You had to be there to see if anyone re-ally got nekid (which means having fun without no clothes on!). Maybe you can catch a whiff or why we call it participate rather than attend, eh? The month of July opens with a bang! The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine issue number 180 will be delivered and then we jump right into Independence Day celebrations. You can call it 4th of July if you like, but it is INDEPEN-DENCE DAY we celebrate. A bunch of colonists declared our INDEPEN-DENCE and a rag tag militia sent the pompous British army back to England in defeat. Fire works are a feature of the celebration and this year The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine along with Greensboro Harley-Davidson and World Class Powersports invite you to celebrate with us at NewBridge Bank Park in Greens-boro on July 5th. There will be FREE biker only parking on Bellemeade Street, a bike parade on the baseball field, discount ticket prices (if you pre register), and fireworks after the game. BTW, The Greensboro Grasshoppers put on one of the best fireworks displays I have ever seen on a regular weekend night, so we can only imagine what they are going to shoot off for INDEPENDENCE DAY! A Visit With WWII Veteran

By: “Old Spook” A year ago, at the 9/11 Commemorative Run at Edisto Beach, an event I inaugurated 3 years ago, Harold “Papi” White arrived in a wheel chair with his caretaker, Chris Butler, and became the center of attention with the girls from Jaguar’s Men’s Club. They all wanted to have their pictures taken with him. All the veterans wanted to hear about his exploits in WWII on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock from 1942-46 under the command of Admiral John McCain II and his second tour with the Air Force as a liaison in Washington, DC. A bit of a celebrity back in the day, “Papi” rubbed shoul-ders with all of the political hotshots of the day since he was responsible for flights for the dignitaries. It got to a point that the Senators asked that “Papi” be on the flight to take care of their needs. As an E-5 “Papi” became the NCO in charge of these flights. At that time there was no Air Force 1. Now, at 91 years of age, “Papi” is beginning to feel his age. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer 6 months ago and was given 2 months to live. Papi doesn’t listen much to the doctors and is still full of piss and vinegar. My cohorts and I from the Legion Riders, Post 179 West Ashley Chapter of Charleston, SC, and the CVMA stopped by to visit with him when we received a request from “Papi” to come down to see him. “Papi” is back at the VA medical center in Charleston for a few days to recuperate from a fall. We all wish him well and ask that you remember these men from the “Greatest Generation” who gave us so much of what we have today and offer up a prayer for his recovery.

Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride XIIIBy: Sandy Giddis Downtown Sevierville, TN thundered with hundreds of motorcycles that came to pay tribute to our fallen military. The ceremony kicked off with Kelley Stout singing our National Anthem accompanied by “Mr. Lincoln” from the American Eagle Foundation with handler Mike Acuff. Kelley was fol-lowed by T.C. Barnett, Jessie Barnett, and Kaleb James Wright singing America The Beautiful. The guest speaker this year was Lieutenant Colonel Don Campbell (Retired). Lieutenant Colonel Campbell was a pilot during the Vietnam War and flew 118 combat missions in an F-100. Wreath placement was done on behalf of law enforcement and firefighters, protecting the front lines of our country by Officers T.C. Faulconer and Kevin Stone. Following the wreath was Gold Star Mothers President, Brenda Shelton, and Sherrie Battle McGhee. During this time Smitty Giles played Taps. Kickstands went up at 11am for a 65 mile ride to Grainger County’s Veteran’s Overlook. Sevierville City Police Depart-ment and Sevier County Sheriff’s Department escorted over 1200 motorcycles on a safe ride through 5 counties assisted by those county’s Sheriff and Police Departments. On the way through Morristown, Preston Mayes, with the Fire Department arranged for a Morristown Fire Department ladder truck to sit in the median with the ladder extended and a huge American Flag hanging from it for all the riders to ride under. It gave me goose bumps to see it, and then ride under our flag. The closing ceremony on top of the mountain consisted of placing of the wreath while Smitty Giles played Taps. Kelley Stout sang “Till The Last Shot’s Fired”. During the pause in the song, American Legion Post 202 Honor Guard, Gatlinburg, did a 21-gun salute, and then she finished the song. Tribute To The Troops Memorial Day 2013By “Old Spook” “Old Spook” here. The name is derived from my service in clandestine operations in Vietnam. I’m an old guy (70), with a young head. I’ll ride at the drop of a hat. I’ve enjoyed cover-ing the runs and the benefits for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, but I get no better satisfaction than to cover events and benefits for veterans. Memorial Day stands as the ultimate tribute to all of the fallen soldiers who gave their lives in the defense of our freedom. On the Friday preceding Memorial Day, The Legion Riders of Post 179, Legion members, and the auxiliary posted American flags at all of the grave sites at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in West Ashley. On my way to the cemetery from Hollywood I noticed that there were no American flags flying anywhere. I was a bit puzzled. I know Pearl Harbor took place a long time ago but is still remembered. September 11, 2001 was just a blink in time ago. Why no flags? Maybe they will be up over the weekend, I thought. Early morning Sunday came and it was time to prepare for the ceremony. On my way to the cemetery, my mouth dropped open and my heart fell like a rock into my stomach. Not one flag was flying. We need to remember that this is the land of the free because of the brave. The Legion Riders stage this event every year and every year we lay wreaths at the base of each of the service’s monuments to commemorate the sacrifices made by men and women like us. Colonel John D. Tim E. Strickland represented the US Navy, Lt. Colonel Gerard Vaughn represented the US Air Force, Sgt. Perkins represented the Marines, and Lt. Len M. Driskell represented the US Coast Guard. Melanie James represented the American Legion Auxiliary. Norm Meyer represented the Sons of the American Legion. Tomas P. Lynes represented the American Legion Riders. Commander Walt Rathbun of Post 179 made the opening remarks after which the colors were presented by the color guard. The Kasten Family sang the national anthem. MCPO Tim E. Strickland, Senior Instructor for NJROTC at West Ashley High School read “In Flanders Fields”, a tribute to all veterans of all wars. Captain Fred Massey, Commanding Officer of NJROTC at West Ashley High gave the keynote speech, which was fol-lowed by the placing of the wreaths. Post 179’s Honor Guard fired three rounds to honor the deceased and Taps was played. As is the custom, Chaplain Lt. Len M. Driskell gave a benediction, the colors were retrieved, and the Kasten Family closed the ceremony by singing “God Bless America”. MCPO Tim E. Strickland summed up my thoughts on this past Memorial Day, “Memorial Day is a time for us to have a moment of silence and think about the people that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom so that we may do what we like to do. Today as people are congregating in Live Oak Memorial Garden and flags are waving, I wonder if the people that are buried here, if their spirits are with us and are thanking us for taking a moment out of our day to remember them for what they did for us.”

4th Annual AMCA Southern National MeetBy: Alan Dockery & Mark Infield Us old bike guys can hardly wait for the middle of May and the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Southern National Meet. Held at Denton Farmpark for the past four years, this is a great opportunity to see, hear, touch, and smell the history of motorcycling. If you need stuff for your old bike this meet has a real old fashioned swap meet with parts instead of fashion accessories. The meet is mainly a Friday and Saturday event. Folks ride in Saturday to check out the meet and activities. Sunday is when they judge the bikes seeking national recognition. Over the past few years it seems like lots of us come for the week-end and set up camp on Friday to have more time for checking out the vendors. Camping at Denton Farmpark is nice with acres of cool, shady woods. “People continue to brag about our meet,” said Bob Aton, Meet Coordinator. “They tell me what a laid back meet it is and how much they appreciate our Southern hospitality.” For y’all who stayed home because it threatened rain, we only got a few minutes of sprinkles. That gave folks time for a lunch break before starting the afternoon activities. This year’s theme, British Bikes, was inside one of the barns out of the rain, too. AMCA events attract all kinds of bikers from us with a few old bikes to motorcycling celebrities. This year two riders who have been longtime two-wheel heroes to some of us were at Denton. Patrick Simmons, Doobie Brothers guitarist, and his wife Cris Sommer Simmons attended the Southern National Meet for the weekend. Lots of folks told about Pat hanging out with them in the campgrounds talking about old motorcycles. Cris was a hit as riders asked about her books on women in

motorcycling and the Cannonball cross-country ride. Saturday’s activities started with a ride through the country to Gold Hill. Soon after, the historic women’s club, Motor Maids (MotorMaids.org), entered the park and cruised around the grounds. One of the coolest features of the AMCA meet is the narrat-ed parade of antique motorcycles. Riders line up and wait their

turn to pull up to a spot, surrounded by folks, while each bike is described. This year Pat Simmons was the guest narrator.“How cool was it to have rock and roll royalty narrate the His-tory In Motion Parade,” said Aton. It was very cool. Past narrators have been knowledgeable of the motorcycles and done a great job in their own style. Pat being an entertainer put on a great show for us that day. He did more than read the info card about the bike and say what he liked about it. Pat gave the microphone to the owners and let them tell us about their cool old machines. Soon after the parade the crowd moved to the field games area. You should have seen the guys competing on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifts. I didn’t get the results of who won which events but when it came down to who was the Master of the Field that day Ramsey Allen held the trophy. After the games, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint and Most Cobbled. Featured guest Cris Sommers Simmons had a table set up and was selling and autographing her books “The American Motorcycle Girls 1900 to1950” (TheAmericanMotorcycle-Girls.com) and “The American Motorcycle Girl’s Cannonball Diary” (CannonballDiary.com). She was cordial and friendly as she autographed new copies and other things that people brought by. Pat Simmons was along side and very cordial as well. Later that evening in the banquet hall, BBQ Joe heaped on the pulled pork and chicken. It was so good! Cris Sommers Simmons was the keynote speaker and provided a very inter-esting slide show with her commentary. The AMCA Southern National meet has become the Caroli-nas’ event you really should attend if you are into the his-tory of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to many of the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project.


