2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Chamber’s Vice President Graduates from Institute for Organization Management

Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Mark Dickey, IOM, vice president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber, has graduated from the program and has received the recognition of IOM. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies the individual’s completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management.

“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”

Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four week-long sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively.

“Chamber Institute, as we know it, has been invaluable to me and my peers across the country,” said Chamber President Nancy Bruns. “Our Chamber is fortunate to now have four graduates of the Institute program on staff. It takes dedication and commitment to our profession to complete the course and we are proud of Mark for this accomplishment.”

The purpose of the U.S. Chamber’s Accreditation Program is to facilitate continuing excellence in the chamber industry and to foster a pro-business environment across America. Only 217 Chambers are currently accredited.

Chamber Awards First Lifelong Learning Scholarship

Chamber Wins National Award for Communications Excellence

The Lee’s Summit Chamber has received an Award of Excellence in a national competition sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), a national association of professionals who manage chambers of commerce.

The Chamber received the award for its 2012 “Shop Lee’s Summit Campaign”. In 2012 the Lee’s Summit Chamber was granted funding by the city of Lee’s Summit to implement a city-wide Shop Lee’s Summit Campaign. The goal of the campaign was to educate residents on the importance of shopping locally and encourage them to do so. The Chamber launched the campaign in spring 2012. The multi-faceted campaign featured a new logo, press releases, posters, fliers, and ads. The most unique and wildly successful part of this campaign was the Shop Lee’s Summit Contest.

“The 2012 Shop Lee’s Summit campaign and contest was an effort led by our Visitors Council,” said Director of Communications Gina Seibel. “It was a fun project and I enjoyed working with our awesome committee of volunteers to design and execute this campaign. Most importantly is the great response we got from the Shop Lee’s Summit contest. Through the contest we were able to reach many residents and educate them on the importance of shopping here.”

The 29th annual Awards for Communication Excellence program this year attracted 142 entries from chambers of all sizes across the U.S. A three-judge panel of chamber executives evaluates the entries and selects winners in four categories: advertising, electronic, publications and campaigns.

"At the heart of every effective chamber of commerce you’ll find outstanding communications in a variety of media,” said ACCE President Mick Fleming. “We’re proud to highlight the truly exceptional communications work that chambers create as they advance the interests of their communities.”

Kamara Scott, an employee with the R-7 School District, was awarded the first Lifelong Learning Scholarship from the Lee’s Summit Chamber. Scott is currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in Technical Business Management

When asked why he should be selected for the scholarship Scott stated, “I will use my education to give back to the community, and I have a passion for electrical work as well as being a manager. I know how to treat people and care about their well being. I don’t take any thing for granted or any person. I know the definition of hard work and have the tools and the drive to make sure that I do the work to reach my goals.”

The lifelong learning scholarship was created as a result of the success of the Chamber's Dancing with the Chamber Stars fundraising events in 2011 and 2012.

The Chamber has not only built upon funding that supports the four high school scholarship awarded annually, but also created an additional $1,000 scholarship for Lifelong Learning.

The Chamber's Education Committee is passionate about lifelong learning and has established a scholarship to support those that seek to continue their education beyond high school.

Requirements to apply for the scholarship were as follows: at least 24 years, employed a minimum of 20 hours per week by a business that is a current member of the Lee's Summit Chamber.

To learn more or to join the Chamber’s education committee contact Chrissy Symes at 816.524.2424 or [email protected]

Building our community one loan at a time.

Shelia Hilker is the lucky winner of the Shop Lee’s Summit $1,000 prize. Hilker was awarded her $1,000 check on June 21 during the annual Parks and Recreation concert Rock the Green.

The Shop Lee’s Summit contest was created by the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the city of Lee’s Summit to educate and encourage residents to purchase goods and services in Lee’s Summit to improve the quality of the community. When residents Shop, Dine, Play in Lee’s Summit, the additional sales tax dollars go toward improving the community and supporting its many needs.

To enter the contest residents had to fill out an official entry form and attach five original receipts from five separate businesses in Lee’s Summit.

This was the second year for the contest. The contest began May 1 and ended on May 31. The Chamber received 1,003 entries, totaling $143,700.94.

“My staff heard several times how excited residents were about the contest,” said Nancy Bruns, Chamber president. “However, more important than the excitement were the comments from individuals that said the contest made them really stop and think where they decided to spend their money. I think the real success of the

campaign comes from the number of individuals we educated and changed habits on where they spend their dollars.”

When asked how she would spend the money, Shelia stated she was unsure, but was definitely going to Shop Lee’s Summit!

