WINTER NEWSLETTER President’s Message

Winter Greetings BBHHS Alumni ...

Well, if I thought 2019 was busy and full of changes, 2020 offered quite the opposite. I remember sitting at our March meeting, busily making plans for our upcoming summer events over Alumni weekend. We had guests from the Brecksville-Broadview Hts. Schools Foundation with us to give us more information on what they do, and how the two organizations might compliment each other. gift payments, which is a great idea for a child, sibling, or fellow classmate. Our Pollen Count newspaper is mailed once a year to dues paying members only, and it goes out in the Spring. Last year our newsletter was 60 pages full of information celebrating classes, information on upcoming reunions, and pictures from those just past, memorabilia, community stories/history, in- formation to stay connected, and so much more! My thanks to Annette Hess Mantkowski ‘74 for always filling the pages with newsworthy and interesting reads! A year subscription is just $5, but you can get 5 years for just $20! Don’t miss out on this ... the Pollen Count is a hallmark of school alumni newspapers in our area.

Our 2020 Gallery of Achievement Class of Inductees are another superb group of people who have walked the halls of BBHHS and gone on to contribute to society in many different ways, not only through their career path, but through the ways they gave back to their communities and beyond. Due to Covid-19, they will be honored and celebrated in the Fall of 2021. It’s important to note, that we take nominations from YOU, those who know them and know what they’ve done post graduation. If you know a graduate who fits the criteria, please take a moment to fill out the nomination form and submit it. We are always taking nominations and will be meeting to select another class after the first of the year. Faculty members are also accepted ... did you have an exceptional teacher, someone who went above and beyond that you’d like to see recognized? Now’s the time to highlight these people. Thanks to Don Faulhaber ‘58 for his continued work as committee chair.

As mentioned above, we had to go without our 2020 BBHHS Alumni Weekend, with the exception of the Annual Bud Wisnieski Golf Outing, but we are earnestly planning for our 2021 events and hoping you’ll join us for a fun weekend! As always, the weekend begins with the Annual Bud Wisinieski Golf Outing on Friday, June 25th, 2021, followed by the Alumni Reunion Dinner Friday evening. The event is held at St. Michael’s Woodside in Broadview Hts., offering a great venue with great food. While we’ll honor both the Class of ‘70 (missed in 2020), and the Class of ‘71 for their 50th years, this is an ALL-class reunion! Grab your classmates, reserve your table(s) and enjoy a fun night filled with memorabilia, trivia, a 50/50 raffle and reminiscing with classmates through the years. Thanks to Brenda Fraley Kolchin ‘62 for organizing this event.

The Annual Pancake Breakfast, our only fundraiser, follows on Saturday and Sunday mornings, June 26th and 27th. Join us on Brecksville Square for a delicious pancake breakfast, served both days from 9am-noon. If you’re interested in helping behind the scenes, contact our chairperson Lisa Greb ‘83.

As most of you already know, we lost our beloved principal, Mr. Walter “Bud” Wisnieski, this year. While I attended BHS, he was just my principal and a man I always respected. It was in my years as an adult, that I learned what an extraordinary man he was. Reading the piece written about him in our 2018 Pollen Count, and talking with him a bit at the 2019 Alumni Dinner, showed me many different sides of a wonderful man. In April, he marked his 100th birthday. I collected many greeting cards from classmates through his years at BBHHS to deliver to him. He was touched to take them from my husband, and stood chatting with him at his door for about ten minutes. On his birthday weekend, friends organized a drive-by birthday parade past his home, and he sat at the end of his driveway waving at each passerby. He was full of life, and said he was ready to take on his next 100 years. Sadly, he passed away June 30, 2020.

Lastly, I’d like to mention the beginnings of our connection with the BBHHS Schools Foundation. The Foundation has distributed more than $400,000 for the benefit of students since it was founded in 1992.

