memorial dedication at the polish scout camp in Torksey Locksunday 7th september

The Lincoln Parachute Regimental Association were proud to present

a plaque to remember those members of the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade who dropped and fought alongside the British Airborne Division at the battle of Arnhem in Holland 70 years ago this month.

Andrew Cybulski, the Polish standard bearer in the centre, who now manages the scout camp, is proud that his father Michael jumped at Arnhem. Andrew's son is now following in his grandfather's footsteps since he is a corporal in the reserve army at Lincoln.

The day will also certainly have brought

back many memories for Jack Taylor of Nocton, third from the left, who was actually one of over 40,000 gallant allied troops who took part in the action. We are reminded of what Field Marshall Montgomery claimed after the battle, "In the years to come it will be a great thing for men to say 'I fought at Arnhem'".

A further point of interest is that an oak tree presented at the time of dedication was grown from an acorn taken from the British War Graves cemetery at Oosterbeek near Arnhem, where many of the fallen are buried. This was grown and presented by Geoff Mitchell, a former Para. Himself seen second from the right in the photograph.

Thorney news

It was good to see so many at our harvest celebration in October, and

especially good to see visiting families who had lived in Thorney many years ago. Tea was wonderful. Thanks to all who helped. Many thanks to those who brought donations along for the FRAMEWORK charity too. Gifts of food, toiletries etc were very well received as ever.

In January we will be collecting again for the TRUSSELL TRUST, so please bring along those unwanted gifts of foods, household items or toiletries etc which could make a big difference to a family in trauma.

Church will be open for COFFEE on library van days from 10.30 – 12 noon. It would be great to see you. January 21st and February 18th are the next dates.

£750 raised forst barnabas hospice

On the 11th - 13th July Shaun Brown took on a mountain bike challenge,

rather than just do the ride he decided to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice. This challenge was Rat Race the Crossing, 196 miles from Whitehaven on the West coast to Scarborough on the East coast over three days, taking in three National Parks, covering all terrains and lots of steep climbs. The three days if anyone can remember were beautiful weather-wise. Day 1 began at 7am and went well apart from a big crash going downhill on gravel and straight over the handlebars, thinking he had broken some ribs and in some considerable pain, Shaun continued on his way. Day 2 North Yorkshire moors you would think on a good day would

be cooler, not this year! Feeling very sore but determined to carry on Shaun ended up with heatstroke on the Saturday but for those of you who know Shaun he was determined to finish, and on Day 3 he did so by dipping his feet in the sea at Scarborough, an overall time of 19hrs 55.38 finishing 69th out of 340 finishers.

Shaun also took on the Manx End to End Challenge in the Isle of Man on 7th September which is a 75km challenge, again mountain biking. He previously competed in 2013 and this year he finished 455th out of 1006 finishers, bettering his time by 30mins.

So for all of you out there who sponsored him a very BIG thank you, the money has gone to a very worthwhile cause.

2014 royal british Legion annual poppy appealTrentside Villages collection

At the time of going to press, this year's Poppy Appeal collection has

already produced a record total.

The figure currently stands at £2800 beating last years' total of £2288. With more still to be added it is confidently expected to exceed £3000. A great achievement and thank you to all who helped and subscribed.

The centenary of the outbreak of World War I and the Tower of London sculpture 'Bloodswept Lands and Seas of Red' has struck a chord and the nation has really responded.

Congratulations to Dorcas Eatch of Torksey for attaining

a Distinction in the LRPS (Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society). Dorcas runs Fotodayz landscape photography workshops and tours in Scotland, Norfolk and Yorkshire, and the shots she took in these areas form the basis of her panel. The ten landscape images range from sunrise to sunset. ChristmasIn the Trentside Region

Quayside DeliI opened Quayside Deli in May this year, as my first business venture it was a complete change from my office job at BMI Lincoln Hospital. My aim was to provide a unique coffee shop with a friendly atmosphere where people can drop in for a coffee and do a little shopping away from the high street. Running a coffee shop and deli has been a completely new experience and one which I enjoy every minute of.

Situated alongside the marina, Quayside Deli is an ideal spot to come and enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of homemade cake. We serve hot pasties, hot sausage rolls and a range of hot paninis as well as fresh filled rolls. Alongside the coffee shop I also stock many local products including Starbuck’s bread of Market Rasen, Boston sausage, Stokes coffee, Belvoir drinks and cakes from Ticklebelly Lane Bakery, North Scarle.

Quayside GiftsHaving been friends and worked together for many years, when this opportunity came our way we didn’t

think twice. Opening on November 1st Quayside Gifts is a brand new venture, but one that we are very passionate about, providing a top class friendly service putting our customers first.

Our aim is to provide quality affordable gifts for all occasions. We stock a wide range of scarves, handbags, jewellery, candles, cards,

giftwrap, balloons and much more. Our stock includes brands such as; Quintessential, Moda, Terramundi, Ling and Wrendale. We are also agents for Johnsons dry cleaning. Being situated next door to Quayside Deli, we feel the two shops complement each other, making Burton Waters an even more desirable place to visit, away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, and parking is free.

Andrea King & Sue Taylor Tel: 01522 543972Unit 1a The Landings, Burton Waters, Lincoln, LN1 2TU

Already the festive season is upon us once again, but before you go heading to your local high street chain give a thought to our local businesses on your doorstop.

In this feature is a selection of local trades that would like your support. Too often we get wrapped up in the festive shopping without giving a thought to what is close to home, so if you would like something unique to give to your loved ones this year read on!

