SmartWorks In collaboration with the Workforce Education Task Force, a monthly feature

story will focus on workforce education and development from the perspective

of real people who are making a real difference in our communities.

#ThinkCarrollFirst—everyone has the potential to learn, work and thrive

right here in Carroll County!

The President’s Advisory Council on Financial Liter-

acy defines it as “the ability to use knowledge and

skills to manage financial resources effectively for a

lifetime of financial well-being.”

When do you begin to teach money management

skills? At Oak Mountain Academy, it begins in the

lower school (Pre-K through third grade) and contin-

ues until graduation. In Karen Buchanan’s fourth

grade class, students are running their own business

to experience how money works in the world and it

involves something called Brown Cow, Blue Blast

and Crumble Cookie.

“Our class is in the ice cream business,” said Bu-

chanan. “We began the year with a discussion of

products to sell (product research) and the class de-

cided to go with ice cream since it was something

students already wanted.”

Some of the many business concepts the students are

learning include product research, employee schedul-

ing, customer service, inventory control, supply and

demand, and profit/loss margins.

The class is divided into sales teams (employee

scheduling) responsible for a 15-miunte shift each

day during lunch. When asked what they learned

during their sales shifts, the students had a variety of

answers: be sure to get the right amount of money

(profit/loss); check parent permission letters to pro-

tect students with allergies (customer service), and

be sure to close the freezer (inventory control).

Students were quick to correlate their experiences to

the different subjects they study. Preparing the in-

ventory sheet each day and making change obviously

relate to math. Maintaining the freezer temperature

below 32 degrees, and understanding the relationship

between sales volume and outdoor temperatures in-

volve science concepts. They use proper grammar in

verbal and written communication to utilize language

arts skills, and all the students recognized the im-

portance of soft skills: manners, respect, honesty

and responsibility.

“They have to complete their inventory sheets at

the end of each shift before they can head outside

to play, so accepting responsibility for complet-

ing their ‘job’ is important to them,” Buchanan

said. “Their business has proven to be a valuable

learning tool.”

There is a national movement to include more

financial-related coursework, beginning in the

elementary school setting, to help students under-

Oak Mountain Academy students River Volk

and Quinton Garrett prepare the daily ice

cream inventory at the end of their sales shift.

Their fourth grade class learned the ins and

outs of running a business as part of a financial

literacy emphasis in Oak Mountain’s Lower

School.

Ozier Apparel celebrated the grand opening of its new location at 213 Avenue C in Carrollton with

an open house, ribbon cutting and plant tours. Ozier Apparel, supplier of embroidered apparel, has

been in operation since 1985. Originating in Bowdon, Ozier Apparel is a family run business and as

a full service apparel decor company, offers screen print and digital print as well as embroidery.

Carroll County Chamber officials, board members and members of the Ambassador Committee were

on hand for the celebration.

stand how money works in the world. Delisa Gledhill, Dean of the Lower School at Oak Mountain, not-

ed that financial literacy activities begin in their third grade economics unit.

“Our third graders chose a career and receive a salary based on that occupation. They then have to pre-

pare a budget, purchase a home and car, pay bills and taxes,” she explained. “The unit lasts an entire

semester and they get an early understanding of the value of money.

“I am excited about the creative, innovative ways our students get to learn while maintaining academic

rigor, honesty, respect, and responsibility,” Gledhill said.

These valuable hands-on learning experiences will serve Oak Mountain Academy students well as they

move into the future with the discipline to use their financial literacy skills every day.
