More than 225 HBA members and their families planted 1,100 trees at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center to commemorate Arbor Day on January 26. The project was sponsored and organized by the HBA’s Lawyers Against Waste Committee at the request of HBA presi-dent, Brent Benoit, who wanted to help replenish Houston’s crucial tree canopy that suffered devastation during last year’s drought.According to Joe Blanton, Conservation Director of the Houston Arbo-retum, the HBA project involved the largest number of volunteers and the largest number of trees planted in a single day by one group at the Arboretum. Many members brought their families, friends and staffers to the

event, planting in shifts from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. In addition to planting the trees, HBA members donated $12,260 to purchase the five-gallon trees. “When we challenge our members to help in the community, they al-ways come through in a big way,” said Benoit. “We wanted to help keep Houston green and replenish the trees lost during last year’s drought. Our members stepped up not only to buy trees, but also to bring out their families and friends to join in planting them.” For a complete list of donors and volunteers, visit the HBA website, www.hba.org.

The HBA’s first participation in the Souper Bowl of Caring met with great success in two areas – financial contributions and volunteer service at the Houston Food Bank. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement to fight hunger and poverty in local communities centered around the time leading up to the NFL’s Super Bowl Sunday. HBA members contributed $13,555 in cash donations, which translates into 40,665 meals for hungry families in Houston. Each $1 donation buys three meals. Nearly 100 Houston attorneys and family members volunteered at the Houston Food Bank on Saturday, January 19, 2013 from 9:00

a.m. until noon. Volunteers and their children worked bagging rice and beans, while other volunteers sorted and boxed donated food. In all, HBA volunteers pushed out 17,233 lbs. of food, which produced 14,360 meals for a typical family of four. “We challenged our members to help alleviate hunger in Houston by donating through the Souper Bowl of Caring and the Food Bank,” said HBA president, Brent Benoit. “As they always do, our members met both of those challenges in a big way.” For a complete list of Houston Food Bank volunteers, visit www.hba.org.

Volunteers Needed for Tax-A-Thon, March 13

Making Justice Happen: Veteran’s Story Featured on Channel 13 News Pro Bono volunteers from the law firm of Berg & Androphy stepped in on an emergency basis to stop an eviction and ended up reversing a foreclosure on behalf of a 91-year-old woman. Her story, reported by Deborah Wrigley, was featured on KTRK Channel 13 news on February 6. Severina Wilson is a 91-year-old widow, and a veteran of both World War ll and Korea. And through no fault of her own, she was about to lose her Pasadena home when Berg & Androphy attorneys Joel Androphy, Sarah Frazier and Kevin Clark stepped in to represent her pro bono and get the bank to clear up errors on their part that resulted in Ms. Wilson

almost losing her home, even though she had never missed a payment that was due.

A volunteer at the VA hospital, Ms. Wilson met HVL Executive Director Alissa Rubin Go-

mez at a veterans legal clinic there. HVL contacted Berg & Androphy about taking on her case. They were able to stop her from being evicted, then contacted the bank directly and resolved the issue, making sure that Ms. Wilson can live in the home she loves for the rest of her life. These volunteers truly made a difference, and so can you. To take a case, visit www.portal.makejusticehappen.org.

HVL Hosts Family Law Seminar, May 10 The Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program will present its 2013 Fam-ily Law Seminar on Friday, May 10, 2013 at South Texas College of Law, Garrett-Townes Auditorium, 1303 San Jacinto, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The program will feature board certified family law attorneys and other expert family law specialists speaking on a variety of topics relevant to this area of law. The program is approved for 6.5 hours of MCLE credit, includ-ing 1 hour ethics credit. The seminar is free to attorneys who volunteer to handle an HVLP case prior to the date of the seminar. Registrants who are currently providing pro bono legal services for an HVLP family law matter that was accepted after April 1, 2013 may also attend the seminar at no cost. Attorneys who do not wish to volunteer may attend the seminar by paying the $150 registration fee. The annual HVLP Family Law Seminar brings together attorneys with individuals who meet legal services program eligibility standards and who need legal representation. Attorneys who take these cases play an important role in ensuring equal access to the justice system. Contact Marisa Flores at 713-228-0735 ext: 140 for information on registering for the program.

The Houston Bar Association’s Elder Law committee is sponsoring a free Will-A-Thon open to all low-income Har-ris County seniors age 60 and over who would like to have a simple will prepared. The HBA is seeking attorneys who would like to volunteer for the program on April 16 and May 21 at the Third Ward Multi-purpose Center, located at 3611 Ennis, Suite 118. Volunteers will meet with clients initially on April 16, then execute their wills on May 21. Seniors interested in having a will prepared should call Houston Volunteer Lawyers at 713-228-0735 from February 25 through April 8, 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. to go through screening. If you are interested in providing peace of mind for low-income seniors in Harris County, please consider volunteering by using the form on the HBA website, www.hba.org or con-tacting Lucy Fisher Cain at 713-759-1133 or [email protected].