These enrichment grants and scholarships come from donations, its endowment funds, and profit from the annual fundraiser. Grants and scholar-ships help both students currently in school and those taking off to college to pursue their dreams. We can be a benefit to the Foundation by reaching the Alumni who have had the advantage of a fine BBH education. We may be of help in a couple of ways; of course by an individual donation, but think further. Do you work for a company who has monies or grants to be used for education, or know an individual who is looking to invest in the future of education? Even small amounts go a long way and monies reach many students in the district. The benefit for the Alumni Association, is that our connection makes us visible through their organization, which touches children and parents from kindergarten up. That visibility highlights our credibility in the community long before they are graduating and moving on, and hopefully, helps grow our membership. We encourage you to be a BBHHS Alumni Association member first and then, if you can, look into ways you might be able to help the Foundation. Please tune in to their "Bee Invested" Telethon on March 11th. More information can be found at their website bbhsf.org.

As always, I’d like to thank our board, committee chairs, and “worker bees” who keep us running. We’ve made great strides over the years to be one of the best Alumni Associations in the area. I appreciate each and every one of you, and what you do ... thank you!! Please join us at our next meeting, March 9, 2021 at 7pm. Meeting location or Zoom to be announced ... watch the website, or your email for details.

Good Riddance, 2020 ... Wishing you all the very best in 2021!! Once a Bee ... Always a Bee!jeanne Jeanne Carouse Travaglianti ‘75 President, BBHHS Alumni Association

Announcements The 2021 BBHHS Alumni Weekend and Reunion Dinner

The weekend begins with the Annual Bud Wisinieski Golf Outing on Friday, June 25th, 2021, followed by the Alumni Reunion Dinner Friday evening. The event is held at St. Michael’s Woodside in Broadview Hts., offering a great venue with great food. We'll honor both the Class of ‘70 (missed in 2020) and the Class of ‘71 for their 50th years. Remember this is an ALL-class reunion, so grab your classmates, reserve your table(s), and enjoy a fun night filled with memorabilia, trivia, a 50/50 raffle and reminiscing with classmates through the years.

The Alumni Association must conduct a very short meeting to elect officers for the following year. This is the only event where the Alumni Association has many dues-paying members who can vote for the new slate of officers. We will continue to celebrate with the 50-year class as our Alumni Reunion Dinner will serve as their kickoff event for their 50-year reunion weekend. They will speak for a short time. More information and the reservation form for the Alumni Reunion Dinner can be found at https://bbhhsalumni.org/alumni-all-class-reunion/

We will also have a collection of memorabilia around the room. We are asking for any memorabilia you may still have from your school days, literally from elementary school through high school. Any kind of uniform, programs, letter jackets/sweaters, photos, pins, class photos, dance photos, sports photos, medals, yearbooks, etc., absolutely anything from attending BBH schools that we could display. We would like to borrow the above-mentioned items for the Alumni Reunion Dinner. If you have something you’d like to loan us, please contact Jeanne Carouse Travaglianti '75 at 440-667-9803 or [email protected] or Annette Hess Mantkowski ‘74, 330-730-2478, [email protected]

If you have any questions about the event please contact Lisa Greb, chairperson, at 330–461-6622 or [email protected]. This is the Alumni Association‘s only fundraiser.  Throughout the years many alumni have volunteered to keep this event a part of the Brecksville Home Days.  We need your support to continue this tradition. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact either Annette Hess Mantkowski at 330–730-2478 or [email protected] or Jeanne Travaglianti at 440-667-9803 or [email protected].