The Wool Loft

The Wool Loft was founded by myself, Liz Barnard and my daughter Hannah in 2011, starting by selling wool and crafts at local craft fairs. In October 2013 we took the plunge and opened Bridge Street Crafts and Models, situated in Gainsborough. We stock a wide range of wools, craft supplies and models. Each week we have three Knit and Knatter, Crochet and Clatter groups where people can socialise, knit, crochet or learn something new, with plenty of coffee, tea and homemade cake to keep everyone happy.

Throughout the run-up to Christmas we have some classes running on making your own

Christmas decorations and have knitting and crochet kits available for every level of experience. Gift vouchers are available for those who are difficult to buy for.

In October this year Hannah opened the Lincoln branch of The Wool Loft, situated in Unit 16 of The Mall up the High Street. She stocks a wide range of wools and spins some of her own to sell. Hannah has starting running a Knit and Knatter group on a Monday afternoon and hopes to start an evening group very soon.

Reg Willis Stickmaker

Reg Willis of Torksey started making sticks three years ago when he found he needed one whilst out shooting, he was behind the shoot and needed a particular stick for the job. He attended a course run by Keith Pickering of Helmsley and has never looked back. "My stick handles are made from buffalo and Indian stag horn, walnut beech or oak with shanks of hazel and blackthorn."

The sticks can be bought at the Newton on Trent post office or by contacting me on 01427 717130.The sticks make an interesting and unique Christmas gift but if you are too attached to your trusty stick I can make repairs on those too!

Trentside reports

Kettlethorpe and district women's institute

Here comes autumn while we are still hanging on to summer, and the

news that our Federation house in Louth has been sold, while our new county home in Horncastle is opening on the 29th September. The President read several invitations, one for those who would like to learn calligraphy on October 27th (take own materials), and another next year on March 7th - a visit to Birmingham BBC studios, something for the new diary but a 6.30am start! A WI Enterprise team are collecting for the underprivileged women of the world in rural situations, with suggestions for local Institutes. The President suggested we would have homemade cakes on offer for our refreshments at next meeting to support this. Next year we celebrate the centenary of the Women's Institute and perhaps one of the biggest celebrations will be held at the Royal Albert Hall, London but no details as yet. New plaques are to be made for each Institute, of a special design but in any medium. These will all be collected at the annual meeting in Skegness 2015. North/South Clifton is hosting a fashion show on 23rd September, also a film show on the 25th for the film 'Philomena.' In October, the 17th sees the Trentside Singers hold their 100th concert in the Methodist large hall, Gainsborough. Our speaker this month was a solicitor. His name was given as Angelo, and though he called his talk 'Tax Care and Toy Boys' it was merely a preface to the kind of information that everyone needs to know about such things as wills,

inheritance, trusts and the difficulties associated with making provisions for family, including powers of attorney. The raffles were taken by Barbara Gilbert, Sue Wright, Pat Starker, Lynne Moore and Doreen Wright, while Vivienne Elliott, Val Haynes and Lynda Mullally came first, second and third in the competition. Now we are looking forward to our annual dinner in October!

Elise Hawker, Lea

The community says farewell to rhys and steph prosser

Almost two hundred and fifty people attended an emotional farewell

communion service at St Botolphs Church Saxilby on Sunday 16th November to mark the retirement of Rhys and Steph Prosser.

There were many representatives from all the church congregations in the group as well as 15 clergy, some of which had travelled from a distance.

Rhys preached the sermon about how, when at theological college thirty-some years ago, a colleague used to call him 'Cushy Number Prosser' since when as curates for their early placements Rhys secured Wimbledon Parish Church and his friend to a more downmarket parish in South London. He continued to justify the name with other moves where Rhys enjoyed more favourable parishes in comparison to his friend. But as he

confirmed in all his 34 years of ministry he has been lucky enough to work with communities and congregations who have been supportive to the church. This of course speaks volumes for Rhys, can't he see that it is his personality that gets the best out of people?

It was a truly lovely service, culminating by the the two of them giving communion to the whole of the congregation. The mutual love and respect from them both and the congregation was very much apparent throughout and it could be seen that there were friendships there that will last forever.

Whilst 34 years ago there is no doubt that he did follow the right calling going into the church, in all the time since he has never forgotten his roots on the railway, as followers of his sermons over the years will bear testament to!

Thank you Rhys and Steph for all that you have done here in Lincolnshire and God Bless you in your future life in the South.

There will be a farewell 'bash' in St Botolphs church hall on Saturday 13th December between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Kettlethorpe united charities

Each edition of Trentside Links advertises the above charity which

is to help people in need in Fenton, Kettlethorpe and Laughterton. It might interest readers to know a little about the origins of this charity. It has three sources of income; the first being a gift by a previous rector of Kettlethorpe, the Rev John Becke, who in 1597 left a six acre field in Fenton Parish, this to be let out and the proceeds dispersed by the charity. This was originally for use in Kettlethorpe only. The second, a six acre field which is in South Clifton Parish, left by Mrs Hall in 1737 to be let and the proceeds split with 50% going to Kettlethorpe, 25% Newton on Trent, 25% South Clifton. The third was a small amount of money left by Mrs Leake in 1723 for investment and the proceeds going into the charity pot. These three charitable gifts were united following application to the Charity Commission in 1905. The church records show Mary Hall buried in 1735 and Ann Leak in 1733, these are possibly the two above ladies. Their generosity to the parishes should not be forgotten.
