Commodore’s Message

Greetings everyone, As we go rolling into the heart of summer, I hope everyone is healthy and enjoying themselves. With the opening of the snack bar this week we’ll have pretty much restored all of our regular services to pre-COVID standards. Granted, things are different. However, we have much to be thankful for as we have one of the finest facilities and the best group of folks as members that I have found anywhere. I worry a lot. It’s in my nature. In my dad’s neighborhood in Manhattan, everyone had a nickname. His was Bennie. His younger brother Pete’s was Slugger and their baby brother Charlie was Chin.

Yep, Charlie was a little on the porky side and possessed a second entirely independent chin. Well, World War two started and off the two of them went to join the navy. Why the navy? Part of it was the shock and anger at the attack on Pearl Harbor and part of it was they could see the Brooklyn shipyards when they ventured out of their neighborhood. Stay with me on this, I’m actually going somewhere. Well my dad Joe and brother Slugger shipped out while Chin was initially left behind because he was too young. While on his adventures as a sonarman aboard a destroyer escort in the South Pacific, he acquired a brand new nickname, this time from shipmates. He was always embarrassed when it came up but Slugger would bring it up at exactly the precise moment that would cause him the most angst. His nickname was Mother Goose. It seems he had a penchant for watching over his fellow sailors and apparently had managed to get a few out of a “little” trouble. So, they looked up to him for guidance and to bail them out when they wandered. And there you go, the tie in. I worry a lot. But here’s the beauty of it, I worry so others don’t have to. I was always the one that the neighborhood parents would say, “it’s alright if they go to the drive-in, they’re with Joe”. I took that responsibility to heart. Don’t misunderstand, I manage to have fun and sometimes I get as much enjoyment from watching others around me having fun as if I was doing it myself. But I always know the lay of the land and never forget the responsibility involved with anything I take on. Sooo, I worry a lot. Let’s get back to BYC stuff. We’ve got an Independence Day weekend planned that’s hard to imagine. It was not long ago that we weren’t sure if we would be open in any capacity to have a celebration. But here we are with music the whole weekend, fireworks, a parade and a very different Opening Ceremony and Flag Raising. It will be a much more intimate one than what we’re accustomed to but it will be good. It’s for our members who have stood strong with the Bridge and Board in fighting to keep Baltimore Yacht Club a paramount Club on the Bay, in the country and recognized in foreign lands, all through the strangest of times. In the coming weeks we have some of our favorites. We have our annual vacation cruise where, do to circumstances we’ll be staying pretty much in our own neighborhood of the Bay. It won’t be less, just different. As a matter of fact, it may be even better as we improvise and create. We have our annual Beer Pong tournament which is always an exciting time and guaranteed to be full of fun, laughter and hardy competition. This will be followed by Week on the Island (WOTI) which is still in the planning stages as we’re adapting to changes forced by the circumstances, as well as limitations of the vendors and groups we deal with. A learning experience for sure. I’m going to take one from the United States Marines. We’ve been forced to improvise, adapt and overcome. And so we shall.

Please continue to support the Club. Enjoy the dining experiences, the pool, the view and all the little things that make Baltimore Yacht Club so special. And I’ve got to mention the staff. They have somehow managed to present such a positive and pleasant experience for members while I know that all the changes forced on them this year have to be causing stress. Kudo’s to GM Scott and the entire staff for keeping it all running so smoothly. Special thanks go to Princess Maddy Coard who performed so eloquently as she competed in the Queen of the Chesapeake pageant. The judges didn’t see it the same way but Maddy was the winner in my eyes. Congratulations to her in making through both a difficult year and different kind of pageant and representing BYC so well. First Lady Ruthie and I are very proud of how the Club has performed over these last couple of months. Everyone has done their job. Next month we’ll have more to talk about as we’ll have plenty more events coming up. The island looks as good as I can remember seeing it, as does the pool. Regarding the pool, many thanks go to the Longo family for getting the pool prepared for our early opening date. The entire family, children included, worked so hard to insure everything was perfect. If you see them, please say something and perhaps offer a libation (Shirley Temple for the kids of course). And we can’t say enough about the flowers! We had two days of plantings with our R/C Bill and F/C Keith handling the first round down below and then Island Beautification led by our own Princesses mom, Sarah Coard while F/L Ruthie was in the hospital. Assisted by the ladies of the Bridge, some Past First Ladies and members, the results are stunning. I think we’ll leave this on the word, stunning. Pretty much sums it up. Both F/L Ruthie and I look forward to seeing you on the hill and around the basin. And on the vacation cruise! Warmest regards, Commodore Joe Vislocky