Gallery of Achievement The Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Alumni Association established the Gallery of Achievement Awards Program in 2002 to honor Brecksville-Broadview Heights graduates and former faculty who have distinguished themselves through community service, personal development and vocational accomplishment. The spirit of caring, participation and excellence continues to be what has given BBHHS graduates the tools to be good citizens. Teachers are involved beyond their formal classroom instruction. They are role models. Their guidance and encouragement provide a positive influence that prepares students for adult life. The Gallery of Achievement Program provides the opportunity to recognize graduates and former faculty who have contributed to their communities. Wanted: The Pollen Count Articles *****Due Date: February 15, 2021*****

What Was Your First Job? During this strange and trying 2020, there have been no reunions or alumni functions to report. It was suggested to me by Suzanne Young '75, our corresponding secretary, to ask alums about their first junior high or high school jobs. I have received a lot of responses! I am asking that you send me the particulars of your first job in junior high or high school. Please include the following:

Name of workplace and LocationWage, job title if you had one and job responsibilities

memory of this experienceIf you want to join in the fun, please email, Annette Hess Mantkowski at [email protected] with job details! These are so much fun to read!

Childhood Games and ToysOver the last few years, we have reminisced about our childhood and the games and toys that were our favorites. My two favorite games/toys were Play-Doh and Crayola crayons. The one toy I repeated asked for but never received from Santa was a Chatty Cathy doll. I must have asked for this doll for several years. I think Santa decided this doll cost too much!

We have heard about paper dolls, toy train sets, jacks and building blocks to name a few, This year we are asking you to remember and share with us some of your favorite games or toys that were a big part of your childhood. It can be a toy, a board game, or any indoor or outdoor game you enjoyed playing.

For the 2021 Pollen Count, I ask all of you to think about your favorite games and/or toys. Please send your memories and/or photos to me at [email protected]. It will be fun reading about what other alums played with in their younger years!

Happily, Ever After After doing some investigating in the alumni database, we have discovered that over 400+ couples have either married someone from their graduating class or married someone from a different graduating class. We ask that you share with us how you met, when you met, where you went on your first date and how long the two of you have been together. Please include “then and now” photos of the two of you, in jpeg format. We had many couples respond to our request. These stories will be published in the 2021 Pollen Count. This article was a fun one to read! Please email your story to Annette Hess Mantkowski at [email protected].

Advertise in The Pollen Count Advertising is open to BBHHS graduates only. Send us your business card with your year of graduation and your full name, including your maiden name, written on the back of the card only. Please send your donation of $20.00 per business card to the BBHHS Alumni Association, 6380 Mill Road, Broadview Hts., OH 44147. These must be received no later than February 15, 2021. If you have any question regarding advertising, you can contact Denise Turk Bowler ’71 at [email protected].

Alumni Events Brecksville 2021 Round Up I hope everyone has been staying healthy and well in these trying times.  Shirley and I have been working on the 50th Anniversary Brecksville Roundup for quite sometime.  The Pandemic hasn’t helped as everyone knows but, life must go on.  Since this is our 50th Year of Roundup’s we are expecting a rather large group so the early bird gets a seat. We are hoping that by March all of the restrictions for seating will be lifted and things can be back to whatever the new normal will be. You will notice that this year’s Roundup will be limited to 100 attendees so you must get your reservation in early.  The last page of the document has the information to send in with your payment .

At the end of this newsletter you will find information for next March 6, 2021 Roundup.   All of you are welcome to attend our gathering. We have tried to include everything that you need to know about the event but in case we missed something, please let us know at [email protected]

Reunions

Class of 1960 - 60th Reunion Betty Fancsalsky Ziegler says, “Well, the virus sure messed us up in 2020 so let’s plan on 2021 to have our 60th plus 1 reunion. We will celebrate during the Brecksville Home Days which will be June 25-27, 2021 . We are planning on attending the BBHHS Alumni Association’s Alumni Reunion Dinner on Friday, June 25th, 2021 at Woodside Event Center at St. Michael’s in Broadview Heights, and enjoy their annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, June 27th . Hopefully, these events will take place this coming year so count on it, and plan on coming with bells on!

We are still missing several classmates: Judy Nosek Cooper, Nancy Piskac Lester, Judy Minnich, Karen Kloka O’Connor, Bette Scott, Linda Larkman Seber and Joyce Vopat. We have tons of time into this so please help us............hugs to all and stay well. My email is [email protected].