An Ad is Not a Brand

page 8

Oktoberfest is Coming Soon!

Ads are the fast food of marketing. As I used to tell my students, an ad is like a date-you see each other one time. A brand, on the other hand, is like falling in love. That is, your brand connects on a deeper emotional level and you can’t wait to see each other again. Ads represent short-term thinking, and as Richard Branson, CEO & Founder of the Virgin Group has said, “short-term thinking delivers short-term results, which is the biggest enemy of building your brand.”

Think about it. You run an ad to promote your product or service, hours of operation, maybe even include a price point, a phone number and a web address. You love it, you show it to your employees and they tell you how much they love it. Maybe, even your neighbors stop you on the street and tell you that they saw your ad and they love it. Right about now you’re feeling pretty confident about your advertising expertise. Then something happens. You fall victim to the dreaded “me too” syndrome. One of your competitors runs an ad too. And why not? Your competitors can duplicate your product or service in a matter of weeks if they put their minds to it.

However, the one thing your competitors can never duplicate is your BRAND, because your brand inoculates

your audience from all competitive messaging. Brands are steeped in research and therefore cultivate an emotional preference and loyalty by creating a relationship with your target audience. Great brands convey a single promise that resonates with the consumer because it speaks to their needs, wants and desires. Hopefully your brand’s promise, is directly linked to a fervent wish or solution to a problem.

Listen-up Facts:1. It is no longer about selling. It’s about creating

relationships with customers that create an emotional preference for your brand.

2. Selling a product based on price and availability will ensure that you will stay a product rather than become a brand.

3. Communication today must focus on “Consumer Wish Fulfillment” NOT “Advertiser Wish Fulfillment.”

4. Staying relevant is the main challenge facing businesses today.

5. Most businesses don’t have an objective perspective and therefore make assumptions that aren’t as obvious to individuals outside their business.

Brand leaders not only define the category, but their messaging eventually becomes part of the culture by creating their own mind-space: Just Do It, The Big Apple, The Real Thing, I’m Lovin’ It, The Happiest Place On Earth...

Mavericks Unveil Season 5 Logo

The Missouri Mavericks made many business announcements in early June. The Mavericks’ President, Brent Thiessen, unveiled a logo celebrating their 5th Season, and announced multiple player signings. The Mavericks also announced their home opener will be on Saturday, November 2, and previewed a new Orange Jersey design among other items.

The Mavericks Season 5 logo incorporates their horseshoe logo with a hockey stick and shield. The team will once again honor the famous phrase of Independence-native, 33rd President Harry Truman, with a slightly different spelling of “Give M Hell” as their campaign slogan for the 2013-14 season. The Mavericks unveiled a new design for their alternate orange jersey featuring the Season 5 logo, as well as black and white variations of the home and away jerseys featuring the Season 5 logo on the shoulder.

Infusion Express put out an offering for about $500,000 in securities and has closed on about half of that, with a goal of closing on the other half by July, said CEO Don Peterson.

Peterson and three colleagues launched the company in November 2012, and he said they plan to open several more locations throughout Kansas City, beginning with Overland Park.

Infusion Express offers drug infusions for patients with chronic or acute illnesses outside of a hospital or doctor’s office setting. That helps them to keep costs down — they don’t have the large overhead associated with hospitals and are able to buy drugs directly from manufacturers instead of through a pharmacy — and it

also allows them to offer evening and weekend hours.

“When we think about what that does for patients who need infusions every four to six weeks for the rest of their lives — and generally they have to take a half day off work to do that — it’s of tremendous value,” he said.

Many people who have chronic conditions like Crohn’s Disease, colitis, multiple sclerosis and iron deficiencies use drug infusion therapies every several weeks to manage their conditions.

Peterson said companies like his already exist in larger markets, and he hopes to expand rapidly in the Midwest in some smaller markets. They’re eyeing a handful of Kansas City locations then hope to move into St. Louis.

Journal Wins Nine Golds at 2013 Heart of America Awards

The Kansas City Press Club gave out nine gold awards to the Journal in the annual 2013 Heart of America Awards competition. The awards were presented at a noon luncheon June 22 at the Grand St. Café.

“I am proud of the depth and breadth of our awards this year from the SPJ Chapter in Kansas City,” Publisher John Beaudoin said. “From features to beat writing to sports to photography, we did well in every category against some of the best newspapers in the Midwest.

“I continue to be proud of our news trio, Russ, Toriano and Ashlee, and the amount and quality of work we get done each week to put out the Lee’s Summit Journal. I would put these three up against any weekly news team in the state.”

The Journal picked up 18 awards total.