Motorcycles 35 years old are con-sidered antiques, so that now includes the imports many of us grew up riding. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons, and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing too. Many of us have fond memories of those machines. The AMCA Southern National meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques, although there are some very nice and very rare motor-cycles there. It is for you and that clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Come join us next year at Den-ton Farmpark at 1072 Cranford Road in Denton, NC. Maggie Valley Spring Rally

By: Anchor On Memorial Day weekend, the second rally of the season took place on the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. We went out on this day to enjoy a ride, good food, and good people to hang around with in Maggie Valley. The event boasted free admission with paid parking, which was $10 per person, so it was pretty much a play on words. It still cost $10 per person to enter. That in itself was not unrea-sonable, just a little confusing. When we arrived at the event we got to see a few people that love to have a great time and we visited the vendors. We ran into our good friends, Jeff & Mark, from The Moonshiners show and they were showing off their new bike that they had just gotten from Smoky Mountain Steel Horses in Waynes-ville. I was able to by some new patches for my vest and look at the “Hazard Life” cars that were on display. Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane’s cruiser, the General Lee, and Daisy’s Jeep were on site. Son Of The South played music in the afternoon and then Padlock Grin from TN played. Later in the evening the head-liner, All My Rowdy Friends, took the stage at the edge of dark and played all our favorite Hank Williams, Jr. songs until the music curfew at 10:30. By: Everette “EZ” Short Since opening for Spring Bike Week in 2002, Suck, Bang, Blow Four Corners has been a fixture in the biker com-munity, throwing some of the greatest parties on the strand. Saturday night, May 18th, the last hurrah for this treasured 40,000 square foot box of fun, went into the his-tory books. One of my personal favorite bands, Rebel Son, ferociously took the stage as the final act that ended a decade of great times that night. Indoors, blistering burnouts, scantily clad dancing women in cages, liquor fueled fun, and riding motorcycles through the bar while cracking the throttle wide open have left us with outrageous memories, while a house full of hooting and hollering fans sent the giant funhouse into the night with a glorious Hell, Yeah! With demolition set to begin June 1st, Todd Price and company managed to keep this iconic temple of good times open for one last week. All week long great bands and the unwashed masses rolled through this Goliath for one last peek at all the good times. Like many of us, this big girl had the cards stacked against her from the beginning, with both Horry County and Myrtle Beach passing laws, while the costs of doing business mounted to an unsupportable heap. Part of the problem was that she was only allowed to be open two weeks out of the entire year during rallies and the failing economy

SBB 4 Corners Goes Down In Historyleft her looking like a financially beached whale. The property has been on the market for the last five years, but was recently purchased by a company that will actually bring the building down with little fanfare. The original Suck, Bang, Blow in Murrell’s Inlet will continue the tradi-tion of beers, babes, and burnouts, with a series of great concerts all sum-mer that include Preacher Stone and other explosive

acts starting this month. Some things stay the same, but the only constant in life is change. Now we know why all those “old timers” sit around saying, “I remember when back in the day...” If you were there, now you can be that crotchety dude in the overalls saying things that mean nothing to the kids who surround him. Just like SBB Four Corners, one day we will all be in the history books. Let’s just hope we can all manage to see half as much fun in our lifetime, as she did in her short span of a decade. Raise your glass and give up a toast to this young girl, SBB 4 Corners, who was a really just one big box of fun that had to go.

Gin’s Speed Shop Grand Opening

By: Mark Infield Whenever someone in the biker com-munity launches a new business The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine wants to help insure that they get a good start. So when Jen-nifer Hendrix called us and let us know she was opening Gin’s Speed Shop we were excited for her and happy that she called us. After lots of renovations to the building and a couple of months of busi-ness under their belts fixing bikes and selling merchandise, they were ready to invite the public to their Grand Opening on Saturday, June 1st. Our local Fayetteville Full Throttle Magazine sales rep, Wendy Rogers, had to be in a wedding that day, so WildThing and I decided to ride to Fayetteville to show our support for Gin’s efforts. When we arrived the lot was full of bikes and there were vendors and a bikini bike wash out front. Inside there were coolers with ice-cold water and a table loaded with all the fixin’s for tacos. There were specials on Gin’s Speed Shop T-shirts and apparel throughout the store. Out back there were vendors and the Drag Machine, a trailer with a drag racing simulator. A bike was secured in position and just like at the drag strip, when the tree lit up, you hit the throttle. The Bob Steele Band provided the music and free Yuengling beer created a real nice bike event atmosphere. It was very comfortable! Blue Ridge H-D Celebrates Anniversaries

By: Marty Hall, Marketing Coordinator Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory, NC, recently helped Scott Fischer Enterprises celebrate their 25th Anniversa-ry as a Harley-Davidson dealer. And man did we have a party on May 25th to do so. The dealership was packed at 1PM when our final contes-tants were picked for the Dice Roll Challenge. Twenty-five lucky contestants were given the opportunity to roll the dice to have their shot at winning a $25,000 2013 Street Glide. To win the bike contestants rolled 6 dice to try and spell out the word HARLEY. Unfortunately, no one was able to roll HARLEY and win the motorcycle, but we did reward the top roller of the challenge, Richard Vanderstine, with a $500 gift card to Blue Ridge H-D for rolling the most letters. He topped the lead-erboard with 3 letters showing at the conclusion of his roll. Congratulations to all our contestants, who all went home with a great H-D goodie bag and the thrill of being part of this elite group and event! We continued the anniversary spirit the following weekend on June 1st for Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson’s 1st Anniversary Blowout Bash Bike & Car Show. We had over 60 cars and bikes register for the show. We could not have been happier with the spectator turn out for the event. All attendees had a chance to register to win 110th Anniversary Tickets by visiting the store that day. The show’s awards were determined by Peo-ple’s Choice with each spectator filling out a ballot indicating their favorite car and bike by number. We awarded plaques to the Top Ten Bikes & Top Ten Cars as well as Dealer’s Choice. Congratulations to Adrian Parker with his Harley-Davidson Sprint who won Best Of Show from the spectator ballots and the Dealer’s Choice Award as well. Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson thanks everyone who came out to both of our anniversary events. We are looking forward to another great year and thank everyone for their business over the past year.

Bikers Inside The Beltway 2013

By: Jeff Hennie, MRF VP Government Relations and Public Affairs Thursday, May 16th, 2013 was the 4th Annual Michael “Boz” Kerr Bikers Inside The Beltway event in Washington, DC. The event, sponsored by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, is a national lobby day where motorcyclists come to Capitol Hill, meet with their elected officials and brief them on all issues affecting motorcyclists at the federal level. This year’s event drew hundreds of motorcyclists from 22 states and riders met with almost 300 elected officials. One of the top issues the attendees were lobbying for, was asking members of Congress to advance two bills; HR 1861, which is a bill to prohibit Federal funding of “motorcycle only” roadside checkpoints and also HR 875, a bill that would halt the sale of E-15 fuel and conduct an independent study on the effects of the blend on internal combustion engines. During the Congressional Panel portion of the day, the group of riders gathered in a Longworth House building congres-sional meeting room to hear from a select group of members of Congress. Addressing the group was Congressmen Griffin (R-AR), the Motorcycle Safety Caucus Co Chair, Representa-tive Jeff Denham (R-CA) and the House of Representatives Highway Subcommittee Chairman and longtime MRF Cham-pion, Tom Petri (R-WI). Representative Petri had this to say, “I commend you for be-ing citizen lobbyists. We appreciate you being here in DC. We take advantage of these visits. I support your call for reliance on personal responsibility, not mandates, and your call for Federal agencies to concentrate on their mission and live up to the their responsibility.” Thanks to all who attended and to those who helped support those who attended. 3rd Annual Spring Boone Bike RallyBy: dpapabear The 3rd Annual Spring Boone Bike Rally was held May 31st through June 2nd at the High Country Fairgrounds just outside of Boone. The weather for the last 2 year’s spring and fall rally was either cold, rainy, or both and that held the numbers down some as well as the activities. However, this year Mother Nature was good to them and the crowd showed up in full sup-port with more than 2600 registered attendees. A lot of RV’s and tents came in on Thursday. And why not? The weather was great and it looked like it was going to stay that way throughout the weekend. What a weekend it was!Campers woke up to a temperature of 68º on Friday morn-ing. More campers and bikers started rolling in early for the big weekend. The JJL Band, Dice, and Problem Child kicked off the weekend. JJL was a three man band and they rocked the stage. Temperatures got up to 85º! It was GREAT riding weather. Saturday morning was a little cloudy and the wind picked up some but that didn’t stop the dunking booth (with some fine looking ladies), baby oil wrestling, burnout pit, wienie bite, tater dig, plunger games, and a wet t-shirt contest with 17 ladies going for it. I just don’t remember seeing many or much in the way of T-shirts? Just don’t know what happened to them! The lovely Leslie won the wet-T contest. She collected $250 as well as a bonus collection taken up by the admirers.

