager minor Entrepreneurship; Boris Veldhuizen van Zanten - internet entrepreneur; and Sjoerd Arlman - municipal officer Economic Affairs of the city of Amsterdam.

During the evening various Awards are handed out by Rector Dr Huib de Jong, Willem Baumfalk and ACE (Amsterdam Centre for Entrepreneurship) Director Erik Boer. The Award for “Best Team” goes to the highly successful team of Zwenk (2011), which went from the “Best student-company-idea - After Garlic (2007) to “Most successful alumni enterprise” Green Claim (2010). The latter was hilarious as the presenter, Tom, did not realize that it was actually his company that won the award! De winner for Best Karaoke ( Jan Scholte:"Yes, I understand now that karaoke is education too…. ") is chosen by the audience. Talented singer Lonneke Haan receives the Golden Chicken.

Page 9: Dissemination magazine jun16 final

Besides all the inspring key notes, discussions and good music, a special photo collection by Sanne van de Most was exhibited at the party location at Pakhuis de Zwijger. This special collection showed images of many minor entrepreneurship students and their student companies interviewed and photographed between 2012 en 2014.

After an impressive cover of 'With a little help from my friends' by Martin Haring en Alex van Heeswijk, accompanied by guitarist Wim de Jong, joined by all the lecturers of the program, it is time for top DJ Vincent Reinders from 22Tracks to spice up the evening with dance beats.

What a night to remember. It is such a success that we will celebrate every year instead of every 10 years.

Entrepreneurship represents the capacity to start a new business. Some key words that define entrepreneurship for me are: management, organization, expectations, profit, innovation, risk-taking, competition.

2. Which was your motivation to become an entrepreneur in this domain? The motivation to become an entrepreneur was/is represented by the

following factors: Business, Progress, Teamwork, Personal and professional growth, Money.

3. Why nowadays there is used often the term of creative, innovative andeven ecological entrepreneurship?

All these characteristics of entrepreneurship creativity, innovation, even ecology have a great significance. The first one relates to the creative sector, developing initiatives that evolve and grow the market in a certain sector. Innovation, to my mind, deals with risk-taking, originality and finding new ways to take creative work to audiences. The ecological entrepreneurship implies community and the importance of it and its’ actions. The last one has a very good social impact.

Kutaisi University

The Kutaisi University is Part of the EANET project since the year 2014. The role of the University in the process of helping young entrepreneurs starting new business can be very big. Georgia has a developing economy and helping young entrepreneurs is very important to create new start ups and as a result creating new job opportunities. Within this project in the Kutaisi University has created an active entrepreneurial alumni association and entrepreneurial alumni center (EANET center). One way that the University contributes to entrepreneurship is

through direct help to young entrepreneurs. The first year of the project implementation

there were two conference meetings in the Kutaisi University with the entrepreneurial alumni network and University graduates. First meeting was on the topic of Entrepreneurship role in the economic development. Entrepreneurship and economic development are intimately related. Whatever be the form of economic and political set-up of the country, entrepreneurship is indispensable for economic development. Entrepreneurial process is

a major factor in economic development and entrepreneur is the key to economic growth. Second meeting was about Entrepreneurship and student motivation. The educational institutions play important role in development of entrepreneurial competencies through various courses, training and development programs. It is an important factor in determining and developing entrepreneurial qualities in the students. Since today’s students are tomorrow’s potential entrepreneurs.

Beginning of the year 2016 University held the third meeting on the matter of Problems of Entrepreneurship in Georgia. The first and perhaps most obvious factor affecting entrepreneurship in Georgia like any other developing country is the lack of capital. People have limited personal savings and lack the necessary capital to start their own business. Thus entrepreneurs must use a financing where they are charged high interest rates. With that being said, this is where an advantage of developing countries comes into play. Also worth to mention another an incredibly common problem that causes startups to fail is a weak management team.

32

Page 33: Dissemination magazine jun16 final

There were two dissemination seminars about the EANET project in the University. Kutaisi University EANET center organizes charity events. Last charity event which center organized was to help children with a disability. EANET Center helps students to learn the basics of entrepreneurship, provides educational seminars and workshops for the development of students startups. The center helped the University graduate students to create startup company “Horizon”, which works in the field of tourism. One way that Kutaisi University can contribute to entrepreneurship is through direct research. Often university research is thought of as being conducted by professors for the benefit of professors and academics. However Kutaisi University research lab is capable of developing and conducting research on behalf of startup businesses. This can be vitally important for the startup company that simply needs that final piece of the puzzle to complete their innovative product.
