directly home after school concludes each afternoon. Do not detour via parks, shops etc. in line with existing social distancing restrictions.

Adhering to these guidelines will ensure a smooth and safe transition back to school. Hand sanitisers, paper towels and surface spray disinfectant (for desk cleaning) have been delivered to each classroom. Disposable gloves are also available. Additional cleaning will be undertaken with special attention to cleaning desks, doorknobs, bathrooms and other high touch surfaces.

Students who do not adhere to these health and safety requirements will be reminded of our expectations and school discipline procedures will be implemented.

Attendance and Roll Marking - As it is the expectation that students will attend face to face classes on their scheduled day in, teachers will be marking the roll through Sentral as is the usual practice. Students will be marked as absent and notification of their absence from parents/caregivers will still be required by email or note.

Lateness - Students who are late to school should follow the usual process and report to Student Reception to swipe in. There should not be more than two to three people in Student Reception at one time. Students are requested to observe social distancing rules and form a queue outside, waiting their turn.

Non-scheduled Attendance - If a student needs to attend school on their non-scheduled day, the same arrangements that were in effect for Weeks 1 and 2 will still apply. Students will continue to follow their timetable and work online. A teacher will be allocated for supervision.

Canteen - The Canteen will re-open in a limited capacity. All lunch orders must be made online through the ordering system Qkr! by Mastercard. Drinks and snacks ie. chips, milo cereal, ice creams etc. will still be available for purchase over the counter.

School Uniform - Full school Winter uniform is expected to be worn on the day/s that students attend school. A reminder that hoodies are not part of our uniform and are not permitted to be worn.

Special Religious Education - Face-to-face SRE and voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools will not be available until schools resume normal operations.

Additional Information - Parents and caregivers should refrain from entering school grounds wherever possible. If students need to be picked up during the day, please email details ie. student name, grade and time of departure to: [email protected] or alternatively send a written note.

If an audience is needed with a teacher, please email the school with the request and you will be contacted in due course.

We will not be accepting cash at school. Payments can be made in person by card only or online through our website via the Make a payment tab.

Cricket Practice Nets and Student Shade Shelters Following a successful bid by the P&C and our school for funding through the Community Building Partnership Grant to improve facilities for our students and the local community, construction of three cricket practice nets and the refurbishment of the centre cricket wicket on our oval has been carried out over the past few months.

Thank you to Ms McAllister, P&C representative for her hard work which secured $30,000 from the State Government (see photos on page 7). The great news is the 2020/2021 cricket season will be a fabulous one.

In a separate grant application Mr O’Byrne, Deputy Principal, successfully secured $11,000 from the Federal Government’s Local School’s Community Fund. With additional funds from our school, construction has begun on 6 new shaded tables near the main oval (see photos on page 7).

We look forward to seeing our students when they return to school next week.

Ross Warren, Principal

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome Back! Welcome back to Term 2, traditionally a very busy time of the year here at Pennant Hills High School. I am looking forward to a productive term and the opportunity for our students, parents/caregivers and staff to resume a version of normality.

The tradition of strong and valued partnerships within our school community has never been more prominent than during the past 6 weeks when our culture of Nil Nisi Bonum rose above the chaos to reign supreme. Congratulations to our students for their resilience in embracing the online learning platforms. Thank you to our parents/caregivers for the support provided to both children and staff. Thank you to our staff, both teaching and support, for their work in ensuring our students have remained engaged with learning at Pennant Hills High School. It has been a team effort, which was always going to ensure its success.

Following is a recap of information regarding our Phase 1 - managed return to school:

Model of Learning - All students are to follow their current timetable for Weeks A and B (two week cycle). Students are scheduled to attend school on the following days:

Year 12: Return to school full time, following their current timetable

Year 11: Return to school Mondays, following their current timetable for Mondays

Year 10: Return to school Tuesdays, following their current timetable for Tuesday

Year 9: Return to school Wednesdays, following their current timetable for Wednesday

Year 8: Return to school Fridays, following their current timetable for Fridays

Year 7: Return to school Thursdays, following their current timetable for Thursdays

Expectations to ensure health and safety of all students and staff - Safety is a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students are expected to behave responsibly, recognising the importance of protecting the health of themselves, their peers and staff. Students will be expected to:

Stay home when unwell. If symptoms present themselves whilst at school, parents/caregivers will be contacted immediately to collect their child from Sick Bay located in Student Reception.

Assist in keeping classroom desks and school equipment clean as directed by teachers.

Engage in regular handwashing especially during breaks, before eating and before returning to class.

Not share food or drinks. Bring a water bottle. For sanitary reasons, bubblers will be closed. Bottle refill stations will remain in operation. Students are expected to adhere to social distancing standards whilst using.

Remain 1.5m apart from other students wherever possible. This will be maintained in the classroom for students in Years 7 – 11 with the ‘split class’ policy which divides larger classes into two rooms. All efforts to maximise distancing will occur for Year 12 where applicable.

Maintain social distancing when queuing. Floor markings in the bus bay and canteen have been created to assist.

Bring their own device, ensuring it is fully charged for use throughout the day. Bring headphones for use during lessons.

Bring their own stationery such as pens, calculators, rulers etc. Sharing will not be permitted between students nor will supplementary equipment be provided by staff.

Cough or sneeze into their elbows if necessary to avoid spreading infection. Avoid touching face. All students are reminded to bring their own EPIPENs and asthma prevention medication where applicable.