The participation was really awesome and fun with a lot of laughs. Most of the contest winners collected a prize of $250 except for the burnout winner, who got a new tire and it was installed as well. The slow race winner was David who looked like his bike was just standing still most of the time. David is good at that event and made it look easy. John and Tina Luther were the potato in the haystack winners. I think Tina was at home rolling around in the hay! My apologies to the winners of the other events. I lost my notes with your names, but hope we got all of you in the pics! There was also a 50/50 drawing, which produced $1350 for the lucky ticket holder, Bob, from Princeton, WV and $1350 was divided between The Boone Chapter of the CMA and the High Country Toy Run, which will be held this year on Octo-ber 5th, starting at the Boone Mall at 9 am. Did I mention that there were vendors around the upper field? Saturday, The Part Time Blues Band kicked off the evening followed by Pinetop Lighting featuring D.B. Bryant, and Throwdown Jones closed out the night. The activities were wide open with plenty of goings on during the rally hours. In the camping area during the after-hours it was party, party, party, and they did that till the wee hours of the morning, sleep a little, and do it again. I think you know what I mean! There were plenty of ladies lookin’ for the beads! Sunday was a different story. Campers and bikers were pull-ing out in the rain, but it was still a great weekend. I met a lot of new friends who acted as if we had known each other forever. There weren’t many strangers around there. There was plenty of beer, food, and great companionship. People just take you right in as if you were there best bud! And THANKS to all of you that looked after the “Full Throttle Mag” guy and made me feel right at home! Mark your calendars and make it a point to help them out for that, a very worthy cause. There are a lot of children all across 828-733-8060

Ray Price Akea Express Drag Racing Team Is Runner Up In Atlanta

By: Sarah Hager The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team traveled to Geor-gia’s Atlanta Dragway for the 33rd Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals on the weekend of May 3-5 and came back with the runner up title after a weekend of close runs. Traction at Atlanta Dragway was marginal and was requir-ing everyone to adjust their tune up. The bike unfortunately spun the tire in the first qualifying round. In the second round the transmission broke on the starting line at the hit of the throttle. That put the team on the outside looking in with just one round of qualifying left and a transmission that needed to be repaired. The team jumped to the task, making the repairs and necessary maintenance in time for the last round. The bike performed great on the run and Tommy Grimes rode it to a run of 6.428 seconds at 223.36 MPH. That put the team qualifying in the number three spot for Sunday’s race. Grimes won the first round of eliminations Sunday with a pass of 6.477 seconds at 219.47 MPH over Steve Dorn’s 6.595 seconds at 210.24 MPH. Keeping the momentum going, he then won the second round, running 6.444 seconds at 219.54 MPH against Joey Sternotti’s 6.463 seconds at 210.65 MPH, placing him in the finals against Douglas Horne. On the final run Grimes had a reaction time of 0.036 and a

pass of 6.528 seconds at 218.97 MPH to Horne’s reaction of .030 and a pass of 6.517 at 220.91 MPH. “The final run was separated by 17 thousandths of a sec-ond,” Ray Price said. “We’re happy to have done so well, especially with the struggles in qualifying. I’m so very proud of our team. Jeremy, Justin, Mark and Tommy all jump right in and work their butts off to complete whatever tasks need to be done, to try and conquer the many obstacles that racing can throw at a team. Tommy continues to improve on his reaction times and is really riding and handling the bike very well. Story by David FraleyPhoto by Alan Dockery Rolling Thunder North Carolina Chapter #2 held their 5th Annual Gerald Harkey Car and Bike Show and Poker Run June 8th at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC. Gerald Harkey was an active member from 2003 until his sudden unexpected death in 2008. He was one of the organizers of the first event and was working on it at the time of his death in 2008. The first event was put on in 2009 and it was decided by our chapter to do this in his memory. Steve Wiederkehr won 1st Place Custom with his 2008 Big Dog Mastiff. Roger “R.C.” Foster took 1st Place in Vintage and Peoples’ Choice. The turnout was a little low this year because of the weather and several other events in the area, but was still a suc-cess thanks to our many sponsors. A special thanks to Tilley Harley-Davidson for their continued support and allowing us to hold the event in their parking lot. Rolling Thunder North Carolina Chapter #2 was formed in 1995 in Troutman, NC, and meets the first Sunday of each month at the American Legion Building on Hwy. 21 in Troutman. Patriot Rovers - A Healing Mission Roughly 300,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, or nearly 20 percent of returning forces, are likely to suffer from either posttraumatic stress disorder or major depression. Another 320,000 returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan may have experienced traumatic brain injuries during deploy-ment. On average, 18 veterans commit suicide every day, 126 per week, 6552 per year according to the Department of Veter-ans Affairs. In 2010, to help returning veterans cope with life back home, an Army veteran who is an Canine Behavioral Expert created Patriot Rovers, a nonprofit in High Point, NC that trains Golden Retrievers as psychiatric service dogs and pairs them with qualified veterans free of charge. Patriot Rovers has placed 55 dogs, mainly in North Carolina, and expects to place 20 service dogs this year. Founded by David R. Cantara and U.S. Army Maj. Robert Stillwell, who serve as its board’s co-chairs, Patriot Rovers raises golden pups, many of which are rescues, trains them, pro-vides veterinary care, pairs them with veterans who complete a 120 hour training program, and then are evaluated for gradu-ation. This part of the mission helps the veterans and the dogs adjust to one another while gaining knowledge and the skills necessary for a successful lifetime partnership with a Service Dog. The dogs are trained to perform “service dog tasks” such as medication reminders, tactile interruption for panic, anxiety or night terrors, item retrieval, helping with balance, bracing, and

wheel chair assistance. Veterans in our program apply via our website or come as referrals through the Veterans Administration Psychiatric Ser-vices, SIPU, or Poly Trauma Units. Part of this healing mission is to love, respect, and support America’s Gold Star Families. Each certified Patriot Rover is named and dedicated to fallen servicemen or women, with permission/participation of Gold Star Families. Patriot Rovers counts on Grants, Individual Donations and Corporate Sponsorships annually to fund this healing mission. The cost of each placement start to finish is Approximately $11,800. Riders’ Roost 23rd Anniversary Party

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Spring took a long time getting rid of wet and cold weekends this year. So it sure was great to see lots of bikers enjoying the decent weather for Memorial Day Weekend at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, for the 23rd Anniversary Party. Even if the nights were a little chilly, hanging out with old friends around the campfire is a good way to stay warm. A big thanks to the Over The Mountain Boys who were cooking some good food all weekend. The anniversary party is the first time up to The Roost for the season for some folks, so Friday is spent with old friends from all over the area. A cold beer and helping setting up your site is always welcome soon after you ride in and it is also a good way to make new friends. Friday night Dave fired up the music and karaoke in the game room. It’s kinda funny watching some of my friends sing and dance. Most are as bad as I am. After the music died down we sat around the campfire catching up on where folks had been riding lately and what old bikes they had bought. The weather was just about perfect for the weekend. A little too chilly to get in the creek, which was up and running fast anyway. I made one butt-chilling pass on a float. Saturday about sundown folks gathered near the flagpole for a Memorial Day ceremony honoring our military veterans. That night the Contagious Blues Band entertained us with some grooving and rocking tunes under a full moon. There are still a few parties planned for the rest of the sum-mer, so check out the schedule and come join us.

F.O.O.L.S. Inaugural Run

By: “Old Spook” Dave Alley, a firefighter from the Summerville Fire De-partment organized this benefit on June 8th, 2013 for the firefighters fund to aid the family members of fallen and injured firemen. F.O.O.L.S. is acronym for Fraternal Order Of Leatherhead Society. In the good old days, firemen wore leather helmets. It was fortuitous that Dave organized this run since only this past Saturday, a drunken driver ran his car into the scene of an accident near Ashley Phosphate Road and injured a first responder who had been called out to help the accident victim. As most of us are aware Insurance only covers so much. These funds will go directly to that fireman’s family. Thankfully the weather was great. We started at The Main Street Bar and Grill in Summerville, headed out to Cat Daddy’s, Minky’s, and back to the Main Street Bar and Grill for eats. Lt. Matthew Snyder wore his red fireman’s hat and was sell-ing 50/50 tickets. The winner of $173 gave back the money to the cause. In all, the group raised $1300 that immediately went to the injured fireman. Personally, I can’t do enough for our firemen, police, and veterans. They have their jobs but those jobs are self-effacing and critically serve the public. Unfortunately many of our politicians today have not served in these capacities and seem to take these men and women for granted. It seems sad that it takes something like 9/11 to focus on what these men and women do.

This year’s ride started with a sponsored welcome dinner at Low Country Harley-Davidson in Charleston, SC in the late afternoon and evening of May 14th. The ride left from Low Country Harley-Davidson on the morning of May 15th. The itinerary called for a stop for lunch at Savannah Harley-Davidson and then ride on to Golden Isles

3rd Annual Vintage Motorcycle Kickstart Classic Ride

Harley-Davidson in Brunswick, GA for a welcome Bike Night dinner. On May 16th the ride departed from Golden Isles H-D and rode to Jacksonville, FL for a sponsored lunch at Adamec Harley-Davidson. After lunch they rode to St. Augustine, FL where the ride ended the day before the 14th Annual Riding Into History events started at World Golf Village. American Iron Magazine Editor, Buzz Kanter and Wheels Through Time Museum Curator, Dale Walksler rode The Kickstart Classic to St. Augustine to be the Grand Marshals for the 2013 Riding Into History event. Riding Into His-tory™ (RIH) is a world class Vintage Motorcycle Concours d’Elegance. This competition attracts between 300 and 400 antique and vintage motorcycles each year. Collectors from all over America bring their motorcycles to the show, and they are displayed around the lake, which forms the centerpiece of the World Golf Village. RIH is a 501(c)3 organization that has contributed over $250,000 to charities. RIH has no paid staff, and all duties are performed by volunteers. The chosen charity for 2013 is The Wounded Warrior Project. The next Kickstart Classic will be leave out of Moroney’s Harley-Davidson in Newburgh, NY on September 27th bound for The Pewter Run in Concord NH on the 29th.

