CENTRALONGMONT

COMMUNITY CENTER

The CENTRALongmont Community Center is

not a place, at least not yet, but a part of who

we are. Our goal is to make a tangible

difference as we transform lives in our

community.

Logic Model - For the past few months we have

been working on a logic model for the community

center. A logic model is a way to strategically look at

an agency’s current resources, needed resources and

goals. It helps to define the community needs, short

- and long-term goals of an agency and provides a

method to evaluate outcomes. This logic model will

help us to evaluate the overall community center

and each of the programs offered, and be a useful

tool when we begin the process of looking for

financial backing from grants and donors.

St. Vrain Singers - If you or someone you know

would like to audition for the 2014-15 season,

contact Lee Smoot at [email protected]

After-School Program for Crossroads School -

A six-week trial for this program was successfully

completed. A regular group of three students and

three volunteers had a fun, positive experience. We

hope to continue the program this fall but will need

volunteers committed to mentoring these students

on a weekly basis Wednesday afternoons. If you

think you might be a good fit for this ministry, contact

Wes Trevor at [email protected]

Columbine Elementary School - There are many

opportunities for you to get involved at Columbine.

For more information contact Donna Ferrey at

We still have several opportunities for others to help out. We need church members who love our children to volunteer to work during one worship service on one or more Sundays during July or August (everything you need will be provided). We also need several additional volunteers to serve as hall monitors. If you're willing to help, contact Kat at 303-521-8721.

July and August

As the time for us to say good-bye to Alva approaches, we want to share some information with you about our Children's Ministry for July and August. GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Actions Taken By General Assembly

The 221st General Assembly (2014) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), like all GAs, conducted a great deal of business and took many actions. Two, however, are of particular significance given their long-term ramifications for the denomination: same- gender marriage and divestment from three companies doing business in Israel.

Regarding same-gender marriage, GA took two actions.

First, GA approved a measure giving pastors the discretion to perform same-gender marriages in states where it is legal. Please note that same-gender marriage is currently NOT legal in Colorado—here, same gender couples may enter into a civil union. The measure also gives churches the same option with regard to its property, which is to say that each Session has the option of permitting (or not) same-gender marriage ceremonies in the congregation’s facilities. This measure took effect at the conclusion of the General Assembly on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

Second, GA voted to send to the presbyteries a change to the Book of Order concerning the definition of marriage. Currently, marriage is defined as being “between a man and a woman”; the change sent to the presbyteries would define marriage as being “between two people (traditionally a man and a woman).” Presbyteries have one year to vote on the proposed change. If a majority approves the change, it would take effect June 21, 2015.

Regarding divestment, GA approved the following

action: “Instruct the Presbyterian Foundation and the Board of Pensions of the PC(USA), to divest from Caterpillar, Inc., Hewlett-Packard, and Motorola Solutions, in accord with our church’s decades-long socially responsible investment (SRI) history, and not to reinvest in these companies until the Mission Responsibility Through Investment Committee of the PC(USA) is fully satisfied that product sales and services by these companies are no longer in conflict with our church investment policy.” These three companies were chosen because: “Caterpillar provides bulldozers used in the destruction of Palestinian homes and for clearing land of structures and fruit and olive tree groves in preparation for construction of the barrier wall; Hewlett-Packard has extensive involvement with the Israeli army and provides electronic systems at checkpoints, logistics and communications systems to support the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, as well as

business relationships with illegal settlements in the West Bank; and Motorola Solutions provides military communications and surveillance systems in illegal Israeli settlements.”

The Session is aware of the complexity of these issues and that they give rise to many questions. The Session is also aware that many in the congregation have strong feelings about these issues. Therefore, Session will hold a Town Hall meeting at 9:45 am, Sunday, July 13, in the Fellowship Hall to provide information and answer questions. There will also be several opportunities to discuss these issues in a smaller group setting. Elders will host groups at the church at 9:45 am, Sunday, July 20. Two Elders will also be hosting groups in their homes: Brenda Holt-Harris (5036 Fox Hill Dr, 80504, 720-221-8255, [email protected]) and Jason Kruse (2212 Ridgeview Way, 80504, 303-772-6848, [email protected]) at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, July 23. Please RSVP to Brenda or Jason.

The Deacons are launching a new ministry at CENTRALongmont called The Mercy Fund. Mercy means kindness or help, a

disposition to be compassionate, and benevolence. We hope to show God’s love to our church family in times of personal crisis or hardship through prayer, community service referral/member service referral and financial assistance. The Mercy Fund is open to members of CENTRALongmont, as well as to regular attenders. We will be providing more information about The Mercy Fund in the coming months.

If you have a need to use The Mercy Fund, you may begin the process by contacting the front office, the pastor or any active deacon. A deacon will then reach out to you to begin the confidential application process.

If you would like to support The Mercy Fund, you may designate The Mercy Fund in the memo line of your check made out to Central Presbyterian Church. Grocery Certificates may also be designated for the fund. You can also donate your talents by signing up for the CENTRALongmont Member Service Bank. This bank is a list of members who are willing to use their skills and gifts to help out other members in time of great need.

