COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTORS LETTER The Official Publication of the DaySpring Emmaus Community of Southern Indiana Fall Issue—October 2017 Hi friends! I have certainly been on a journey as a member of the current Dayspring Emmaus Board. I remember thinking within a few hours of getting accepted into law school in the spring of 2016 that cer- tainly no one would ask me to be the Board President now….and as you can see, I was wrong! It was made crystal clear to me through a series of radical unforeseen events that I am now in the exact position which I was called to be, and what an honor! To think that I am a wife, mother, full time employee, part time law student, AND President of this Board is likely overwhelming or even crazy to many. It is only by counting on Christ that I can get through each day. It has been amazing to see the fears I had melt away and it has also been a great opportunity to work so closely with the members of the current Board, who I now call friends. We are entering a very exciting time of year…our Fall Walks are right around the corner! Please continue to keep our Lay Directors, Mike Scroggins (Walk #133) and Marilyn Curry (Walk #134) lifted in prayer. Their team meetings have concluded, and now we continue to fill the conference room with pilgrims. We are praying continually for those who are already signed up, as well as those that do not even yet know they will be going. This Fall, due to a scheduling conflict, Lincoln Hills is unable to host our candlelights for both walks, so the Board made the decision to hold the candlelight gatherings at Unity Chapel United Methodist Church in Ramsey this Fall ONLY. Those gatherings will start at 7:30, as usual. One piece of news that I’m sure many in the community will be excited to hear is that we are moving the Walks back to O’Bannon Woods in the Spring of 2018. Accordingly, the Fall walks will be our last set of Walks to be held at Indian Creek. Nonetheless, we pray you will be willing to come out and support this set of walks by serving a meal, attending the candlelight, or signing up to pray. The team dedication for Walks #133 and #134 will be held at Georgetown Christian Church from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on October 9 th - this is a community event, all are welcome! I want to personally thank you, the Dayspring Emmaus Community for all you do to support the Walks every year. This community is an incredible place to serve and it is such a joy to be amongst so many like -minded people. I really hope to get the chance to know more and more of you as the year progresses. In closing, I’d like to share some verses from Hebrews that have been on my heart in recent weeks, as I find them quite fitting as we enter the upcoming year: Hebrews 10:24-25: “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Call up the people you haven’t seen in awhile or have missed, and invite them to come back into fellow- ship with us as we approach this exciting time in our community! COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTOR’S LETTER

The Official Publication of the DaySpring Emmaus Community of Southern Indiana

Fall Issue—October 2017

Hi friends! I have certainly been on a journey as a member of the current Dayspring Emmaus Board. I

remember thinking within a few hours of getting accepted into law school in the spring of 2016 that cer-

tainly no one would ask me to be the Board President now….and as you can see, I was wrong! It was

made crystal clear to me through a series of radical unforeseen events that I am now in the exact position

which I was called to be, and what an honor! To think that I am a wife, mother, full time employee, part

time law student, AND President of this Board is likely overwhelming or even crazy to many. It is only by

counting on Christ that I can get through each day. It has been amazing to see the fears I had melt away

and it has also been a great opportunity to work so closely with the members of the current Board, who I

now call friends.

We are entering a very exciting time of year…our Fall Walks are right around the corner! Please continue

to keep our Lay Directors, Mike Scroggins (Walk #133) and Marilyn Curry (Walk #134) lifted in prayer.

Their team meetings have concluded, and now we continue to fill the conference room with pilgrims. We

are praying continually for those who are already signed up, as well as those that do not even yet know

they will be going.

This Fall, due to a scheduling conflict, Lincoln Hills is unable to host our candlelights for both walks, so

the Board made the decision to hold the candlelight gatherings at Unity Chapel United Methodist Church

in Ramsey this Fall ONLY. Those gatherings will start at 7:30, as usual.