It should be a good time for all. If you are unable to join us for all events, please join us for the events that you can attend. Additional information will be forthcoming. It will be great to see everyone again at our 60th reunion even though we are not that old yet! Please contact Betty Fancsalsky Ziegler at 440-237-2125 or [email protected] for more information.

Class of 1961 - 60th Reunion This year of 2020 has been historic. We all have experienced an upheaval in our lives due to a pandemic that none of us would have ever imagined. The Covid-19 virus invaded our country and has caused delays and cancellation of all kinds of events including many Brecksville Class Reunions as well as Brecksville Home Days and the Annual Alumni Dinner. We have been wondering what is in the future for 2021 Alumni activities, including our 60th Class Reunion planned for June

That question is difficult to answer since no one knows what the Covid-19 situation will be by June. If things settle down and with a possible vaccine out, then it is likely we will go forward with making reunion plans. We should know more by March but probably not before then.

Meanwhile, we are all on hold, but you should mark the weekend of June 25-27 down on your calendars as a “possible” Class Reunion date. If the country seems to be moving back to a normal state, then we anticipate a large turnout for an Alumni event on that weekend in June. The reason is that last year’s events that were cancelled will likely be rescheduled for this same weekend in 2021, so there could be a record setting Alumni Weekend and a chance to see many Brecksville graduates from other classes. It would be an opportunity you wouldn’t want to miss.

With that thought in mind, we should concentrate on what our reunion plans would be in the hopes that it will occur. We all had a great time at our 50th and 55th reunions and we’d like to make our next milestone memorable as well. Plans right now are to have our reunion in conjunction with the Annual Alumni Reunion Dinner on the weekend of June 25 – 27, 2021. Tentative activities are as follows:

Thursday evening, June 24 – Informal gathering at The London Pickle Works on Fitzwater Rd. near Route 21. (Alumni from other classes often gather here on Thursday evenings.)Friday, June 25 – Annual Bud Wisniewski Golf Outing.Friday Evening, June 25 - We will sit together at the Alumni Reunion Dinner and be honored as the “60th Reunion Class.”Saturday, June 26 - We will meet at the annual Alumni Pancake Breakfast by the old town hall. Possibilities for the afternoon are to either have a picnic in the park as we have in the past, or schedule a tour of the area on Lolly the Trolley to see all of the changes that have occurred in the 60 years since we graduated. Please provide your input on this as we finalize our plans. If we decide on the Trolley ride, we’ll need a volunteer to take care of the reservations and deposits. We are also reaching out to other classes to see if there might be interest in having a combined picnic.Saturday Evening, June 26 - If there is enough interest we can gather at the London Pickle Works in the evening and continue to reminisce as we order food and beverages from the restaurant.Sunday, June 27 – Sunday morning will be the Alumni Pancake Breakfast with one last chance to visit and remember the “good old days”.

If it is a GO for a reunion, information regarding lodging accommodations, registration for the banquet, etc. will be sent to classmates at an appropriate time in 2021.

For those of you familiar with Zoom, we are considering trying to set up a Class of ’61 Zoom meeting early in 2021.

Our Class of ‘61 Alumni Committee right now consists of Jim Claire, Tim Klodnick, Bob Dostal, Art Mann, and Steve Knox. We would always welcome other interested class members to join the committee.

Those with additional ideas, please call Jim Claire at (607) 661-0289, Bob Dostal at (336) 409-6306 or Tim Klodnick at (440) 567-4268.

Class of 1966 - 55th Reunion Celebrating a year later is nothing new for the Class of 1966. Our first reunion -"10+1"- was actually 11 years after graduation. So, to make sure everyone can gather safely, our "55+1" weekend celebration will be in 2022. We encourage those who feel comfortable attending the 2021 Alumni Association banquet to do so. Hopefully, a vaccine will be available by then. Here’s to science! Stay safe, wear a mask, and keep socially distant! Contact us via email at [email protected]. You know you’ll be getting an email update from us!