Thank you for your support in helping the diaconate care for those of our congregation.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who

knocks, the door will be opened. Matt 7:7-8

COMMUNITY GROUPS

We need to live our faith. It’s one thing to know what you believe—to recite doctrine and quote Scripture. It’s another to put that knowledge in service to how we live. Day-in and day-out. And good as it can be to live it for ourselves and our family and friends, better still is to live it in and for community. That’s what community groups are about. People—twelve or so—some of whom are followers of Jesus and members of Central, others who don’t hang their hat in any church, and still others who aren’t entirely sure about this Jesus guy at all. What they have in common is a commitment to doing life together, discovering what it means to live your faith, and, in the process, making Longmont a little better place to call home.

Community groups meet weekly or biweekly for fellowship, learning, and mission. They’re made-up of all ages and types of people. They meet in homes, restaurants and bars, and parks. You’re welcome to visit any group to see if it clicks for you or, because we’re forming new groups on a regular basis, explore the opportunities of being part of a start-up.

Our Community Groups Include:

“Go Now” is a very diverse group of friends who love and support each other unconditionally. They are interested in expanding their missional outreach and supporting more needs. Currently their mission focus is Boulder County Care Connect. They meet Tuesdays at 4 pm at Left Hand Brewery. For more info contact John or Evelyn Maher at [email protected] or 303-827-9843.

“King’s Team” is a group dedicated to growing and sharing garden vegetables, and leading monthly sing-a-longs at Cinnamon Park Assisted Living. They meet twice monthly at a yet to be located “community table” with light refreshments (at a park picnic table in the summer). For more info or for meeting dates/times, contact Marv Van Peursem at [email protected] or 303-775-0734.

“Latino Ministry” - Their mission is to create and strengthen opportunities to serve the immigrant community in order to promote strong Christian families, raise Christian leaders, provide Christian discipleship, encourage community involvement and support multicultural unity. They meet for dinner and worship at 5 pm the second and fourth Sundays of the month. For more info contact Eddie Mendoza at 956-458-6307 or [email protected]

Thank You for the cards, comments, hugs, gifts, warm

wishes and a gorgeous quilt. I have been blessed by your

out pouring of love. My goal has always been that we all

walk closer to the Lord, especially your little ones.

May the Lord bless you-- and guide the church as you

seek a new children’s person. Psalm 78: 4-6 “ We will tell

the next generation of the praiseworthy deeds of the

Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done, so the

next generation would know them, then they would put

Our sister congregation, Chawama Presbyterian Church, in inner-city Lusaka, Zambia - Living the Gospel in the midst of the poor, most of whom have been ravaged by HIV/AIDS, Chawama has established prayer houses throughout the community, provided micro loans for small business startups, planted a new congregation, and staffs a Home Health Care program for people with AIDS. Perhaps most importantly, Chawama runs a school for children orphaned by AIDS. For the vast majority of the children, this school is their only opportunity to receive an education. Central has been blessed to come along side our brothers and sisters in Chawama, providing prayer and material support. We send mission teams on a regular basis to work with the Chawama church and gain a better understanding of how we can support their work. Just as importantly, the Chawama church has taught us what it means to serve rather than

Session Highlights

At the June 24, 2014 Session meeting, the following issues were addressed and actions taken:

Approved forming a partnership between the Central youth program and the local Young Life organization which will allow the two groups to share and balance programming, staffing, and areas of expertise.

Approved a new job description “Director of Next Generation Ministries” which will result in changes to Wes Trevor’s current responsibilities being done in phases. Session also approved an increase in Wes’ salary of $10,000 annually effective September 1, 2014. This will come from a reallocation of current funds and will result in no increase in the church budget.

Approved adding increased wireless capabilities throughout the facility by adding additional routers in parts of the building.

Approved using the church as a primary warming center for the coming season.

Approved a series of informal meetings in July to inform the congregation of recent changes approved by the General Assembly - July 13 a “town hall” at the church following the 8:30 worship service, July 20 “coffee with the Session” at 9:45 at the church, and July 23 at 6:30 pm at the home of Kris and Brenda Harris. More details will be announced in the Sunday bulletins in the next few weeks.

A Vocal FACE Off

and Fundraiser for A Woman’s Work

A Woman’s Work provides support for women in the St. Vrain Valley whose immediate financial needs cannot be met by other sources. In 2013, AWW assisted 257 women by granting over $241,000. They only ask that recipients perform an

act of kindness in return. Members of our community are fundraising for A Woman’s Work through A Vocal FACE Off.

FACE is a nationally recognized vocal rock band based out of Boulder County, bringing a new edge and attitude to the human voice. Using just five singers and a vocal drummer, Face creates a rock-music phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed. No instrument and no special effects – just six guys.

Our own Lee Smoot is participating and hoping to be on stage with FACE! The top four fundraisers will sing with FACE at the benefit concert on Sunday, August 10 at 6:30 pm at Lifebridge Church. Concert tickets go on sale July 1. $15/adult, $10/children, and $25 for reserved seating. For more information on the contest and concert or to make a donation in support of Lee, please contact go to awomanswork.org You can also contact Lee Smoot with questions. Thanks for your help!