Vice Commodore’s Message

Happy July everyone. I hope all is well?? It has been great seeing everyone on the Hill and doing the best at social distancing. I hope you are taking advantage of the great food our staff is putting out for all to enjoy. Please patronize and support the Club as much as you can to be able to get us through this difficult and trying time. We appreciate everything you can do!! The pool is open, and things are going as well as can be expected. I want to thank the Longo family for all the help and expert advice in facilitating the pool opening. Their work is greatly appreciated. Please, when you see Pat, Susan and their children give them a big thanks, they worked hard for our

pool enjoyment. We are excited about the 4th of July weekend and the Middle River Fire Works. We will be having a small Opening Ceremony with the current Officers and Past Commodores who wish to participate. Please be mindful that Social Distancing is still encouraged. We will have a packed house as well, so let’s have respect and consideration for all on Sue Island this 4th of July Weekend. We continue to improve the look of the Club on the Hill and in the Basin. Our General Manager Scott Lockwood and Basin Manager Donnie Quinn have been working hard to get small projects completed in time for the for the big weekend. You will see a fresh coat of paint on the metal stairs leading to the pool area and the siding has been cleaned at the drink window on the deck. Also, thank you R/C Bill Ortman for the drink shelf at the bar window. This is a nice touch for convenience I hope you’ve noticed the beautiful flowers on the Hill and around the Basin. Thank you, F/C Keith Lessner, R/C Bill Ortman for all your hard work planting the flowers in the pots. And a special thanks to Fleetress Sam Lessner, Sarah Coard, PFL Lavern Hammon, Lady Karen Ortman and Lady Pat Meredith for the finishing touches to the flower beds and boxes on the Hill. Your support in making BYC a better place is greatly appreciated. Moving ahead to the Weeks Cruise. F/C Keith has put together a great cruise considering some setbacks amid Covid-19 challenges and restrictions. Please join us for and exciting and fun time. The participation and comradery is what makes our Club successful. As Helen Keller once said…Alone, we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Rear Commodore’s Message

Greetings BYC members, Summer is here and its feels good to finally enjoy the new normal at the club. Much effort has been made by our Bridge and Board of Governors to ensure that all safety guidelines are met and enforced for the safety of all members. Please be responsible when using our carry out or dining room at the Club. It was just announced that the snack bar is now open for your enjoyment. This should ease some of

the burden from our kitchen during the weekend and speed up food delivery times. Remember to observe all of the established guidelines while at the pool and snack bar. There really isn’t much new business in the basin as most slips have been assigned and occupied. We had some late requests for temp slips for run-abouts and jet skis and were able to accommodate these requests. Some general information for all run-about owners. If your trailer is on the spit, please request a trailer sticker from the office so we know what belongs to who. Also, please visit your equipment-trailer/kayak/dingy to make sure it’s still there, on the rack, and not becoming a breeding pool for mosquitos. It is possible that wind from storms can overturn dinghies and knock kayaks’ from their racks. I just read an article about the importance to all boaters about the use of some form of float plan. Whether you are going away for the day/week/month it is important to let someone know your plans in case of emergencies. You don’t need a formal plan, but if you would like some guidance about what information is needed, visit the Boat US website for a copy of their Float Plan form. I have encountered some loose boards on C and B piers and have taken measures to have them fastened or replaced as needed. When you encounter a defective deck board or some other problem related to our safety please report it to our Marina Manager, Donnie or myself to have it corrected. Have a safe, fun summer Bill Ortman Rear Commodore [email protected] 443-425-5576