Lincolnton Hog Happinin’ 2013By: Mark “Stretch” Carlyle June 7th and 8th was the time to turn the town of Lincoln-ton, NC into a bike rally. As Tropical Storm Andrea threw its storms and rain at us during the day, we weren’t sure if Friday night would be a total wash out or not. The rains moved out for the most part in the early evening. As we got the first band, Papa Mojo, on the main stage, the rains came, and I mean it rained hard. People ran for the beer garden tents and started drinking. The rains left and Molly Hatchet took the stage rockin’ the town as hard as it rained. While Molly Hatchet rocked on the rains came back with a vengeance. The crowd could care less. It was Molly Hatchet! After the show, I had the chance to speak with Phil McCormack (Lead Singer) & Shawn Beamer (Drummer). They couldn’t believe the crowd stayed throughout the downpours. They were sincerely grate-ful to the crowd for staying in those conditions. Saturday began with a 75-mile poker run with an untold number of bikes from all over the area. All proceeds went to the USO of NC. There were bike shows for different classes. Here’s how they fared: Dresser: Brian Rhom. Radical: Phillip Franklin. Antique: Willie Vaughn. Custom: Tome Peak. Cruiser: Ray Milsaps. Trike: Sherrie Holden. Best of Show: Brian Rhom. Peoples Choice: Willie Vaughn. The Bar B-Q competition had many competitors from all

around. Here are the rankings. 1.) J&Bs BBQ, 2.) Pork U, 3.) BBQ Knights, 4.) Wood Hoss BBQ, 5.) Fat Baby Barbecue, 6.) Thunderbutt BBQ, 7.) Thanks You For Smoking, 8.) Ole Redneck Boys BBQ, 9.) Banchee BBQ, 10.) K&A Perry’s BBQ. Later in the day on Saturday over at Iron Station Thunder on E. Water Street is where you could find your lost husbands and boyfriends. It was time for the USO Bikini Contest. The bikinis came out, with about 15 beautiful ladies, and a couple of drunk guys that just wanted to be in line with them! Eventu-ally, the ladies won out. There was also a 50/50 drawing for the USO. All the money went back to the USO as the winner gave their half back! Also at Iron Station Thunder Brian (aka Rocket) had the burnout contest with 7 contestants. The smoke filled E. Water Street. Tires blew and the winner’s bike even caught fire! The trophy went to Phillip Hunneycutt. Iron Station Thunder also sponsored a scavenger hunt to raise money for Lincoln County Fire Fighters Burned Children’s Fund. There were 8 game pieces you had to go and find from business all around Lincoln County. Tickets were sold at $20 each. One name from the ones who finished the course would win $1000. There were only 6 people who finished the scavenger hunt. The winner was Eve Schaffer. The rest of the money raised totaling $2510 went to the Fire Fighters Burned Children’s Fund. I will say that the crowd, somewhere around 1000 people, was at Iron Station Thunder from about 1:30pm until 6pm on Saturday. In between the give a ways and the bikinis, stunt rider Ryan Lanier from Jacksonville, NC kept the people on their toes with the stunts. Hats off to Ryan. He’s got more balls than most of us! I will say all in all Iron Station Thunder, Vyzion Internet Radio had it going on. They totally Rocked E. Water Street all day! My hat’s off to Brian owner of Iron Station Thunder and Greg with Vyzion Radio! This was the best Hog Happenin’ in many years! Way to go Guys!

By: Everette “EZ” Short On Wednesday, May 15th, the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally got into high gear when The Swingbridge Saloon hosted their annual Wall-to-Wall Big Time Welcome Home Party. Judging from the turnout at this mega shindig, the number of bikers attending the rally this year went through the roof. The park-ing lots in all directions were filled early in the day and it was packed on the Karaoke Bob Tiki Hut dance floor. There was no lack of singers and all the dancing hoopla mayhem that we’ve come to expect. With 70º + temps and the magnificent Carolina

Living Large At The Swingbridge Saloonblue skies stretched out above us, bikers of all ages were enjoy-ing the crowd and that delicious smell of Dem Boyz BBQN that just kept wafting through the air all afternoon. Even be-fore the sun started going down, the party was kickin’ big time with motorcycles coming in from all directions. Since I was born here in the south, I’ve tasted about all the BBQ that exists from everywhere in these great states and especially in North and South Carolina. By the time Dem Boyz finally served up plates with all the fixings, I have no hesitation in telling you that it was the best BBQ and ribs I have ever had the pleasure to slurp on. These guys have locations in NC and GA (www.DemBoyzBBQN.com), but they’ve come to throw down with Jeff Long’s Welcome Party for the last three years and I picked up a terrible addiction to their fall off the bone ribs. I still wake up smelling that sweet hickory smoke and sticky sauce in my dreams. With a line of slobbering guests that stretched all the way through the entire back lot, even Jackie and Jeff stood at the plate and served up the slaw. As always, there were butt-slapping capers and big hee-haw laugh-ing escapades going on all over The Swingbridge Saloon until the food got to everyone’s fork. Then, it got real quiet, while the sound for plastic sporks slapping and smacking lips took the place of revelry. Eventually, the sounds returned to deafening levels and a lot of leather clad tire burners jetted out in what I assume was an attempt to take a nap and regroup for a long night of madness that lay ahead. Right around dark, the big crowd of high dollar steel and full bodied, leathered and laced up showgirls began to roll up to show their stuff on the pavement. It was a crazy night of shots, beers, and stiff mixed drinks that included some pretty wild women dancing in abandon to the sound of The Samson-ics far into the wee hours of Thursday morning. By the time last call came around it was standing room only in every part and parking lot of the legendary hot spot that is The Swing-bridge Saloon. Jeff Long throws one hell of a party that just kept going throughout the entire week of the Spring Rally and SBS will keep it going throughout the summer, on any night when the weather holds and the bikes on are the blacktop. The wait staff and bartenders were all so wonderful that it’s hard to remember that they don’t really love you, even though continuously tell us that they do. Jeff and his crew have been hosting this party for the last ten years and each year it just gets better. Come by The Swingbridge Saloon at 4355 Sea Mountain Hwy in Little River, SC when you’re in town and remember that they feature live bands every weekend night throughout the summer. The Rally is over now, but I was there when we all said our goodbyes over some sweet Bloody Mary cocktails before hitting the road back to reality. Every day at the beach is a great day, but stopping by SBS for a hug and a drink is a fantastic way to say Aloha among a few hundred of your new and old best friends. Thanks to everyone who showed up and a hearty “What was that all about?” to all 7 of the people who sat starring while the rest of us were having fun.

The 1st Annual Goat Ride And Cancer Benefit

By: Everette “EZ” Short Unless you live with a tribe of tech-no-challenged ab-originals that refuse to worship at the alter of reality television, then you’ve prob-ably seen the “Full Throttle Saloon” real-ity show on TRU TV. The show focuses on the world’s largest biker bar, sprawled across 30 acres in Sturgis, SD. These hour long ditties follow the she-nanigans of Michael Ballard (bar owner) and his gorgeous wife Angie, lead singer Jesse James Dupree from the band Jackyl, and a wide crew of miscreants such as The Flaunt Girls, a leprechaun and big-hearted emcee named Gregg “Goat” Cook. Lucky for us, it just so happens that Goat seems unchanged by his newfound celebrity status. This year, FTS brought their motley crew to The House Of Blues in North Myrtle Beach for the Spring Rally, where they hosted several great concerts and launched the first ever Goat Ride and Cancer Benefit on May 15th. From the looks of the turnout, FTS has a lot of devoted fans. With kickstands up at noon, we left the House Of Blues with “Goat” lead-ing some 300+ motorcycles down south through snarled traffic and boisterous women yelling “GOAT! GOAT! GOAT!” as we headed towards the newly re-opened Marlin’s Quay Bar. Once there, Marty (a local celebrity in her own right) welcomed us to a world of opulence by the marina for some tasty bites and cold drinks, while the truly rich stared at us from aboard golf carts and yachts bigger than most mobile homes. Soon enough, we headed off to find The Rockin’ Hard Saloon in a fully packed Murrell’s Inlet. We spilled through several parking lots, while eagerly offending the local militia by disregarding their advice on traffic procedures. Kathy was gracious,

as always, and had a great staff waiting for us when we got there. Meanwhile, Goat was busy posing for pictures with anyone who asked. Good for you Goat! In the middle of a circus on the south end, we were quick to saddle up and head into Myrtle Beach proper (yes, 300+ bikes actually went into Myrtle Beach) to take over Donny’s Steel Horse Saloon on 3rd Avenue South. Donny’s bartenders and staff were overwhelmed, but they severed ‘em up with gusto and a smile. After a big group shot, we headed back to The House Of Blues where the band Low Life greeted us with some wicked tunes and drinks on the back deck. The disorder lasted well into the morning for most of us. Special thanks go out to the club members who risked being ticketed by the MBPD when they stopped traffic for us and several cases of harassment from “Blue Hairs” shouting curses along the way. Will Myrtle Beach ever learn? Ask the Mayor. In the end, The 1st Annual Goat Ride And Cancer Benefit raised over $3000 for the cause, with a promise of an even bigger ride next year. There were no incidents, no accidents, no arguments and only a couple of push starts. The weather was wondrous, despite what the weather-man had to say that morning, too. Oh yeah and kudos to “Throttle Girl” who made us all look better riding alongside her. If you rode with us, then you know how it feels to be a celebrity, because you is one. There was no better way to spend one hell of a day than with a nearly famous Goat.