Use soap, sanitisers, wipes and other health items in a responsible manner. Students are welcome to bring their own sanitiser for personal use.

Come directly to school each morning and proceed

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR MAY TOP TIPS FOR STAYING FOCUSED IN AN ONLINE LESSON

By now we are all starting to get a bit more used to different modes of learning. If you are still finding it challenging to stay focused in online lessons, here are some tips to help you:

1. Have clear distinctions between schoolwork time and your personal time. If you let those two worlds collide you will end up never really feeling like you can have time to yourself without feeling guilty. Then in the learning times you can make a more conscious effort to stay on track.

2. If you know you can’t stay focused in your bedroom, then do your learning in another part of the house where someone can check up on you. Working in an area of the house where you will be supervised can help you stay on track.

3. Take notes when you are listening to the teacher talk or make a mind map about what is being discussed in the lesson. If you are writing about what you are learning it will help you to be more focused.

4. Turn off all notifications and make sure your mobile is on silent (or preferably in another room). Don't have other windows or applications open on your computer. Take away the temptation so you don't send messages to other students or work on other tasks during a lesson when you are meant to be focused.

5. Every 20 minutes look away at something 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain. Stand up and stretch if you need to.

MEDICAL ALERT

Students who have been identified by their parent/caregiver as asthmatic

must carry their own reliever puffer (e.g. Ventolin) at all times.

It is the parent/caregiver’s duty of care to ensure their child carries their puffer.

CANTEEN NEWS ONLINE ORDERING

Pennant Hills High School Canteen is very happy to advise that we are now accepting lunch orders online. All you need to do is download the app Qkr! by MasterCard, set up a profile and start ordering.

Lunch orders can be placed daily no later than 9.15am or for your convenience you can order up to 2 weeks in advance. You pay online via the Qkr! by MasterCard app and your child can then collect their lunch from the dedicated lunch order window.

The advantages of using Qkr! by MasterCard are: your child is guaranteed to receive their choice of lunch and no long queues to wait in.

If you have ordered and you know your child or the student who ordered will be sick and not in on the day, just call the canteen on 9473 5020 by 9.30am, let us know and we can hold the order over until the student returns.

We are very proud of our menu and its compliance with the NSW Government Healthy Canteen Strategy. We really look forward to making lunch times easier for our students and receiving your online orders soon.

WOODWORK WORKSHOP As a part of their return to school next week, Year 11 Industrial Technology students spent a day in the Technology workshops yesterday working on their project. The aim of the day was to catch up on the practical component. Success in their Higher School Certificate (HSC) Major Works next year is as much about working together as it is about completing their individual work.

Students worked hard across 3 rooms and had a great day.

CAPA NEWS

Welcome Mr Nugent will be on Long Service Leave throughout Terms 2 and 3 and we welcome Mr Fowler to the Music Faculty in his place. Mr Fowler is a very experienced Music Teacher with extensive experience in the Arts field. He is very keen to work with our students and to support Mrs Coomber.

Recent Events Though it has been a difficult time for all students, staff and our wider community over the past months, teaching and learning has continued with vigour within the CAPA Faculty at Pennant Hills High School.

We may not have always been in the classroom, but we have embraced Google Classroom, Zoom and Adobe platforms to provide a firm continuum of learning for all of our students, and they, in turn, have responded with commitment.

The CAPA Faculty have recently made many significant adjustments to their programming, both within the classroom context and in terms of the exciting extension opportunities that were planned in 2020 in Drama, Music, Photography and Visual Arts. Towards the end of Term 1 we had to cancel the following activities for our students:

Theatre Subscriptions to the Belvoir Theatre for Year 12 Drama ENCORE evening at the Opera House for Stage 6 Music Africanbeat Incursion for Year 7 Music Barangaroo Excursion for Stage 5 Photographic and Digital Media Sydney Botanic Gardens Excursion for Year 9 Visual Arts Various Music Ensemble commitments within the community Music Ensembles rehearsals were cancelled until further notice Cancellation of Music Camp. This, in particular, was distressing as it was our second attempt to run the camp,

having postponed it from the first date in February, when we had severe storms and no electricity play havoc with our arrangements.

I thank all CAPA staff for the time, effort and enthusiasm that went into organising these events. Many hours go into the planning of these experiences. We will continue to find ways to bring the wider world into our classrooms, and to give our students every opportunity to enhance their creative and/or performance experiences as the year unfolds.

HSC Students Our Year 12 students have had adjustments made to their HSC studies in Drama, Music Extension and Visual Arts. These changes, made by NESA, have been put in place to support our students as they showcase their skills and abilities at this critical time in their school careers. We wish them every success as they make the final preparations for their performances and practical submissions for their HSC studies.

“Isolation Challenge” (from the front cover) On a more whimsical note, whilst our Year 11 and Year 12 Visual Arts students were in isolation over the Easter Holiday break, they were set an “Isolation Challenge” to photograph themselves as the subject matter of famous artworks. Many rose to the challenge, some very fine samples of their endeavours can be seen here and on the front cover of this newsletter. Congratulations to Alex, Antonia, Ellesha, Ellie, Jade, Madie, Maya and Kristen.

Looking forward… The CAPA Faculty are very much looking forward to having our students back in classrooms next week. In the meantime, we encourage all of our students to continue to engage with their studies online from home and to be in contact with their teachers if needed. Take care and stay safe.
