Tas tourism laments loss of Spirit TASMANIA’S state govt hasconfirmed it will shut down theSydney-Devonport ferry service(TD yesterday), with the last trip tooperate on 27 Aug. Premier Paul Lennon said thegovt had “done everything possibleto support the service but we haveto recognise now that it is notsustainable.” There will be 18 more sailings onthe route, and the ship will also beconducting Melbourne serviceswhen Spirit I and II go into drydock in Jul and August. TT Line has advised thatpassengers currently booked onsailings from Sep onwards have anumber of options incl transferringto the Melbourne service at aspecial rate or a full refund withoutany cancellation fees. Affected passengers will becontacted starting from today. Worryingly, the main driver forthe decision appears to be a forecastof a downturn in domestic tourism. TT Line said most of the ship’sstaff will be employed on its otherferries but there will be a “relativelysmall number of redundancies”

which will initially be dealt with ona voluntary basis. The firm said it will now focus onits core business of the Melbourne-Devonport service, which willcontinue running as usual. However it’s also expected thatfares will rise on the Melbourneferries due to high fuel prices. The Tas govt says it’s committed$31m over four years to continuethe growth of the NSW and Qldmarket for the destination.

Today’s entry was sent in byMichael Kempen from AmericanExpress Business Travel in Adl; In 2001 I was over in Colorado,U.S.A on a 6 mth working holidayand had arranged with some friendsto go for a day trip to SteamboatSprings in the north of the state. I was quite excited to be going ona road trip as I love skiing. Anyway, we arrived at Steamboatand got our lift passes, and triedsome of the many different andchallenging ski runs. At one section on the ski hill wefound a jump to practice a few tricks. After hesitating numerous times,I decided I’d go for it and try myskills on the jump. I took off and went over thejump, landing nicely - and felt veryproud of myself..when all of asudden another skier appeared outof nowhere and I had to divertquickly to avoid collision!! In the process of avoiding thisskier I found myself off balance

and fell over in a heap with my rightknee twisting back the wrong way. I composed myself and got myselftogether with the intention ofcontinuing down the hill when allof a sudden i felt my right leg giveway and I fell down. I got to my feet a second timeand started skiing again, but thesame thing happened and thoughtto myself..”this can’t be right, something must be wrong here!”. At this stage I thought I shouldreally get myself to a ski lift hutand get checked out so I found aski lift operator and they arrangedfor me to be towed down the hill. Anyway, I was taken to the localSteamboat Springs hospital where Iwas examined and had a few testsdone on my right knee. A specialist eventually came inand informed me that I had seriouslydamaged my knee and had snappedmy anterior cruciate ligament. Upon hearing this news I wasdevastated, and knew my workingholiday had come to an abrupt end,as I couldn’t ski any more. I went home a few days laterfeeling very sorry for myself, butwanting a quick recovery. I had a knee reconstruction andam happy to say I returned toNorth America a year later tofinish the rest of my workingholiday with no recurring problems!
