Tune-ups areimportant

Most of us know that regular mainte-nance is key to a well-running vehicle. That's why we get our oil changed, haveour tires rotated and so forth. Anotherimportant part of the regular maintenanceschedule is the tune-up. Because the inter-nal workings of vehicles have changed somuch over the years, the definition of atune-up may vary from the simple replace-ment of spark plugs to the complete over-haul of several areas within the vehicle.

Most experts agree that the best tune-upsinvolve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emis-sions. Not every shop defines a tune-up inthis way, however. Generally, the moreinvolved the tune-up, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it is impor-tant that you find out what it will entail andhow much it will cost. Be wary of reallylow estimates; chances are the shop is push-ing for your business and the final bill forthe tune-up will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not alldrivers know what a tune-up is and requestone on the assumption that it will fix what-ever is wrong with their vehicle. They willask why you think your vehicle needs atune-up and go from there. You may dis-cover that what you really need are newbattery cables rather than new spark plugs.

Once you have several estimates, sitdown and compare them. Select the shopwhose estimate includes a fairly thoroughinspection at a fair price. You want to makesure that when you drive away from theshop your vehicle is running smoothly andefficiently.0

The term "tune-up" means differentthings to different people. Keep that inmind as you shop around for estimates.Know what you are getting before you takeyour vehicle in, and if you are getting atune-up for any reason other than mainte-nance issues, relay that information to theshop.

Good brakesare essential

What do you consider to be the mostimportant part of your vehicle? If you thinkit's the brakes, you are correct becausewithout the ability to stop your vehicle, you're like a projectile in search of a target. That's why it's important to pay attention toyour brakes.

Not every brake problem warrants areplacement. Before buying new brakes, you should check the level of your brakefluid. If it is low, fill it up and pump thebrakes a couple of times while the car isrunning. Slowly drive the car around to seeif the brakes have improved. You may justneed a new brake line. To detect a leak, park your vehicle overnight, move it a fewfeet in the morning and look for a wet spot.Even a small leak can affect your brakes'function.

Fall in love with pumpkinsBy Angela Shelf Medearis

A large pile of bright-orange pumpkins is my visual celebra-tion of fall. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word "pepon,"meaning "large melon." "Pepon" was nasalized by the French into"pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."American colonists changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The ori-gin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off thepumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes.

The bright-orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway thatpumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant: beta-carotene.Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitaminA in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene per-forms many important functions in overall health.

Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containingbeta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types ofcancer and helps protect against heart disease. Beta-caroteneoffers protection against other diseases, as well as some degenera-tive aspects of aging.

To select a pumpkin, look for one with 1 to 2 inches of stemleft. If the stem is cut down too low, the pumpkin will decayquickly or may be decaying at the time of purchase. Avoid pump-kins with blemishes and soft spots. It should be heavy, althoughshape is unimportant. A lopsided pumpkin is not necessarily a badpumpkin. Figure one pound of raw, untrimmed pumpkin for eachcup finished pumpkin puree.

To prepare the pumpkin for cooking, spread newspaper overyour work surface. Start by carefully removing the stem with asharp knife. If you are planning to roast the pumpkin seeds, smashor drop the pumpkin on a hard surface to break it open. In anycase, remove the stem and scoop out the seeds and scrape awayall of the stringy mass. A messy job, but it will pay off.

You can cook the pumpkin by boiling, steaming, roasting orusing the microwave to create your own fresh pumpkin puree.Directions for cooking and preparing pumpkin puree are as fol-lows:

Boiling/Steaming Method: Cut the pumpkin into rather largechunks. Rinse in cold water. Place pieces in a large pot with abouta cup of water. The water does not need to cover the pumpkinpieces. Cover the pot and boil for 20 to 30 minutes or until tender,or steam for 10 to 12 minutes. Check for doneness by poking witha fork. Drain the cooked pumpkin in a colander. Reserve the liq-uid to use as a base for soup.

Oven Method: Cut pumpkin in half, scraping away stringymass and seeds. Rinse under cold water. Place pumpkin, cut-sidedown, on a large cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for one hour or untilfork tender.

Microwave Method: Cut pumpkin in half, place cut-side downon a microwave-safe plate or tray. Microwave on high for 15 min-utes, then check for doneness at 1-2 minute intervals until forktender.

