From the Editor Aaron Bischoff

Welcome to the special birthday issue 180 of the Flyer & Salvage. Thank you again to those who have called to say they are enjoying Flyer & Salvage. I hope everyone enjoyed the last issue in particular the puzzle page.

Hopefully, the IT issue is well behind me now. I can not express enough how frustrating it was not being able to get things to work from one computer to another. So, thank you for being patient.

I was lucky enough to be rostered off on the Saturday night of our 40th anniversarydinner and my family made the trip down from the Hunter Valley for the night. It was great that the Museum of Fire opened up for us. My children Mitchel, Lilian and babyZac had a fantastic time playing in the Kids Corner driving the fire engine and getting dressed up. When I asked my son Mitchel if he had a good time, he gave a very enthusiastic “the chicken wings were awesome” reply, so I’ll take that as a yes. I would like to say a big thanks to Mark and Kris for opening up the museum and to Shane, Mark and Ray for making it all happen.

Over the next few months there are a few gatherings around the state, both in the city and in regional areas. So check out the Events Section and hopefully we will see you and your appliance at one in your area.

As always, a big thank you to everyone who sent in stories and photos. It makes it so much easier putting it all in place and this of course makes for a more interesting read. And of course, submissions of stories and photos are always appreciated. So if you would like something added to the Flyer and Salvage as a regular article, just let me know and I will do my best to add it to the next issue.

In each addition of the Flyer & Salvage, there is the “for sale and wanted pages”. Could members wishing to sell their appliances or other bits and pieces please attach a photo when sending the request through to me. This way others can see exactly what is for sale, which I’m sure would help with the sale.

Enjoy the read.

HFEA General Meeting

The next meeting of the Historic Fire Engine Association will be held on the Sunday 24th May 2009 at Huntingwood Fire Station starting at 10am.

So if you can, bring the family along with your fire engine. It will be a good time to catch up!

40th Report by Guy Ellis

The 40th Anniversary of the HFEA was a great success on the weekend of 14th and 15th of March. The weekend’s activities were well attended by past and present members of the Association.

The Saturday night get together was a wonderful event thanks to the great effort from Kris and Shane McDonell. The night started off with a casual look around the Museum of Fire which has many new displays. It is credit to Mark White and his team of staff and volunteers.

Then it was to the Mezzanine level that looks over the great display of Fire Engines for drinks and some very nice music and singing from Jordan McDonell and KyleThompson.

Chris, Martha and Guy share a drink

We were then treated to a Slide Show presentation from Kris McDonell, Conner McDonell and Paul White of HFEA events from the past 15 years. Not to be outdone we were given another Slide Show presentation from former foundation members Barrie and Margret Gillings of HFEA events from 1969. Both these presentationswere great and made a wonderful backdrop for the evening.

The rest of the night was spent catching up with friends and talking “Fire Engines” while we enjoyed the supplied food and drink.

HFEA members and families gather to view the slide presentation of the early days of the HFEA

Sundays run was attended by five Fire Engines, Tom Hetherington’s Dennis Jag, Brett Williams’ Land Drover, Leigh Daniels’ Ford D400, Ryan Williams’ International 1700 and my Bedford J1. Our backup crew was Mark Hall and family in his van.

We started off at the Museum of Fire then travelled to Jean Pike’s place via Windsor for morning tea. At Jean’s we were treated to tea, coffee and cake supplied by Jean and Robyn.

It was then to the rear shed where the boys started to play while the girls looked on in a bemused fashion.

First out of the shed was the Train with rides for all the kids. Then it was the DL37 Turntable Ladders. They took a little bit to get started as they have been instorage for the past year or so. First up the ladder was Ryan then it was Conner (all very brave).

By this time the girls were looking a bit bored with it all, so it was time to bring out the vintage cars. After giving the kids a ride in the 1928 Ford “A” model roadster it was the girls turn. Julie Hall was enjoying her ride and told Mark she wanted one for herself. Mark said “if you can drive one I will buy it.” The next thing after a short lesson from me she was behind the wheel. I think he might have to eat his words!