Fleet Captain’s Message

Hello from the Fleet Captain and his immediate boss, SAM! I would like to thank everyone for supporting BYC this spring and supporting the staff members and our outstanding General Manager, Scott Lockwood! What a team he has assembled to get us through a difficult time. We should all be looking forward to a wonderful summer. As your Fleet Captain, or as I have heard, my new nickname, Captain Sink, fall out of a kayak twice in ten minutes and that’s what happens. As Fleet Captain I see myself as the entertainment director, kind of like Julie on Love Boat. The sinking was just good old fashioned slap-stick entertainment. I

would be re-miss if I did not thank Dr. Barry Cohen and his crew for saving Sam from the depths of Sue Creek. She was in the kayak with me! Many members have commented on the afternoon entertainment at the pool and the majority of comments have been very positive. BYC has musical entertainment all day July 4th and July 5th. Please come up the hill and celebrate with everyone. Everyone who is anyone will be there! (Hey, come on, I am trying my best here). Hopefully P/C Dick Bruns will lead the 4th of July Parade again this year with his friend Uncle Sam! We are moving forward with our Week’s Cruise from July 11-18, 2020 to Tolchester, Haven Harbour North and Sassafras Harbor. The registration form has been sent, with all the details, to all BYC members. Please complete it as soon as possible and return it to BYC by July 02, 2020 to help ensure a slip at our destinations. Some ports are in high demand so the sooner the better. WOTI is alive and well and moving forward. Sam has reached out to the chairs from the past years and most events that allow for social distancing are going forward. Some events will not be held this year in an abundance of caution. Details on WOTI will be out once events have been finalized. Captain Frank McKee has arranged for the Rocky Point Golf Outing on Tuesday, August 04. Details will be forthcoming from Captain McKee. WOTI is sponsoring a Beatles tribute band known as Sgt. Peppers on July 31, 2020 outside under the stars. If you can still remember the spirit of the late 60’s please dress accordingly. Those old tie dyed shirts, bell bottom jeans and head bands should still fit, (yea right). A little squeeze here and a big tuck there should do it. Sam and I hope to see everyone having a great Fourth of July in the greatest country on earth. If I can help you in any way please let me know. Thanks Fleet Captain Keith Lessner & Lady Sam [email protected] 443-977-7499

A Message from the Princess

Last year I was attending 18 Club openings, planning for movies and pool parties for WOTI, and getting ready for the Weeks Cruise. Some weekends, I was going to two or three parties. It was tiring, but I was always smiling after I left seeing my friends. My favorite event last year was our own BYC opening. At the opening, the other Princesses and I got to the plan a skit for the night and we all had a sleepover on Wojo’s boat. All of these events really gave us a chance to get to know each other. This year, we couldn’t do any of this. Instead, we had to be creative – we set up group chats, zoom meetings, and

pulled together videos even though we were all separated. However, I am writing this fresh off a modified Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant - a pageant without my brother, sister, all of my grandparents, and no club members present. And the biggest party of the year – a celebration party for Queen Dulayne – all cancelled. I am happy that I got to congratulate Dulayne for representing as Queen of the Chesapeake, for all of her resilience through the confusing times, for becoming one of my best friends, and her continuous support to the Yacht Club community within the midst of a very challenging year. I share this congratulations and sentiment with all the Yacht Clubs, their Commodore’s, Board Members, staff and Princesses because I was not the only one going solo this year. I also want to extend my congratulations to the new Queen, Princess Jessie of Kent Island, and wish her and everyone good luck!! I have to admit, I was disappointed to not bring home the crown. After the pageant my dad said “What’s better than being Queen of the Chesapeake?” His answer – “Princess of the Baltimore Yacht Club.” I think we can all agree on that. How can anyone stay disappointed when they are Princess of the best and proudest club on the Bay! So will I close this article by sending a big “virtual” hug and thank you to our Officers and our Members for all of your support this year. My wish for everyone is to stay resilient, stay safe, and stay BYC strong. Stay Safe and Wish us Luck! – Princess Madeline