Preparing the Puree: Allow cooked pumpkin to cool. Removethe peel using a small sharp knife and your fingers. Place pump-kin in a food processor and puree, or alternately use a food mill, ricer, strainer or potato masher. Freeze and store in one-cup por-tions in a small freezer bag for up to one year.

Pumpkin Nut Bars1 cup cooked pumpkin puree, fresh or canned1/2 cup whipped butter2 egg whites, slightly beaten2 cups oats1 cup brown sugar, packed1/2 cup sweetened, shredded coconut, toasted (*see

note below)1/2 cup wheat germ1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. In a large bowl, beat egg whites slightly; add pumpkin and

melted butter or margarine beat until smooth. In another bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, coconut, wheat germ and nuts. Foldoat mixture into pumpkin mixture to form stiff dough.

3. Press dough into a lightly greased 15 1/2 by 10 1/2-inchjelly roll pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Whilestill warm, cut into 2 by 3 inch bars. Serve warm or cool com-pletely. Makes about 30 bars.

*To toast the coconut, place it on a sheet pan in an even layerand put it in a 350 degree oven. Stir after 3 minutes and continueto stir every 5 minutes until lightly browned on the edges. Takesabout 10 minutes cooking time.

You slide into your vehicle after a long day at work, eager toget home, kick off your shoes and take it easy, when you see it.One of the warning lights on your instrument panel is shiningbright, indicating that all is not well with your vehicle. Ugh!

The instrument panels on most vehicles consist of a variety ofred and yellow lights that let drivers know when there is a prob-lem with their vehicle. Some lights are more cause for concernthan others. Here is a brief description of the warning lights youmight see on your vehicle and what you should do in the eventthey occur.

Service Engine Soon: This light may also be labeled "CheckEngine" and can be triggered by any number of problems from aloose gas cap to a legitimate issue with the engine. As long asyour vehicle drives fine, there is no reason for you to panic. Youshould have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.

Air Bag Readiness: This light indicates there is a problemwith your air bags and you need to have your vehicle serviced assoon as possible. Don't ignore the warning and take a chance onair bag failure in an accident.

Anti-Lock or ABS: This light indicates the anti-lock featureon your brakes has been disabled and you should have your vehi-cle serviced as soon as possible. Your brakes will continue towork, but if you get into a situation where you have to brakehard, the wheels could lock up.

Engine Oil: This light indicates the oil pressure is low andyou need to have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignorethe warning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could risk

1. Position the vehicles so that they don't touch each other. This will prevent a ground connection between the two.

2. Turn off the lights, heater fan and other electrical acces-sories to both vehicles.

3. Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive ter-minal on the battery of the booster vehicle and the other end tothe positive terminal on the dead battery.

4. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negativeterminal on the battery of the booster vehicle and the other end toa vehicle ground, such as the engine-lifting eye.

5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and let it idle.6. Start the engine of the vehicle being jumped.7. Once the engine of the vehicle being jumped starts, discon-

nect the negative jumper cable of the jumped vehicle from itsground connection. Then disconnect the black cable from the neg-ative terminal of the battery of the booster vehicle.

8. Disconnect the red cables from the positive terminals of thebatteries of both vehicles.

You should take warning lights seriously

Jump vehicle the proper way

extensive damage to the engine.Low Engine Coolant: This light indicates the engine coolant

is low and you should address the problem right away. Shut offyour vehicle, wait for the engine to cool and then check thecoolant level. Add some if needed. The light may go off. If itdoesn't, you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possi-ble.

Engine Coolant Temperature: This light indicates the tem-perature of the engine is beyond the safe maximum and youshould have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignore thewarning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could riskextensive damage to the engine.

Battery Voltage: This light indicates the battery is no longerbeing charged and you should address the problem right away. You have about 20 minutes of driving left before your vehicleshuts down completely, so you should turn off all unnecessaryelectrical accessories and have the battery checked. You may justneed a new battery, or you could be experiencing some otherproblem with your electrical system.