My thanks go out to Jean Pike for letting us all run wild at her place. My thanks also go to those that attended this great weekend.

DENNIS UPDATE

In this issue I was going to report on the Dennis open day that was to be held at the end of last year. Unfortunately the open day did not go ahead as they were not manufacturing in 2008, they thought it was inappropriate to hold an open day especially as this was the 100th year of Dennis Fire Engines.

The following extract is courtesy of “Transport Engineer”

Production of Dennis fire appliances is set to restart, as an indirect result of MAN’s ditching of plans to build refuse collection vehicles. Alexander Dennis stopped building fire appliances a year ago following demands from its cab supplier Dennis Eagle (owned by Ros Roca of Spain) for guaranteed orders for at least 50 a year.

Unable to commit to that number, Alexander Dennis stopped production of fire appliance chassis at its Dennis Fire plant in Guildford, Surrey while another cab supplier was sought (Transport Engineer December 2007). But at the Fire & Rescue show in Liverpool last month Dennis Fire was telling brigades that production would restart next year, with the familiar Cromweld stainless-steel cab built by Dennis Eagle in Blackpool.

There will be no immediate return to the fire-appliance market for Guildford-built Sabres because Dennis Fire has decided to skip Euro-4 engines and go straight toEuro-5. “We can’t get the first of these from Cummins until next March,” explains Dennis Fire general manager Roger Paice. “It will probably be June before we see the first chassis.”-

Did you know!

On the 13th July [1899] John Dennis was trying out a motorised tricycle. From the direction of the river, he tackled the slope of Guildford High Street, passing, at the foot, the end of Friary Street.

In Friary Street was Sergeant William Hall, of the Borough Police, who saw the machine flash past; when he reached the main thoroughfare, it had disappeared up the hill, but the worthy sergeant had, he believed, all the evidence he needed.

Page 7: Flyer & Salvage Issue 180

No. 180 FLYER & SALVAGE March 2009

Page Number 7

When the case came before the magistrates, he stated on oath that the machine had been driven at a furious pace, at least 16mph. In vain the defendant protested that the engine was incapable of giving the power required for such a performance on the hill; the magistrates however were convinced that there was an offence.

They came to the conclusion that the 16mph was not proved, but, for furious driving, twenty shillings was the penalty imposed. And the upshot? To turn adversity into advantage has always marked the genius.

Next weeks Dennis advertisements triumphantly declared that their machines could climb Guildford High Street (for those who don’t know it, the maximum gradient is one in eleven) “at 16mph, on the sworn testimony of a constable”.

Quiz Time

Ian Scandrett has sent in this election photo and asks if fellow HFEA members can answer the following.

“Which engine is this?”

What event was it for” [a magnifying glass will assist!]

Presidents Report 2009

Here we are in 2009 and being our 40th year of operation. I wounder if the founding members thought it would last this long. It seems that the Fire Engines are getting older and our members getting younger or it could be the other way round.

It has been a good year with members getting about and showing off there appliances. Never let a chance go by and not take out your Fire Engine, people love to see them and I am sure we all love to display them.

It is with great sadness that a few of our older members have left us and gone to the Fire Station in the sky, they will be missed.

Once again a few old appliances have changed hands, some going to new members, others with current ones. I know my own collection keeps on growing (11 not too many is it?).

The biggest event this year has been our regular run to the NRMA Motorfest in the City on Australia Day. Having 8 trucks there and 11 of us dressed up in the old uniforms with brass helmets on, is a sight to be seen.

Our continued attendance at the NSWFB’s station centenaries has been very much appreciated by the Brigade and has put us in a very good light. Thanks to everyone that has taken part.

This years AGM is was held at Parramatta Park for the second time followed by our now annual pump day. This has proven to be quiet a success and a very enjoyable day. To see the old appliances doing what they do best against the new appliances is a great thing to see.

