The rapid acceptance seems to make the takeover inevitable, and directors of the listed firm say they’ve also now entered into a loan agreement with SDB under which it will provide $2.5m in short-term financing for working capital. The bid has also uncovered a dispute between Golden Tulip Hotels and THL in which the local operation is alleged to have failed to meet its development targets, meaning Golden Tulip is entitled to terminate the agreement. Golden Tulip and THL have cross-shareholdings with the ceo of Golden Tulip Franchising Ltd also on the THL board. It’s not certain what the fate of the recently launched Golden Tulip hotels in Melbourne would be if the representation deal is scrapped. The latest recommendation from THL is still that shareholders not accept the SDB offer.

AN INTERNATIONAL incidentis brewing over the refusal ofsome airlines to allow passengersto bring the national dish ofSweden on board their flights. Both British Airways and AirFrance have banned the carriageof ‘surstromming’, a fermentedherring delicacy, because they sayit should be classified as“potentially explosive.” Sustromming is created byfermenting fish in barrels forseveral months before canning it,and uninitiated pundits havedescribed its odour as reminiscentof rotten fish. Stockholm international airportis no longer selling the smellystuff because of the airline ban, adecision many Swedes are calling“culturally illiterate.” The head of the SwedishSurstromming Academy said anycarrier worried about explosivesand foul smells should first banbottles of champagne as well asstinky French cheese.

THIS probably won’t appear inany travel brochures. An article in last Sat’s UK DailyMirror described what couldbecome a sensational new touristattraction - an oak tree which had“abnormal growths” in the shapeof the Queen and the Duke ofEdinburgh as well as an “uncannylikeness of Prince Charles.” The newspaper said it couldn’tdisclose the location of the real-life Royal family tree “because offears it could attract druids.” However astute readers quicklyfigured out that it was, after all,April Fool’s Day.

TCF terminations THE Travel Compensation Fundhas terminated the participation ofRodney’s Travel Solutions Pty Ltdtrading as Travelscene Roselands,as well as branch location trading asTravelscene Hornsby, due to claimsbeing received. The TCF was alerted by acustomer who visited the office ofTravelscene Roselands only to findit closed with a sign advising theagency’s clients to contact the TCF.

Carroll to leave Reed RUCTIONS continue at travelpublication TravelTrade, with long-time editor David Carroll to leaveto start his own specialist travelcommunications company. Apparently Carroll resigned inJan but has agreed to stay on untilthe May launch of a new weeklytitle which will replace both TravelWeek and TravelTrade (TD Fri). MEANWHILE, travelBulletineditor (and former editor of TravelWeek) Ian McMahon has disputedReed’s claim to be launchingAustralia’s “first ever” weeklytravel trade publication. Former Travel Daily publisherMike Heard was one of the editorsof Travel Week which in its heydaywas actually a weekly magazine. He also published Inside Tourism, also known as ‘The Yellow Peril’weekly for over ten years beforelaunching Travel Daily in 1994.

Huge CATO response THE Council of Australian TourOperators meeting to be held thisThu in Melbourne looks likely to bea full house, with members lookingforward to hearing from formerHWT ceo Barry Mayo as well as anupdate from NZ by Lindy Christianof NZ’s CATO equivalent OTOC. CATO chairman Mike Hay hasreiterated the invitation for anyoneconsidering joining the body as fullor associate member to attend. RSVPs to Gina Dounis of AFTAon 02 9264 3299.

ACCORDING to Trafalgarpassenger questionnaires the samesix destinations were voted threeyears in a row by Australiantravellers as the place they wouldmost like to visit in the future. The surveys, which are completedby Trafalgar passengers at theconclusion of their tour, show thedestinations most appealing toAussie travellers include the USA,New Zealand, Greece, GreatBritain, Italy and Ireland. USA was ranked as the mostpopular destination with 16% ofpassengers selecting it in 2005,21% in 2004 and 18% in 2003. NZ was close behind with 16% in2005, 20% in 2004 and 17% in 2003. Interest in Greece, sparked by the2004 Olympics, placed it as thethird most popular destination,

whilst Britain consistently came 4th. Britain’s results are interesting asmost of Trafalgar’s tours start inLondon so this means theAustralian passengers planned onvisiting Britain more than once. Italy and Ireland were also verypopular destinations for Australian’sfuture travel plans ranking fifth andsixth respectively.