One piece of news that I’m sure many in the community will be excited to hear is that we are moving the

Walks back to O’Bannon Woods in the Spring of 2018. Accordingly, the Fall walks will be our last set of

Walks to be held at Indian Creek. Nonetheless, we pray you will be willing to come out and support this

set of walks by serving a meal, attending the candlelight, or signing up to pray. The team dedication for

Walks #133 and #134 will be held at Georgetown Christian Church from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on October 9th-

this is a community event, all are welcome!

I want to personally thank you, the Dayspring Emmaus Community for all you do to support the Walks

every year. This community is an incredible place to serve and it is such a joy to be amongst so many like

-minded people. I really hope to get the chance to know more and more of you as the year progresses. In

closing, I’d like to share some verses from Hebrews that have been on my heart in recent weeks, as I find

them quite fitting as we enter the upcoming year: Hebrews 10:24-25: “Let us think of ways to motivate one

another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do,

but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”

Call up the people you haven’t seen in awhile or have missed, and invite them to come back into fellow-

ship with us as we approach this exciting time in our community!

In order to sponsor a pilgrim you will need to attend a sponsor-

ship training session. A session is approximately 30 minutes.

Even if you have sponsored pilgrims on previous walks, this train-

ing is required. You need only complete the training once in order

to sponsor pilgrims in the future. This training program will be

presented by the DaySpring Emmaus Community Board mem-

bers at various venues throughout the community over the next

several months and at all future follow-ups. If there are any reun-

ion groups or church groups that would like to host the sponsor-

ship training, contact Sarah Lentz ([email protected]) to

schedule training. Check the Website or Facebook for dates of up-

coming training.

COMMUNITY SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR’S LETTER

To Emmaus Community,

I have heard many people say, “My walk to Emmaus was a life changing experience.” If you are one of those peo-

ple, what have you done about it? Does anyone know what the Lord Jesus did for you while you were on your walk

to Emmaus?

As Christians, we are called by God to be his witnesses to a lost and dying world. One of the ways to be a witness

is to give your testimony of what Jesus has done in your life to another person. The Holy Spirit can take your testi-

mony and use it to convict that person of their need for Jesus or use it to encourage that person in their walk with

the Lord.

I encourage you to be bold, tell others what Jesus Christ has done for you. The blessings will be overwhelming.

Your brother in Christ,

David Bailey

Community Spiritual Director

Chrysalis Flight 59 January 13-18, 2018

Lay Directors Mark Smithson & Allison Ward

Chrysalis is for high school teens in grades 10-12 who

are also 15 to 18 years old. The weekend is struc-

tured to help participants grow closer to Christ and

be more comfortable to step out as leaders in their

communities.

Students who go on a Chrysalis are eligible to serve

on an Emmaus Walk; if they serve on Emmaus they

will not be able to attend as a Pilgrim. If they do not

serve on an Emmaus Walk, they will be able to attend

as a Pilgrim.

Please pray about serving on a Chrysalis, and about

sponsoring a teen for Chrysalis. Teams are being

formed now for the January 2018 Flight.

Forms to volunteer and or/ sponsor can be found on

the Chrysalis website (you can link to it through the

DaySpring website too).

What is a Reunion Group? The Emmaus group reunion is a small accountability group of two to 12 persons who have usually participated in the

three-day Walk to Emmaus and who want to continue their pursuit of a life lived wholly in the grace of God. These small follow-up groups help

pilgrims translate the message conveyed on the Walk to Emmaus weekend into a daily walk with Christ. With the regular support of a few faithful

friends, the gift of God's love in Jesus Christ becomes a lifestyle of Christian discipleship through the threefold discipline of piety, study, and action.

Group reunions meet at regular times, usually weekly for an hour. The meeting consists of persons' sharing the stories of their walk with Christ during

the past week. Members listen to one another, celebrate the grace of God in each person's life, and reinforce each one's core commitment to living in

union with Christ in all facets of daily life. Members express that reinforcement through gentle accountability, encouragement, and support of one's

stated discipline and plans. Excerpted from The Group Reunion by Stephen D. Bryant. Copyright © 1995 by The Upper Room