C Pier Report

Well, here we are in July!! Even though there was no Opening Weekend, C Pier folks have been trying their best to enjoy the club, their boats and each other! It is good to see the slips fill up. Some folks are just now getting back. So glad to see everyone! We had a quasi-club cruise to Rock Hall and it was a great turnout!! VC Barry, RC Bill, the Mellingers, the Focus', the Harshmans, the Grandes and Lortzs joined in on the fun. The Mellingers and Focus' encountered boat problems but thankfully, both are back, safe at BYC. The 4th of July should be spectacular, as always, this year. If you see me, share some news you'd like to share for next month's Spray!! Looking forward to the week's cruise and hope many of our fellow C Pier neighbors join for all or some of the trip. Until next month, happy and safe boating!!

A & B Pier Report

Wow, it’s already July 4th! This summer is flying by for sure. Dan & Connie Ziegfeld’s younger granddaughters Tate & Demi have been working hard now that school is out and now have obtained their boater’s license. Now they have to pass an even harder test – Poppy’s! (Dan Ziegfeld) Congratulations to John & Kathy Schlee’s grandson Cole who graduated from High School in the Class of 2020. Wishing Cole all the best as he heads toward his next adventure. Unfortunately John & Kathy haven’t been able to be at BYC their boat is still in the hospital but they hope to be back very soon.

Many Thanks to Jake and the servers for making our lunch with my mom so special. I mentioned it was her birthday so once we were finished our meal and the server took our plates Jake and a few servers came out with a piece of apple pie with a candle and sang “Happy Birthday”! It was so nice and totally unexpected. My mom turned 80 on June 27th and because of Covid-19 I was unable to

have a surprise party for her but this kind gesture certainly made it special. Wishing everyone a “Happy July 4th Celebration” - Be safeJ That’s all for now, Take Care, [email protected]

Ahoy D Pier!

It sure has been hot lately, situation normal for summer on the Chesapeake Bay and a special time of year for boaters. Hats off to the Board and BYC Staff for finding a way to open and operate the pool during these challenging times! Charlotte and Wendell Wilson are back finally from Florida. We should see their boat back in its slip soon. They missed everyone while away and hope everyone at BYC is healthy and staying safe. The D Pier fishermen have been out and P/C Andy confirmed he caught some good ones. Nothing heard from yet from anglers Doc Toomey, Don Kaelber, or Garret Morris. Missing OWE and other annual events enjoyed at BYC for generations has been tough. Reminiscing and shooting the breeze about the old days has helped a bit. Last winter, Ed Gerner kindly provided a couple pictures from BYC past. It seems now is a good time to take a look at them, share a story or two, and see if we can figure out who was who. Ed thinks that the first picture (taken on the bar porch) might be an early Oktoberfest at Club. Per Ed, the guy on far left is Chuck Dwyer, long time BYC member & sailor, denizen of B Pier and the guy on far right is then Commodore Arnold Petersen of D Pier. Ed is not sure about the fellows in the center, but suspects one could be Kaiser Wilhelm. Ed notes the second picture is the 1963 version of social distancing, aboard BUTTONS in slip D 38. The guy standing on his boat on far right with no shirt is P/C George Wallis (Ed’s step dad), and the guy in the center with brush haircut and no shirt is (later to be P/C) Joe Petersen. If you can identify people in the pictures and/or have a story about them, please send me a note. Stay Safe and see you on D Pier. Joe Hellner

Sue Island Sue

SIS witnessed a P/C hanging off the side of a center console while in his dingy. Guessing he didn't have enough C notes to get an outboard engine. SIS keeps hearing a BM new vessel but has yet to see said vessel in the basin. SIS heard that 15 kayaks went for an hour tour.... the Fleetress was seen swimming but the story from the FC was that the kayak was taking on water . The FC went down with the boat. Don't worry the Fleetress was rescued by the Fleet Surgeon and a PC SIS heard that about 25-30 boats went over to Haven Harbor for the weekend cruise. One vessel decided to have a valet docking service and the other vessel decided to go rock hunting. Both vessels made it back home after a extended holiday. Till Next Time, Sue Island Sue

