I returned from England on Thursday, and on my last Sunday over there theGospel was the parable of the sower, the parable which (as I wrote last week) isreally about our capacity to hear the word of God. In fact this year is one ofparticular thanksgiving in the English-speaking world for the availability of the

word of God in the Bible. It was in 1611, 400 years ago, that the King JamesBible in English was made available to the public, and the influence of thatversion is still felt in more modern versions and in our use of the Englishlanguage.

The King James Version was not the firsttranslation of the Bible into English, and not eventhe first official one. A Great Bible for readingin churches was commissioned for the Church ofEngland in the reign of Henry VIII and there wasanother, improved version, in 1568. Howeverthere were obvious mistakes in these texts so in1604 King James I convened 47 scholars toproduce a new translation based on the originalsources - translating the New Testament fromGreek and the Old Testament from Hebrew (notfrom the later Greek version of the Hebrew textwhich earlier translators had tended to use becauseit was easier for them). The title page states (withthe spelling of the time and rather an eccentricmixture of print styles):

THE HOLY BIBLE, Conteyning the Old Testament, AND THE NEW:Newly Translated out of the Originall tongues: & with the formerTranslations diligently compared and revised, by his Majesties speciallComandement. Appointed to be read in Churches. Imprinted at London

by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings most Excellent Majestie. ANNODOM. 1611 .

When the Church of England issued a new Book of Common Prayer in 1662the King James text replaced the earlier versions of the readings and as such wasauthorized by Act of Parliament. The KJV is often known as the AuthorizedVersion and although it has been replaced in more recent Church of Englandworship, many Protestants (even in America) treat it as if it is the only divinelyapproved version of the scriptures.

The Catholic Church in England had its own approved English translation, theDouay-Rheims, which was complete by 1609, and since then we, too, haveused more modern translations. However, anyone who speaks English has been

influenced by the King James version because phrases from it have passed intoour common language: when we say a sports team refused to give up theghost; or call someone the salt of the earth or a law unto herself; or tellsomeone in an argument You can't put words in my mouth, we are actuallyusing phrases from the 1611 Bible. We would find many parts of the KJV hardto read these days, and we have much more accurate translations, but English-speakers everywhere should be grateful for the seven year effort of King Jamessscholars which made the Bible a central part of the spiritual life of manygenerations of Christians and which continues to enrich our language.
