FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to issue 181 of Flyer & Salvage. Firstly, as always, I would like to start by saying thanks to everyone who has sent in letters, photos or stories for this issue. It certainly makes it much easier to put our club magazine together.

In this issue, I have included a short questionnaire. I am hoping you can spare the time and give me some feedback on the magazine. My contact details are on the back page for those who are able to send it back to me. Like I have said before, filling the shoes that Brett left me has been enjoyable and challenging at times. Brettalways produced a top class magazine which I enjoyed very much. I want to continue with that quality, and develop the magazine at the same time.

In a previous issue, there was a small article on Corrimal Fire Station and of the fire appliances that have been stationed there since it opened. It was pleasing to receive a letter from one of our members to say how much he enjoyed the story. John Fenwick had grown up in Corrimal and went to the school next to the fire station. He went on to say he would often visit the fire station during the school day. He even got to be a real fire fighter when he grew up, joining the NSWFB at Campbelltown Fire Station when he turned 18.

As I sat and read the letter, the more it sounded like my own childhood. I too ended up joining the NSWFB at 18. I am sure there are a few more of us out there who had a similar growing up. While we may not have all joined the fire brigade, one thing is for certain, we have a love of fire engines. And it is that childhood dream that we all had that makes it what it is all about. You sure see it in the little faces of the kids when you take the old fire engines to the local school. Sitting among those kids with a smile a mile wide, hanging off every word, is a little fire fighter who wants to drive that big red truck. And more importantly, a possible future HFEA member!

HFEA GENERAL MEETING

The next meeting of the Historic Fire Engine Association will be held on the Sunday 16th August 2009 at RailCorp Fire Station starting at 10am. The meeting will be held in the new fire station that will be completed this month. The station is at the cnr of Pitt St and Eddy Ave Sydney, opposite the original Sydney Fire Station and across the road from Sydney Central Railway Station

So if you can, bring the family along with your fire engine. It will be a good time to catch up!

PRESIDENT’S POSTING

International Appliances

Mark Hall and I have been talking to the NSWFB about members being able to purchase appliances direct from them. The Commissioner has given his approval for this to happen. The advantage for us is that they will still have their lights/siren’s etc on them and we will get to pick the best ones. We have been down to the workshops and inspected twenty that are in the “Grave Yard”.

We have picked out three which are in quiet good order for those members that have indicated that they would like one. We have negotiated a price for them which is the average price of what they are bringing at auction.

My Collection

Over the last few months my own collection has changed. I have sold one of my DL37 ladders, which has gone to Tasmania. It has been replaced with ME426 Dennis D600 which I will now restore. This brings my collection to ten, not counting my 1913 hand drawn hose reel (damn eBay!), which I have just finished restoring.

General

At the last meeting the question was asked about membership numbers and the Association’s financial position. It is very pleasing to report that membership is up and we are in a strong financial position. This is a credit to our hard working committee members who give hours and hours of behind the scenes work to make the Association run.

On a sunny Saturday back in April, Doug Humphreys added a little colour when he went along to display his J1 Bedford at the Burwood Heritage Festival. Complete with period turn out gear, Doug was on hand to show off the little Bedford and answer all the usual questions.

His appearance in the old fire fighting uniform together with the fire engine proved not only a hit with the crowd but with the event organisers as well. As a result of Doug’s effort, the HFEA have been invited to attend the Burwood Festival to be held on Sunday 20th September 2009 at the Burwood Park.

So if you are available on the 20th September, come along with your fire engine and family and help fly the HFEA flag together with Doug and his Bedford

BLAST FROM THE PAST

MOTOR MOVEMENTS

A number of fire appliances have changed hands over the last few months. I thought I would add this new segment as I know some of our members like to know where different vehicles have gone, especially if it is near where they live.

Guy Ellis has sold one of his sets of ladders with it going south to Tasmania. He also has acquired another Dennis Jag. He has also got a new hose reel to add to his ever expanding collection.

Ian Wilkinson has sold his two Dennis Jags, with them going to a gentleman from Cronulla. I actually met the new owner while he had his new toy at Central RailwayStation having photos taken to promote the upcoming school formal expo. He had given it a new coat of paint and it was a very tidy looking appliance indeed.

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT!

As we are all very well aware that Dennis Bros have been around for quite some time, some may not know of how diverse the brothers were in their early days of business.

Originally bicycle manufacturers, the brothers turned to trucks and later fire engines. In 1995, Dennis Bros celebrated its centenary at Wroughton Airfield in England. On hand was Dr Barry Hutchinson who took the following rather interesting photo.

Dr Hutchinson writes: “I hope I may be excused for submitting this picture to a fire engine site. However it does show the diversity of the Dennis company famous for making fire engines. The picture was taken at the Dennis centenary celebrations (100 years) at Wroughton airfield. You were able to lap the airfield (driving yourself) in any of their products from buses and coaches, refuse wagons and of course their fire engines. Naturally the queue for the Rapiers was the longest! You were encouraged to drive the Rapier as fast as you dare and if the tyres were not screaming round the corners you just weren't going fast enough. There were times allowed for more sedate laps of the airfield and that is the time the vintage machines went out and the brave man shown below lapping on his Dennis lawnmower. It was the most memorable weekend and something that we will never see the likes of again”

I thought the above photo reminded me of the fact that I had seen a Dennis lawn mower before. A quick look back through the many books I have, soon solved the mystery. It was none other than the Flyer & Salvage issue 142. Well done Brett!

NEW CORPORATE COLOURS FOR NSWFB APPLIANCES

Two of the guys that work with me are also Retained Firefighters at 341stn Kariong. They recently took delivery of a new Varley fire appliance to replace their Volvo. The new appliance has been decked out in the new “checked” decals. I’m also told that fitted with the new look colour scheme is 361stn Leura’s Isuzu pumper and 452stn Tamworth’s Scania pumper. The boys are very happy with the new truck and they have made the comment that the photos don’t do the truck justice, as it looks far better in real life. When I joined the brigade, we were spoilt with Accos, Jags and Bedford tankers. Now look at them.

How about giving thought to selling it to a current member of the HFEA. If you are unable to do this, suggest that the new owner becomes a member of the Association.

That way we keep it an active viable association dedicated to retaining the history of a very unique industry. Remember also to advertise it through our members first. We have over 70 members who are always keen to add to their collections

Dodge D5N328 ex Queensland Fire Service pumper. It is powered by a 318 Fireball V8 and has had much work done on it over the last few years, including new radiator, new alternator, reconditioned brake booster, new brakes front and rear. It is currently registered as fire fighting plant (so it's cheap) but it's also eligible for concessional registration. Despite having done very little work since I bought it, it runs very well. It could do with a respray to bring it up to scratch, but it's straight and original. It carries 700 litres of water and has a Godiva PTO pump and hose reel. Flyer & Salvage is named after two of the firefighting appliances that operated from the City of Sydney Fire Station (traditionally known as Headquarters) in Castlereagh St, Sydney. During the early days of the Historic Fire Engine Association, meetings were held at Headquarters Fire Station, and were often interrupted by fire calls. Crews were called to their appliances over the public address system, and the call of “Flyer & Salvage” was the most common. The Flyer was one of three pumping appliances at Headquarters (the others being the Runner and the Second Call). It was the first appliance to leave the station on each fire call in the city area. It was crewed by an Officer and five firefighters, none of whom were allowed to leave the immediate area of the Flyer during their shift.The Salvage motor was designed and equipped to carry salvage and rescue gear not normally carried on firefighting appliances. Most Salvage appliances have now been removed from their traditional homes at the District stations and redeployed at stations which have been allocated primary rescue responsibilities.
