1,000 CRANES FUNDRAISER FOR JAPAN

As you all know, Japan has been hit hard. As we sit and watch the horrific images and events unfold in Japan, our thoughts turn to those who need help on the ground now. The martial arts have deep roots with the people of Japan and the Japanese culture. We feel the urge to help in some small way.

West End Wado-Kai Karate dojo has combined forces with Sendokan Aikido, (with whom we share a dojo space) and the RED CROSS. A direct website portal to the RED CROSS has been organized. For every $3 donation logged through their portal, our students will be making an origami crane. Our goal is $8,000 by April 10th. As of April 3rd, we had raised $6,207. Please help us... help the Japanese people, through such a reputable organization as the RED CROSS.

You are invited to join us Sunday, April 10, noon-2pm at the dojo. The hand-made cranes will be displayed as well as to share thoughts and prayers for the future of Japan.

Stick Arts By Sensei Freeman Thurston 6th Dan

The Stick Arts in Aikiwa Karate doh / Kubudo ancient weapons training For the public at large, there is the perception (most of it erroneous, unfortunately) and, consequently, much discussion about the utilization of martial arts training, in general, for actual street-fighting and self-defense. That is, a preoccupation with “Jutsu”, rather than with the “Doh”; the formalized empty-hand fighting and self defense training methods practised in the traditional martial arts dojo. The use of weapons in the martial arts, similarly, often comes up for discussion.

The Sticks Arts The professional soldier always had his means of self-defense, principally his weapons of choice and, as a fallback to this, his empty-handed fighting-arts training and related techniques. The common man, on the other hand, without any training in any aspect of martial arts (neither empty hands, nor weapons), had evolved to use any means at hand to attack or to defend himself. In this context sticks have for centuries been readily available weapons (defense/offense tools). The sticks (together with stone throwing) represent the earliest form of a weapon defence system known to man. With respect to martial arts weapons training in today’s world, and fighting techniques development within most modern martial arts systems, the stick represents the most popular, and adaptable, weapon training system.

Stick Arts development in Bahamas & Caribbean Aikiwa (Wado Kai) Karate Sticks come in all sizes and shapes that generally can be adapted by the martial artist to practically any situation, if he has some familiarity with a system of stick fighting.

The fighting traditions of most Asian countries divide sticks into three broad categories, depending on the length of short, medium and long. Some fighting traditions specialize in the use of only one or two of the various lengths of sticks. Bahamas and Caribbean Aikiwa (Wado) Karate doh utilizes three stick training systems in its Sticks Arts weapons development training system. The first is the Sho jo (stick about three feet long), under development within Bahamas and Caribbean Aikiwa (Wado) Karate. The second is Shindo Ryu (specialized stick art system), three feet long, developed and advanced within aegis of Toronto Wado-Kai Karate, and affiliate Wado karate organizations This system is the brainchild of our late Master, Sensei Masaru Shintani, to whom we owe this stick art legacy…

Page 14: JANUARY 2011 - Toronto Wado-Kai€¦ · Sensei Andre Beauregard would like to congratulate the following karate students who have received a new belt: Maya H. – Shodan-Ho (J.H.

as well as the basic tenets of our continuing evolution of the Wado-Kai Karate system.

Admittedly, here in the South (…way Deep South), we have developed our own, rather unique renditions of Shindo katas and related technical developments, but still based on the bedrock techniques I gleaned during my training with our late Sensei Shintani, Sensei Dave Manara, and the Toronto Wado-Kai. I must, though, commend Sensei Steve Borda for the influences he has had (and still has) in his patience and personal efforts in my earlier training and introductions to stick arts back in the early 1990’s in Toronto. I also salute Sensei Dods and Stark, Ray Kennedy and Jerry McPherson as peers under tutelage of Sensei Manara.

The third is Bo Jutsu (as developed and advanced within Bahamas Aikiwa (Wado Kai) Karate), about six feet long, and based on Japanese, Chinese, and Okinawan ancient weapons training and techniques applications. Here, I have taken liberties in truly optimizing our ancient weapons system training and development techniques consistent with, and reflective of my vision for Aikiwa Karate.

Modern Sticks Art training Depending on the emphasis that individual martial arts instructors wish to pursue, sticks art training may be emphasized as a “Doh” (“Way”) form, or as a “Jutsu” (“Art” or “Technique”) form. Many martial arts instructors often take philosophical concepts for training development from both areas. In Bahamas and Caribbean Aikiwa (Wado) Karate, our emphasis is on the ‘Doh” – however, the ‘Jutsu” is just as important a development and pursuit, but not our ultimate goal.

OUR THANKS TO TOURNAMENT PARTICIPANTS! Sensei Lenore Eng, Shodan

(1ST Degree Black Belt)

Many thanks to all who participated, challenged themselves, and learned by the experience at the Thornhill Toronto Wado-Kai Tournament in February.

A special thanks to the members of Oshawa dojo who came forward to inspire us with their talents and demos. Sensei Natalie Garcia and Susan Kuczkowski eloquently opened with our national anthem to provide a perfect beginning. Kathryn Kuczkowski, Daina Als and Michael Kuczkowski 'kicked off' the tournament by performing Shindo kata Cho-Boe-Tie with intensity and crispness of form; and kept it up as they continued to challenge and compete. Many thanks to Sensei Jose-Carlos Garcia who performed the Jo Kata, TandoKu San and whose enthusiasm filters all the way through their dojo.

As a reflection of the co-operation within the TWKK organization, MANY THANKS to the combined efforts of Nadia Corrado for taking the many videos and to Sensei Leaton Bernard for the time-consuming dedication of uploading. The photos were a combined effort of Sensei Ron Sheyan and Dan Kuczkowski. The photos of the tournament are posted on the TWKK website in the 'Upcoming Events' section or by clicking on the link below. Please forward this information to students as a reference for promoting tournament participation and as a tool for learning, and a place to download the memories captured.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/33364500@N06/sets/72157626056359553/

Our learning in the martial arts is a personal journey, but the more we share our talents and enthusiasm the better and stronger we all become. We urge you take advantage of the tournament forum to continue to challenge yourselves, as well as your students.

A WORD ON TRAINING IN OTHER THAN KARATE

Sensei Dave Manara, Kudan

(9th Degree Black Belt)

Training in karate at the Toronto Wado-Kai Karate clubs requires two to three sessions a week to maintain proficiency and growth. Training in other martial arts may be looked upon as a compliment to karate, but it is to be extra to your regular training and should not interfere with your classes. Holding separate classes or extending a class for the purpose of training in other techniques or Kobudo is permissible. Having a special class or demonstration occasionally for interest or for exposure may help to expand the students’ interests in the martial arts.

A good example is when I taught Shindo to the black belts. It was not part of the formal Yudansha class. It had its own classes for about a year for volunteers interested in training with the Shindo stick. (Shin means “stem”, as in extension. I collaborated with Sensei Shintani in the development of Shindo).

Training with weapons or in other martial art styles is of interest to many karate-kas. The Sensei with training in or who are practicing with weaponry may do so separately from the formal karate class in order not to confuse the karate training with Kobudo or any other martial art.