Stars & Bars Tavern Grand Opening PartyBy: Charles Holcombe aka Uwharrie Charlie Salisbury, NC was the place to be on Saturday, June 1st at the grand opening for Stars & Bars Tavern. This once drab saloon has been transformed into a friendly neighborhood tavern open for anyone that has a thirst! Tim and Crystal Rogers have spent much time and effort preparing this biker-friendly tavern for its grand opening day. The inside has been remodeled from the floor to the ceiling including plumbing and outdoor renovations as well. They have two pool tables with weekly tournaments, a new side bar for seating, a new heat & air system, and Wi-Fi. There is a band shelter in the rear as well as parking and camping, a fire pit, and an outside bar! The showers are under renovation and will be fully functional and private any day now. Today is also the birthday of tavern owner, Tim Rogers. Some of the crowd began riding in around 1pm and they just kept coming. The first band by Rock University was beginning to play around 2pm and what an impression these youngsters made on the crowd. They were better than some paid bands I’ve seen, really! Also beginning in the afternoon was a free fish fry with some great hushpuppies and coleslaw while it lasted. Nub, with Dead Donkey Customs was manning the outdoor bar. Vendors such as Jennifer’s Leather and Old School Shade’s were on hand with some really neat product. DJ Bossman, owner of Harley Radio, was seen roving the crowd as campers were set-ting up tents in the lower area. Tim and Crystal, along with the rest of the staff, were great hosts for the event, which consisted of friends, family, and a lot of patrons. When the Grand Opening birthday cake was brought out for Tim to blow out the candles he had no prob-lem doing so. Well, there were only two candles on it? I heard someone say that if there were 57 candles, as should be, that it may have started a forest fire! The bonfire got started near dusk as the party played on and Jason Rimmer took the stage to entertain for the rest of the evening. Jason is a solo acoustic musician for hire and per-forms at most any event you can think of. Thank you Stars & Bars Tavern for putting on a great party! Hunter’s Helping Kids Ride

By: Angie Neal There are many reasons to get out and ride, but a great ex-cuse to straddle that bike is the annual Hunter’s Helping Kids Ride. This year’s annual spring benefit ride on April 27th was a greater success than last year. When you have bikers and hunt-ers together for such a wonderful charity, hearts and wallets are opened up to try to fulfill those children’s dream of a once in a lifetime hunt. The ride began at Crossroads Tavern in Gibsonville, NC. Registration started at 10 am. The final count was double from last year. Tracy Long did a fantastic job in mapping out the ride and leading everyone on an enjoyable, pleasurable ride from Crossroads Tavern, Cat’s, Summers, It’ll Do, Lucky’s, and then back to Crossroads Tavern. Arriving back, Dot and Tommy Brown, Martha and Randall Brady, Tracy Meeks, and Teresa Harris had all the food set up for the hungry riders. After eating too much, everyone gathered for the door prizes to be given away and the 50/50 drawing, along with the silent auction. Thanks to all the businesses, Danville Wild Wings, Cross-roads Tavern, Cat’s, It’ll Do, and Lucky’s for their generosity and support to help raise the money for this charity and mak-ing the ride a big success. All the money raised is used to send a minimum of 10 kids to participate in the Ultimate Kids Hunt. These children receive a rifle with a scope, a full set of camo clothes, boots, and bag full of hunting accessories, a paid hunting license, and food and lodging for their accompanying family member. Chastity’s Ride

By: Hss Chastity’s Ride was held June 8th at Crossfire UMC in Wilkesboro, NC. It had to be a nasty start for the day, overcast with predictions of rain and thunderstorms. Brave souls ven-tured out to support Make-A-Wish and were greeted warmly with sunshine breaking through the clouds, good music, and a nice ride through the county. Venturing out paid off for the 25+ bikes and their riders. Great barbeque, cake and pie awaited the riders back at Cross-fire UMC. The Crossfire Band with CJ Ballard cranked it up across the hillsides of Wilkes County throughout the day. The weather turned from warm and sunny to hot and humid quite quickly. The big draw was the door prizes donated by Crossroads

H-D, and the many shops and businesses from across Wilkes County. Riding helmets, chaps, gift certificates and a variety of leather goods were handed out through the day. The door prizes amazed people, though the variety of donors was amaz-ing - from haircuts to dog grooming, to toolboxes and comput-er add-ons. The folks and the businesses of Wilkes really show their support for Make-A-Wish. Thanks to all of you. There are way too many to list. The Red Knights and Hillbilly’s MC get a “thank you” for sup-porting Crossfire and Make-A-Wish. These bikers are always supporting “the good cause”. Thanks go out to Make-A-Wish as well. Julia Dilliard Benefit

By: Jeanie Hood Carter In January 2013 a young female rider, Julia Dillard, had a pickup truck pull out in front of her while traveling home in Fayetteville, NC after work. She suffered multiple broken bones, 7 pelvic fractures, and lost a few front teeth. Two months later, after being out of work with no income, Julia, a single mom still recuperating from her injuries, needed help. She contacted Bikers For Bikers Foundation and applied for help. A benefit fundraiser was set for April 15th at Lost Memo-ries in Spring Lake, NC. Approximately 40 riders showed to support this lady vet who spent 6 years in the 82nd Airborne. With a number of military and ex military on board with BFBF, the foundation’s mili-tary members showed full support of Julia as well as a few ex military who came that weren’t members. The run had 3 stops including J&J’s Tavern, The Dog House, and Legends Pub. Julia, as well as her 12-year-old daughter, Sam, was deter-mined to ride in her benefit. Due to suffering 7 pelvic frac-tures, Julia couldn’t lift her leg high enough to climb aboard when she tried to get on the back of a full sized bike. Cari Pfau offered to ride Julia on her sporty. Determined to ride, Julia managed to get on the bike with cane in hand and a brace. She rode! Sam rode behind one of the men and everyone was off. This lady is one tough cookie and doesn’t let anything stop her! After the ride it was back to Lost Memories in Spring Lake for some chilidogs, and a fantastic chicken casserole donated by a member. Mickey still talks about that casserole! There was a raffle, and prizes afterwards and some well-needed funds raised to help Julia with her bills. Julia’s bike was her only transportation. A donor has prom-ised a bike replacement, however to date Julia is still without. BFBF is looking at the possibility of repairing Julia’s bike until a replacement is possible. 1st Annual Benefit For Ralph “Frog” Ellington, Jr.

By: Billy R. Britt We started the morn-ing off with registration at 10am at The Main Street City Tavern in Creedmoor, NC. Later we gathered up inside for a safety meeting and mounted up about 11:15am and proceeded through Creedmoor into the Butner area and rode by the accident site. Then we rode through the countryside to the Munchin’ Marvin’s Bar & Grill in the commu-nity of Berea in Gran-ville County for a butt break and beverages. We mounted up about 12:45 and proceeded back into the Oxford area, traveling down Hwy 15N into the Bullock area and the back roads to the Kerr Lake. The final destination was the Kerr Lake Country Club where we sat around listening to music and cooling off with beverages. We had a hot dog and hamburger lunch with all the trim-mings provided by the Iron Order MC local chapter of Creedmoor. We picked door prizes and later picked our 50/50 winner, who gave all the winnings back to the IOMC. All money raised by registering fees, T-shirt purchases, 50/50 tickets and all beverage donations were compiled to be given to Ralph Ellington Jr.’s daughter “Torrie”. This marks the 1st Annual “Ride for Ralph” Memorial Ride. Iron Order MC advised me that this would be an annual event to help sup-port his daughter until she was out of school. Ralph’s daughter is 8 years old, so I see at least 10-14 years of these events to come. To wrap it up, it was a great day with great folks and awe-some fellowship. I’ve often been asked, ‘What do you old folks do now that you’re retired?’ Well. I’m fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and mar-garitas into urine.

A Catholic Priest, a Baptist Preacher and a Rabbi all served as Chaplains to the students of Northern Michigan University at Mar-quette in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Bishop is coming out next week to give him first communion and confirma-tion.’” Reverend Billy Bob spoke next. He was in a wheelchair, had one arm and both legs in casts, and had an IV drip. In his best fire-and-brimstone oratory, he exclaimed, “Well, brothers, you know that we Baptists don’t sprinkle! I went out and I found me a bear. And then I began to read to my bear from God’s Holy Word! But that bear wanted nothing to do with me. So I took hold of him and we began to wrestle. We wrestled down one hill, up another and down another until we came to a creek. So I quickly dunked him and baptized his hairy soul. And just like you said, he became as gentle as a lamb. We spent the rest of the day praising Jesus. Hal-lelujah!” The Priest and the Reverend both

It was his first time visiting his doctor for a colonoscopy. The doctor’s new blond nurse, Evelyn, took him to an examining room. She instructed him to get undressed and have a seat until the doctor could see him. She said that the doctor would only be a few minutes. After putting on the gown that she gave him, he sat down. While wait-ing, he observed there were three items on a stand next to the exam table: a tube of K-Y jelly, a rubber glove, and a beer. When the doctor finally came in he said, “Look, Doc, I’m a little confused. This is my first exam. I know what the K-Y is for, and I know what the glove is for, but can you tell me what the beer is for?” At that, the doctor became noticeably outraged and stormed over to the door. He flung the door open and yelled to his new blonde nurse, “Damn it, Evelyn!” “I said a Butt Light”.


Steve opened this bar to share his heart and dreams with us just in time for Spring Bike Week three short years ago, but that seems like a lifetime ago. This is a year around good time wa-tering hole with a pool table and a good jukebox where both country and western songs are playing with the latest and the greatest hits. There’s an old wood floor in this relatively new bar with bike tire burnout marks across the middle of it from when the party got a little too wild, but there’s rarely a ruckus and smiles for miles when you walk through the door. Next time you’re in town, come out to Harley’s Roadhouse at the end of Highway #31, where it meets #9 in Little River, SC and feel like you’ve known everyone there for the rest of your life. If it helps, you can go out in the yard to be outstand-ing in the field, while you give Wilbur The Wonderpig your best Oink! The Big Wing Ding Rocking Hoe DownBy: Everette “EZ” Short The weatherman’s warnings didn’t stop the all day long party at Harley’s Roadhouse on Saturday, May 18th to cap off Spring Beach Bike Week 2013. There was food, fun, games and a lot of friends from yesteryear that showed up for an end of the week Hoe Down good time. Steve Price knows how to make girls dance on a light pole and so they did. The outside bar was packed when we rolled in and the crowds rolled through until well into Saturday morning. The pig pickin’ and all the fixin’s helped stabilize all the adult beverages and everyone who rolled through the new covered bridge was full of smiles both coming and going. The newly raised covered bridge is a cool swash of red paint and nostalgia that takes you back to a time gone by on this 22 acre field of dreams. It makes everyone laugh when you ride your sled to the end and see the sign that says “Pedestrians Only!” as you exit. The band was great and the dancing spilled from the floor, to the top of the bar and out into the grassy field where dazzling steel horses waited all in a row. The people who come here make this a special place. I have been coming to Myrtle Beach Bike Week for almost 20 years, but have yet to see so many people that have become like family gathering under one roof, or standing in a field to await the lighting of the bon fire, while the band inside stirs the soul across those old wooden floors.