Kilroy

I am so happy to be writing a Kilroy article and not be in quarantine. The club, as well as the State and County, are slowly returning to the “new” normal. I don’t believe things will go back to the way they were in the past anytime soon. Face masks are the new normal, along with social distancing and reduced capacity in restaurants, stores and other venues. The club officers and management have been doing a spectacular job keeping members safe during the club’s re-opening process. The pool was opened a little later than originally scheduled, but earlier than other pools in the area. The reservation process is working well and members are learning the new process. Carry-out continues to work well and with the clubhouse open members can enjoy indoor dining. I saw that the Mates even have begun to sell clothing to members in the clubhouse. Again, things are beginning to slowly return to the new normal. I hear that some D-pier members had problems taking their trash from their boats to the dumpster. Even though the trash hit the water, the members diligently fished all of the trash out and put it in its proper place. I have not heard that other piers are having this problem so I am assuming this is only a D-pier issue. The Fleet Captain and Fleetress have been trying to offer activities to members even if Mother Nature does not cooperate. A kayaking adventure was scheduled for a Friday until a storm rolled through and the adventure was re-scheduled for Saturday. Good call F/C and F/S. I heard the Saturday kayak adventure had a dozen or so kayakers. The only call for the safety boat was when the F/C and Fleetress flipped their kayak. Once the Fleetress was safely aboard the safety boat the F/C was on his own. It appears the kayak had rain water in it which caused the kayak to ride low in the water and to take on additional water. The F/C went back to shore, drained the water and continued on the adventure. All adventurers arrived safely back to club. Did you know… The ground breaking ceremonies for BYC’s pool took place on Sunday, January 16, 1966 and planned for an opening on June 15, 1966 or sooner. The official dedication of the pool took place on July 4, 1966, That will make our pool 54 years old on July 4th. In January, 1966 the club received requests for 37 membership applications from 12 members. Princess Selection Day was April 24, 1966. The June 1966 Spray had over 50 pages of ads from members and local businesses. The BYC 1966 annual cruise went to 6 ports – Georgetown Yacht Basin, Great Oak Yacht Club, Miles River Yacht Club, Cambridge River Yacht Club, Oxford Pier St. Marina and Castle Marina. Even as the things are opening we need to be vigilant and continue to follow CDC guidelines. Wash your hands, practice social distancing and keep your family close. “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now” – Martin Luther King, Jr.. We are in this together and we will continue to be stronger together. Be safe and stay healthy.

Manager’s Message

Hello BYC Members, It is with great anticipation that myself and the staff prepare for July. June was a turbulent month filled with rapid changes and adjustments. As we enter July we are mostly happy that we are all back together at work again. The Club has taken measures to protect our membership and staff so we hope that everyone feels safe and protected from the global

pandemic around us. However, there are no guarantees and we encourage everyone to be vigilant of the safety and concerns of our BYC Family. Our 4th of July celebrations have been finalized and we have a packed weekend. Since the Middle River area is one of only a few to be hosting a public fireworks display, we are fortunate. However, we will be monitoring the Island to make sure we are providing a safe environment for our membership, guests, and staff. If you have any concerns or suggestions on how we could better address the adjustment to the health concerns, please let me know. As I consider ways to finish my article this month, I read back and saw this article has a tone of safety. We are all adjusting to the pandemic and the measures we are currently facing are still preventive and not even necessarily the new normal that we hear discussed. Over the last few weeks I have gone out to see how other establishments are handling these adjustments to see if there might be things we could be doing better. After a few visits I am extremely proud of the commitment and actions we have taken to keep our BYC family safe and healthy. I feel comfortable coming to the Club and I hope everyone else does as well. Stay Safe! Cheers, Scott Lockwood, CCM
