Dear Friends,

I am very pleased that every time there are more and more countries participating in the WIKF's world championships. As you know WIKF members study the true essence of Wado Ryu from the founder Ohtsuka Sensei. It is my wish that in every championship and especially in this world cup you would demonstrate the real essence of Wado, technically and mentally. Of course naturally in championships everybody wants to win, but especially in WIKF championships it is very important for everyone to embody the essence of Wado. Sumo wrestling is the national sport of Japan and sumo is not just a sport, it's Budo. So, whatever the outcome, winners and losers always respect and bow to each other. This is the soul of the Japanese Budo, which also applies in our Wado Ryu. That is why when you fight you try to use all your power, but whether you win or loose I hope you always behave like real martial artists. After all, we are all a big family, helping each other to build up our WIKF. I am counting on everyone of you to help build the future of our federation. Good luck to everyone! CHAMPIONSHIP DATE 25th, 26th and 27th July 2008. In May 2008, the 43rd Europe EKF Championship will take place in Estonia; in June 2008, the 6th Regions of Europe Championship of EKF in Slovenia. For these reasons we decided that the 5th World Championship of WIKF Wado Ryu, in Portugal, would be held in July 2008, once the 19th World WKF Championship will take place in October / November of that year, in Tokyo, Japan. Given the World WKF Championship, in Japan, it would neither be convenient nor opportune to perform two major tournaments, in such a short period of time. In terms of planning and preparation it would be harmful and would stop many people from going to the World WKF Championship, in Japan, as has happened before for reasons of national teams representations of each country. On the other hand, in July, the athletes are at the top of their sports annual performance. In August most people go away on vacation, severely diminishing the levels of athletic performance, only reinitiating the competitive practice in September. In that same date, the logistic support of the local politicians as well as from the Portuguese National Karate Federation is guaranteed, both in terms of referees and of the necessary material for the competition. Finally, in that period of time, it will be Summer time in Portugal, whereas the climate and weather will invite everyone to come to this great event. Given the great number of athletes expected, and according to the exceptional participation conditions that we intent to offer, we decided the Championship begins on Friday afternoon, by a number of different reasons: 1 – The already high and increasing number of participants by rank/category; 2 – To diminish the competitive stress of athletes, coaches, directors and referees; 3 – Allows the creation of socializing periods, of fun, well being and rest after 5 to 6 pm, in each day of competition; 4 – Help improve the quality of appreciation and pedagogic intervention of athletes and referees, in the competition; 5 – Exact definition of the schedules for the different categories; 6 – The Portuguese media will be present to cover the event. 1. The official Hotel of the organization is Hotel Turismo****. 2. There are at your disposal exceptional conditions for accommodation in the centre of the town of Braga and near the Sports Hall. 3. The hotels referenced from 1 to 6 have inclusive with the accommodation, breakfast and dinner, while the hotels referenced as 7 and 8 only include accommodation and breakfast. 4. The organization will provide lunch – quick meals, in the restaurants/bars of the Sports Hall at low cost that will be paid by each person. A) PRE-REGISTRATION 1. The organization of this big event will take place in a period of time, in which the occupation of the hotels is at its highest, due to the many tourists that arrive in town. 2. D) REGISTRATION/PAYMENT OUT OF DATE All of the reservations and/or registrations made, from the 10th June 2008 onwards will suffer the following penalties:

TRANSPORTS – TRANSFERS A) OPORTO AIRPORT – OFFICIAL HOTELS – OPORTO AIRPORT Transportation of delegation between the Oporto Airport and the official hotels (Braga), and return to Oporto, will be made in a schedule that will be defined briefly, against the payment of 25 € per person.

B) HOTEL – SPORTS HALL 1. Each athlete will go from the hotel and the sports hall and return preferably on foot, because the hotels are only 5 minutes walking distance. Whenever necessary the organization may provide the transportation between these locations. 2. Transfers between the long distance hotels and the competition venue will be free of charge on competition days and the shuttle service will be made in a specific schedule to be determined by the organization of the event.

The Party will be held in the Hotel Turismo, in Braga (HQ-Hotel), on Sunday, between 20:30 and 24:00, a fabulous place that will offer great opportunities to share experiences between karate people. The price will be defined briefly. 2. Each country or delegation should have dinner in the predefined locations, moving afterwards to the party location, Hotel Turismo (HQ). 3. The 80th birthday of Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki will be celebrated in the presence of the world Karate Wado-Ryu family, showing why they nurture for him a very special affection and appreciation. 4. There will be countless and memorable surprises in the birthday commemorations of great Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki. RULES 1. √ - Yes X - No 2. In Individual Kumite, each country can enrol a total of 4 competitors per category/weight/height. This tournament will be run according to the WKF rules of

competition Kumite. This event is only opened for WIKF members: a) The application of rules will be the responsibility of Portuguese referees with

international qualifications of EKF – European Karate Federation; b) We will have the participation of the best Portuguese referees and judges with