Becky’s RideBy: Anchor On June 1st my wife and I had the honor of participating in a ride that can show you the true meaning of love and support for a family member from friends and family! Becky was di-agnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer about a year ago. When they did the scans they found the tumor and tried to have it removed. The surgery went well, but when they went to rerun her scans they found 6 more tumors that reemerged and became very aggressive. In turn, this resulted in large medical bills and that is why they set up this event to raise the money needed for the family. The ride started at 10am at the Mountain Energy Station, where Becky’s sister, Jerri Owens, was giving the first card and the ride info for each area. This ride was a “at your leisure ride” which means each person got to go at his or own pace this allowed everyone to enjoy the day without a rush. The 2nd stop was at the Uncle Bill’s flea market manned by Becky’s mother, Carolyn, and her daughter, Lily. We got a chance to talk to them about Becky and both told me that all they wanted was for her to get better and what a wonderful mother she is and to make sure everyone knew how thankful they were for all the help they received for her! The 3rd stop was set up with Sue and Patsy at Cherokee Harley-Davidson. The ride continued to the leather shack and Bronwen and Sharon gave us our fourth card. Then we headed to the Elks Lodge where the main festivities were located. Jen-nifer manned the last table and took in the card sheets and ran the silent auction that was full of great items to win! While at the Elks Lodge, people got to eat some great BBQ and enjoyed the music being performed by SmokeRise. Now this band can get into their music. They were full of energy as well as good to listen to. They played cover songs as well as their own original music. This event was a success for the family as well as getting

together with friends on an absolutely beautiful day for riding! All the family that was involved in this benefit wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped in a small or large way. They also wanted to say enjoy your family and friends and God bless all people! I regret to report that Becky went to be with Jesus on Satur-day, June 15. I wish she could have read about this event and how many people cared about her. I guess she knows now and is in perfect health. Our sympathies go out to her family and friends. AMRA Mason Dixon NationalsStory and photo by Alan Dockery The first weekend of June, I headed up to Mason Dixon Dragway in Maryland for the American Motorcycle Racing Association’s All Harley Drags. This is the association that will be sanctioning the Harley drag races at Rockingham the weekend of October 12-13. I was glad to see a good turnout of racers and more Carolina teams racing with them. Mason Dixon Dragway is one of those old country dragstrips that still runs a quarter mile, but ain’t as long as some strips so the two fastest nitro classes didn’t run. There were still several Pro Fuel machines to give fans a good dose of nitro fumes in the air. And since my buddies are gas class racers, we had a great time at the strip and they put on a show. Rain on Sunday afternoon ended things before some of the final rounds, so they didn’t get to the winners’ circle. Dale Nilles, Purlear, NC, seems to be dominating the carbureted, single-speed nitro class this year at events across the country, having won a couple Wallys at NHRA divisional races. He qualified number one in AMRA Pro Fuel and went on to win the class. In the Top Eliminator 9.30 second index class, Keith Rich-ner, Moore, SC, qualified fourth. Greg Best, Raleigh, NC, rode the old Shovelhead in the Super Gas 9.90 class. Richner was also a competitor in Super Pro running on a 10.30 index with Chris Wood from Goldsboro, NC. Wood ran just a little too quick to qualify in the Pro Eliminator 10.90 class. The Street Eliminator 11.50 class had Jeremy Abbott, Con-over, NC, and Best in the field. Mike Motto, Jacksonville, NC, made it to the final round of Outlaw Street. Motto also ran in Hot Street with Dickie Johnson from Aynor, SC. In the Eliminator dial-in class David Herndon, Valdese, NC, looked good on the Down and Dirty dresser. Wood and Abbott also competed in Eliminator. This was a busy weekend for Marty and Jayne VandenHeu-vel who run the AMRA. Jayne was busy at the tech trailer

Mods vs RockersBy: Mark Carlyle On Saturday, June 1st, Pabst Blue Ribbon and National Bo-hemian Beer (Natty Boh) presented The 2013 Mods vs Rockers to pay homage to the two conflicting British youth subcultures of the 50’s and 60’s at the Chop Shop in the NoDa area of Charlotte, NC. The Chop Shop is mostly known as a music venue featuring many different styles of music, but on Saturday they had an antique bike and scooter show featuring many antique and remodeled bikes and scooters, some from the early days of the 1900’s right up to today. As my friend and I were riding to the show, we saw quite a few old Hondas and Triumphs on their way riding to the show. Not very many were trailered in. When we arrived there were about 200 different makes and models: Harleys, Triumphs, Hondas, anything with 2 wheels. Several had come from dif-ferent states, 5 or 6 hours away. I give the Chop Shop kudo’s for the many things they

had going on that day. Many venders of leathers, parts, and accessories were on site as well as great food and a lot of cold beer. The music ranged from Folk to modern rock played on everything from fiddles to stand up basses. Hell, they even had a burlesque show later that night! I’m looking forward to next year’s show on the weekend following Memorial Day, which I was assured by the owner, Jay, would be much bigger and better! To learn more about Mods-

By: Scott Wicker There’s no doubt that the weather played a BIG part in the success of the 2013 Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Rally. The weather was absolutely perfect! I’m amazed how much the local hotels and restaurants have really rallied to try and earn back the business from the biker community despite the local political efforts in the past to presumably stop one of the old-est gatherings in motorcycle history. Are the numbers there that were prevalent 8 years ago? No, but they appear to be getting better, I’d say. The crowd at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson was big-ger than in years past. Parking at the dealership on the south end was hard to find. A number of vendors arrived earlier than usual and that always seems to be a big draw there. The dealership on the north end always has all the other stores’ motorcycle inventory for sale and rumor has it, sales were go-ing along very well. Some businesses that were the go to places in the past seem to have lost a little bit of flare while others were booming. Some have fallen completely by the wayside and closed their doors. New ideas and better planning? Some probably chose to do a little more advertising! Get it! We noticed there seemed to be a lot more emphasis on entertainment at most establish-ments and that always draws a crowd. The Swing Bridge Saloon up in Little River had a full line up of entertainment all week long despite the normally high number of people that migrate there in the evening hours. I had the opportunity to make a very enjoyable ride up to Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte. It is located a little ways up 17 towards Wilmington, but they had very good crowds in and out there all day, despite not being in Myrtle Beach. I did not see the local law enforcement stopping those on mo-torcycles like in the past. However, there were a few reports of motorcycle thefts in the area that didn’t make for a good

week for some. Some friends here in the Burlington area had to purchase a new bike so they could get home. Despite the events in the past few years, helmet laws and loud pipe ordinances, the number of people coming to Myrtle Beach for the rallies, spring and fall, I feel have increased. Some people are going to go no matter what. Others have chosen to stay away. Some say they will never go back again even for normal vacations. For some, time heals all wounds. Despite everyone’s opinion and feelings, it is a time and place to meet up with old friends and to get to know those we would normally would not. For some, it’s all about the motorcycles. It never fails, when we are out and about and going from place to place, you always see someone you’ve met there before and remembers your name and that you work for the #1 motor-cycle publication in the nation, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine! East Cooper Firehouse Poker Run

By: “Old Spook” John Evans inaugurated this run with the support of the fire houses scattered around the area east of the Cooper River. John’s organization is an amalgamation of non commissioned officers, either retired or on active duty. The organization is called “Marion Marauder’s Society” and was founded in 1949. General Pinckney of the Citadel awarded that name to the group and it was formed from Head-quarters Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry. When the unit moved to Mt. Pleasant, the organization moved with it and remains here to this day. This run is the organization’s effort to give back to their community of Mount Pleasant. The benefit was for Carolina Children’s Charities, a favorite charity of the local fire depart-ments, whose various fire stations served as stops on the run. The Marauder’s joined in this effort to support local families rather than “national” charities. The money that they raise stays in the community. Sliding Sideways - Flattrack Motorcycle Races At Woodleaf Speedway

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Y’all know I love little, ole country racetracks. Well folks, I’ve found a cool one and they race motorcycles once a month. Woodleaf Speedway near Woodleaf, NC, has Saturday night flattrack motorcycle racing. And they run several classes for everyone from kids on little 50cc bikes to older guys on cool vintage machines. Oh, yeah, I love the sights, sounds and smells of old race bikes. Woodleaf is a small, fifth of a mile, red clay flattrack and

was mainly a kart track since the early 1990’s. A couple years ago, the Southeast Motorcycle Dirt Track Racing Association held an event there and between the racers and track owners, Donnie and Anita Wil-liams, it seemed like a good idea to race motorcycles regularly. “We are thrilled to have the flat-track motorcycles racing monthly at Woodleaf Speed-way,” Anita said. “It would not be possible without the participants and the spectators. We fully expect

this program to grow by leaps and bounds.” Word is getting out about Woodleaf. I saw a few of my Har-ley drag racing buddies there. Lane Boger, Jr. from Concord, NC, can turn left and was racing in a couple of classes. Typi-cally they have 65 –70 entries. If your riding group is looking for someplace different to go, plan a ride to Woodleaf Speed-way and watch the bikes sliding sideways. You might even catch the bug yourself and say, “I can do that.” According to Anita getting into flattrack is easy and the other racers will be glad to lend a helping hand or earful of advice. She said their racers are a very helpful, considerate group. They just want to race. Lots of the race machines were dirt bikes with some modifications such as the right wheels and tires. There was even a guy running an old Honda 750. By: Gary Steelman What a year this has been already! Conflicts around the world break into the news seemingly every day. Every day America’s fighting forces stand at the ready. Troops are com-ing home, and others are deployed for potential trouble spots around the globe. With that in mind this Memorial Day weekend, please say “Thank you” to the veterans around your neighborhood. Ser-vice to God and Country often comes with a sacrifice of time and the possibility of loss of life and limb. This year, as in the last 10 years, Freightliner has built a “Ride Of Pride” truck to honor that sacrifice, and to say “Thank You” to all those who gave of themselves in service of our great nation. This is the 6th year Schneider National has sponsored the Ride Of Pride. Each year Schneider puts the key to the Ride Of Pride in the hands of a veteran employee, this year’s driver is Chuck. Chuck says his father and grandfather are veterans as well. Thank you, Chuck for your service and congrats on receiving the Ride Of Pride truck. The Ride Of Pride has a history of its own, starting in 2002 when a group of veterans in the plant at Freightliner asked to use a truck from the plant for a parade on Memorial Day. That sparked a series of events that has culminated in the current Ride Of Pride truck. The Ride Of Pride truck has been to The Wall in Washington, DC several years and become the focal point of many parades and welcome home celebrations across the Carolinas and the nation. The Marine Corps League, Rolling Thunder, Patriot Guard Riders, and numerous other groups have ridden escort for the truck over the years. On several occasions active Army, Ma-rine, and Naval personnel have accompanied the Ride Of Pride truck on tours across the nation. The helicopter and overhead jet escort were the coolest sights; hundreds of bikers rolling north on I-77 escorting the Ride Of Pride to the state line and on to the “The Wall”.

