PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Pennant Hills Rotary Club Pride of Workmanship Award Recipient – Ms Janelle Dennis On Monday evening I had the great pleasure of accompanying Ms Janelle Dennis, Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) to the annual

Pennant Hills Rotary Club Pride of Workmanship Awards ceremony. The program itself acknowledges and recognises the work that people in our local community do in their respective organisations that set them apart from their peers. I greatly appreciate the opportunity that the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills provides by facilitating this important and valuable process of recognition in our community. All of the award winners were worthy of recognition, not only within our organisations, but also our wider community.

From the Pennant Hills High School perspective, Ms Dennis is an extremely worthy award winner. I include an excerpt of the citation that was read as she received her award.

As the Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts at Pennant Hills High School for over 7 years, Janelle Dennis has earned the support, trust and respect of her colleagues and the community. Committed and dedicated to her practice, she teaches with care, enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference to the learning of all students. To that end, Janelle’s teaching is personalised and tailored to the individual differences of students: their differing capacities, interests, learning styles and cultural heritage.

She is recognised for her unassuming efficiency and compassion, encouraging all, no matter their circumstance. She is modest about her outstanding contributions to the school, is trusted and respected.

Janelle actively engages in the full life of the school, involving herself in the school’s cultural and extracurricular activities. Without her contributions to the school’s Visual Arts Exhibitions, Student Mentoring Programs, enrolment procedures and other cultural events, many programs would be less dynamic and less relevant. Her passion for the school, her kindness to students and their families and her dedication to her practice are worthy of significant acclaim.

Emotional Wellbeing at Penno - Website Addition I am extremely pleased with the way our students consider and work towards the improvement of our school for their peers. The creation of the Emotional Wellbeing at Penno website is no exception. A group from our Student Leadership Council (SLC) of genuinely committed students who wanted to do something practical for their peers, have worked very hard under the tutelage of Mr Ross Banyai, Teacher HSIE to bring this website to fruition.

I encourage all readers of Jumbunna to investigate this new initiative by clicking on the fabulous tile link located on our website.

Student Leadership Council (SLC) While on the topic of the SLC and the importance of student voice in our school, I would also like to commend and thank the SLC for coordinating and running the Blanket and Beanie Appeal. We have already had well over 200 blankets, beanies and scarves donated and they are still coming in.

This sense of social justice and commitment to our local communities is highly valued as are the donations that so many families have made. Thank you all very much.

P&C Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall Who would have thought that by approximately 1.30pm we would be sold out of our democracy sausages and that the cake stall, which started with such an impressive suite of tasty treats, would be down to the last few morsels. A successful and well attended initiative. Thank you to the volunteers who manned the stalls. In particular, thank you to Mr Greg Hammond, Ms Jenny Manning and Ms Tamara Filer who ably coordinated us before, during and after the event. It is important that our local comprehensive high school is seen by the local community in its service.

Pennant Hills High School P&C Contributions The work of the P&C and the contributions that many families make are used to improve learning opportunities for our students. An example of this can be seen on page 11 of this newsletter. The CAPA faculty secured a P&C grant and has purchased a new drum kit for the Band Program and mega deck staging for the Drama program. We are very appreciative of this equipment and our students and staff are looking forward to using them.

Healthy Canteen Menu The canteen has a new Healthy Options Menu. Our Manager, Jo has worked very hard with her team to secure our Healthy Canteen status and provide a menu that includes a wide range of healthy choices. The menu can be found on page 8 of this newsletter or via our website.

Pennant Hills Public School (PHPS) Fete On Sunday afternoon I will have the pleasure of listening to our Concert Band 2, Choir and String Ensemble as they perform at the PHPS Fete. It will be another opportunity to hear some fantastic music as well as continue to build on the great links we have with our partner primary school. I am looking forward to attending.

NAPLAN Congratulations to Years 7 and 9 on the manner in which they approached and conducted themselves during the NAPLAN tests last week. The tests ran extremely smoothly and I thank all the teachers involved with organisation and supervision, in particular Mr David Leys, Head Teacher English (Relieving) who coordinated the enormous task.

VALID Trial Testing Pennant Hills High School has also been selected to trial new test items for the VALID Science testing program.

Years 9 and 10 will assist in trialling a number of potential test items as well as broadening their own scientific capacity. We look forward to a positive experience for our students.

GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD LEARNERS How Parents Can Assist

Pennant Hills High School’s primary function is to:

establish a harmonious social climate in which children can learn well

set examples of courtesy, reasonableness and fairness

hold expectations of courteous and civil behaviour within the student body

teach students how to conciliate over conflicts

encourage students to support their peers in a positive way

Junior students have recently been presented with the Good Friends, Good Learners brochure and spent time with their Year Advisers discussing positive relationships with their peers. Parents can assist by spending time reviewing the Good Friends, Good Learners brochure with your child and discussing how to effectively manage conflict when it arises in everyday situations.

Different types and causes of conflict can arise at school. These can range from disagreements and temporary falling-out with friends, to discourtesy and name-calling.

Sometimes adolescents do not know how to deal with conflict well, and a relatively minor situation can escalate to ongoing hostility, rivalry, group harassment and bullying.

If your child comes home upset about a situation of conflict at his or her school, you can:

Listen to the story of how this developed;

Be calm and supportive;

Acknowledge their feelings by letting them know that it is normal to feel hurt, sad, scared, angry, etc;

Help your teenager be specific in describing the issues: Who, What, Where, When;

Ask them for their ideas on how they might resolve this positively; and

Suggest that there are adults at school who could assist, such as the Year Adviser, School Counsellor

or Head Teacher Student Wellbeing.

