DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 4 Commitments Term 4 has been a busy and exciting time for all students and staff. Final assessments, excursions, Crossroads, sporting events and the upcoming yearly exams are all events that have contributed to the

hectic term. Congratulations to all students on their achievements to date, and good luck for your final assessments and exams.

Year 12 (2016 have officially started their Higher School Certificate course and have begun preparing for their first assessment tasks. I would like to remind these students that it is imperative they begin to plan and manage their time carefully, and commit to a regular revision program. A simple way to begin this process is to dedicate one hour after school every day to revising the concepts that were studied in each class that day. This ensures that they will consolidate their learning and also identify areas of study that require extra attention or clarification from their class teacher.

Crossroads Year 10 will embark on their Crossroads journey at the end of this term. Crossroads is a mandatory program for students in NSW Government Schools. It is designed to assist senior students address issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when they face significant life changes and challenges. The course aims to prepare and support students as they encounter situations related to identity, independence and their changing responsibilities. Crossroads builds students’ sense of empowerment and respect for themselves and others. It is mandatory for all senior students to attend and is organised and run by the PDHPE staff. I would like to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) As you are aware, at Pennant Hills High School, we encourage students to bring their own device to enable them to access the internet and/or school network by 3G or Wi-Fi. The device can be a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

BYOD enables students access to a future-focused learning environment which initiates the development of research and learning skills. Furthermore, it allows teachers to develop student skills in using a wide range of software, programs and apps to assist learning. Evaluators also report that laptops have facilitated the development of 21st century skills such as digital literacy, creativity and innovation skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, communication and collaboration, and self-directed learning. Importantly, it supports the practice of Project Based Learning which is supported by our 2015-2017 School Strategic Plan.

As a teacher who consistently uses technology in

the classroom to enhance learning outcomes, I encourage you to support the BYOD program and, if possible, provide your child with a suitable device and encourage them to bring it to all lessons. By using a device in class, at the most basic level, all students have the opportunity to develop their research skills and instantaneous access to information.

If you would like any more information regarding this program, please contact me or our BYOD coordinator Mr Huang.

Uniform and Attendance A gentle reminder that we are a uniform school. At Pennant Hills High School, we have the expectation that your child will attend class every day and will present themselves in full school uniform. If a child’s attendance falls below 85%, both Deputy Principals are notified. Generally speaking, we often find that common reasons for attendance falling below an acceptable level are due to illness, injury and family leave. In certain circumstances, where we notice a pattern of non-attendance and school refusal, the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO), Alexandra Southgate, is notified and we proceed with further investigation. If your child has been absent from school or is not in full school uniform, please provide a note with a clear explanation outlining the reasons why.

The Great Penno Reno IV Finally, I would like to acknowledge all the hard-working students, staff, parents and community members who attended The Great Penno Reno IV on 31 October and 1 November 2015. Your commitment to making our school environment a beautiful and welcoming site is greatly appreciated. We are aware of the countless hours that our P&C representatives Penny Dean and Margo Leggott, have spent in order to organise the event. On behalf of our entire school community I would like to thank everyone involved for their amazing contribution. If you would like information on the next Penno Reno in 2016, please email [email protected]

I Wish everyone all the best for the remainder of Term 4.

Amanda De Carli Deputy Principal

P&C Meeting 24 November (followed by AGM) 7.30pm in the School Library

All parents and caregivers are most welcome to attend this meeting. P&C meetings provide the wider school community with a forum for discussion as we work together with staff to sustain and further develop the best possible learning environment for our students.

The discussions are complemented by presentations from staff, focussing on various aspects of education and, in particular, what is on offer at Pennant Hills High School.

The Great Penno Reno IV Thank you to all the families who participated during the weekend Reno. It was a huge success, with 181 volunteers helping across the three sessions. Many people came for more than one session, and together we once again changed and improved the aesthetic appeal of our school.

Some of the many improvements include: the planting of 600 tube stock; 100 cubic metres of mulch spread around the new seating at the oval, in existing garden beds and down the footpath at Boundary Road; 12 sets of outdoor chairs sanded, primed and painted; gardens cleaned and weeded; turfed area aerated and fertilised; and pressure cleaning of the Main, Library and Administration Quads.

Thank you to Lyndall, Deb, Sally and Heidi for keeping everyone well hydrated and fed.

A special mention to Kennards Hire at Hornsby who have, over the past four years, provided us with equipment at a heavily discounted price. Thank you for your generosity.

Please visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheGreatPennoReno/ for more photos. There will be details posted shortly regarding the GPR V planned for completion prior to the 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the school in 2016.

BEARDSON’S WINTER BLANKET CHALLENGE

Students of Pennant Hills High School’s Environmental Club, together with their teacher Mr Stanton-Cooke, participated in the Beardson’s Winter Blanket Challenge 2015, to support Landcare Australia. The Beardson’s Challenge encourages men to grow a beard and ‘Start a conversation about conservation’. Over 160 participants registered throughout Australia. They proved that just by growing a beard, money could be raised to plant trees. As the saying goes, ‘Money doesn’t grow on trees’ but the group proved that money can grow on beards and plant trees! The men became walking, talking billboards for conservation. Over $15,000 was raised from this campaign, and 10,000 trees were planted at the Bundanon Trust property, in the Southern Highlands. The trees will provide additional habitat for wildlife and assist with weed control.

Students were delighted to see first-hand their efforts making a real difference for the environment. Congratulations to the students and their enthusiastic teacher, Mr Stanton-Cooke, for participating in this worthwhile cause.

END OF FINANCIAL YEAR

As the school’s end-of-financial year (30 November) approaches, parents and students are reminded that we will be unable to receipt any monies from Tuesday 24 November till Tuesday 1 December (inclusive). We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