Warning lights can come on at any moment when you are driv-ing. Take them seriously, and if you don't know what one means, consult your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's rec-ommendations. BrakesContinued from P.2

Usually you can tell when you neednew brakes. You will hear a grinding orsquealing noise coming from the wheelarea of the vehicle. The louder the noise, the worse the brakes are. If you noticesmoke coming from the wheel area, youshould stop driving and have your brakesreplaced immediately.

There are a number of problems youcan experience with your brakes. Some ofthese include:

•Clunking brakes may indicate that thebolts holding the brakes together areloose. You could also have worn or bro-ken suspension components.

•Spongy or weak brakes may indicatelow or contaminated brake fluid. If thefluid is contaminated, you will have tobleed your brakes and put in new fluid. You could also have worn brake pads.

•Squeaky or whiny brakes may indi-cate worn brake pads. There is a small

metal gasket between the brake pad andthe piston that absorbs vibrations. Whenit becomes worn, squealing occurs. Thegasket must be replaced.

•Brakes grabbing or pulling may indi-cate worn or contaminated brake pads ordiscs.

•A brake pedal that goes down too farbefore you start to slow down may indi-cate low or contaminated brake fluid, worn brake pads or a bad brake powerboost unit. To check the brake booster, you will need a special vacuum measure-ment device.

•Too firm of a brake pedal may indi-cate a problem with the vacuum system. If there is nothing wrong with the system, check your brake booster unit. Somethingmay be blocking your brake fluid line.

•A brake pedal that goes to the floormay indicate no brake pressure due tolow brake fluid or air in the brake fluid. Ifair is the culprit, you will need to bleedyour brakes and replace the fluid.

Go farther on a gallon of gasAs much as we'd like to hope, lower gas

prices aren't likely here to stay. But withprices lower than they have been in awhile-and especially when they really start to riseagain-here are some tips to help you savegas.

Gettin' in tune: Keeping your car inproper running condition is vital to gettinggood gas mileage and saving money, somake sure your engine is tuned up.Especially crucial under the hood are thespark plugs. Are they firing correctly? Onethat isn't can cost you as much as 30% infuel efficiency. All thumbs? You can stillreplace your own air filter and improveyour gas mileage up to 10%. Check the fil-ter periodically for the things that can clogit-dirt, dust, bugs, etc.-and change itaccording to your owner's manual guide-lines.

Pump 'em up: Make sure your tires areinflated to the proper air pressure indicatedin your owner's manual. Underinflated tirescan wreak havoc on three fronts-they robyou of precious gas mileage (up to 15%),they wear out faster than properly inflatedtires and they can cause an accident. Do themath. If you're getting 20 miles to the gal-lon on underinflated tires, you can possiblybump that to 23 with the proper pressure. Ifyour gas tank holds 15 gallons and you getthree extra miles a gallon, that's 45 milesper fillup. If you fill up once a week, that's2,340 additional miles a year you're get-ting. Buy a quality tire gauge and checkyour tire pressure once a month.

Listen for the click: After filling up,

make sure you tighten your cap until itclicks to prevent evaporation of gas andyour money. More than 145 million gallonsof gas evaporate each year from vehicles, according to the Car Care Council.

Made in the shade: Along with tighten-ing your gas cap, park in the shade when-ever possible to reduce evaporative emis-sions. And that big thing attached to-ormaybe detached from-your house? Yeah, your garage. Park in it whenever possibleinstead of on your driveway or the street.Your car will stay cooler lessening the needfor the air conditioner when starting out.

You're not Jeff Gordon: Acceleratesmoothly away from stop signs and stop-lights to get the most out of a tank of gas.

87, 91, 93, hike: Figuring out whatoctane gas to use in your car can seem ascomplicated as a football playbook. As ageneral rule, use the octane recommenda-tion in your owner's manual. Using a high-er octane fuel won't necessarily get youbetter gas mileage, but it will you hit in thewallet or pocketbook. And while you'refilling up, don't worry about topping off.You don't need to get the absolute mostmiles possible before your next pit stop, er,fillup, so trying to top off will likely onlylead to gas spilled on the ground or on thefinish of your car. Once the automatic noz-zle shuts off, stop pumping.

Channel your inner Columbo: Snooparound town and find the lowest gas prices-trenchcoat is optional. You might notice aparticular station or two is always a fewcents lower-or higher-than the rest.
