She had a great response including 13 Life members and 37 Signature members and most importantly a lot of on line comment. The cost worked out to 23 cents per survey. Before coming to any overall conclusions apart from the overwhelming response to find ways to expand membership more detailed analysis is needed.

Charles advised that the SDC has issued a second lease for 2014 requiring a deposit plus penalties for non payment. It is effective Feb-ruary 1st. He added that signed copies are back with SDC. Newsletter; Frank reported that the next Newsletter is due out shortly with the following edition coming out in March. To cut the cost and effort of hard copies a questionnaire is to be sent out requesting members to advise the editor if they unable to gain access to a computer. It’s That Time of Year

AgainAnnual Signature Members fees ($35) are due now. You can either send a check made out to PSG C/O Eric Richter, Treasurer, 700 W. Bar-rett St, Seattle, WA 98119 or they can pay on line when the new website is up but the charge will be $36.35.

NEW Committee:

Call for Volunteers

We’re putting together a commit-tee that will review the rules of our organization for pos-

sible update recommendations. We’ll investigate our Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Standing Rules and our 501c3 certification. This is mainly a research effort so we’ll learn a lot of useful stuff on the way to improving our organiza-tion. If you’re interested, e-mail Dan Riley at [email protected] in the next week or so.

PSGNWA’sSurvey Results 2014

Thank you all for your participation and responses to the survey last month. With 44% participation by the membership, your input and ideas will help

develop better programs and activities based on your inter-ests.

Overall, your responses indicated expanding the member-ship at a modest pace, with 76% in favor of developing a new student membership category, 12% neutral and 12% dissent. 75% expressed no interest in buffet and alcohol services at meetings with an overwhelming 90% and above to develop stronger educational artist programs. 75% wished a mentor to artist program. Ideas expressed to improve activities and yearly programs are being utilized as we plan the 2014 calendar. Ideas included model-drawing sessions, several paint out opportunities throughout the region and artist workshops.

Regarding location change, the Seattle Design Center is up for sale and a committee has been formed to evaluate leads we have been given to determine a new home. There are other opportunities being coordinated by other 501c3 gal-leries that we may be able to participate in, as well. Meet-ings will continue every other month on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm at the SDC until further notice.

Regarding fundraising for the year, a committee is being developed to spearhead an online national juried exhibit and/or auction this fall. Most members favored strengthening gallery sales over auction and juried show. With a better location, we are hopeful to meet this demand.

As for committee participation and volunteer commitment, thank you everyone for showing the areas of interest you might be able to share your talents. Phil Levine will be con-tacting you to ask your participation on behalf of the orga-nization. We really need your help! 56% members favored 10-12 volunteer hours per year vs. 44% favored 15-20 vol-unteer hours. Planning and acting for our future requires increasing participation. Please consider sharing your time and talents with us this year.

On behalf of the board and myself, thank you again for your time and consideration. Survey participation was a success! Your input is directing us as we plan for our future!Sincerely, Katherine Troyer Vice President

Welcome New MemberLinda Hoyt

Drawing and painting has always felt like a natural way to express myself. I remember as early as age seven my mother having

me sit outside with a sketch book and encouraging me to draw a grove of birch trees. Art school at the University of Michigan was a logical progres-sion and led me to jobs in graphic art, teaching art and a commercial and residential interior design practice.

Always knowing I would ultimately pursue paint-ing as a full time career, in 2006 I began to study with Cary Jurriaans at the Fall City Fine Art Studio (now the Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio) www.whidbeyislandfas.com. I continued to study for six years in a part time program at the Georgetown Atelier www.georgetownatelier.com with Tenaya Sims, drawing and painting using graphite, char-coal, and oil paint and focused on learning to work in a representational manner doing figures and still-life.

I have taken professional workshops with a number of accomplished artists that have helped further my development. Some of the most inspiring and influential were: Michael Grimaldi www.michaelgrimaldi.net for his teaching of anatomy and structure, Henry Stinson www.henrystinson.com for his use of color, and David Jon Kassan www.davidkassan.com for his approach to figure drawing.

I am at a point now where I want to experiment with my style; looser, bolder colors, and different subject matter and composi-tion. I look forward to the continuing journey.

Hall Sutherland

RememberedPSGNWA Life Member, Hal Sutherland passed away on January 16, 2014 due to health com-plications related to gall bladder surgery. Hal was 84 years old. Born in 1929, Somerville, Massa-chusetts. Hal Sutherland’s fascination with the art world began at a very early age in his life when the Milkman and the Garbage collector alike both drove horse drawn vehicles past his home. His fascination with the sight of those horses became an obsession which has followed him throughout his art career. He’d often wait at the curb outside his home in Massachusetts to be close by as the wagons stopped on their house-to-house visits. He spent hours sketching those horses with their memories remaining promi-

nent in his mind as he later traveled through-out the world of art. A passionate dream to be mounted on a wiry mus-tang galloping across vast prairies has been fulfilled in many of his paintings and shared’ with collectors who

enjoy the immense versatility in his subject matter, which visits the many worlds of the Equine throughout our Country’s history and the part the horse has played. When viewing his works, there is always a strong statement, be it humorous, or relative to an emo-tional era.

Though the dream of becoming an artist filled his soul, the reality of survival soon became evident in the form of a variety of menial

occupations, dish washing, mes-senger work etc. But throughout this period the quiet fantasies and dreams he cherished led him to California still following his child-hood dream to become an artist. Studied at the Art Center of Design in Los Angeles and in 1954 he began a distinguished career with Walt Disney Studios where his knowledge of horses placed him in a select group working on Sleep-ing Beauty. He later went on to become an Emmy award winning television producer and director in Hollywood. Yet, despite his success in the field of animation, those childhood dreams still filled his thoughts till finally, he and his family moved to the state of Wash-ington where he finally embarked on a full time painting career in 1974. His works have since been featured in several national maga-zine articles and PBS a documen-tary special. Traveling along this path he became fascinated with the historical world of the Pioneers who sacrificed so very much to contribute to the lives we all live today.