national qualifications (FNKP) in Kumite; c) Each country or delegation can enrol his own referees and judges, as long as

they are properly certified by their respective national federations or EKF-WKF. 3. In Team Kumite, each country can enrol a total of 4 teams per country in different categories. This event is only opened at WIKF members:

a) In the infantile (12-13), Juvenile (14-15) and Cadet (16-17) categories the teams should be constituted by 3 main competitors + 2 alternate competitors. However, it’s possible to participate in the competition with only 2 main competitors;

b) In Junior/Senior categories (18-34) the team must be composed by 5 main competitors + 2 alternate competitors, however, it’s possible to participate in the competition with only 3 main competitors;

c) The veteran competitors may integrate the Junior/Senior (18-34) kumite team. 4. The competitors are only allowed to participate in their own age category, except, as designated above in 3.C. 5. In Individual Kata, each country can enrol a total of 4 competitors per category. The official rules of WIKF will be used with a numeric score card. This event is only opened at WIKF members:

a) His application and orientation will be the responsibility of Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki; b) In the 1st round, the competitor must perform the obligatory kata defined in the

list for the category; c) In 2nd round the competitor must perform a free kata, compulsory different from

the kata performed in the 1st round; d) If there is a 3rd round, the Benjamin, Infantile, Initiate, Juvenile and Cadet

competitors can repeat the kata performed in the 1st or 2nd round, or present a new kata. Junior/Senior and veteran competitors, in case there is a 3rd round, must compulsory present a different (new) kata from the performed in 1st and 2nd round;

e) In case of a tie, in any category, the kata to untie must be compulsory different of the kata performed in the previous round.

6. In Tanto-Dori competition, each country can enrol a total of 4 teams per country. This event is only opened at WIKF members, according to the following, presented by the Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki:

a) This is only for Junior/Seniors and Veterans (starting at 18 years of age); b) The team is composed by two members either male or female; c) The first member of the team must perform two attack techniques: one from

number 1 to 5 and one from number 6 to 10; d) After the second attack the defender must retrieve the knife and then change the

attack. He must also perform two techniques: one from number 1 to 5 and one from number 6 to 10;

e) After the second attack of member number two, member one must retrieve the knife, ending the performance;

f) There will be two teams: team AKA and team AO. Team AKA starts; g) The flag system will be used.

7. Each coach must be properly registered in the WIKF and follow the next procedures:

a) It is only allowed for 1 coach to be next to the tatami by category, fully dressed with sports garment of its country;

b) Each coach must wear, at all times, the official identification accreditation, if odder to remain next to the box of action;

c) Only 5 coaches per country are allowed in Kumite and Kata; d) It is only allowed the presence of 2 coaches per country or delegation, in the

general coach reunion. 8. All the competitors are obliged to present, in the act of the delegation registration, the identity card and the passport of the WIKF. The non presentation of these documents will mean the elimination of the event. 9. All the competitors of individual Kumite are obliged to present themselves to weight and height control in the category that they are registered in. There will be no tolerance in the control of weight and height. 10. It is not permitted the change of category due to the excess or reduction of weight and/or difference of height (in the infantile and juvenile category), during the control period. 11. The change of weight or stature in any category is possible, free of charge, when properly justified in a requirement elaborated by the head representative of the country or delegation and handed to the organization, in the period between the 25th May and the 19th July 2008, at nobody’s default. 12. The organization committee of the event has the responsibility of solving any problems that may eventually occur during the event.

13. As previously defined in the world meeting in Dallas 2005, the open classes event where all styles were allowed to compete has been cancelled.

PROTECTIONS The obligatory protections for each discipline will be defined as in the official competition rules of WKF (Article 2 point 8). Gloves, leg and foot protection must be of red or blue colour. Mouth guards, chest guards (female) and groin guards (male). Anyone not complying with this regulation may incur in declassification.

I, ____________________________________________ the undersigned, as the Chief of Delegation of my country, duly enrolled to participate in the 5th World Karate Championships, which will be held in Braga, Portugal, from the 25th to the 27th of June 2008, with fully knowledge of the Statutes, the Rules and the Norms of The WADO INTERNATIONAL KARATE-DO FEDERATION, pledge myself to faithfully accomplish the regulations of this before mentioned entity, and I take any and all administrative, civil and criminal responsibilities of whatever happens to our athletes, coaches and other members of our delegation participating in this championship, before, during and after the competition, such as physical injuries, personal expenses, or monetary debts and casual material damages to the hotels, the venue, means of transportation etc. Furthermore, I exempt from any legal, civil or criminal responsibilities the organizers of the Championships, the WIKF and the Portugal Association Karate Organization, its directors, as well as any person, company, or entity related to the event (sponsors, public and private entities). I authorize the organizers of the event to use images, photos and the names of our competitors and other members of our delegation (since it is considered necessary) for the sport activities and publications of karate, related to the event, without any monetary compensation.
