Kellers drove their beastly '63 Dodge Polara to the event, which they both continue to race today, and they brought a number of photos of the Polara racing at Carlsbad. Signorelli raced his '74 Duster 440 there, but it wasn’t road-ready that day, so he brought his '73 Duster 340 race car, along with a trunk full of photos and trophies that his 440 won on the now-defunct racetrack. Woody Widman and Curt Bogdan brought their '70 Charger RT, another terror on the Carlsbad track, but before the duo bought it.

The Carlsbad Raceway memorial kick-off event on Tuesday, June 22, was bittersweet for Mopar Club SD members Jim Signorelli and Kristy and Jerry Keller, who roared down that track many, many times, and garnered many trophies before it was closed in 2004.

By Julie Walker

The memorial’s fundraising kick-off was the culmination of an 11-year effort to get the ok to erect a memorial to old raceway site, now a mixture of natural brush and modern-day commercial and industrial buildings. After the effort continued to run into roadblocks in Carlsbad, the City of Vista jumped in and helped to make it happen.

Therefore, the memorial will be located at 1347 Keystone Way in Vista’s Shadowridge business park—overlooking the area where the roar of hot rods, dragsters and motorcycles was a common occurrence for decades. It also was the site one of the world’s first skateboard parks. For those with a fondness for hops, the site is adjacent to Eppig Brewing and Dogleg Brewing Company in the business park.

Among those taking part in the kick-off event were many dignitaries, including 90-year-old Carlsbad Raceway founder Larry Grismer and two acclaimed in the racing world: drag racer extraordinaire Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, who was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1991, and motocross champion Broc Glover, who both raced on the Carlsbad track. Glover, a San Diegan, won six U. S. motocross Grand Prix titles—from 1976-88—including at Carlsbad Raceway in 1984.

The June 22 date for the kick-off was not just any old date. It was on June 22, 1980, that Marty Moats shocked the cycling world when Moats, basically unknown and unsponsored, won the U. S. Grand Prix of Motocross at the Carlsbad Raceway. Moats also was among the dignitaries taking part in the memorial fundraising kick-off.

Also attending were other SD Mopar Club members: Ray Peterson, Larry Engel, Debbie and Larry Johnson and Julie and Jeff Walker. The Johnsons’ '72 Challenger and Walkers’ '68 GTX were in the muscle-car classics display area, along with Widman’s and Bogdan’s '70 AAR Cuda.

Filmmaker Todd Huffman has been the guiding force behind the Carlsbad Raceway Memorial ever since he premiered his documentary “Carlsbad USGP: 1980” in San Diego in 2010. The film told the story of Moats’ surprising rise in the motorcyle racing world. So impressed was Huffman with the story of the Carlsbad Raceway that he decided a permanent memorial was needed. He began his campaign with $4,000 in seed money from the raceway’s original builder, HG Fenton.

Eleven years later, and finally, with the blessing and assistance of the City of Vista and in conjunction with the non-profit Road2Recovery for injured athletes, the big push for donations has begun. The memorial is estimated to cost $250,000, and custom engraved bricks are being sold for $250 and $500— to become forever part of the memorial’s platform.

To order a brick, go to road2recovery.com and click on the Carlsbad Raceway Memorial logo. Our club already has purchased a 4-inch by 8-inch brick that will say “Mopar Club of San Diego.” The raceway memorial not only will feature a platform extending out from the overlook but will include printed displays with QR codes that visitors will be able to scan for videos about the raceway’s history. The hope is to open the exhibit sometime in 2022.
