Municipal Reception Recognizing one ofthe people who sets things in motion at CityHall

For over a decade, the Chamber has had a tradition

of issuing the Municipal Employee of the Year

Award to an individual who has gone above and

beyond his or her duties to contribute to theeconomic well-being and quality of life in our

community. This year, we honoured Geoff Coons of

    the Mayors Office.

Geoff has carved out a strong niche at City Hall

serving as a conduit between many people and

organizations and the Mayor. Geoff has been

Executive Assistant to the Kingston Mayor since

2004. Hes always joked about getting this award

and when am I due to receive it?

Seriously, Geoff has been a strong friend to the

Chamber in facilitating many meetings and events

through the years. He is always keeping us

informed of upcoming schedules and has been a

strong ambassador for the City during delegations.

Pictured below, l-r, Chamber President Megan

Coughlin, Municipal Employee of the Year Geoff

    Coons.

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce

is now online with video; there is now a New

    Business Profiles Marketing Opportunity!

The Business Profiles "Shoot" is in

partnership with Viva Productions and is for

Greater Kingston Chamber of CommerceMembers only. You will be able to use the

video in numerous ways: Chamber Web Site

    (www.kingstonchamber.on.ca), Chamber

    YouTube Channel

your Facebook, your LinkedIn, your Twitter,

with Newspapers Online, via Email, and also

post on your web site, etc

Why More Businesses are going video-friendly

The ads look more like content than ads.

Thats an obvious one, but too many brands

still feel compelled to tack traditional

    advertising techniques onto their online

video offerings, like phone numbers and a

    call-to-action. But the savvy viewerwhich

is most of them latelycan see right

through that. And the second a video feels

like an ad or a piece of persuasive

marketing, they tune out quite a bit. The

best social video ads from brands set out to

    entertain first and foremost and

sometimes even as the only real objective.

The ads are more engaging. A video has a

far greater chance of going viral if it creates

an emotional response in a viewer, because

an emotional response is about as engaged

as a viewer can get. We are social creatures

and when something moves uswhether to

tears or to laughterwe want to share that

experience with others. New evolutions invideo technologylike letting viewers

choose which ad they want to see, or

interactive videos that literally let the

viewer control some portion of the

experienceare also ways for brands to

    engage consumers more dramatically.

OCC Calls for Emphasis on Lifelong

    Learning and Job-Based Training

TORONTO:TORONTO:TORONTO:TORONTO: Today, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCCreleased the report, Protecting Our Most Valuable Resource:

The Business Case for Lifelong Learning and Job-Based

Training, which outlines the impact of knowledge on

innovation and the economy, and calls for expanded

government support for a broad-based workforce training

    system.

A 2010 OCC Employer Survey found over three-quarters of

Ontario employers link workforce training to increased

quality of output, improved service, and increased staff

    morale and motivation.

Businesses across Ontario understand how knowledgeable

workers support innovation and economic prosperity, said

Len Crispino, OCC President & CEO. Unfortunately, the

current workforce training system has a number of gaps tha

limit its ability to produce a highly skilled workforce.

One of these gaps is the lack of private sector involvement

in the design of workforce training, which results in program

development that overlooks the needs of business. Rapidly

evolving technology and ongoing business development

require workers to have a diverse skill set. Private sectorinvolvement and support for ongoing workforce training

programs is critical to ensuring people are keeping up with

the demands of an ever-changing workplace and have

    appropriate job-based skills.

Dynamic and diversified economies require training

programs to be aligned with emerging sectors and regional

economic development strategies, said Crispino. We need

to strengthen the link between education deliverers and the

private sector to equip Ontarios workforce with valuable,

    in-demand skills.

The Protecting Our Most Valuable Resourcereport offers

recommendations to the Ontario government that focus on

the funding and infrastructure of the current training

    system.

The report, and its recommendations, can be found at

    occ.on.ca/2011/06/protecting-our-most-valuable-

    resource/.