Today’s dedication ceremony featured Mike McCurry, Freightliner’s top man at the Cleveland, North Carolina plant, and Ed Keeter, the Ride Of Pride’s driving force. Mike and Ed spoke of the heartfelt desire to thank all those veterans who selflessly serve in order that “We The People” can live in a land of freedom. CrossRoads H-D Bike & Hot Rod Car Show/Swap Meet

By: Scott Wicker One of our favorite rides is to the mountains of North Carolina and to visit CrossRoads Harley-Davidson in Wilkesboro. On Satur-day, On June 1st, they held their bike and car show. The parking lot was full of classic and muscle cars. 60 model Chevrolets, Corvettes, Camaros, Novas, Rat Rods, and Hemi Powered hot rods were just a few of the beautiful automobiles on display. The bikes were a little slow coming in but by the time judging began there were several motorcycles in show trim ready and waiting for the judges scrutiny. The crowd of spectators was constant throughout the day and all departments inside the dealership stayed busy with onlookers and customers searching for great deals on new Harley-Davidson Motor-cycles, Motorclothes®, and Motorparts® and accessories. Out in the parking lot, there were bounce houses for the kids to enjoy and even a few adults took the opportunity relive their child-hood and come down the giant slide. There were several folks out for the swap meet searching for deals on all kinds of accessories and parts. Some were too good to pass up even if you didn’t need them. Everyone had a great time and waited patiently for the winners of the show to be announced. Larry and Glenda Cleary had the best of show with their 1935 Ford Panel Truck. Man what a beautifully re-stored old Ford. You don’t see many of these around anymore folks! Then it was time for the best of show for the bikes. Delores Can-non took home top honors with her 2005 Harley-Davidson Softail® Deluxe that looked like it just came off the showroom floor. Each best of show received a cash prize along with a special plaque and

a Harley-Davidson Digital Picture Frame. Along with the show, there was a 50/50 drawing given away with proceeds going to MDA. We would like to thank Mike Lipford and all of the fine folks at CrossRoads Harley-Davidson for their hospitality. Congratula-tions to the Best Of Show winners. The Seth Nall Scholarship Fund Poker RunBy: Buzz Last summer Seth Nall life was lost in a senseless tragedy. One of Seth’s friends came up with the idea to start a Scholar-ship fund in his name to keep his memory alive. The Seth Nall Scholarship Fund was created to help graduating seniors at Trinity High School in Trinity, NC lighten the load of college tuition. Registration for the Seth Nall Scholarship Fund Poker Run was held June 8th at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Trinity, NC. In the early morning, rain poured from the sky, but by 10 am, the sun peaked out and dried the roads off. Bis-cuitville in Archdale graciously provided a variety of biscuits and cartons of hot coffee for the group of hardy riders who gathered to ride in Seth’s memory. Before we left the church, Seth’s father, Tim Nall said a few words of appreciation. We then huddled up for a group picture, and hit the road! The first stop was World Class Powersports in High Point, NC. We munched on chips and enjoyed other refreshments as we waited to pull cards for our poker sheets. World Class Powersports was offering a shot to “crack the code” to win a brand new Victory motorcycle off their showroom floor. It was a dollar a chance, which raised $55 for the scholarship fund! We left out of World Class Powersports and headed to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem to pull another card. It was looking good for me so far as I had 3 diamonds on

my poker sheet. We milled around the dealership for a bit and then took off for our final destination of the day. As we pulled into Riders In The Country in Randleman, I could smell food on the grill, and I was ready for a bite! As we filed into Riders, the crowd divided. Some headed to pull their final card and the rest headed for the food line. I headed to the poker line and pulled 2 devastating cards. I handed over my ruined poker hand and headed for some grub! Hot dogs, hamburgers, green beans, corn, and more was on the menu. It was quite a spread! When our hunger had subsided, Tim got the mic and award-ed the best hand, worst hand, and 50/50 winners. Most of the winnings were donated back to the cause. This year 4 Trinity High School graduates were rewarded a total of $2250 to help them out with college tuition. One of this year’s scholarship winners, Josh Dills, was present and was called up to receive some recognition. With sponsorships, donations, poker hands, and the 50/50, a whopping $7600 was raised for the Seth Nall Scholarship Fund! Tim would like to thank the Enforcers MC, World Class Powersports, Rider’s In Country, Precision Fabricators, Davis Roofing, and the local law enforcement who escorted the ride. He would also like to thank Harley’s Roadhouse in Little River who passed the hat during bike week and donated $460 in less than a half an hour! The silver lining in the tragic death of Seth Nall is that a community of friends can gather around to help each other out. In this case Seth’s name will live on in the Scholarship Fund created in his name. Seth’s name will be carried with the scholarship winners through out their life. Rest In Peace, Seth.

Spring Beach Bike Week 2013By: dpapabear Well, the Myrtle Beach Bike Week, Crusin’ The Coast, Mur-rells Inlet Bike Week, or whatever name you want to call it, has come and gone again. The weather the first of the week started out a little on the cool side but warmed up nicely by the middle of the week. The crowds were lite during the early part of the week as usual but started picking up on Thursday for the weekend. This has gotten to be the norm with the third weekend being the main time for the activities. This year the Speedway started having some vendors and events taking place as well as the usual locations. On the north end, the Swing Bridge, Captain Poo’s, Harley’s Roadhouse, and the Ocean Drive section of the beach had plenty of biker friendly businesses competing for your entertainment. On the south end, the usual bars were jammed packed with bikes and babes all week. The Myrtle Beach City area is still looking for your business as well, but not as crowded as the north and south ends where all the activity takes place. The Myrtle Beach City Law Enforcement was using their usual “selective enforcement” of the laws to suit their time and place. I had a run in with one of their “finest” on Main Street after he passed me 3 times and then on the 4th run decided he would show me his authority and be a butthole. I know many businesses want us, but until they clean house downtown, I

feel for them. Sorry! Just my opinion and the way I feel! Any-way, enough of my rantin’, back to the rally. The House Of Blues had Mike, Angie, Jesse, Bree and the Flaunt Girls from the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, SD on location and they drew quite a crowd. They were signing autographs and posing for pictures, had band playing during the day/evening and Jesse giving a concert at night. Several vendors were on location as well. On the south end at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson, they have probably the most vendors located at one location of the rally. They always have a variety from parts, clothes, leath-ers, accessories/add-ons, and just about anything related to the biker. They usually have couple of vendors with campers, toy haulers, trailers, and related items if you go that route and haul on occasion. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson always has their big tent setup at the shop’s back entrance with all kind of items, usually with 50% discounts as well. During the week, they also have poker runs, bike shows, and music. They offer a great location to just sit and watch the bikes and riders filter thru all day long and visit with old friends and make some new ones. There are always plenty of cool, different, interesting bikes to check out as well as admiring all of the pretty ladies and I guess for you ladies, watching the guys as well. It is still a great place to visit the beach and ride, just be careful within the city limits of Myrtle Beach! The Fall Rally takes place October 2-6. 2nd Annual Iron Chariot Ride

By: Debbie Harmon Motorcycles of every kind lined the parking lot at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge on Boulevard Street in Greensboro, NC on June 1st for their 2nd Annual Iron Chariot Ride. Pro-ceeds from the event go to support the expansion of the local Teen Challenge, a faith based program, which helps young men 18 - 45 break free from their drug and alcohol addictions. The seven-month residential program houses 24 students and six reentry students. Their goal is to double their occupancy by 2015. Renovations to an existing building are necessary to

make this possible. Also, additional staff will need to be hired. All this takes funding. The ride organized by Mike and Teresa Williams and Noah’s Tribe Biker Group, started out with a pancake breakfast made by the students at Teen Challenge. Coffee for breakfast was provided by Starbucks. Kickstands were up at 10 am and the group motored off to the country. Riders enjoyed the scenery of Guilford, Ala-mance, Randolph, and Chatham Counties with a rest stop at Silk Hope Fire Station. Winding roads and country lanes made for a great ride, which ended at a farm in Liberty where tables were setup under huge shade trees. Lunch was provided by Jam’s Deli and dessert from Chick-Fill-A. Door prizes were given thanks to the generous donations from Greensboro Harley-Davidson, Cycle Gear, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Kevin Powell Motorsports, Smoking Harley-Davidson, and Triad Bowling Lanes. Dr. Bob Harman, Executive Director of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, says, “Without a doubt, the generosity of our community makes a huge difference in the success of our program. Teen Challenge receives no government funding. We depend totally on the gifts of our supporters. YOU can make a difference in the lives of others.”

Durham Red & White 16th Annual Spring Bash

By: Kathy Johnson Durham Red & White 16th Annual Spring Bash took place on May 25th at Crazy Shots in Hillsboro, NC the Saturday before Memorial Day. The parking lot was roped off and over run with motorcycles of every make and model you could think of. At least 300 people came out to support the Durham 81 annual event. It has been the Saturday prior to Memorial Day as long as I can remember. No need to plan anything but attending this event on that day. If you do, I doubt there would be a lot of takers. Why? Because every one will be at the sup-port party! A few steps further and you had your eyes on the latest 81 apparel. That’s an easy stop and shop for most. Their shirts and accessories are a definite “I got to have”! For music that day the treat was Neil Donnelly. Good choice! He has played 81 events before and always helps make it a great event. The food is plentiful every year, but it always amazes me how much they go through. This year they served 60# of BBQ and 20# of meatballs. WOW! The lucky winner of the TV this year was Kate Kirkland and it made it even nicer since she was there when her name was called.

