Q1 from Anna, Galston, NSW: Anna wouldlike to know how Captain Cook Cruise isdifferent to other cruise lines.

Q2 from Peter in Ashwood, Melbourne:Peter has asked why the company sold toSea Link, and if it means Captain Cook Cruisesis no longer an Australian cruise line.

Qantas chaos sinks cruise dreamsThe global grounding of theQantas fleet caused hundredsof people to miss cruisesaround the world. QANTAS may be back in the air but manypeople are not on the ocean after failing toarrive at their departure ports. International travellers missed cruisesdeparting from Australia yesterday, andAustralians were left stranded in airports ontheir way to voyages overseas. CW was waiting for a flight in Brisbane onSaturday afternoon when the airline announcedthe immediate cancellation of all services. “We are trying to get to our first cruise but itlooks like that dream is over,” one guest said. Princess Cruises’ Sea Princess set sail fromSydney on Sunday, at 4pm as scheduled, without 59 booked passengers who wereaffected by the Qantas dispute. Carnival Australia is currently assisting some

of these passengers to join the ship inDunedin, New Zealand, on Thursday. Royal Caribbean decided to alter theschedule of Radiance of the Seas’ 18-nightvoyage from Fremantle to Sydney, delaying itsdeparture from yesterday to today to allowpassengers more time to reach the ship. Passengers who cannot reach the ship inFremantle have been offered the choice toboard in Adelaide on Saturday (5 November). As a result of the change, Radiance will nowskip its call at Esperance and will visit Albanyone day later than scheduled. P&O Australia cruises were not affected as allships are at sea. Adelaide resident “Izabelle” posted onOzCruiseClub’s forum that she was “shattered”to miss her Sea Princess holiday as all Virginand Jetstar flights had also sold out. “Unfortunately no transfer could be donewith Princess, but I have fixed up the Qantasrefund with Flight Centre and [travel]insurance will cover the cruise,” she said.

Port Review: Honfleur, Franceby Cruise Sales Manager, Rodger Condon

Honfleur is a lesser known French town with a mighty history. Located in Normandy, this areamade a tempting target for Viking invasions, and was the launching pad for the Norman conquestof England in 1066 CE, however, it’s along the coast where the darker contours of Normandyemerge with reminders of the greatest ever amphibious landing. From where your ship docks it’s just over 2km into town. Depending on your choice of cruise line,a shuttle bus service may be offered. Taxis are not readily available at the port, and most driversdo not speak English. Prepare and download a Honfleur walking map. Honfleur is an inviting little town, with a u-shaped harboured lined with all manner of boats, witha promenade of cafes and seafood restaurants. The town is closely linked to the founding ofQuebec City in Canada and the naming of Louisiana in the USA. There is churches, a maritimemuseum, and displays of art from Boudin, Monet, Dufy & Dubourg. Honfleur offers a pleasantdistraction with its narrow streets. Shops close for lunch between 12 & 3pm and you’ll need Euro or credit card. For most, an emotional visit to the D-Day landing beaches, the largest military operation inhistory, is their priority. On the morning of June 6, 1944, swarms of landing craft hit the beaches and tens of thousands ofsoldiers from the USA, UK, and other countries, invaded the coast of France. On sea and land,Australians commanded, piloted and fought their way forward, however, our main contributionwas in the air above. Your cruise line will offer tours to the Normandy beaches, with visits to Omaha Beach and theInvasion Museum. Also easily accessible from Honfleur is the town of Bayeux, the first French town to be liberatedin WWII and thankfully undamaged, where you can see the Bayeau Tapestry. Perhaps make yourway to Deauville, or one of the 100 most picturesque villages in France, Beuvron en Auge. You’rein Calvados country, which you’re sure to sample, along with incredible cheeses.

Sawyer Glacier Close Up

Cruise Review: Alaskan DreamBy: Louise Goldsbury

Zego ride in Hobart Bay 42-passenger Alaskan Dream

As sunset approaches, a black bear walks along the shore and suddenlyjumps into a stream, pouncing on a salmon. He splashes around a fewmore times, unaware or unconcerned that five tourists are only metresaway. I’m watching from the safety of my Zego runabout (like a large jet-ski)after zipping along the glassy water of Hobart Bay – new cruise line,Alaskan Dream Cruises’ exclusive playground. We have the whole site to ourselves overnight, with plenty of time togo sea-kayaking and riding ATVs around the old logging roads throughcoastal rainforest. In a destination that is famous for cramming six superliners into oneport, it’s a treat to be alone in Alaska. For the past few days, our small ship has escorted 35 passengersaround the glory of Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm, to view humpbackwhales, seals and sea otters, and to go zip-lining down North America’stallest flying fox. Last night we feasted on locally caught king crab at Orca Point Lodge –another wilderness retreat not used by any other cruise line. Only in Juneau is it impossible to avoid the crowds – but there is oneway to escape. From next year, Alaskan Dream will offer the option of a guided walkalong the Mendenhall Glacier, landing on the ice by helicopter. I snuck off for a preview, and it was the highlight of the week. To bewalking on a glacier is an amazing experience after days of gazing atthem. Wearing ice-friendly boots, we are led around the blue-white wonder, exploring its tall walls and deep crevices, and at a flowing river of water,we stop to scoop up a handful for a drink. Back onboard is another opportunity to imbibe an iceberg, when Ernie

the bartender uses a freshly crushed piece to create ‘glacier martinis’. I’mfairly sure this makes them healthy! The nightly social hour is a great way to meet your fellow passengers. My voyage saw an affable mix of American, British, Australian and NewZealanders. Owned by a Native Alaskan family, the company’s other standoutfeature is its cultural program, with expedition leaders and guestspeakers from the local Tlinglit tribes explaining the sights, history andtraditions of the region. Highly recommended.

Editor’s verdict If the thought of forging through Alaska in a big ship leaves you cold,Alaskan Dream provides the ultimate alternative. Without doubt, this wasmy favourite cruise of the year (out of 12 so far). The spectaculardestination, well-planned itinerary, exclusive access, fun activities, greatseafood, friendly crew and Tlinglit touches offer the whole package ofadventure, scenery, culture and comfort.

Book now for 2012 An eight-day ‘Inside Passage Sojourn’ on Alaskan Dream, departingfrom Sitka, is priced from US$3,229 per person twin-share includingguided shore excursions and activities (except the zip-line and glacierwalk), gourmet meals and wine with dinner. From next year, a StikineRiver jet-boat tour will be included. Three-day and six-day cruises are also available, priced from $1,495 perperson.