Many of you may not be aware that the Fire Brigade and the Union has now banned the Petrol Powered International Appliances because of the high level of Carbon Monoxide readings in the rear cabin when the trucks are at idle.

My guess is they will now be retired from Service and sold off at Auction later in the year. Most of them are around 25years old, which means in 5 years they can go on Historic rego. They sell for about $5000, so go down to Pickles Auction and grab a bargain.

Thank you everyone for your support in the last 12 months. I hope I have been able to help at least some of you when you have called.

I would also like to put on record a big thanks to Mark White and the team at the Museum of Fire for all the help and support that they give throughout the year.

MUSEUM of FIRE

Located in Penrith at the base of the Blue Mountains, the former power station has been transformed into a world class museum. Housed under one roof, you will find fire appliances on display from early hand pulled squirt pumps through to the early motorised appliances and a few examples of appliances just retired from service.

Other static displays include fire fighting equipment and a “working” watch room. There is also a theatre with continuous movies and safety videos. The Kid’s Corner will keep the junior fire fighting busy for hours with uniforms, fire trucks to drive and interactive computer games. And of course there is the museum shop!

So if you have not made the journey out to the museum yet, I recommend you put aside a day and visit the Museum of Fire.

The following photos were taken at the HFEA 40th Anniversary Dinner from the mezzanine level to give a good view of the museum floor. As you can see from the photos there is plenty to see and do. It could almost be mistaken for Guy’s shed!

OUT & ABOUT

If you have been out and about with your fire appliance, how about sharing your adventure with other HFEA members.

So if you have a story or some photos of a recent run or visit, just send an email to [email protected] and I’ll include it in the next issue of Flyer & Salvage.

The boys on the Central Coast were again busy towards the end of the year at the Gosford Christmas Parade. Guy Ellis and Vince Weigold brought along their J1 Bedfords to help support a very happy Bernie Cinders (Chris Wallace Capt 460 Stn)

Christmas Capers

Stuart Collins has been getting into the Christmas spirit decorating his house in time for Santa. With 82mtr of fairy lights and a giant inflatable fire engine complete with Santa driving, one can only imagine the power bill. Stuart if you need a generator or two, I know a bloke who sells them cheap!

BLAST FROM THE PAST

In the following issues of Flyer & Salvage, I will be adding some other old adverts and other flyers that manufacturers produced in days gone by. It gives a good look into the past on how things were done. I hope you all enjoy the historical flyers in particular the workshop manual flyers.

FOR SALE

Thinking of selling your fire engine?

How about giving thought to selling it to a current member of the HFEA. If you are unable to do this, suggest that the new owner becomes a member of the Association.

That way we keep it an active viable association dedicated to retaining the history of a very unique industry. Remember also to advertise it through our members first. We have over 70 members who are always keen to add to their collections

And if possible could you please add a photo or two of the appliance. This way people can see what they are possibly going to buy.

Anyone wishing to sell their fire engine and would like to have it in the next Flyer & Salvage, could they please email me at [email protected]

Flyer & Salvage is named after two of the firefighting appliances that operated from the City of Sydney Fire Station (traditionally known as Headquarters) in Castlereagh St, Sydney. During the early days of the Historic Fire Engine Association, meetings were held at Headquarters Fire Station, and were often interrupted by fire calls. Crews were called to their appliances over the public address system, and the call of “Flyer & Salvage” was the most common. The Flyer was one of three pumping appliances at Headquarters (the others being the Runner and the Second Call). It was the first appliance to leave the station on each fire call in the city area. It was crewed by an Officer and five firefighters, none of whom were allowed to leave the immediate area of the Flyer during their shift. The Salvage motor was designed and equipped to carry salvage and rescue gear not normally carried on firefighting appliances. Most Salvages have now been removed from their traditional homes at the District stations and redeployed at stations which have been allocated primary rescue responsibilities. In this new role they are known as Rescues and respond to all rescue incidents within their area.HFEA OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2008: (elected at the February Annual General Meeting).President