Torch Fires It UpBy: Everette “EZ” Short I think all of us have a little bit of pyromania in us, but Chad Land, AKA “Torch”, has taken the art of firing it up to a new level. Start-ing in Texas, with only $200 and a dream, he has rid-den, at times over 600 miles a day, through eight states of bad weather and nine rallies in the last three months, to put on a fire show that literally burns up the stage. While his ‘05 Road King shoots flames several feet out the tail pipe via his Hot Licks Exhaust flamethrower kit, this man can draw a crowd. Then, he gets busy juggling, eating, spitting, and swallowing fire. He has even set his face on fire a few times lately, and several times during the Spring Rally on the Beach this year. There are a lot of “Fire Eaters” out there, but Torch is an entertain-er with skills that include juggling, flailing the crowd with flaming whips, blistering nunchucks, and an attitude that just fans the flames, causing the crowd to scream to their fiends nearby, “Hey! Check This Out!” Soon enough, with a big crowd gathered, this brawny suntanned stuntman with a Mo-hawk haircut so dark it shines purple in the sun and a tattoo on the side of his head that reads, “John 3:16” has a screaming crowd of hypnotized fans wanting for more. So he gives it to them. His show is nothing short of spectacular and mesmerizing. You have to wonder what made Chad wake up one day to say, “I think I’ll go light myself on fire in front of an audience.” Accord-ing to Torch, the answer to that came from a terrible accident that made him question life and the afterlife. After giving his life over to Jesus, Torch says he realized that there are only so many minutes left in our lives. So, he says, why not live every day to the fullest? He found the answer by rid-

ing his bike thousands of miles to meet new and unusual people, by setting fire to himself in new cities every day, and by witnessing the power of God to the unwashed masses. If you didn’t catch Torch at The Origi-nal Suck, Bang & Blow over the Spring Rally on the Beach or at The Handlebar Corral in Maggie Valley then check him out on his Facebook page or look for him to perform at the Full Throttle Saloon during the 72nd Annual Sturgis Rally. This stocky daredevil may be a fearsome force to be reckoned with on stage, but he is really a wonderful person, with a great attitude and a warm smile for every new face he meets. Remember, Torch is a professional and certified fire performer, so don’t try these stunts at home. He has the burns to prove that his performance is no joke, but if you’re moved to witness your be-liefs as strongly as he is, try not to light yourself on fire while you do it. Keep the fires burning Torch; You ARE the fire.

Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine – Busted!

By: Mark Infield I got an e-mail the other day telling me that Ole Smoky Ten-nessee Moonshine was the official moonshine of some camp-ground in Sturgis, SD. I have a weakness for moonshine and since Wild Thing was out shopping and the ABC store was on her itinerary, I texted her and asked her to look for it while she was there. She said they had it and did I want her to get a jar. Of course, the answer was “Hell, Yea!” So she obliged me. We got peach since I had a favorite to compare it to. When we got home, I was anxious to taste Ole Smokey, opened it up and took a swaller. It smelled good and tasted like sweet peach syrup with no aftertaste or bite. I had another swaller. I got to lookin’ at the jar and on the ole timey lookin’ label I discovered that it said it was 20% alcohol! 20%! Why, that ain’t moonshine. We’re talking about moonshine that will burn in an automobile engine or flare up when you spit it on a bon fire. It seems like a sin to put “Ten-nessee” on something that is only 20% alcohol and then to call it moonshine to boot?! I put it in the freezer with the rest of my store bought hooch and the next day when I went to the freezer to get a pull off that jar, it was FROZEN SOLID! SFP! I had to let it thaw out before I could get a sip and any of you that know anything about liquor knows that if it is worth a flip it does not freeze. At $26.95, I give it 4 thumbs down. Some folks around Wilkes County still know where to come by some good peach liquor and as for tax paid moonshine, I am stickin’ with Caro-lina Distillery’s Carriage House Apple Brandy.

Jesus teaches us to be Brothers and Sisters, Bros & Bro-etts. If we truly follow Jesus we can care more about someone’s soul than whom they voted for and we can get past all the

divisions and get to the heart of the matter, Salvation! You see, there are no Democrats nor Republicans nor any other political party or agenda at the foot of the cross, only sinners! Ray Price Akea Express Drag Racing Team

Sets Record, Takes First In OhioBy: Sarah Hager The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team set a new track record at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Nor-walk, Ohio, on the weekend of May 17-19 and took first place in the weekend of drag bike racing. Rider Tommy Grimes now holds the track record with a time of 6.249 running at 219.61 MPH. Grimes’ first run in first round qualifying was 6.309 seconds at 224.02 MPH. Slowing down slightly for the second round, he ran a 6.391 at 223.5 MPH. His third run secured the num-ber two qualifier position, running 6.276 at 220.01 MPH, right behind Douglas Horne’s number one qualifier time of 6.26. Grimes made his record-breaking run of 6.249 seconds in the first round of eliminations. That run put him up against Chris Streeter, where Grimes was able to pull out another lead-ing time of 6.320 at 201.28 MPH, placing him against Horne in the final run. Grimes kept up his drive and beat Horne with a run of 6.256 seconds at 223.1 MPH. “I’m very proud of our team,” Ray Price said. “They worked very hard throughout the race. We were able to tune the bike to match the track, repair it and keep it maintained through the weekend and it performed very well on each pass, running very consistent. Tommy rode the bike superbly, kept it in the groove and had a good reaction time on every pass.” The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support. Bikers For Bikers Foundation 3rd Annual RallyBy: Jeanie Hood-Carter The 3rd Annual BFBF Rally at Shakori Hills was a blast! Even though attendance is still not at the desired level, the rally continues to grow. The rally opened on Friday and the music started at 7pm going through 2am Saturday morning, then starting up again at noon on Saturday and going until 2am again. You have never seen so much really good music at one event. Several shows got rained out before the end of the rally and there were a number of campsite parties during the storms with plenty of laughs, jokes, and campfires. The Saturday night show included a great light and smoke show. Between the light show and the little lights in the trees at Shakori Hills, there was a unique ambiance to set the mood for a great eve-ning of entertainment. Don Eason, organist for Brother Esau Band, pulled the win-ner of the 1st Annual Custom Bike Raffle at 9:30pm Saturday evening right in the middle of a major storm! There was light-ing, thunder, rain, and a winner of a beautiful custom bobber style bike with a 120ci motor! The bike has so much power you have to push compression buttons on the motor to start it! Congrats to Jim Grygier of Utah, winner of the bike and a big THANK YOU to Combat Cycles out of Jacksonville, NC for building a very HOT one of a kind powerhouse on 2 wheels. Also a big thank you to everyone who supported and bought tickets! Some of the best bands in NC play at this unique rally music fest! It has gotten to a point of getting on a list to be able to play for the rally now known for the outstanding entertain-ment. Bands at the event included the Harvey Dalton Arnold Blues Band (whose show got rained out but they made an ap-pearance in support of BFBF), Brother Esau, The Origin, Total Strangers, Night Shift, Wide Eyed Mischief, Temporary Saint, Jim Chapman and The Migrant Workers, Cold Blue Steel, Bubba Joe and Sour Mash, Neglektyd Toyz, Joseph Cagle and Charlie Duzan (2 acoustic artists who also got their shows rained out on Sunday but stayed for the entire event). People attended from as far away as TX, TN, and VA to see the Bike Rally-Music Fest! An added attraction this year was Pro-Wrestling by East Coast Championship Wrestling who raise awareness against bullying. The show was exciting and crazy and just about the time everyone really got into it, the sky opened up and we got another huge down pour. People stood in the rain until the wrestling had to stop to keep wrestlers from sliding out of the ring. Some of the ladies were so into the show I thought they were going to get into the ring to wrestle with the men! Man, talk about getting people aroused! This was a great addition to the events! BFBF is also known for limiting their vendors at the rally so each will bring something unique to the event. This year’s vendors included HR Woodcrafts with “Crazy Bob” who is a show all by himself, tie dye by 2Dy4, 2 types of jewelry from Twisted Linx and Beverly Rose Designs, Chocolate Creations

with handmade chocolates (yummy), KC’s Biker Barn with a wide variety of biker accessories, artist Mark McDowell, Willow Spring Walking Sticks, beaded window art, floral arrangements from Disabled Vets, Phat Phil’s (infamous to die for BBQ) Smokehouse, wings, dogs, Papas Funnel Cakes (delicious), lemonade, BFBF’s own booth with patches and rally tees, and of course The Beer Garden! There are many stories to tell after every rally, but only room for the best one I heard of at this event. In the wee hours of Saturday morning one of the camps became quite noisy with a lot of moaning and groaning, followed by “it’s hurting” and a certain name. Some disregarded the noise and thought it was really wild late night intimacy in the camp. Mickey said he would never forget the name called out because he was the man! Sounded quite painful to me! Turned out, one of the ladies had gotten a critter in her ear that bit her and she wound up in the ER! I guess you could say there was intimacy with a bug for one lady. “Crazy Bob” dressed in his version of Leather and Lace, along with several bikers riding in kilts put on a few side-shows for some laughing until you about busted your gut! Tom Diffin won the tattoo contest with his tattoo done from his twin brother’s ashes, and a contestant was awarded the Best Overall Bike at the rally. Painted Highway Ministries also provided church services on Sunday and free coffee each morning, another tradition at the rally. You never know who or what you will see at a rally and this was the best one yet! If you missed it, try next year when BFBF changes its rally dates and already has a few new attrac-tions to add.