If the situation persists, and is affecting your child’s attitude to school in a detrimental way:

Ask your child if you may contact personnel at the school to let them know there is a concern;

Ensure as far as possible that your teenager knows what action you are proposing to take and that he/

she agrees with it, and be guided by his/her response; and

Make an appointment with the appropriate personnel so that time can be made available for you to talk.

Unhelpful parent responses:

Ignoring your teenager’s response.

Becoming emotional and angry.

Advising your teenager to physically fight back.

Confronting the teenager who causes the conflict.

Confronting the family of the teenager causing the concern.

YEAR 9 ENGLISH PRIMARY SCHOOL WRITING COLLABORATION

During Term 1, students from Miss Morton’s Year 9 English class were given the opportunity to participate in an exciting creative writing collaboration with Year 5 & 6 students from West Pennant Hills Public School.

As part of a gifted and talented writing program run at the primary school, students were tasked with composing a short mystery story that would be published in an anthology and included in the school library.

So how did Penno help out? Our Year 9 students acted as editors for their primary school peers. Conversing via email with a Year 5 or 6 student, they read several drafts and provided valuable feedback to their buddy on characterisation, setting and plot. This week the WPHPS gifted and talented writing group coordinator, Ms Serene Lau, very kindly sent through a copy of the published short stories. The students from Ms Morton’s Year 9 English class who were involved in this collaboration thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were very excited to see (and read) the fruits of their labour!

Blurbs from WPHPS Magic, Murder, Mystery anthology:

“Hallow Road is a completely normal place. Almost. At the end of the street there lies a haunted house. It’s famous in the town for being spooky, but one kid decides to find out the truth. Meet Lukas.”

“Cold-hearted, destructive ad never-ending; the crime Theo witnesses will make a scare on his life. Will he make it through?”

“Sam, a cruel bully finds an invitation in his bag from someone he doesn’t know. He goes to the address in the middle of the night and finds a terrible surprise that changes his life forever…”

THANK YOU TO OUR P&C

The Pennant Hills High School Drama and Music Ensemble students and staff would like to acknowledge and thank the P&C for their ongoing support through the provision of funding late in 2018 to purchase a new drum kit for the Music Ensembles Program and some Megadeck for the Drama Studio.

The drum kit will be used during band practise and for various festivals throughout the year. The Megadeck was installed in the Drama Studio recently, and will be used as a seating platform for audiences who attend our theatrical events and by our Drama classes as an upraised area for class presentations and lessons in general.

We have the Music Festival scheduled for 19 June and a Year 11 Production scheduled for early Term 3, and so this equipment will be used and enjoyed by many in the very near future.

Our P&C at Pennant Hills High School has been a very generous benefactor of the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) faculty at Pennant Hills High School and their support is greatly appreciated.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT CREW TRAINING

Last Friday under the guidance of Year 9 students Emma and Isabelle together with former student, Byron, the following crew were trained in providing the light and sound technical support which is required at our various school festivals, events and productions.

They were: Beth, Gianna, Rebekah, Moe, Andrew, Charlie, Ellen, Jovan, Scott, Jackson, Shera and James. Some of these students bring previous experience to the crew and others are keen to learn new skills.

They were all very positive about their training and are very keen to put this into practice. We now have 18 students trained as the Tech Crew and they provide a valuable and much appreciated school service.

A big thank you to all the teachers who ensured the carnival ran smoothly. Cheers to Miss Morton and Mr Banyai who manned the BBQ all day, and Mrs Austin who proved she is the best MC in Pennant Hills.

A huge shoutout to everyone who dressed up and showed great school spirit. This includes Hamish, Josh and Henry who all decided to wear bodysuits. Great commitment boys.

The Open Girls Soccer team fought hard against Cheltenham Girls High School but were defeated in a competitive game.

Student Spotlight Lachlan and Ella It is always a pleasure to celebrate the successes of our students. Congratulations to Year 7 student Lachlan for becoming the U12 Boys Age Champion at Sydney North Swimming. Lachlan has continued his winning form recently achieving fantastic results at the All Schools Swimming Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park. Lachlan finished 1st in U12 50m Freestyle (27.43sec), 1st in U12 Butterfly (30.46sec), 1st in U12 100m Freestyle (1.00.56sec), and 3rd in U12 0m backstroke (33.63sec). An outstanding achievement.

JUMBO RADDISH

Our Year 9 Agriculture students Elliot, Riley and Jack were delighted with the fruits - or should we say vegetables of their labour when they uncovered this enormous raddish.

They are eagerly awaiting to see what the remainder of their crop looks like in the coming weeks.

Congratulations on a successful harvest.

THE GIANT STEPS CHARITY BALL

Congratulations to Year 10 student Sarah and her sister Year 8 student Ella on their outstanding representation of Pennant Hills High School at the Giant Steps Charity Ball earlier this month.

The girls volunteered at the fundraising event which helps to raise much needed funds for children and young adults with autism. It supports the children, their parents and families - dedicating its aid to quality specialist education. They raised an astonishing $525,000.00.

Sarah and Ella worked hard until midnight speaking to guests, selling tombollas and helping with the silent auction. This year was Sarah’s third year and Ella’s second.

Well done girls on an outstanding effort for this worthwhile cause.
